TunesDay: Ooh la la
2008-04-29 18:17:00 One of my favorite musical sub-genres is sort of an off-shoot of trip-hop, a sultry urban electropop district where the downbeat influence of Portishead meets up with all kinds of interesting characters dressed like David Bowie in the ’70s. California pure pop a la Burt Bacharach, for instance, which we find in the likes of Saint Etienne (and the solo work of singer Sarah Cracknell), Mono and Hooverphonic. These groups are almost always fronted by female vocalists, and every year or two I trip across another one that just blows me away. In 2002 it was Frou Frou, and in 2005 the duo’s singer, Imogen Heap, knocked us out with the brilliant Speak for Yourself. Black Box Recorder did two or three must-have CDs and singer Sarah Nixey’s solo debut last year was one of my Gold LP winners. Hooverphonic has a great new release out this year that will likely be in the Gold LP category, as well. Then there’s our band of the week, Goldfrapp, a British outfit fronted by s...
Jeff Goldblum & Imogen Heap: New Couple!
2008-04-20 15:00:00 And how appropriate for one another are they? Imogen Heap is a total weirdo, as well as being popular amongst the electro music inclined. And Jeff Goldblum is… well, you’ve seen The Fly. Anyway, he’s usually portrayed as being either intense and quirky, in that awkwardly sexy way. They make a cute couple, certainly. From ...

Live Covers: Dustin Kensrue does Imogen Heap
2008-01-08 00:09:00 We're back! We promised that we'd return with our favorite live cover that we discovered in '07, and here it is. It's from Dustin Kensrue (Thrice)'s solo tour in '06, where he performed Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" several times. There's a ton of videos of various performances of the cover floating around, and this is the best we could find. I never could get into Thrice, but I really do respect Dustin as a musician and think he's an amazing live performer solo, especially acoustic. His voice really adds a lot to the song and makes it work in a whole new way. He adds just a little acoustic guitar to make the song even more his own, but he doesn't let the guitar dominate the performance, so it's just as subtle and affecting as the acapella original.

Imogen Heap To Perform 'Glittering Clouds' Live!
2007-10-24 19:27:00 Imogen is set to perform 'Glittering Clouds' at a very special 'Plague Songs' concert at London's Barbican Hall on October 28th.Immi will only be performing one song, other performers include Rufus Wainwright, King Creosote, Patrick Wolf, The Handsome Family and others. Tickets are currently on sale here. Here's what Immi had to say: "I'll be performing with various musicians who'll be playing all the songs from the album that night, so it won't be exactly as it is on the album. I hear there's a choir so I may get them to make funny bug sounds! Not quite sure how it's going to turn out...but it should be fun! I know Leo Abrahams will be there looping guitars and David Coulter also. I hear there's a glass harmonium player at hand too. Should be interesting!"*§ource: Imogen Heap's website*
Song of the Week: Loose Ends by Imogen Heap
2007-10-14 05:04:00 The photo in this entry is Running After. Photographed and edited by me, Lynda Walldez. I recently discovered this song. Ever since, I have been playing it a lot. I love the vocals, beat, and cheery sound despite what she sings about. Imogen Heap is my absolute favorite singer. I first began admiring her when I heard her in Frou Frou. Since then she has soared in her career, creating awesome tracks such as this one. Loose ends is an eclectic track with thought provoking lyrics and a voice that will keep you in awe. I can't get enough of this song and it might even make you want to dance in your seat. Why not take a listen? Here it is, Loose Ends by Imogen Heap: I encourage comments on my writings. Imogen Heap - I Megaphone
2006-12-24 16:57:01 The opening track on ‘I Megaphone’, “Getting Scared,” is a ferocious and powerful tale of revenge set against a spare musical background which surges periodically with unexpected screams of guitar and percussion. It’s the perfect introduction to British singer Imogen Heap, whose voice is remarkable in its versatility, leaping with grace from whispery to rough-edged [...]
Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself
2006-12-17 16:49:04 Although it took Imogen Heap seven years to follow up her solo debut with 2005’s ‘Speak For Yourself’, the British vocalist was far from idle during the interim, having formed Frou Frou with producer Guy Sigsworth (Bjork, Seal). While her second album mines a vein similar to Frou Frou’s electronica/pop hybrid, it also carries a [...] |
