Lalu Yadav and the Indian Railways - Performance subsidizing populism
2008-02-26 23:52:00 The Economic Times reports Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has done it again. This year’s rail budget has cut fares and freight and announced 63 new trains, significant concessions for women, students and porters, ‘world-class’ railway stations and other amenities, besides a fancy IT initiative that includes smart cards for suburban Mumbai passengers. And yet, it has projected healthy financials and substantial investments to enhance the railways’ carrying capacity and productivity. And we are told its not all election rhetoric the railways’ report card in the current fiscal shows a sharp reduction in accidents, cash surplus of over Rs 25,000 crore, record return of 21% on capital, 31% increase in Plan spending and 15% rise in traffic earnings on the basis of just 8.6% rise in freight volumes. The operating ratio—operating expenditure as a proportion of revenues (lower this ratio, more efficient the railways)—is down to 76.3%. The operating ratio had climbed to uns...

Now Free Internet access and Satellite television on Indian Rails
2008-02-19 13:50:00 Indian Union Railway minister -Lalu Prasad Yadav - the darling of the masses and the favorite whipping-boy of the media has added another feather to Indian railways. Two premium trains of India - Shatabdi and Rajdhani - will now be boasting on-board free internet and direct-to-home (DTH) services. The premium trains have been consistently loosing market share over past couple of years to low cost budget airlines offering very competitive rates. In a bid to stem this loosing streak, the Indian railway minister is expected to announce many new initiatives including Free Internet access and DTH services.
Indian Railways + Facebook = Cash cow!!
2008-02-04 08:44:00 Watblog, a guy I follow at twitter, just talked about Indian railways opening up their APIs so that anybody could access railway data and implement train reservation systems on their website. I am sure this will be at some sort of fee based system. More details at the link on the blog header. Now, imagine this. Better servers at the railway people's end (at this point of time, the "tatkal" time period of 0800 hrs always results in a whitescreen at their site, and I can never reserve an ad hoc ticket at peak hours, due to connectivity issues)And a facebook developer who develops an app so that I can reserve my train tickets via facebook itself. Cash cow, baby! Somebody read this post and start designing that app, already!

Branded Trains from Indian Railways
2007-10-04 04:52:00 In a move to earn more revenue, railway administration is introducing a new concept. The idea is to give brand names to trains for example Airtel Mangalore - Ernakulam Express. As part of the campaign railways will give whole of a particular train or some compartments for the advertisement of the company. The companies who are taking up these compartments can make all sorts of ads inside or outside the boggys. But the compartments should be converted back to normal before giving it back to the railways. Is'nt is such a great and innovative idea by Lalu and his boys? Not only that as far as the companies are conerned it will be great opportunity to reach the mass.

2007-07-18 08:45:00 Indian Railways is discarding the computerised system for enquiry regarding train timings and reservation and reverting to the manual service. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Tuesday inaugurated the new railway enquiry phone number 139 by asking the operator about the timing and first class air-conditioned rail fare of the Patna Rajdhani Express. The phone number 139, to be available in four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, is part of the integrated train enquiry system (ITES) called Rail Sampark consisting of interactive voice response system and regional call centres, Railway Board Chairman Jai Prakash Batra said. The flying "Indian Railways of 80s"
2007-01-29 15:04:00 Ooops! I did it again.Well I have flown with these guys for at least 5 times if not more and all those 5 times my experience has been like, I better not talk.It is the flying Indian Railways, but the railways of the 80’s.So what happened this time? My brother had come over to Hyderabad from Nigeria after more than 1 year, and Jan 12, 2007 being a long weekend, yes we a day off on Jan 15 for Pongal/Sankranti.I thought if I book an early evening flight to Hyderabad I can have a nice evening with my nephew and my niece; and the only flight available was of this flying Indian Railways of the 80’s. They say “We are a low cost airline.” Indeed they were a low cost airline this time; where the others were two to three times costlier than this. And this is where I made the mistake and I did it again. So my flight departs on Jan 12, 1800 hours. On Jan 11, 2020 hours I receive an SMS that my flight has been rescheduled to depart at 2250 hours. Well rescheduling is acceptable if it is d... |
