Microsoft Pro Photo Tools 2.0
2008-12-25 10:00:00 I?ve been in the digital photography world for many years. As a consumer, a massive consumer I would say (), and then little by little I became what they call a prosumer. I changed around 15 cameras over 8 years and but I?ve been a picture-taker for ages. And now, thanks to my job, I have the opportunity to take events and places pictures wherever I go. Now I can say I continue to change cameras every once in a while (who knows me knows it very well ) but this time I got what I was looking for: the Canon Powershot G10. I was also interested in the new Panasonic LX3 but then I opted for the Canon for several reasons that I won?t mention here (maybe in another post). What I wanted to highlight is that I discovered the RAW mode (?yeah, right, you made a big discovery!? ) Thanks to my pal Gerard (and also thanks to Davide & Andrea who helped me drilling down into many other camera features when we were in Barcelona) I installed the free Microsoft Professional Photo Tools 2. Brain imaging links chronic insomnia to reversible cognitive deficits witho
2008-09-01 18:51:00 A neuroimaging study in the Sept. 1 issue of the journal Sleep is the first to find that cognitive processes related to verbal fluency are compromised in people with insomnia despite the absence of a behavioral deficit. These specific brain function alterations can be reversed, however, through non-pharmacological treatment with sleep therapy. Results of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning during verbal fluency tasks show that people with insomnia have less activation than controls in the left medial prefrontal cortex and the left interior frontal gyrus, two fluency-specific brain regions. However, participants with insomnia generated more words than controls on both the category fluency task (46.4 words compared with 38.7 words) and the letter fluency task (40.1 words compared with 32.7 words). ?It was surprising to see that the patients performed at a higher level than the control group, but showed reduced brain activation in their fMRI results,? said princip...
diffusion spectrum imaging
2008-08-27 00:58:00 At the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston researchers are using an MRI technique called diffusion spectrum imaging to create three dimensional models of the brains of animals and humans.MIT Technology Review describes this promising imaging modality:It uses magnetic resonance signals to track the movement of water molecules in the brain: water diffuses along the length of neural wires, called axons. Scientists can use these diffusion measurements to map the wires, creating a detailed blueprint of the brain's connectivity. On the medical side, radiologists are beginning to use the technology to map the brain prior to surgery, for example, to avoid important fiber tracts when removing a brain tumor. Wedeen and others are now using diffusion imaging to better understand the structures that underlie our ability to see, to speak, and to remember. Scientists also hope that the techniques will grant new insight into diseases linked to abnormal wiring, such as schizophrenia and autism
