Creating A Companion Garden
2008-05-06 11:00:00 This week has been great! We had a four day break since there was a public holiday on Thursday (Labour Day) and the whole family has been home. We got out our rubber gloves, our guide to Great Garden Companions and all the garden tools... it was time to start digging! We have been working for 3 days and I must say it is so exciting and very rewarding! After day 2 it looked like this:And after another day of digging and planting, it now looks like this:I must confess, planting seedlings and young plants is so much more rewarding than planting seeds!Although we have planted seeds among the young plants, we will have to have patience and wait to see what it will look like then ;)The whole idea of Companion Gardens is to garden in a natural, biological and environmentally friendly way. No chemicals to get rid of bugs! And of course choosing companions for each type of plant is a vital part of all this. Each crop is grouped with other crops of the same botanical family or according to nut...

A Dem Dustup In The Garden State
2008-04-08 18:30:00 Blue Jersey has been all over the story of Dem congressional Rep. Rob Andrews running in the primary for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Frank Lautenberg (here and here), with Andrews? wife Camille currently serving as a ?placeholder? of sorts while her husband tries to knock off Lautenberg in the primary (she has not yet declared whether or not she would run for her husband?s House seat in the general election). If Andrews loses to Lautenberg, might he decide to defend his Congressional seat after all, even though the Newark Star-Ledger thinks this is it for Andrews in the House regardless? And how could he do that after the filing deadline for the Congressional election had passed?Hey, we?re talking about New Jersey, OK? Anything can happen. My concern about Andrews in the Senate would be that he could turn into that state?s version of Tom Carper in Delaware, who is the closest thing our party has to Joe Lieberman this side of Ben Nelson (kind of circuitous I know, but apt I ...

Venomous Snakes In The Garden - How To Avoid The Danger
2008-03-19 04:02:00 In areas where poisonous snakes are known to visit gardens, three approaches are commonly adopted by the homeowner. One is to be so frightened of the thought of such creatures lurking in the undergrowth that the outdoor space is paved over instead of being turned into a garden. A second approach, by far the more common, is to be unaware or to ignore the potential danger and to pretend it does not exist. The third and best option is to continue to use the garden without fear and trepidation, but to take one particular step that for all practical purposes, removes all possibility of venomous snakes threatening the safety of those who use the garden. The legitimate fear of snakes should neither deter one from planting a garden, nor from covering the earth with some form of organic mulch; actions that encourage wildlife to visit the garden and even take up residence there. The garden, in order to function as a healthy, vital and balanced eco-system needs in fact to be a magnet for as m...
Frog Love In The Garden Pond...
2008-03-18 15:09:00 Today must have been just right for some Frog Love... I popped out into the garden this morning to see how the frogs were getting on, as it's usually around this time of year they spawn. I was greeted by this smiling frog, so I guessed something had been going on. Lo and behold some spawn and a mass brawl with the other frogs. I have seen around 10 frogs in my pond at once , and I think most of them are here. Out of all of the frogs, the females must be at a premium, as only this happy couple were actually mating. The rest were getting back legs in their faces from the lucky male, who was holding on for dear life. This one must have had enough and was content to watch the snail float by.Have your frogs spawned yet ?

The Use Of Retaining Walls In The Garden
2008-03-13 04:00:00 It is relatively easy to make your garden more beautiful by building a retaining wall, which has a lawn or area of flowers behind it. A retaining wall needs to be strong enough to withstand the pressure of soil weight behind it. It must also be porous enough to allow adequate drainage. Walls made of either dressed stone or rubble are the most popular. When using stone for your retaining wall, you can choose from between two kinds of construction. Dry-wall construction uses earth as filler between the stones. Mortar construction uses cement as the bonding agent. It is important for the base of a retaining wall to be below the front line, or about six inches down in the northern parts of the United States. For a wall without buttresses or projections, the width of the base should be one-quarter the height of the wall. Walls can taper to a width of about one-quarter of the base width. Walls with buttresses should have bases that are one-quarter as wide as the wall is high. This measur...

Gardening Guide - Tips For Getting Rid of Snails and Slugs In The Garden
2008-02-04 03:06:00 So you go to your favorite garden shop and purchase two beautiful pepper plants. It took awhile because you had to sort through all the plants to find the best, most healthy ones. And they were not cheap. Seems like the price goes up every year. You go home and select that perfect spot in the garden and plant your new peppers. The next morning you wander out to the garden with a cup of coffee to admire your new peppers and to see if they have miraculously grown six inches overnight. Then your heart sinks as you discover your plants are gone. Not just nibbled on by some bug...they are gone. You have just been victimized by the scourge of the garden. Slugs!Snails and slugs (I'll just refer to slugs hereon) can completely devour a small plant in one sitting. As well as take huge chunks out of the leaves on larger plants. Perhaps slugs have some benefit to mankind, but I can not think of any. Certainly not in my garden. So, how do we get rid of them?First, no matter what method you event...

Mulch In The Garden - The Different Types And How To Use Them
2007-12-18 07:12:00 There are many reasons for spreading a layer of pebbles or wood chippings on top of the soil around the garden plants, otherwise known as mulching. A mulch layer is said to retard weeds, regulate the top-soil temperature, save water by reducing evaporation from the soil and prevent soil erosion. All this is true in principle, but merely spreading some mulch does not necessarily produce satisfactory results. How then can it be used most effectively? The use of an inorganic material like decorative pebbles, is often part of an overall design, especially in Mediterranean style gardens. They are best employed as a ground cover, with a few sculptural plants dotted within them. If the bed however is to be covered by plants, then pebbles from my experience, end up being more of a nuisance than a benefit, because they make plant feeding and weed removal amongst other tasks, more problematical.Let's take then a situation where a prostrate ground cover species is to be planted at a distance o...

Feline Obsessions
2007-12-08 16:06:00 I have noticed a strange habit all cats seem to have in common. Our house cats as well as the strays out in the garden love to sit under the washing lines!Could it be the smell of the fabric softener? The fact that the clothes are cold and wet perhaps creating an "air conditioning" that they enjoy?I do not know what it could be, but they all seem to be obsessed with the washing! Now that it is winter and we are hanging our clothes in the house, the house cats come running down the stairs to the clothes lines as soon as they hear you fidgeting with the washing. They sniff, they rub themselves all over the place... it's quite annoying actually since i'm allergic and don't appreciate them putting their fur all over my clean and still wet clothes! The outside cats loved the washing lines too. They are strays and very much afraid of us, yet they would come real close and sit under the washing while i was hanging it! Weird!I've come to think it's either all cats, or it's our fabric sof...

Look Out, There's a Dinosaur In the Garden!
2007-11-22 10:06:00 also known as the Monkey Puzzle tree. But what's it doing in the garden? Do some of us have a fondness of prehistoric monsters? Are we nuts about ugly things? Don't tell me there are people out there who actually like this tree, because what's to like? The razor sharp, needle like leafs that coat both the trunk and all the branches from top to bottom? The fact that it grows to a 60 to 70 ft height or even a whopping 150 ft in favourable circumstances? And you do know it is going to be about 30 tot 35 ft wide? Do we really have that much space to waste on this worst of all Stephen King's nightmares come true? And it really is a dinosaur. Apparently it was already visually obnoxious about a cool 60 million years ago. And it is still here today. Why?Well, we got some Brit to thank for that: Archibald Menzies (naval surgeon and botanist) who attended a state dinner in Chile late in the 18th century. And there he was served some seeds from the Araucaria araucana tree (yes, the officia...

No More Kitties
2007-11-15 11:49:00 Unfortunately the last little kitty died too. He died at the vet. (30 Oct 2007) We had taken him there at 3am this morning because he refused his food and was vomiting. He was the last of 3 kittens we had rescued from the freezing cold outside last week. It's been a terribly sad and draining week. You pour your heart and time and love out for these little creatures who depend totally on you for survival and then their little tiny bodies just cannot fight the cold or the illness that attacks them. We tried so hard. The vet kept him all day - in the morning he had shown signs of improvement, he was on a drip (IV?) and had antibiotics and they were keeping him warm, but it seems between the cold he had suffered when his mommy abandoned them, the infection in the eyes they all had, the upset tummy and losing his siblings and mommy maybe it was just too much for a little one like that. He was happy yesterday... he purred almost all day. He spent most of the day cuddled in my hand again...

Good News!
2007-11-15 11:47:00 This little one, now named Sharky, is showing signs of improvement! This weekend after his little sibling died moments before entering the Vet, he became all bloated and wouldn't do his toilet business. I was getting worried because it seemed like he was swelling up and I didn't want to overfeed him, but he wanted food! (he bites when he's hungry!) So we returned to the Vet on Sunday (they are open 24hours a day, fantastic!) and they helped him to let it out. Relief! He stopped crying so much and calmed down, he relesed a lot during the night too and today was very very weak it was worrying. He refused food and was looking like we might lose him too, he was really skinny. I was so sad. I prayed for him. Later, around 4pm he suddenly started squealing again and walking around, almost his usual behavior, a good sign. The whole day he had just slept... and purred, but wouldn't eat and could not hold himself up on his feet he was so weak. After the squealing and walking around the p...

Grief, Another Kitten Died
2007-11-15 11:36:00 Unfortunately also this little kitty didn't make it. He died today around lunch time. My mom woke me around 11am telling me to call the vet - i ran upstairs and called him, he was out and gave us the number of a clinic to call. We called and explained that he was not responding and breathing was not regular and that our own cat, Kyoko has a sneeze... they told us to bring all our cats in asap. So we jumped in the car with 3 cats, Kyoko plus the last 2 kittens and rushed to the clinic. Unfortunately this little kitty died just before we could get the Vet to see him. Tragic. You know it is such a feeling of uselessness and hopelessness and grief when you have put in so many hours to do your best and take care of this tiny creature and in the end you find that your efforts were either wrong or in either case useless. One vet had told us to feed them every 4 hours, this one told us every 2 hours! The poor kittens were starving but because we didn't know and they didn't squeal we ...

She Didn't Make It
2007-11-15 11:31:00 Unfortunately this little kitten did not make it. She died at 4pm today. I was so sad and cried a lot. Had tried so hard to keep her warm and comfortable. Her little legs were no longer strong enough to hold her and she kept toppling over so needed constant care to keep her upright and reposition her legs since she had very little control over them. This photo was taken shortly after lunch when she drank a little milk, but only a little. She died 3 hours later. We think it was a lung problem since she often gasped and yelled throwing her head back.. that's what caused the toppling over. My sister had wanted to keep this little kitten, she was her favorite. She seemed to be the strongest and biggest just a week ago. The mommy cat had taken her out of the box twice in the last week and now we know why. We learned online that cats often remove a kitty if it is ill for fear that the others might get sick too. And that we should not put it back with the others. We did and that was our ...

A Kitty Story
2007-11-15 11:28:00 This is a sad story about how I saved one kitten and in the process doomed his siblings... I might have already blogged about how a stray cat had given birth to 2 litters of kittens in our yard this year. I had recently found one of the little kittens from the last litter in a tunnel under some cement slabs out in the cold, crying. The mommy was right there in the garden but didn't seem to mind the little one's squeals so I thought maybe she doesnt know how to save it, maybe she's a bad mommy, maybe she put him there... all sorts of thoughts were running through my head but the most important thing was that this little one was sad and alone and cold and his little siblings were calling for him too! all 3 in a bundle So I removed a cement slab and reached in the tunnel to get him and return him to the box with the other 2. They were all happier after the reunion. ^_^ phew! Tonight, about a week later, we return home late in the dark and hear the little one squealing again so we go...

We Found Kittens!
2007-11-15 10:35:00 We have a stray cat in our yard as some of you already know. She had kittens earlier this year (5, but 2 found another home, 3 remained with mommy in our yard) and recently she had 3 more baby ones and has moved them into our laundry room. She found a soft, warm spot in an old wash basin in which we had left our house cat's old blankie in a box.
