Solving local indexing problems
2008-08-04 09:33:00
This post will be short but useful. The problemRecently I've checked one of my websites having a solid unique content of 400+ pages. When I went to Google's Webmastertools Dashboard and clicked on the Top search queries I've got 2-to 9th position on most of my content, but still the traffic was not comparable to the competition's.The surpriseI quickly clicked on one of the search keywords and to my surprise the web page was not listed on the suggested position, but few SERPS pages further. What was the reason behind this? Then I started to run advanced search queries from Google with the Language attribute set. Again to my surprise the results were accurate, but only when the language attribute was set.The analysisThen I investigated my meta tags and those of my competition. The analysis showed that I've restricted the traffic flowing to my website by choosing explicit meta language and country definition. This way the ordinary users who've got their Windows installed with no r...
Google Indexing FTP Address URL?s - Is This a Security Risk?

While searching Google earlier today I was very surprised to notice that one of the listings returned in the top 10 was an FTP site! Digging a little deeper and I found that there are actually millions of ftp://ftp.domain.com addresses indexed in Google, all of which appear to have read access permissions granted to the ...

Keyword Relevance Equals Targeted SEO Indexing
2008-05-03 06:53:00
The function of keywords is to attract the search engine ’s attention. Once attracted, the search engine lists the site that contains the keyword. Troubleshooting a Sprinkler System Indexing Valve
2008-05-01 21:42:00
Here is a question from Neil,I have a flotec 1 1/2 hp pump which gets water from a large retention pond. The pipe that goes into the pond is mounted on a pvc sled that I made to keep the pipe off the bottom. I have a K Rain 4000 series 5 zone valve (6 outlets, 1 capped) that sometimes skips a zone. In my trouble shooting process, I removed all the screws from the top of the K Rain valve, but have not figured out how the top comes off. Does it twist off clockwise or counter-clockwise? or does it come straight up? Also, once the cover is removed, will this cause my pump to lose it's prime? I dont know if these are related, but In another issue, a few weeks ago, my pump had lost its prime, so I replaced my check valve down by the pond, which seemed to solve that issue. Or so I thought.. My lawn had been getting water for a few weeks since I replaced the check valve, until the other day. At 6:45am I saw the sprinklers were watering on a zone. At 7:00am when the sprinklers should...

Google indexing content within form submission areas
2008-04-11 21:39:00
I was just looking at Matt Cutts blog and noticed he mentions that google is now indexing content found only by submitting form fields.  It seems they just started to, and only do so for some sites right now, but it is an interesting development. For good or bad, depending on the page content and need of the web site. Matt lists an example of a drop down with countries to select before moving to an inside page.  Another example is many sites have a jump to box saying something like "I want to:" with values in the box.  I see this often in municipal web sites.  I want to renew my license, pay my parking ticket, look up my property tax assessment, etc.  [More]
Frequent Search Indexing
2008-04-01 03:42:00
This article is guest posted by Shannon Lilly. We are often puzzled by what frequent search indexing helps our sites do better via the search engines. If you have had these questions yourselves then you are on the right track to finding answers. When selling advertisements to my advertisers I have often been asked what the normal cache date of my home page is. Meaning they want to know how often it is indexed, I was puzzled for some time as to what this helps or even matter. But now that I have been doing seo for a few years and have some experience under my belt I now know. To put it bluntly the reason we should work toward frequent indexing is because it is an indicator by the search engines that that website is authoritative and worth getting a link on. However, the thought behind it being a ranking…

SEO And LSI: How To Use Latent Semantic Indexing
2008-02-15 16:07:00
People get worried when they hear about terms such as SEO and LSI, and when they try to find out how to use latent semantic indexing, they get even more worried when they get conflicting messages. On the one hand some say that LSI doesn't exist and therefore can't be used, while others, on the other hand, state that it is critical to your website's success with the search engines. We all know what computer people are like, the way they try to make acronyms of everything. LSI is one of these, although not quite what you would call an acronym. LSI does exist, but not in the form that Google would have us believe, and not in any form that you can use to make your website 'LSI compliant'. Anybody claiming that they can do that are simply playing Google's trick and using big names for what is a very simple thing to do.LSI or LSA?Without going into any detail as to the mathematical background of LSA, it can be used, and is used, to determine the relevance of a passage of text to any ...

Blogs - Google spent 7 hrs indexing my blog, New blog name
2008-02-10 10:56:00
After I made my blog static, Google just spent 7 hrs indexing about 900 entries of my blog, which has a total of 1350+ entries. That's quite amazing. I'm expecting more traffic soon. Google is great. I just made the changes only about a day a go and now Google is all over it. I hold utmost respect for this great company. Speaking of which, the name Rt-sight here isn't even permanent. It's only temporary. I'm thinking of a better name. The blog will be just the same, only the name changes. Reason is that I've been using Rt-sight as a username in various websites and I want to disconnect it from my blog. I'm thinking of a name that has something to do with: 1. Rt 2. Sight 3. Sur-gery 4. Car-diac 5. MD 6. ...... Note that none of this identifies me as a person offline.

Google Is Not Indexing Yahoo MyWeb
2008-01-03 04:09:00
I love looking at websites as to how Google and Yahoo index the pages of these sites.Last week, there were 3 million pages of digg.com being indexed by Google. The truth of the matter is that Yahoo has more pages saved on its server than what Google has. Google is somewhat choosy. If you have a million pages indexed by Yahoo, most propablyYahoo has 2 million pages for you.Yahoo's social bookmark tool called del.icio.us is not well indexed by Google. Last time I lookedat it, the number was only 70,000 plus. So think it over again when you save your page in del.icio.usknowing that Google won't index it, perhaps. Okay, let's go to myweb.yahoo.com, which works as Yahoo's personalized bookmarker. This is not yet so popular but there are thousands of pages already bookmarked in myweb.yahoo.com. Today I check in Google how many pages of myweb.yahoo.com being indexed by Google.Let's just admit that Google's index is very important as it is the world's most favor...

Windows Live search: No longer indexing Google ads
2007-12-20 14:54:00
Whew, sounds like Microsoft didn’t anticipate that it’s own crawler will be indexing Google AdWords ads. And no, don’t get the idea that it will help just because your ad link “gets more exposure” (oh wait, it does help). It’s pretty interesting to note that even those ads can rank up fairly well for certain terms. The problem is this: In an attempt to increase the relevancy of the search results, Live search now includes links pointing towards pages blocked by even robot.txt files (well, it only told it to not crawl the page, but didn’t tell it to not count the stuff inside the links pointing to the page). Again, it shows that Microsoft ain’t following the robot rules completely, because those ads are only present in Google search results, which are disallowed to be indexed by the robot.txt file. Let’s hope other ads won’t pop up as well. Though, this wasn’t the first time it has happened before… :)...-

LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) : The new face of search
2007-11-20 11:30:00
Latent Semantic Indexing How do you look up for information on the internet? You type in the words in a search box and wait for the information to come up. But if you go through the results in detail, you will find that after the first few results pages, the rest are all irrelevant to the term that you searched for. This is the retrieval method that is popular the world over today but will be soon replaced by a highly sophisticated model called LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). LSI is a new concept based retrieval method which uses a term and document matrix to describe or bring out the occurrence of terms in various documents. The results have been known to be 30% more effective than any conventional form of search that has been used. Why it worksThe reason why LSI works can be attributed to a term called ‘Shared words’. If you are searching for the term ‘mobile phones’, you might miss out on the result pages which also have the words, ‘Cellular Phone, lightweight, camera p...

Google's web indexing architecture targeted by patent lawsuit
2007-11-13 10:15:00
Google is being sued by both Jarg Corp. (a privately funded search technology developer) and Northeastern University, parties to a patent which they claim describes the database technology Google uses to quickly index web information. The Boston Globe reports that the patent in question (No. 5,694,593, dated Dec 2, 1997) was granted to Northeastern in 1997 and exclusively licensed to the aforementioned Jarg Corp. It's not clear when Google began allegedly infringing on the '593 patent.

Indexing for Passive Aggressive Investors
2007-10-24 14:18:00
Let’s dispel the notion once and for all that index funds are only for passive investors. Sure, the original index funds tracked the S&P and were meant for investors who either believed you couldn’t beat the market or didn’t want to try. Since their beginning, index funds have expanded their breath. You can find a fund which tracks any of the major indices and most industry sectors, such as health care and technology. The first cousin of index funds, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), do the same thing – they track indices. Between index funds and ETFs you can mirror any major index, small index, industry sector, industry sub-sector (i.e., biotech or software), global region or individual country. You can also try to outguess the indices if you want. For example, you can buy a S&P index fund which weights all 500 stocks equally or one which weights them by market cap, and so on. (Note to investors: make sure you know...
