2008-04-21 13:29:00 So, I'm back. Not from the woods, but from the swamp. I worked at a motocross race down in South Florida for the weekend. I don't do many races, but this is a track I like and we usually have a good time. I think the kids miss me because I'm gone from Thursday through Sunday night, but it gives us all a little break. Also, my parents have headed back up North for the summer. That's always hard. The kids miss them and so do I. I get used to having them right next door and sort of take them for granted when they're here but it was hard pulling in on Sunday night and realizing that they weren't just a few footsteps away. Ruins in the Woods
2007-11-01 18:19:00 I found the remains of this very old cabin off trail, high up in the mountains a few months back, nestled in the trees on the edge of a remote lake system. It looks as though the construction was abandoned, whether the builders season ran out and they succumbed to the cold or they found a better location, who knows! Old cabins like this remind me of Dick Proenneke, who lived and built a log cabin in the Alaska wilderness, if you can get a hold of the video or book titled "Alone in the Wilderness", of this amazing man, you'll be awed at what can be achieved without the conveniences of the modern world. I'm half tempted to go finish what the builders of this structure started ;)
What A Stink In The Woods Today....
2007-10-30 18:07:00 I have to confess that I have a soft spot for Beech trees and their leaves. They aren't the most colourful of leaves, but I just love the pale green and yellow and I don't think you can beat them on a beautiful sunny Autumn day like today's, they just glow. My walk in the woods today was in Abbey Woods, this is a wood that surrounds the ruined Haughmond Abbey , just outside of Shrewsbury,Shropshire. Abbey wood is mainly a mixed deciduous wood, with plenty of beech, oak, horse chestnut and hawthorn around the edges. There is one patch of pine trees that will be harvested at sometime. It wasn't long after taking this picture of the beech trees all in a row, that I started to smell a bit of a pong, I couldn't quite identify it but it definitely had a rotten meat tinge to it. I eventually tracked down the smell and it was coming from a mushroom I haven't seen or smelled before, a Stinkhorn Mushroom ~ Phallus Impudicus. It certainly lives up to its Latin and common name.
