Turkish ship in flames off Croatian coast
2008-02-07 06:58:00 ZAGREB (Reuters) - A Turkish freight ship caught fire close to Croatian territorial waters on Wednesday and was likely to sink though all crew members and passengers had been rescued, Croatian marine officials said. Croatia's sea and transport ministry said the incident happened 16 nautical miles west of the Adriatic town of Rovinj, but gave no further details. "We will soon release a detailed statement on the incident," the ministry's spokeswoman told Reuters. A local emergency official said the ship, which was heading for Italy, was carrying oil derivatives and trucks and was probably beyond help, although two Croatian fire-fighting planes were trying to extinguish the blaze. State news agency Hina identified the vessel as "Undadriyatik" and said it was sailing towards the Italian Adriatic port of Trieste. It also said 22 crew members and nine passangers were on board, all rescued by a Greek ship that was sailing nearby.
