In Other Words ~ Come Join Us!
2008-12-19 06:01:00 This post is going to stay second from the top until the end of December. Please read my recent posts below. F or the next two weeks, we are going to do something a little different, to give our hostesses a break, and yet still share some special quotes with you. I invite any of you who read the In Other Words memes and those who host, to share what your favorite quotes were or a specific post shared by a hostess that touched you, encouraged you, etc. So, this gives all of you a chance to write on a quote you wish you would have, rewrite on a quote you wrote on but wish you shared it a different way, share about how another’s post blessed you, or anything you wish to write about. Just leave a little blurb on your blog, and then leave the link below in Mr. Linky. If you do not wish to write about it on your blog, but want to share something anyway, just leave a note in the comment section above. Thank you! &-nbsp;
In Other Words: Tuesday’s New Quote
2008-12-15 07:06:00 N ext week’s In Other Words, will be hosted by Miriam on her blog, Miriam Pauline’s Monologue. She has chosen the quote below. Caught between what God says and what makes sense. You’ve done what he told you to do only to wonder if it was him speaking in the first place.” … “If you are asking what Joseph asked, let me urge you to do what Joseph did. Obey. That’s what he did. He obeyed. He obeyed when the angel called. He obeyed when Mary explained. He obeyed when God sent.” Max Lucado from “Joseph’s Prayer” in The Heart of Christmas &-nbsp;

In Other Words: Love Weighs More than Gold
2008-12-02 06:01:00 T his time of years remains a bittersweet time for us. On the 11th our son, Matthew will be in heaven four years. So many people gave of themselves during the days and weeks that followed, much of it a blur, yet some precious memories too. Something that stands out in our minds is that we were given a few hours notice on that first Christmas Eve, just 13 days after his death. Our church family was coming over to our house to spend time with us, so we were not alone. I think most met at church and then followed one another to our house. I will never forget seeing all the cars coming up our long driveway, one after the other, the car lights lighting up the darkness in more than one way. It lifted our spirits as well. Our house quickly filled up that night with so many from church, of every age - families that usually spent time with their own extended families, came and spent an evening with us. They brought food, some brought gifts, but most of all, brought love and un...

In Other Words: In Everything Give Thanks
2008-11-25 07:44:00 I n everything give thanks, can be quite hard to live by each day as things hit us from all sides. It is so easy to be swallowed up in our woes, to be discouraged when nothing seems to be going right and to demand where God is and what He is doing. Many times it is not until we are out of it, we can get a glimpse of what God may be doing. From the beginning to forever in time, He is still God, and in control. This past Sunday our church choir sang such a heart stirring song. I had never heard it before and wish I could share all the words with you, but because of copyright, I cannot. The song is called Still the Lord of All by Lloyd Larson. Here is the chorus: “Lord of all in times of plenty, Lord of all in times of need, Living water, You sustain me, Bread of life, my soul You feed. When the greatness of my trials leaves me weak and feeling small, I rejoice, Lord of the harvest, You are still the Lord of all.” The words to the full song are so powerful (...

In Other Words: True Beauty
2008-11-11 04:00:00 A s I put this new quote up on Friday, just hours before attending the funeral of a 54 year old man whose struggle with Multiple Sclerosis had ended, I immediately thought of his dear wife in these words. We’ve known Steve and Sue for over 12 years, attending church with them for a short time and Steve teaching our Sunday School class. Their eldest daughter babysat our older children (and now have children of their own). Our oldest three boys have worked for them. Though I would not say we are close friends, our lives have intertwined through the years, and I’ve seen Sue possess this beauty of Jesus as she has remained faithful not only to God but to her husband and family. I’ve seen the weariness in her eyes and remember her spending holidays in the hospital when her husband had yet another infection or medical problem. I’ve only had a tiny glimpse of the affects of MS, but I can imagine the stresses on a family, a marriage, relationships, and ...

In Other Words: God is still in control!
2008-11-04 06:00:00 A ren’t you thankful that no matter how today turns out, God is still in control and HE alone remains on the throne! Man cannot change that! Our votes, cannot change that! Concerned? Certainly! But God knows and He knows what we need as a nation. It may not be our plan or our way. I invite you to click below the video to John Piper’s video - but here is on excerpt of it: We need a big healthy dose that God rules the world. He puts up kings and He takes down kings. He’s going to govern this election. He’s going to get elected the one He wants elected and if it’s the person we think is hurtful, then we need to be hurt . . . We need to say the reason we’re on planet Earth, is not to advocate for any particular political party, we’re here to advocate for Christ and Him crucified and that Gospel may run a thousand times better during the worst of economic times than it does during the best of economic times. So how do we kn...

In Other Words: Deer & Angels
2008-10-28 05:00:00 W henever we go into town near dusk, our younger kids will beg for us to go the “deer way”. It’s along dirt roads and by several lakes and then in one particular area we always see deer. Sometimes there will be 40 deer, just grazing in the alfalfa field. We pause, watching. There are times they just stay eating as they watch us in return, but if one runs across the road to the wooded area, the rest follow. This happened one day this past summer when our youngest daughter who is five was with us. We had to stop completely to let them all cross over. We could see the deer in the woods, peering around the trees watching us, probably hoping we’d leave so they could go back to the alfalfa field. With eyes of wonder, our daughter in a whispered awe said, “They’re like angels . . . watching us.” So simple - yet so profound. We do not participate with Halloween. I hate it more each year. When our oldest children were yo...

In Other Words: Picking the Battles
2008-10-14 06:50:00 Sunday mornings are quite hectic here, getting everyone ready for church and out the door somewhat on time. With only two bathrooms for 5 kids over 14 years of age and 5 kids under 14, sometimes the kids don’t pass our inspection in what they are wearing. The older ones know our guidelines, but things slip by. Sunday I was frustrated with my older sons going to church with the unshaven “scruffy” look, which is suppose to be “in” and another son wearing jeans instead of dress pants. They knew . . . and though we should not have to tell them to make corrections, it was not discovered until after we were at church. We had words with each other, and as I am dealing more with adult children, it’s picking my battles - yet, more importantly knowing what is in their hearts. I could walk in the doors of my church with ten perfectly dressed children, but each of them (and myself) could have rebellious hearts towards each other, ...

In Other Words: Reflecting the Light
2008-10-07 06:00:00 It’s a whirlwind of appointments and events this week so I am keeping this post short and simple. This quote can certainly be looked at several different ways. However, Jesus being called “the Light” is repeated so often through the book of John that it should be our continual desire to be the reflection of the Light - to be reflecting Jesus on a daily basis. “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” John 8:12 “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” John 9:5 “I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness. “ John 12:46 “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” John 1:4 And then too, I think of the children’s song, ”This Little Light of Mine“. We do want to shine for Jesus - but may that shine...
In Other Words: I don’t just believe in God - I KNOW My God!
2008-09-30 06:44:00 Growing up in a Christian home and Bible-believing church, I believed, because - well, it was what I was taught and I almost “had” to. It can be easy to “talk the talk” and even “walk the walk” but do we really “believe” in the depths of our hearts and souls? Until I really lived life, saw what God has done for me personally, really understood His death and what He personally did for me, this growing process became a much deeper depth of belief. My belief in Jesus is every part of my being . . . even with my failures. There are times I forget, when I’m overwhelmed with the everyday things of life and momentarily forget, yes, God is in control of everything - even the lost shoe or the drier that won’t work . . . (and yes, even Wall Street, 401K’s, ATM machines and jobs.) A couple of weeks ago I received an e-mail from a reader asking me why I make “God” a part of every blog post - that I ...

In Other Words: Pressing Forward
2008-09-16 06:35:00 “Still, accepting God’s existence is one thing; honoring his command is another matter entirely, especially if we’re required to go back when we’d rather go forward.” ~Liz Curtis Higgs from Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible~ The beauty of writing on these quotes each week is each woman’s interpretations, and we come from all different approaches. I’ve not read the book, and do not know the specifics of what the author was writing about. I am writing it from ”my” viewpoint, because I know for me, it’s something God has been working on my heart with. I’ve been required to go forward, not back as this author shared. This what God wants “me” to do - and God may have something else for you. Sometimes we do need to go back to work through it, and work it out for the future. I’ve shared a lot about my son who passed away almost four years ago . . . and though we go back often to share and bring awareness, I don...
In Other Words: Pressing Close to God
2008-09-09 06:01:00 “For at least when we express our anger to God, our wrestling keeps our skin pressing into His. God is still present. When we honestly expose our inflammation, express our soreness, we are still staking our commitment to our relationship with Him.” Ann Voscamp from her blog post, Even if He doesn’t: Learn to Lament A s a new mom, the first time I heard one of my little boys tell me he did not like me or even “I hate you” and run away into another room was so heart wrenching. So, I’d go seek them out, and we’d try to talk about why he was angry at me. It would usually end in apologies and both of us in tears. Even now, teen kids can kind of get into those moods, and it sure can get frustrating trying to figure out what is going on now, being gentle, and making things right. As parents, we want to keep our kids hearts. God is the same way, understanding many times before we do why we are angry, why we aren’t speaking to HIm, and why we...
In Other Words: Reach out and touch someone
2008-07-30 02:18:00 We can tend to get into such a routine, we do not notice those outside of our box. Our box may be the same pew we sit in each week at church. We talk to the same people each week. But we don’t notice the lonely widow who comes in each week, and leaves quietly, never talking to anyone. She might be the one in your church in outdated clothing, appearing to not care how she looks and seems unapproachable. It’s easier to keep our distance, just observing, maybe even whispering “did you see what she was wearing this week?”. Little do we know that how lonely she is. She might glance at the little kids, and we think, she turns away from them, because she mustn’t like kids. Instead, it’s because her heart aches for the grandchildren that live across the country. Maybe she needs one of our children to just add some spark in her life, sing her a song, or bring her brownies. I wonder if she’d come the following wee...

In Other Words: Builders
2008-07-22 07:48:00 Afew days ago, I had this converation with my five year old daughter at the laundry line: Daughter: “Mama, when I am a mom, can I tell my kids what to do?” Me: “Yes honey.” slight pause . . . Daughter: “When I am a mama, I am going to let my kids have a popsicle whenever they want.” Me: “Really?” (not knowing what to say . . . and another longer pause.) Daughter: “Mama? . . . can I have a popsicle now?” Me (knowing I would win the meanest mom award of the day): “No honey, your room is still not cleaned up.” Daughter leaves with a long sigh. It didn’t work. But my husband and I sure got a chuckle out of it . . . one of those treasured little moments we tuck away in our hearts and will hopefully remember when she is a mama. (But then “I” will be the grandma and give her children popsicles whenever they want!) As moms we have a lot of building to do. I am in the p...

In Other Words: Peer Pressure
2008-07-15 16:44:00 Peer pressure - it’s not just a kid thing. How often are we sucked into it, to please others, to be like others, to follow others ideals of what godliness is rather than what God wants us to do. As women we can easily fall into it, with what to wear or not wear, to wear make-up or not, to have our hair a certain length, to cook only wholesome all natural food (despite our husbands wanting porkchops on the grill), etc. Some of you may remember the Gentle Spirit Magazine from over ten years ago that captivated many women’s hearts and ideals to follow. It was easy to pour more over that magazine and follow a woman’s thoughts of her desires, rather than to follow God, and what disappointment it was when the failings and sins of the author became public. It was an awakening that any person can fail us -yet it can be so tempting to follow man rather than God. It’s not just the people we look up to, but our friends that walk close beside us or others wi...

In Other Words: Sharing Paths
2008-07-08 04:01:00 Quote by Henry T. Blackaby & Richard Blackaby from their devotional book, Experiencing God The one word question “WHY?” has escaped my thoughts more than I can count. Many of the why’s will not be answered until I reach heaven - and then, I doubt it will really matter. But some why’s seem a little more fulfilled, when we see how we can use our pain, to help others. A few weeks ago, it happened again, as we gasped out loud to read in the paper, that friends of ours, who are grandparents, lost their first and only grandchild. The grandfather is also our dentist. We saw the ultrasound pictures in his office, and the newborn pictures after his grandson was born. I would often run into his wife at the store or Good Will and was shown the newest item for her little grandson and see the delight in her face as she spoke of a smiling happy baby. How we wished the death notice we read was not their grandson, but tragically it was. He was only 12 w...

In Other Words ~ His Plans
2008-07-01 04:14:00 This has been one of those “hang on to” verses through the ups and downs of life. But it became more real to me through a recent Bible study of Abraham. There’s so much I could share that touched me but re-visiting Abraham’s life, seeing the mistakes he made, and yet, seeing God stay with His covenant with him. God did indeed know the plans He had for him, and it was certainly to take care of him. And He did for us way back then too as we see the imprint of the coming of Jesus, His death on the cross, through Abraham. The picture of Abraham’s son, Isaac carrying the wood of the sacrifice up Mt. Moriah is an image of Jesus carrying wood, the cross on His back. The ram caught in the thicket was not the real sacrifice. It took place later. It was instead the Lamb of God, God’s son, not Abraham’s son. Yet Jesus know that His sacrifice would cost His life - and His sacrifice accomplished what no other kind of sacrifice could even come cl...

In Other Words: Perseverance
2008-06-24 22:29:00 P erseverance - it’s a pretty big word - that takes a lot of work. For a preemie baby it may be learning how to nurse, and a persevering mother to keep on trying. For a toddler, it’s learning how to walk and a five year old learning how to tie his shoes. As we get older, it’s persevering through algebra, driving, marriage and parenthood. It’s persevering through daily struggles and major life alterations. For a dear family we know, it’s now persevering through much grief and pain after the loss of their 12 week old son/grandson from SIDS. They have much to persevere through as each day right now is a struggle. Their friends and family need to persevere to carry them along and continuing to pray for them. Perseverance and can be a long lonely walk through the valley of the shadow of death and can be much slower than a snail’s pace to the ark. It may be perseverance just to get up in the morning and face another day. As m...
In Other Words: Think On These Things
2008-06-10 00:10:00 Ican be one of those day dreamers - giving myself panic attacks thinking of the “what ifs”. It happened a few days ago. My husband is self-employed as a small engine repair mechanic. Several times he has breathed too much exhaust, giving himself carbon monoxide poisoning. He puts larger garden/lawn tractors on hoists, which he’s never had fall on him, yet, but I fear it. His days can be busy with with phone calls, sales reps visits, customers coming to drop off/pick up items and his runnings about with pick-ups and deliveries and getting parts. He will work very late at night in the shop on repairs. There’s been several times I’ve fallen asleep hours before him to wake-up and he’s still not in bed. That night, I woke up with a jolt - where was he? I was so stricken with fear, afraid to call him on the speaker, so I walked out there, fearing the worst, holding my breath as I peered around the door. He was fine, thankfull...
In Other Words: Following Jesus
2008-05-14 06:11:00 So He went to her, took her hand and helped her up. Mark 1:31a A s Scripture is read, don’t you often desire to see more of the picture . . . know more of the story? This is one of those instances. Take the time to read the full text, but here’s a little more: And immediately after they came out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her. And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them. Mark 1:29-31 So Simon was married. I wonder what Simon’s mother-in-law was like. Was Simon’s wife so distraught about her mother? Had she been pleading with her husband to bring Jesus to their house? How long had the woman been sick? Did the men try to hurry Jesus along to the house - is this why it is said “immediately&l...
In Other Words: The Proverbs 31 Woman
2008-04-29 06:01:00 “”If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!’” “We smile as we read the wall plaque in the novelty store. But our smile quickly turns to a frown if truly “Mama ain’t happy.” This is because the wife and mother in a family often “sets the tone” in the home. The “tone” God wants her to set is one of joy, optimism, and a delight in the Lord and in her family. If your family were called upon to describe you, what would they say?” ~ by Martha Peace ~ “The Excellent Wife“ (excellent book - highly recommended!) U hhgggg! Should I really write on this one? Our home can be quite chaotic busy with ten kids, including teens and a baby that needs his diapers changed, homeschooling, the phone ringing for me, my kids AND my husband’s small engine repair business that interrupts meals, early in the morning, late at night and even Sundays (though we are CLOSED). In Other Words: Friendships
2008-04-22 07:57:00 “To be intimate with others is to reveal our innermost selves to them, including our emotions, thoughts and desires. For such deep sharing of the soul and spirit to occur, people must respect and trust each other. … In a world controlled by sin, however, to choose to be intimate is to choose to be hurt. Yet Jesus calls us to this kind of intimacy with Him and with one another.” ~ Kenneth A. Schmidt ~ A couple of years ago, I pretty much gave up on friendships. I’ve done a lot of reading on grieving and relationships after the death of someone close, and one thing that seems to stand out the most, is friendships and relationships change. You’d think friends would reach out more, try to be closer, but instead, many will run - not just my friends - but it’s common in most relationships that go through a tragedy. 2008-04-20 06:01:00 “”If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!’” “We smile as we read the wall plaque in the novelty store. I don’t know how m...
In Other Words: Tell Me the Story of Jesus
2008-04-15 06:01:00 “One of the most wonderful things about knowing God is that there’s always so much more to know, so much more to discover. Just when we least expect it, He intrudes into our neat and tidy notions about who He is and how He works. ~by Joni Eareckson Tada ~ D on’t you love it when your teach a little one something about Jesus, and it clicks in their minds, and their eyes light up as though to say, “wow”! Does this happen to you as you read God’s Word and learn more about Him? I am in a Kay Arthur Bible study on the life of Abraham. We have a Bible study manual in which we do research throughout the week, and then we get together, go over it, and then watch a video which Kay Arthur speaks. Last time the study was on the Covenant God made with Abraham and how it was a picture of His covenant with us - His death on the cross. In the Old Testament when they made covenants, an animal was split in half, and those making the covenant ...

In Other Words ~ Following Jesus or Following Man?
2008-04-01 06:08:00 “We must assess our thoughts and beliefs and reckon whether they are moving us closer to conformity to Christ or farther away from it. ~by John Ortberg ~ T his is certainly a thought-provoking quote this week - and another one of those things that was just discussed in my life. I was just talking to an “old” college roommate friend of mine today, about how our lives have changed, especially in our walks with God. In college she was so quiet and reserved. She came from a very conservative, legalistic upbringing. I remember her struggling with a lot of it. In time, she learned what was God’s convictions on her heart - not “man’s” rules. It was as though she had to be stripped down, and find her own faith, and find what God wanted of her, making the standards of her life between her and God personally. Certainly, her husband, pastors and her parents had an influence, but it ultimately came down to where God wanted her. S...

In Other Words: Pieces of my Life
2008-03-26 04:00:00 “Throughout the history of God’s people as given to us in the Bible, we see that life is a test. We have before us the option to trust God “no matter what,” or to walk away from Him. To walk away from God is to leave the fragments of our dreams in pieces on the floor, but to trust Him is to let God pick up the pieces and make us whole again. When we choose to let Him make us whole again, He will make our lives more beautiful than before ~What I Learned from God While Quilting~ by Ruth McHaney Danner & Cristine Bolley~ T his is being posted late on Tuesday, because I was cleaning my sewing/craft room today. (I did not even know what the quote was about until a short while ago.) I had too many piles and with now starting the Etsy store, I need to be more organized. I have been quilting since I was pregnant with my twin girls, over 16 years ago. I don’t do the fancy, elaborate type of quilting. I’ve done little hand quilting. ...

Freeze is futuristic in other words like Mr. India? - Neil Nitin Mukesh
2008-03-18 11:22:00 After garnering compliments for his debut performance in Johnny Gaddaar, Neil Nitin Mukesh has been signed by couple of big producers. One of projects he is doing is titled Freeze produced by Eros International, which will be directed by Jehangir Surti.Excited about his character in the film he says, ?I play an ambitious photographer who is rejected by the society. He then comes across a device which completely changes his life. Thus, struggling to make it big, avails a luring opportunity which changes his fate but later compels him to realize what exactly he wanted from life.? As far as the story of the film is concerned, he informs, ?Freeze (tentative) is futuristic in other words a science-fiction film based on the lines of Mr. India which also has huge amount of action in it.?Without divulging many details, the director of the film, Jehangir Surti says, ?The story is the USP of the film, something which has never been dealt before.? He goes on to add, ?It’s a romantic film...
In Other Words: Lists
2008-03-11 05:05:00 “We leave something incomplete everyday, whether it’s an area of housework, school, work, friendship, ministry ~ because we are finite.” Edith Schaeffer ~ The Hidden Art of Homemaking~ S o, how are you doing on your New’s Years Resolution list, your Bible reading list, the dreaded spring cleaning checklist, the homeschool catch-up corrections list, “Books to Read” list or maybe just your daily “To Do” list? Do you lay in bed in the morning, making mental notes of what you want to accomplish? And then at night do you do the same, going over those lists, recalling all the things that never were tackled, or possibly hardly anything on those lists? As I think of the lists I make, be it mental or written down, I wonder how often these are “my lists” and are not “God’s lists”. I wonder if it’s why God allows certain things to happen in our lives for Him to say, “Be still, and know I am God.&rdqu...
In Other Words - A Vision for my Children
2008-03-05 01:01:00 “ The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision. “ ~ Helen Keller ~ I am going to take a different approach to this quote, as a homeschool mom, who has to teach my children about having a vision. I may not used that word, vision, with my children, but I have to encourage my children to keep going even with school subjects they may think are dumb or just want to give up on. One of my daughters detests math, of any kind. She wants to be a wife and mom, and cannot understand why she has to do this. So we have to encourage her, that she will need it with budgeting, going to the grocery store and figuring out what is the best price (if a sale is really a good deal), or helping her husband with household and/or business finances and/or even homeschooling her own children. With a long sigh, she continues, and accomplishes it. She may not have a vision for it now, but we do, and so we have to keep her eyes open to proceed. As moms we need to ...
In other words Im stupid
2008-02-28 16:57:00 This morning after folding laundry I sat down (while Taite napped) and checked my email...I opened up a comment someone decided to write.. and it said"Homeschooling? No offense, but your blog is a killer to the English language. The grammar and spelling are horrid. Have you ever considered there are differences in the meanings behind there, their, and they're? You can't use one for everything. Suppose and supposed, affect and effect, patient and patience, and I could go on and on. If you plan on teaching your kids, think about your own education and your ability first. As far as expecting a three year old to count to ten, say his entire alphabet, dress himself, etc. you're nuts. When you stop putting pressure on him, maybe he'll WANT to learn. Think about the homeschooling thing long and hard. If you can't handle ABC's without going insane, you're not going to be able to do math, science, history, and not to mention, spelling."by - IzzyI am going to reply to this as if I am a...

In Other Words: Mama Praying
2008-02-19 06:01:00 “My Momma prayed, and momma cried, and momma laid awake at night. She would fight my battles while I slept away. Cause momma knew life is hard without somebody on your side. I don’t know how, but there is power in the way, The way my momma prayed.” Words & music by Jeremiah Olson of 40 Miles North Listen Here I imagine like many other moms, we probably more often replace the word ”prayed” with “worried”. How often do we worry, lying awake at night, worrying about the wayward child, the child out late at night who has yet to call home, or the just the plain “what ifs” of our children’s future lives. I am one who can easily get caught up worrying about my children’s lives - from the spouse they will marry; how they will support a family; to how am I going to continue homeschooling another 20 years? It’s almost like panic attacks when I begin worrying - and then, that still small voice says, &ldq...
In Other Words: The Heart of a Christian Woman
2008-02-12 06:01:00 “Why do our days seem so unimportant, filled not with romance and adventure but with duties and demands? We feel unseen, even by those who are closest to us. We feel unsought–that no one has the passion or the courage to pursue us, to get past our messiness to find the woman deep inside. And we feel uncertain–uncertain what it even means to be a woman; uncertain what it truly means to be feminine; uncertain if we are or will ever be…….And in all the exhortations we have missed the most important thing of all. We have missed the heart of a woman.” Quote taken from: “Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul“ by John and Stasi Eldredge I used to sit on my husband’s newspaper. It was a jealousy thing. He went out to work everyday, had a silent ride in the car to and from work, and then would come home, lay down on the floor and read the paper. I’d send the little ones his way, climbing all over him, u... |
