"Immoral Hazard"
2008-05-30 14:15:00 by Stephen Lendman So says Jeremy Grantham, co-founder of Boston-based investment firm Grantham, Mayo and Van Otterloo, now known as GMO. Some call him the philosopher king of Wall Street because of his highly insightful views on markets and the economy, usually with a longer-term perspective. In a profession of touts, fast-buck and scam artists, Grantham's commentaries are notably refreshing. They're detailed, scholarly, sober, clear and especially important at a time of unparalleled excesses, great economic uncertainty, voices ranging from gloom and doom to blue skies and all clear ahead, so who knows what to believe. Few people sort things out better than he, and whether right or wrong, he makes consummate sense and should be taken seriously. He calls his latest commentary "Immoral Hazard" and takes straight aim at the perpetrators. It's not the first time, and with good reason. Bad policy yields bad results with former Fed Chairman Greenspan Exhibit A. Grantham...

2008-04-12 08:30:00 I thought this HP poll result was pretty flipping cool.I bet if you asked the general population that same question just 2% would say yes. To understand the evil of Wal-Mart, and shopping at Wal-Mart, is definitely not mainstream. "Low prices! Low prices! It's all good!" Now that's mainstream.Nice job 49%. Give it a few more years for Americans to see the results of their behavior, and I think that 49% will be looking pretty prescient. Like HP'ers in general. Is shopping at Wal-Mart immoral and un-patriotic?Yes 490 (49%)No 500 (50%)

Nanotech Immoral, Says U.S. Majority
2008-03-19 14:11:00 You think there's no reason to worry about the hue and cry over the risks of nanotechnology? Think again. A recent survey of 1000 Americans revealed that more than 70% considered nanotechnology "immoral." The results seemed to be influenced in part by religious belief, with respondents lumping nanot

Bottled Water Now Immoral
2008-02-18 16:43:00 Drinking bottled water should be made as unfashionable as smoking, according to a government adviser. “We have to make people think that it’s unfashionable just as we have with smoking. We need a similar campaign to convince people that this is wrong,” said Tim Lang, the Government’s naural resources commissioner. Phil Woolas, the environment minister, added that ...

War Money for Children?s Health Fund? Now That?s Immoral
2007-11-12 15:23:00 Is it immoral for the government to not fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program while it is funding the War in Iraq? This guy thinks so: To summarize, Congress passed drastic expansions to S-CHIP (state-sponsored children’s health insurance), enrollment eligibility covering children with higher family incomes. Supporters of the bill suggest as many as 9 ...
China?s immoral energy policy: Part I
2007-11-02 04:55:00 Yes, America’s climate policy is immoral. But that doesn’t make China’s rapacious coal-plant building moral. The N.Y. Times has published the sobering numbers, which bear repeating: The country built 114,000 megawatts of fossil-fuel-based generating capacity last year alone, almost all coal-fired, and is on course to complete 95,000 megawatts more this year. For comparison, Britain ...

Drugs prohibition is 'unworkable and immoral' says Chief Constable
2007-10-17 01:02:00 The Chief Constable of North Wales Police Richard Brunstrom, recommends in a report published today, that his Police Authority officially support his call for the legalisation and regulation of drugs, as part of their submission to the drug strategy consultation being conducted by the [UK] Government. He also recommends that they affiliate to Transform Drug Policy Foundation [Founder, top cop Eddie Ellison who visted NZ see LEAP TOUR] The Authority meets on Monday 15 October to discuss the recommendations. Danny Kushlick, Transform Director said:"We are absolutely delighted at Mr Brunstrom's paper. The Chief Constable has displayed great leadership and imagination in very publicly calling for a drug policy that replaces the evident failings of prohibition with a legal system of regulation and control for potentially dangerous drugs". "Mr Brunstrom's call is less surprising when you consider that prohibition, and the illegal markets it creates, is the single largest cause of crime ...
Legalise all drugs: chief constable demands end to 'immoral laws'
2007-10-15 10:08:00 One of Britain's most senior police officers is to call for all drugs to be legalised and urges to declare an end to the "failed" war on dru At some point in time all laws have to meet with reality. All laws that are not objective will clearly show negative consequences. With the war on drugs which is fought now nearly a century we see negative consequences all over the place, e.h. terrorists and criminal gangs are financed by drugs.

Vanessa Hudgens: Immoral Homewrecker
2007-09-08 23:21:00 ROFLMAO!Oh wow. Okay, I wasn't going to report on this because it's really a non-news item, but I came across the doozy of all comments that you literally have got to read! This young actress, one Vanessa Hudgens, who appears in Disney's highest-rated cable movie ever, High School Musical (and the sequel), apparently took some nakies of herself in a mirror with a cellphone and some jerky douchebag posted them all over the internet. Now, Miss Hudgens is 18-years old and has every right to expose herself to whomever she chooses, but it is undeniable that her role in these family-friendly movies has made her something of a "tween" role model, so many goodwives and burghers are wringing their hands and crying, "Witch!"Now I was going to let this all go because - well, who effing cares? But then, while reading about this on E!, I came across this comment:I came home from work yesterday afternoon to find my 14 year old son pleasuring himself to these pictures of Ms. Hudgens while looki...

Saeed Ghanbari receives 80 lashes for abusing alcohol and having sex outside marriage Some took pictures on mobile telephones, others climbed traffic lights for a better vantage point as Ghanbari was marched to the centre of the square under the watch of blue-uniformed guards carrying machine guns. A four foot long metal bench was taken from a police van and the convicted man was made to lie on it on his stomach, his fawn checked shirt pulled-up to his shoulders to expose his back and waist. The Welfare of Iraqi Civilians and the Immoral Position of Liberals
2007-07-17 16:43:00 I’m wondering if there are any American liberals who actually care about the well-being of the Iraqi civilian population? It's Immoral To Let A Sucker Keep His Money
2007-07-12 16:10:00 With the 2007 World Series of Poker upon us, thousands of people have headed to Vegas. Their goal? To try and claim the coveted bracelet given to the winnners, not to mention the $8.7 million that goes along with it. The WSOP didn't have much of a mainstream audience until ESPN started showing it. All of a sudden, poker exploded onto the scene, and anybody with an internet connection could learn how to play. Still, poker has always been part of American culture, romanticized in film as a game played by outlaws. It was often used as a metaphor of good vs. evil, with the good coming away victorious, even if it meant cheating. With that in mind, a look at the best of poker in the cinema. Please remember there are many, many films which could be included that I left out in the interest of time. But feel free to add your own in the comments section. RoundersOne of the films that really helped to jump-start Texas Hold 'Em as a game people wanted to play. The film is entirely about poke...

Knockoff Goods, Replica Purses? Legal or Immoral?
2007-05-06 00:00:00 I was just about to send out a task to the guy that writes articles for me today when at the last moment I thought I would check out the web site requested.Basically the job description said something along the lines of : Ashleysboutique.com sells inspired by handbags of Louis Vuitton, Coach, Prada, Gucci, etc. Our target market is USA fashion conscious women. Fair do's said I. Should be simple for them to complete. But then visiting the web site I notice that they sell Replica Purses, Knockoff Handbags, Knockoff Wrist Bands and much much more. I didn't realize that inspired in the job description actually mean 'knockoff' or 'replica'. Now 'knocked off' in the UK means stolen, but these goods don't appear to be stolen. Now admittedly, they do not hide this fact. And since the site is based is hosted in Canada, perhaps these are legal copies of the originals and what the site is doing is legal too. When you compare the prices of the goods at Ashleysbo...
Immorality doesn’t pay
2007-05-02 18:25:00 Since its earliest days, America has supported ugly regimes for a variety of reasons: reputable European realpolitik, the dictators’ openness to foreign investment, and simply because other options were still worse. Idealism had slowly poisoned American foreign politics. United States has entered the world wars against Germany for no reason of national significance, but to establish America, a newcomer to world politics, as global hegemon. The might bred pride. Danger and costs restricted idealism and pride initially, but things changes after the WWII propelled United States into the superpower status. America could bring light and build ambitions safely and at relatively moderate cost. Thus came the dubious wars in Korea and Vietnam, and non-feasible but image-building protection of Western Europe against Russia. America behaved like an ambitious, unchecked giant. Each stratum got a piece of pie: idealists defended the free world against communism, while imperialists extended Ame...

Moral Idealogy VS Immoral CEO
2007-04-16 18:00:00 I'm going to put it out there, I love the U.S.A. Not to sound like an arrogant American, but we are the greatest country in the world. Best people, best places, best food, and the best everything! With global competitors such as China and numerous other Asian countries taking manufacturing jobs, it would make sense for me to take the time and try to support American companies. Unfortunately, it is difficult and time consuming to find companies who make their products in the U.S. American Apparel, an L.A. based company is committed to making their products, sweat shop free in America. I am willing to throw a few extra bucks down for products made in America, but one thing really turns me off, their graphic pictures and controversial lawsuits. If you have shopped at American Apparel in their stores or visited their website, you know exactly what I am talking about. Their pictures/advertisements are graphic and, according to Wikipedia, that of amateur photography. In addition,...

Generally Immoral -- Top to Bottom Hypocrisy of Pace
2007-03-13 18:35:00 General Peter Pace has a lot of nerve! If ever there was a more orchestrated delivery of fag bashing for political gain, I don't know what it is? Oh wait...That's right, the GOP uses this approach to "turn out the vote." Silly me. I do remember! It was the President of the United States of America that politically vilified the gay citizens of this nation for political gain!Well, General Pace is welcome to his opinion, and so am I!My rock solid, 100% committed, monogamous relationship of 15 years is anything by immoral! I take great issue with the General's personal opinion, and it's relevance on the floor of the House. And I venture to believe that the feelings of this nation as it relates to committed loving relationships of this type, or any other, is that they are morally based, not immorally tainted. But you will only get this majority read on it if you strip the political rhetoric and the fear mongering from the discussion. The GOP is a tawdry sex machine! Sex all t...

Immoral parents
2007-02-26 22:13:00 Today when I picked up my son (by bicycle) at the after school centre I saw some appalling things. On the school grounds just opposite of the after school centre, there is a sports hall where kids do sports in the evening. One of the entrances to the school yard is located near the sports hall. Several cars had passed the entrance with there cars and parked just outside of the sports hall. The lazy parents wouldn't even bother to park their cars in the designated parking area some 50 meters away. Then I saw something even worse. A father was sitting in his car at the other entrance of the school yard, about 250 meters from the sports hall, waiting for his son to come. Of course the engine was idling and his son was probably still in the locker room. These kind of things really piss me off nowadays. Parents should be role models for their kids, not shameless misfits. Why do so few parents display in their actions that they are concerned about the future of their children? Why do so...

Atheism leads to immorality? Bunk!
2007-01-01 16:15:01 Us atheists have had to put up with a lot of manure being pedalled as informed ethics in order to smear us with the crimes of Pol Pot, Stalin and Hitler. We got it from hardcore apologists, we get it from culture warriors, most of all though, we get it from fakes. Bigoted phobics who want to maintain the "moral instruction" of their flock through fraudulent pretence to moral authority. They say that their morality comes from God, which in turn through their scholarship of their religions texts, naturally puts them in a position of power relative to their flock. The idea that the Godless can discern morality threatens these snake-oil moralists, these theological demagogues who never adapted to the Enlightenment.Take the hypothetical story of Bruce babysitting little Timmy...Bruce was born Godless into a non-God-fearing family who never went to church nor had a Bible in their house. His parent's parents weren't church goers either and Bruce's Grandparents kept their religious views ... |
