Incense is Psychoactive
2008-05-28 01:51:00 A new scientific study has found that the smell of burning incense alters our brain chemistry, helping to alleviate anxiety and depression: Biologists from Johns Hopkins University and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem have discovered that burning frankincense (resin from the Boswellia plant) activates poorly understood ion channels in the brain... Reporting their findings in The FASEB Journal, the researchers said that the active compound - incensole acetate - significantly affected areas in the brain known to be involved in emotions as well as in nerve circuits that are affected by currently prescribed anxiety and depression drugs. "In spite of information stemming from ancient texts, constituents of Boswellia had not been investigated for psychoactivity," said researcher Raphael Mechoulam. "We found that incensole acetate, a Boswellia resin constituent, when tested in mice lowers anxiety and causes antidepressive-like behavior. Apparently, most present day worshipers assume tha...
Incense Is Good For The Brain
2008-05-26 20:04:00 Religious leaders have contended for millennia that burning incense is good for the soul. Now, biologists have learned that it is good for our brains too. An international team of scientists, including researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, describe how burning frankincense (resin from the Boswellia plant) activates poorly understood ion channels in the brain to alleviate anxiety or depression. This suggests that an entirely new class of depression and anxiety drugs might be right under our noses.
Incense fragrances from Tauer Perfumes, Demeter, Matthew Williamson
2008-04-23 02:57:00 Yesterday I wore two discontinued favorites: L'Artisan's lovely Jacinthe des Bois and Gobin Daudé's Sous Le Buis. Layered, the combination was the perfect spring-time fragrance: happy, floral, and very green. But the cool evenings of spring are also perfect for incense fragrances. Here are four worth considering: I loved Incense extrême by Tauer Perfumes, and I can't remember now why I took it into my head that I wouldn't like the newer Incense rosé nearly as well. Whatever the reason, I was quite wrong, as I like it even better. This is a simply lovely fragrance, not quite so bright and airy as the extrême, but still, not quite dark: it has the same soaring quality. The rose is subtle, in fact, the whole thing is simultaneously subtle (none of the notes scream) and strong (I found two sprays to be one spray too many). The citrus in the opening is juicy, and the rose is a bit dewy in the early stages, but for the most part, it is a dry fragrance, and while it has more of a gro...

Demeter Incense ~ new fragrance
2008-02-20 17:11:00 Next up from Demeter, Incense: Demeter?s incense is a warm, deep, rich blend of exotic notes. It is inviting and enveloping, the kind of scent that is both simple and complex at the same time. There is no effort needed to appreciate it, yet every time you experience Incense from Demeter you will find new depth and nuance. Demeter?s Incense is centered on a unique core of Copal. Copal is a type of resin produced by plant or tree secretions, particularly identified with the forms of aromatic tree resins used by the cultures of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica as a ceremonially burned incense, as well as for a number of other purposes. More generically, the term copal is now also used to describe resinous substances in an intermediate stage of polymerization and hardening between more viscous and 'gummy' resins and amber. Demeter Incense will be available in 15 ml Cologne Mini-Splash, 30 or 120 ml Cologne Spray, and in matching bath & body products and Room Spray. (via demeterfra...

Tauer Perfumes Incense extreme ~ new fragrance
2008-01-05 20:51:00 Coming later this month from Tauer Perfumes, Incense extrême, a new fragrance based on a natural CO2 extract of Boswellia serrata (aka Indian frankincense): This natural incense scent inspired me to create different perfumes, with "Incense extreme" being the most abstract, almost cubist and uncompromising interpretation. It captures the roughness of the climate of the semi desert where Boswellia trees thrive. It is translucent like the first whiff of incense smoke from frankincense resin on red gleaming coal. Yet, it is crisp like a night in the desert. The Boswellia serrata extract is the central cornerstone of the fragrance, at a concentration of 25%, rounded off with dry woods and ambergris in the background. Soft iris balances the incense in the heart of the fragrance. And coriander and the freshness of petitgrain set the accents in the opening. The richness of the natural incense enchants with an array of impressions, playing differently as it develops, a kaleidoscope of co...

Incensed.
2007-10-04 19:18:00 Tonight is the big night. Opening night for the Flyers. It figures that they’d start the season playing Western Conference teams…they’re in Calgary tonight, and their game against the Flames starts at 10 PM EST. UGH. I will probably be very, VERY cranky tomorrow morning. I seriously have to find a new way into work. I am getting VERY FRICKIN’ TIRED of the idiots that I have to deal with on one road every morning. Coming home, there’s no issue (at least on that road!), but in the morning, it’s an absolute nightmare. I’m sick and tired of it. This morning, I planted the front end of my car about a foot away from the driver’s side door of some dumb bitch who thought she would be tricky and skate through the red light…which left her sitting in my way in the middle of the intersection while I had the green. When she saw my headlights coming at her, I think she about had a heart attack. I just sat there and glared at he...

Bahrain: Incense-wafting Journalism
2007-05-06 13:36:00 Author: Ayesha Saldanha This week in Bahrain bloggers have been preoccupied with topics including sycophancy, the welfare of foreign labourers, and the culture of alcohol consumption. But let?s start with Tooners, who describes in detail an argument she had with her sister-in-law about child care, which resulted in her telling her sister-in-law exactly what she thought of her: I have not been able to stand this wannabe princess/demonic thing since the very beginning but have held my tongue for the sake of the family and for my husband, but since he was fine w/ my telling her what I thought?. well?. I can?t tell you the weight it took off of my shoulders. And she has decided to take refuge in her nationality: This argument has done a couple of really good things. One, I don?t have to pretend to like the demonic thing any more and two, everyone knows now that I?m not playing around any more, and I guess they can look at me as the rude American? because now? I will say ...

Irradiation (Finally) Getting Its Due; Anti-Tech Activists Incensed
2007-03-27 17:00:00 On Sunday, NBC's Dateline profiled a cutting-edge technology that could work wonders for the American food supply ... if activists would just let it. (Click here for video.) Irradiation -- a process that exposes meat, poultry, and produce to extremely low levels of radiation in order to kill food-borne pathogens -- is tremendously effective, perfectly safe, and doesn't compromise food quality. But it's not an industry standard. That's primarily because anti-tech activists -- like the ones at the misleadingly named Center for Food Safety (CFS) -- have successfully stoked anti-irradiation anxieties among consumers. As Dr. Dennis Maki, an epidemiologist and Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, rightly noted in a related question-and-answer on MSNBC.com:When you realize that every large health organization around the world has basically endorsed irradiation as a mechanism of food safety, that speaks volumes to me. None have refused to [endorse irradiation] ... There ...
Coiled Incense
2007-03-17 12:43:00 One of many coiled incense hanging inside a Chinese temple located along Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There was actually an array of them hanging down from the ceiling, but I only picked one out and focused on it and the smoke it generated.
Incense Named "The Delight"
2007-03-05 06:27:00 ט"ו ב×דר תשס"×–My newest incense recipe to banish negativity is called "The Delight" השעשע.2 parts frankincense (olibanum) שש2 parts organic rosemary ×¢×¢1 part dragon's blood ×”The kabbalistic Hebrew letter correspondence for each ingredient is listed above and was abstracted from a standard table of correspondences, with the exception of rosemary. The Hebrew letter correspondence for rosemary was derived as follows:Rosemary = כליל-הרtotal gematria = 90 + 205 = 295digit sum = 16The 16th letter of the aleph-beit is ayin ×¢.Shashua is the first level of revelation of the Essence of the Divine Aur Ein Sof. From the Inner Dimension:The twice repeated syllable sha (shin ayin) represents in Kabbalah the number (370) of lights that radiate from the countenance of God. When they shine out of and then back into the consciousness of the Divine countenance a sha'ashuah, delight, is born.I prepared my first batch of השעשע this evening, 15 Adar 5757, during the 6th ...

What the hell are frankincense and myrrh?
2006-12-13 14:35:01 Most, if not all, of us are aware of the story of the three kings/wisemen/magi (Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar) who visit baby Jesus and come bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Sixteen years of Catholic education, and I never really learned what the heck frankincense and myrrh were. According to Wikipedia, Frankincense or olibanum is an aromatic resin obtained from the tree Boswellia thurifera or B. sacra, B. carterii (Burseraceae). It is used in incense as well as in perfumes. From the same source, Myrrh is a red-brown resinous material, the dried sap of the tree Commiphora myrrha, native to Somalia and the eastern parts of Ethiopia. Myrrh is currently used in some liniments, healing salves that may be applied to abrasions and other minor skin ailments. Myrrh is a constituent of perfumes and incense, was highly prized in ancient times, and was often worth more than its weight in gold. In ancient Rome myrrh was priced at 5 times as much as frankincense, though the latt...
