Travelocity Buys Travelguru – Implications For Indian OTA Space?
2009-08-18 14:55:00 In what seems to be a first of its kind deal (in terms of size – though the actual acquisition price isnt disclosed) in the Indian online travel space Travelocity – the global travel giant has acquired India’s Travelguru.com which is focused on hotel bookings in India and Internationally. Travelocity boasts of annual gross bookings of more than U.S. $10 billion and operates: Travelocity Business® for corporate travel; igougo.com, a leading online travel community; lastminute.com, a leader in European online travel; and ZUJI, a leader in Asia-Pacific online travel. Travelguru which has been well covered by WATBlog had itself acquired a lesser known desiya.com in its early days in the Indian market. Travelguru is also no newbie to acquisition rumors and previously it was rumored to have been acquired by Expedia another online travel giant but I guess travelocity is where it was headed. The acquisition will build upon the existing Travelocity India team and will a...

Application Implications: Question of the Day: 49
2009-03-04 13:24:00 Do they mean all the time? Our health club's entrance has a counter area where, on entering, you scan your membership card and move in. The counter has two sides to walk on, with the scanner only on one side. There's a sign on the door that says Exit To The Right. Exiting to the right means walking out of my way around the far side of the counter.I say that sign only applies when there are people entering -- because it would keep me from bumping into them or having to squeeze past them. Sweetie says it applies all the time, even at 10 p.m. when there's nobody around.I think that some signs imply that they only apply at certain times. Like the stoplight near our house that used to have "No right turn on red between 3-6," which I said meant only during rush hour, and not on Sunday afternoons. I won that battle -- they eventually took the sign down. Are you Afraid of Public Speaking?
Security Implications of Microsoft Tags
2009-01-10 22:02:00 So, as I said yesterday, I'm a big fan of Microsoft Tags. There have been many times when I've been out and about and I've seen an ad or poster that I've wanted more details on, snapping a picture of a small barcode is much easier than jotting down the details. However, as I played ...

A Technological Singularity: What are the Implications for Free Software?

Some clever clogs suggested that it might be a spiffing wheeze to write something about the possible implications of the much mooted singularity (is that a proper noun, with a capital S?) and what it might mean for the future of both free and proprietary software. VARIOUS IMPLICATIONS OF CREATIONISM
2008-06-07 09:49:00 VARIOUS IMPLICATIONS OF CREATIONISMBelow are several recent posts on this subject which I made to email discussion groups.THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CREATION WEEK AS ARCHETYPAL PARADIGM In several recent posts I stated that Creation Week must be regarded as an archetypal paradigm, i.e. that God?s work of creation is a model which man is expected to follow in his work. The Fourth Commandment clearly states that the reason why man is supposed to work for six days and then rest on the seventh is because this is what God did during Creation Week. Now there is a great significance in this which is not usually noted when this is discussed. The Hebrew verb for work or labor (abad) which is used in the Fourth Commandment (Ex 20:6) literally means ?to serve?. Work or labor is to be regarded as service -- we are supposed to serve one another and, in so doing, thereby also serve God. It is very significant that Moses was instructed to tell Pharoah -- ?Let My people go that they may serve Me? (the ...

The implications of McClellan
2008-05-31 15:06:00 Looking around over the rim of my coffee mug this morning and noted Martin; McPhillips chatting about the McClellen thing again. Yes, I noticed the business with toward the end of his tenure at the White House as well, Martin. To be honest, I was always a little skeptical of the man, but always figured that he was doing a reasonably good job representing his boss, who, you understand, I also had some skepticism about. He was representing a centrist in W, after all, so how much can you expect of the man? Your point about how well he handled David Gregory is well taken, but Gregory is so obviously a pusillanimous puss anyway that making him look like one was no great shakes, given that all one had to really do was turn the camera on him and let him do his thing. MSNBC proves that just about every night these days. And of course, McClellan really had no understanding of the greater vision involved… you’re quite correct. Then again, that’s one of the problems with...

Does Morris have implications for Nady
2008-04-28 04:00:00 I know there are many Mets fans that have dreamed of the return of Xavior Nady. The right handed corner outfielder and part-time 1B seems to be a perfect fit for what the Mets are missing. Nady could even out the the line-up, between 1B and the corner outfield he could find plenty of playing time. But what would motivate the Pirates to trade one of their most productive players, many people when they discuss trades treat the small market teams like they are AAA organizations, their for the large market teams to replenish their rosters. But small market teams make moves for a purpose; 1) salary dump 2) a hot commodity player who will produce a nice return in players 3) prior to free agency to get the most for a player who they can't re-sign.Nady doesn't have a large contract and he' still two years from free agency, so the only motivation to solely move Nady will be his value. However, that puts the Pirates in the drivers seat as they can sit back at the trade deadline and watch t...

New Tools - and Their Implications
2008-04-22 04:12:00 On this blog we’ve talked about the imprecision of natural language and the problems it can present in drafting requirements. Forget requirements - what would you think of a tool that could turn natural language into software code? Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Well, there is already such a tool in the works, although it’ll probably still be a while before they’ve ironed out all the wrinkles. Writing software has been relatively difficult since people began programming computers in the mid-1900s. Although programming a computer is eminently useful — it gives you fine control of a powerful tool — it requires learning a programming language. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are aiming to remove this requirement. They have taken a step toward that goal with a language-to-code visualizer dubbed Metafor. The visualizer uses natural language instructions to sketch the outlines of a program. It can be used as a programming learning ...
Realize the implications of your core beliefs
2008-04-20 10:58:00 Each of us lives a life based on what we focus on. This goes further than simply relating experiences back to a passing thought. It can actually be traced back to core beliefs. How well do you know yours? Are you aware your telepathic thoughts have implications? You reinforce your reality both consciously and unconsciously. You may find it easier to intuit core beliefs in other people. Yet, as you begin to link behavior back to thoughts in others, you will gradually become less blind to your beliefs. You will also begin to discern "positive" and "negative" only gain meaning when you get convinced you're dissatisfied. To become more aware of why you reinforce this negativity helps- shatter your illusions.Let's say you feel as though you have recently faced an unusual number of unforeseen challenges. How you react to each influences what comes next. So, if y...
On-Line Tax Implications for Business

What better a time to consider some Canadian on-line tax tips: All income should be recorded and reported even Second Life income - if you sell property or make money on any of the virtual worlds remember to record it To speed up processing, use Netfile and or Corporations Canada online to file your taxes online. All expenses incurred to promote and grow your company on-line should be included in your returns. If your business is solely an online entity, be aware that tax rates are the same in the virtual world as they are in real life. Remember to claim expenses for your home office if applicable. For more information on the tax considerations for e-commerce and the Internet go to CRA and Canada Business and if in doubt contact an accountant.

Implications of Smith making the team
2008-03-30 18:02:00 Multiple sources are now reporting that Joe Smith has made the team in the final bull-pen spot.So here's the Bull-pen: Closer-WagnerSet-Up man- HeilmanSeventh Inning- Wise Late Inning LOOGY- FelicianoMiddle Reliever/early LOOGY- Schoeneweis, Ground ball Specialist/ROOGY- Smith Long Man- SosaSmith went from almost last on the depth chart to start the spring, all the way back to making the team. Once Smith started to show some of the form he had in the first half of '07' it made sense for the team to carry him. He's still a long way from that dominant reliever he was but was good enough to be given a shot and more importantly gives the team flexibility. I see him being brought in to induce ground balls when a starter runs out of gas and gets in trouble ( 6th inning - two on no outs). If he faulters, then Sanchez can be brought up when he's ready and Wise can be moved into the ground ball ROOGY spot. Smith would go down to further develop without any roster implication. Assuming t...

More Fantasy Draft Implications From The Red Sox & A's Series
2008-03-26 14:08:00 In the second game of the 2008 season, a few players have increased their draft price. The biggest beneficiary of the two-game sample is Oakland A's starting pitcher Rich Harden. He threw six, one-run innings and struck out nine Red Sox batters in earning the Win. I have little doubt his last two-and-a-half seasons of injuries will be forgotten as AL-Only leagues bid him toward the high teens. Mixed leaguers have been drafting him (ADP=190 with 100% drafted per Mock Draft Central). I can see that increased by a 30 or 40 spots to the same area Tim Hudson is being slected (ADP 154). The Red Sox Manny Ramirez will also benefit as his HR and 5 RBIs will effectively put to rest any concerns about Manny not being Manny in 2007 (20 HR & 88 RBI). In AL-Only leagues, he will go back to being a $30+ draftee, and,in mixed leagues, he will likely move upwards by 33% or so from an ADP of 34 to one near Carlos Lee (ADP=24). A couple of more minor effects w...

Eliot Spitzer & The Implications of Political Sex Scandals
2008-03-10 16:20:00 Sex scandals have been a part of American history since its earliest days – from Alexander Hamilton’s illicit affairs to Jefferson’s relationship with slave Sally Hemmings – and they’ve often been a barometer of America’s moral compass as well as an indicator of electoral outcomes. The prostitution scandal currently surrounding New York governor Eliot Spitzer raises many of these questions again. Are a candidate’s sexual indiscretions more outrageous than their abuses of power? Are immoral activities that are not technically illegal less offensive than those that are? And how do such scandals influence elections and the efficacy of governments?

Humanitarian Implications of Free Trade Agreements
2008-02-25 18:02:00 Free trade agreements such as NAFTA are lightning rods for political debate. Food aid to disadvantaged countries often comes in the form of American-grown crops, which are subsidized by the government and help support American farmers. However, many argue that the best way to aid struggling nations is to purchase their own crops and trade them on the free market. Are handouts the best solution to world hunger, or is cultivating agricultural trade in third world countries a better solution?

Super Tuesday's implications for Potomac Primary
2008-02-06 14:43:00 The results of Super Tuesday have left next Tuesday's collective Potomac Primary votes as key to the Democratic race but just another step to the inevitable on the Republican side.Hillary Clinton stands today as the slight favorite in the national Democratic nomination fight after holding most of the northeastern states and scoring a big win in California. Obama's wins in the South, Connecticut, Missouri and the Mountain West kept him as a viable player. In terms of delegates, both candidates scored close to even numbers again, owing to proportional representation.Obama can't win the Democratic nomination next Tuesday but Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia can help him rebuild some positive momentum. On the other hand, what would hurt Obama and in turn help Clinton in the media spin cycle is if Obama gets upset in one of the Mid-Atlantic jurisdictions. Microsoft Bids for Yahoo what are the Implications
2008-02-01 17:45:00 Microsoft has pounced on slumping Internet icon Yahoo with an unsolicited takeover offer of $44.6 billion in its boldest bid yet to challenge Google's dominance of the lucrative online search and advertising markets.Microsoft said it sees at least $1 billion cost savings generated by the merger, and intends to offer significant retention packages to Yahoo engineers, key leaders and employees.Reason for the BidDespite an aggressive push in recent years, Microsoft's online advertising expansion hasn't paid off. Last week, the Redmond, Wash.-based company reported a 79 percent jump in its overall profit, but its online division's loss widened to $245 million. And Yahoo has been struggling to attract more advertising even though its Web site attracts one of the biggest audiences. Implications of church being included
2008-01-24 18:52:00 Michael Silverman of The Boston Herald is reporting that the Mets are the front runners for Johan Santana. Well, we've been hearing this for almost two weeks now, but in Silverman's article their are two different names which may have roster implications for this year's team. Silverman lists Ryan Church as the major league ready outfielder and Mike Pelfrey as one of the pitchers. The Mets, and not the Red Sox or Yankees, remain the front-runner as the team most likely to succeed in pulling off a trade for Minnesota ace Johan Santana, according to baseball insiders in touch with both the Mets and Twins in recent days.A package the Twins could receive will probably not include both of the Mets’ top outfield prospects, Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez. There are indications that Martinez would be in the deal, along with major league outfielder Ryan Church and at least two other prospects. The Mike Cameron And Zach Day Implications For A Johan Santana Trade
2008-01-12 13:21:00 The Minnesota Twins signed RHP pitcher Zach Day. Coming off shoulder surgery last season, he pitched 36.2 AAA innings for Omaha with a 3.93 ERA but a horrifying 26/11 BB-to-K ratio. This is only noteworthy because Day could provide "veteran" presence if Santana were dealt. My guess, though, is he provides AAA insurance in case one of the five youngsters pitching in the major league rotation struggle mightily regardless of Santana's presence in Minnesota. Just as rumors of the Yankees' pursuit of CF Mike Cameron began, they ended when he signed a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. Speculation about what a Cameron signing would mean for current CF Melky Cabrera naturally lead to a Santana trade, that idea barely germinated once the Brewers decided to end 3B Ryan Braun's 2008 pursuit of a 40-error season at 3B. With Cameron in CF, Bill Hall will move to 3B and Braun will go to LF. Multi-position eligibility for Hall and Braun make both players slightly more val...
