Happy 62nd Independence Day
2009-08-13 23:51:00
Just got home (at 2am) after being stuck on Islamabad's roads for a few hours. Cars, bikes, vans, you name it; they were all out on the roads, crawling at a snail's pace and blocking all intersections. However, it was nothing to be mad about. Pakistan's 62nd independence day is here and the party has just started. Seeing all these people, one forgets all the trouble this country's been facing. Terrorism, inflation, unemployment, instability; tonight, these appeared to be the last things on anyone's minds. There were even people riding bicycles while waving the national flag and it's an even bigger celebration than the recent one for the Cricket world cup win. A friend of mine once called the Americans the most flag-waving nation on earth. Guess he should visit Pakistan on one of these occasions. This show of spirit, which was partly just letting off some of the pent up steam, is encouraging. I hope we can all continue with such energy and channel it into productive ways...

My wife and I rented Knowing, a newly released (on DVD) movie with Nicolas Cage in it.  I have to admit I love end-of-the-world, science fiction movies.  Some of my favorites are Deep Impact, Independence Day and Core. There is a scene in Knowing, where the professor character that Cage plays, explains two competing views of ...

Happy Independence Day!

I always associate patriotic holidays like July 4th with Ray Charles and America The Beautiful. Before I head out for the day with friends and family to have a great time, I will say a prayer for all those who have given their lives for my freedom and I will think about all those men and women out there right now fighting for and defending my freedom. I hope you will, too. Have a Happy and Safe Independence Day!

An idea for celebrating Independence Day with your kids
2009-07-03 03:02:00
“That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States” What is the most important Independence Day tradition? “Celebrating Julie’s birthday!” “Fireworks!” “Barbecue garden burgers!” “Beer!” Ummm, no. Although Julie’s birthday is tempting and I’d be there if I wasn’t knee-deep in moving boxes and looking to bust out of my parent’s house…for good this time. No, the reason for this particular season is The Declaration of Independence, people. A beautiful piece of poetry, this document deserves to be read *out loud* at least once a year to your children, loved ones – hell, even to yourself. Yes, fireworks and parties are fun, but that’s not the reason for the season. Our forefathers and their wives were wicked brave and, to honor them, we should understand why they stepped to the British monarchy in the first place. Then go blow off body parts. If you don’t have a copy at hom...

Independence Day Greetings for India
2008-08-15 08:31:00
Adil NajamToday is August 15. India?s Independence Day.As we have done every year (here and here), we send all Indians sincere and heartfelt Independence Day Greetings and the very best wishes. We pray for a peaceful and prosperous future for both countries. May our futures be defined by friendship, mutual respect, and prosperity. In 2006 we had expressed similar sentiments by presenting some pictures from the past. In 2007 we shared images that expressed these sentiments in the present. Today, our thoughts are focussed on the future. Rightly so, because the future of India-Pakistan relations looks more uncertain on this day today than it did on this day in 2006 or 2007.There are grave reservations on both sides of the border about which way things are going, and why. All the more reason then to pray for peace, justice, goodwill, and friendship. All these sentiments become much more meaningful, and much more difficult to believe in, when things are bad than when they are not. None of...

Independence Day
2008-07-05 19:50:00
I took part in the local Peachtree Road Race 10K race yesterday. That's a bit misleading, because just by saying that I kind of imply I ran it (which would be wholly out of character). I walked it, though still managed to lose half my body weight to sweat (gained back in the following hours through a steady diet of beer and buffalo wings). It was a pretty interesting experience -- in retrospect I want to say fun, though when I finally finished up that wasn't the first word that came to mind. This is a goddamn hot city, and very humid. Not news, I know, but it's instructive to occasionally get a reminder of just how hot and humid. Over the years I've met people who claim to find humidity invigorating, and all I can say to them is that they are sick, sick people. I'd be less bothered to find out they were into necrophilia. There's nothing good about humidity and it should be avoided at all costs.Still, I'm glad I did it. My entire body still aches, nearly 36 hours later, but I...

Happy Independence Day
2008-07-04 22:52:00
Today is the day Americans celebrate the choice, more than 200 years ago, to break with England and become an independent nation. Most people really don't think about that decision too much, but if you take a look at it objectively, it took some serious balls. No country had ever done that before. Ever. I sometimes wonder how different history might have been if our founding fathers hadn't made that decision. How long might it have been for any other country to take that leap, if ever? The French people revolted in part because they had a precedent - the Americans had successfully destroyed the mutually agreed-upon illusion that Kings were akin to Gods.I remember in 1976 when this country was celebrating that decision all year long as part of the Bicentennial, and every freaking class, club and organization I was in did *something* related to 1776. During that year I visited Philadelphia (site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence,) Washington, D.C, (where I saw the a...

Excerpt from a Romaninan newspaper, Evenimentulzilei article, called "Ode to America," written by Mr. Cornel Nistorescu. via God, Faith and a Pen blog of Dr. Hesham Hassaballa. ~ An Ode to America ~"Why are Americans so united? They would not resemble one another even if you painted them all one color! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations and religious beliefs. Still, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the Army, or the Secret Service that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape about. Instead the Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as ...

Blacks and Independence Day
2008-07-04 14:50:00
I ,for one, don't celebrate Independence Day. The holiday has no significance to me other than the fact that it commemorates the birth of the wolf-in-sheeps-clothing that brought my ancestors to this part of the world. The only "Independence Day" that I celebrate is Juneteenth. If you dont have any idea what Im talking about, heres a shorty on the holiday from Juneteenth.comJuneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popular...

Independence Day Getting Later for Today?s Teens
2008-07-02 22:19:00
The definition of “independence” is different for the 18-year-olds of today. Independence Day is this Friday.  What does it mean to you?  What will be on your mind?  To many, the 4th means charcoal, hamburgers, hot dogs, a day off of work, and fireworks.  The cost of liberty will be a distant thought, and that’s unfortunate. But how much worse to go through this week without appreciating ...

Independence Day in Austin
2008-06-02 10:06:00
Independence Day is quickly approaching, and there are many ways to celebrate the birth of our country in Austin and the surrounding area. There are numerous fireworks displays as well as performances by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, and other musical events in different locales in the county area. Until a few years ago, the huge, city-sponsored pyrotechnics display was held downtown over Lady Bird Lake, which was called Town Lake then, but the yearly celebration moved to Zilker Park a few years ago. The celebration will be held again over the lake this year, and the event, which is sponsored by the HEB grocery chain, will feature the Austin Symphony Orchestra under the apt musical direction of Peter Bay. The 1812 Overture, accompanied by 75-millimeter Howitzer cannons, courtesy of the Texas National Guard Salute Battery, is usually the centerpiece of the yearly city fireworks display, and this year the celebration will be held at Auditorium Shores in front of the new Long Center ...

Independence Day, our way...
2008-03-12 17:09:00
Yesterday was awesome, everything went as planned. I can say with full assurance that it was the best Independence Day I've ever had! OK, for those who haven't understood what it's all about, we had a sort of picnic yesterday, was at Baie du Tombeau, somewhere near a tree, rocks and the sea. The event had been planned some weeks ago but I was fearing that it would never occur. But it did! :PI was supposed to cook something but since I was kind of taken up the previous day I made some sort of tortillas with chicken and mushrooms. The other foods were awesome. OK, this is sounding more and more like a kid's essay. To end this I'd say that it was a totally crazy day, the kind of day you wish could come everyday! hihi! I haven't got photos of the day but you can check out at Rooch and Keli's place for pics.So long dudettes and dudes and my independent aliens. I'm looking forward to the next independence day! Yayy!

News: Kosovo, Independence Day
2008-02-19 21:38:00
L, a friend working in Kosovo, sent me her story of the Kosovo Independence day, a sequel to her previous post.Sunday morning, Feb 17 2008.Kosovo awakens to another cold day, covered in a mantle of snow. It might be its last day as a Serbian province. We have agreed to meet for brunch in the market, at what we call "Police Avenue", right in front of the Justice and Police Department. There are a lot of known faces, internationals, some with a hangover from the day before, taking re-hydration salts to recover and get ready for today, the big day..On Nena Theresa Street, paved a few months ago, they've been preparing since the early morning. This is where the celebration's epicenter will take place. There is a stage and stalls sell everything: food, drinks, t-shirts (damn, I didn't get a chance to get mine) and fire crackers. The first laughs, first stories of the night before come out, of how our Serbian friends are holding up, of the news that we keep getting...None of us have th...
Independence Day– Kosovo Style
2008-02-18 08:07:00
A tense quiet holds in Kosovo as the nation initiates its independence from Serbia. NATO peacekeepers believe they have the situation under control. A recent study reveals people in Kosovo are among the most optimistic in the world regarding what the future holds. The feeling of optimism comes from having the support of the European Union even though Russia is violently against the action. The choice of Sunday, Februaryy 17, was intended to link with the meeting of 27 EU member states in hope there would be quick recognition of the event. There are 3,300 French troops stationed in northeastern Kosovo in case any action is taken by Serbians in that region to circumvent the independence process. It is reported the Serbian army has agreed to observe a five-kilometer corridor to avoid any conflict with European Union forces. The original fear the northeast heavily Serbian area would break away and declare its independence from Kosovo apparently has disappeared. EU officials expect rheto...
