Man is immortal until his work is done. - AugustineIn this modern world of ours many people seem to think that science has somehow made such religious ideas as immortality untimely or old fashioned.I think science has a real surprise for the skeptics. Science, for instance, tells us that nothing in nature, not even the tiniest particle, can disappear without a trace. Nature does not know extinction. All it knows is transformation. If God applies this fundamental principle to the most minute and insignificant parts of His universe, doesn t it make sense to assume that He applies it to the masterpiece of His creation, the human soul? Dr.WERNER VON BRAUNWithout the hope of immortality no one would ever face death for his country. --Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) _Tusculanae Disputationes_Millions long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Susan Ertz[Jesus] does not waste a word in talking about immortality, as to whether it actually...
Alton Jones welcome to Bass Fishing Immortality
2008-02-26 00:00:00
Winning the Bassmasters Classic is equal to instant Bass Fishing Immortality.  I take my hat off to Alton for getting it down, because he had the guts to stick to his plan even when bites were slow to grind out a fairly decisive victory.  Many other anglers may have chose to move or try a different pattern when it was slow, but he stuck to his Booyah Football Jig.  So his great decision making, was actually deciding not to change!!! I will likely do a more comprehensive Classic summary when I have a bit more time, but I wanted to get my congrats out to Alton in a timely manner Here are some good links:AltonJones.comALTON JONES's Boat Design RichRichLindgren.com Rich'-s Bassin' Forum Bass Fishing Tackle Blog
Life’s a Peach, Love is Immortality
2008-01-27 16:15:00
When I was little, my mum had a penchant for Chinese antiquities. Along with a glossy rosewood coffee table, my favourite was a painted statue of Shou Lao, the god of longevity. He held a long twisted staff of many twining branches in one hand, and a peach (of unlikely proportions) in the other. Although he looked at least 200 years old, he smiled as if mid-chuckle, and his cheeks had a crimson glow like the peach. We were told that the peach came from a tree that bore fruit every 3 millennia, and anyone who took a bite from it could live as long as they wanted. Researchers say that by 2060 people living in the country with the highest life expectancy will live to an average age of 100. The average lifespan globally is double that of 200 years ago. But, say researchers Jim Oeppen and Dr James Vaupel “This is far from eternity: modest annual increments in life expectancy will never lead to immortality.” (Source: BBC) Physical immortality is yet further off in some countries. Ther...

Dr. Valter Longo Vs Death: Biogerontology ups the ante for Immortality
2008-01-23 03:33:00
The Tree of Life, the Philosopher’s Stone, the Holy Grail; throughout human history the myth and legend of immortality and extended life has been a common cross cultural theme. Yet one that has always stayed obscured mysterious and decidedly out of reach, that is until now and the advent of genetic Biogerontology. At the University of Southern California, Dr Valter Longo not only looks Death
Lines from Wordsworth's Immortality Ode
2008-01-14 17:13:00
"The Clouds that gather round the setting sunDo take a sober colouring from an eyeThat hath kept watch o'er man's mortality;Another race hath been, and other palms are won. Thanks to the human heart by which we live,Thanks to its tenderness, its joys, and fears,To me the meanest flower that blows can giveThoughts that do often lie too deep for tears."(extract taken from ‘Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood )I consider these lines penned by Wordsworth as one of the most precious literary jewels. How beautifully he has summed up the whole thing! It seems as if he has described a lifetime, and at the same time the whole generation of mankind – he refers to the Sun as “that hath kept watch o'er man's mortality”.
Ode: Intimations of Immortality by William Wordsworth
2008-01-13 14:11:00
AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ELEMENTS IN THE IMMORTALITY ODEApart from its philosophical aspect, the great Ode on the Intimation of Immortality is also in the nature of a personal document. It was written on the eve of his happy marriage with Mary Hutchison, when he was still at the height of his powers. But the poet felt that a great change had come over his relations with nature. The familiar objects of the external world were still there as usual. He could still find joy in nature, but could no longer perceive her appareled in celestial light as before. The poet was terribly shaken by the loss of ‘vision’ and asks the poignant question:Whither is fled the visionary gleam?Where is now, the glory and the dream. The poem, in short, faithfully records a grave spiritual crisis and how it was overcome. The poet gradually realized that though he had lost one gift, “the divine vision”, other gifts had followed, which were sufficient compensation for the single loss. There was no cause for gri...

Quest for immortality
2007-10-16 18:26:00
Neuroscientist Anders Sandberg, biomedical gerontologist Aubrey de Grey and philosopher Nick Bostrom talk about the quest for immortality using transhumanism. They discuss the questions "Why should we live forever?", "How can we achieve immortality?", "What techniques will be used?", "How will these techniques evolve?", "If everyone is living longer, how will we deal with overpopulation?", "When will these techniques be possible?". "Sandberg and his fellow transhumanists plan to bypass death by using technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), genetic engineering and nanotechnology to radically accelerate human evolution, eventually merging people with machines to make us immortal. This may not be possible yet, the transhumanists reason, but as long as they live long enough - a few decades perhaps - the technology will surely catch up." - NewScientist.com Read the whole article at NewScientist.com. The immortality of your persona in the Internet

B. Bonds’ Rendezvous With Immortality
2007-08-08 08:12:00
With one mighty swing of the bat, Barry Bonds last night broke the most hallowed record in the 131-year history of major-league baseball by hitting his 756th career home run. Mark Spitz’s seven Olympic gold medals, Lance Armstrong’s seven Tour de France victories and Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game all were extraordinary, but don’t compare. Just as Hank Aaron was both adored and reviled when he broke Babe Ruth’s 39-year old record of 714 home runs in 1974, so is Bonds. Bonds, like Aaron, is black, and some of the enmity for both stars was and is racially driven. But unlike Aaron, a clean living hard hitter, Bonds has been dogged by allegations that his run for the record books has been helped by performance-enhancing drugs. It hasn’t helped that Bonds, who has played for the San Francisco Giants for the last 14 seasons, has long had a problematic relationship with fans and sportswriters alike. But that now seems rather beside the point and this lifelong ba...
Ichiro: Inching towards Immortality and possibly 4,000 hits??

A model of consistency at a very high level, Ichiro has posted over 200 hits

Immortality
2007-07-15 22:38:00
I recently picked a new primary care physician. After two visits andexhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing "fairly well" for my age. Alittle concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, "Doyou think I'll live to be 80?"He asked, "Well, do you smoke tobacco or drink beer/wine?""Oh no," I replied. "I've never done either."Then he asked, "Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?"I said "No, I've heard that all red meat is very unhealthy!""Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, ballooning, or rock climbing ?""No, I don't," I said.He said, "Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or sexually fool around?""No," I said. "I've never done any of those things."He looked at me and said, "Then why do you give a shit if you live to be80?"

I Forgot the Password For Immortality
2007-06-13 01:53:00
As the good readers of this blog may or may not know, I was in possession of the immortality password. I received it at an Ingrid Bergman auction, at which I obtained a small flask containing the precious code. However, as of 2 minutes ago -the time at which I was going to write this post- I forgot that which made me better than anyone else. If I don't remember it before 2 p.m. tomorrow, God will revoke my immortal license, and I'll have to sit on the bus with Issac Newton on the way to softball practice.WAIT A MINUTE!!! I wrote it down on a small piece of stationary and hid it behind a toilet in the Bill Clinton Presidential Library. I'll use my powers of persuasion -mixed with a bit of telepathy- to convince the head librarian to find and fax it to me posthaste.wait for it....wait for it...BONZAII!!!Now, all I have to do is reach for the paper and see....the drunken scribblings of what appears to be the words to the theme from Good Times. Although, I can still make out some o...

The Key to Immortality? ?Live Longer Gene? Found
2007-05-03 02:58:00
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists have known for seven decades that mice, dogs, fruit flies and other animals given diets bordering on starvation tended to live up to 40 percent longer than their better-fed cousins. Now they think they know why. They identified a gene in roundworms on Wednesday that directly links calorie restriction to longer lifespan.
