Bionic Asks: Indie or Brand Name?
2008-06-06 20:31:00
There?s a new poll on Bionic Beauty. I?m asking you ?Overall, would you rather purchase major brand name or independent brand skincare and makeup products?? I know I’m usually an indie fan, since I get a kick out of searching out the gems that other people may not know about. I guess it appeals ...
Katorse Shorts @ Indie Sine
2008-06-03 16:35:00
For too long, short films have remained the forgotten artform; a consistently underrated medium that has never beengiven the exposure it demands. Even with the emergingpopularity of independent films in the Philippines, shortfilms are still seen as "front acts" forfull-length features or "sidebars" at local filmfestivals. The Katorse Writers' Group, a group of youngwriter-filmmakers who were part of Ricky Lee's 14thScriptwriting Workshop, addresses this problem by coming upwith a full program of short films to be screened atRobinson's Galleria Indie Sine.On June 11-17, KATORSE SHORTS will showcase 7 short filmswith themes ranging from the romantic to the absurd to thetragic - a program that is meant to bring to theconsciousness of Filipino audiences the short film as aform that can hold its own.Katorse shorts line-up:Ang Kapalaran ni Virgin Mario by Ogi SugatanAmbulancia by Richard LegaspiManyika by John WongPuwang by Anna Isabelle MatutinaDead Letter by Grace OrbonLababo by Seymo...

When you are building a crew for your first, second, or even 100th movie, it’s always good to ask yourself just how much crew is necessary to complete the film. Do you really need all those people loafing around the set? Trust me, you won’t have to worry about left over donuts…the actors ...

CANNES, France (AP) — It’s indie movies versus Indy’s movie at the Cannes Film Festival. Indie 12 - Amore
2008-05-13 13:22:00

In which I say farewell to the Indie Kids
2008-05-06 19:03:00
Predictably, the readership around here has taken a dip since the Blog-achella project ended and I'm no longer posting the same music as every other blog in the blog-o-sphere (did I say "blog" enough in that sentence?)... but you know what? Good! I don't need fans of flavor-of-the-day blog bands around here... I need you folks who appreciate the good stuff... like so...Assuming that you don't recognize that album cover on sight, I'll tell you it's Skintone Collection, a compilation of Japanese producer Susumu Yokota's best work on his own label (Skintone, that is). This guy isn't super-well-known in the states, but that hasn't stopped him from being ridiculously prolific... he's put out something like 32 albums - you know those crazy Japanese with their "work ethic" and "efficiency"... hmph! Now, I'm guessing with 32 albums, there's gonna be a bit of crap in there once in a while, so this is a good place to start if you wanna check what this guy's about. He does all...

Indie Artist of the Week: Canada's The Weakerthans
2008-05-04 23:21:00
The Weakerthans, a Canadian indie band from Winnipeg, put themselves on the music map back in the late 1990's, and have been impressing critics and fans with subsequent, yet limited, releases ever since. The band's latest album, Reunion Tour, released last fall, has received wide praise by the music press, bloggers and fans, making many top album lists for 2007.Comprising an exciting mix of punk revival and melodic indie rock, Paste magazine hailed Reunion Tour as a collection of "songs of brutal beauty, little rock n roll vignettes that perfectly capture the malaise of the peculiar, disorienting times in which we live."Here is the hit single music video "Civil Twilight" from The Weakerthans' Reunion Tour CD:Propagandhi member John K. Samson left his former band and joined Red Fisher drummer Jason Tait and bassist John Sutton to create The Weakerthans in 1997. Later guitarist Steve Carroll and bassist Greg Smith joined the lineup. The band, especially founder, John Samson, doesn'...

Sonic Youth - SYR7: J?Accuse Ted Hughes
2008-05-01 01:31:00
Noise rock maestros Sonic Youth have certainly had a long prolific career. Aside from releasing nearly twenty albums, they have also had a long string of EPs. The SYRs (Sonic Youth Recordings) are a series of experimental EPs released independently by the band, usually pushing avant-garde sounds to an extreme. SYR7 is a stark contrast ...
Peter Moren - The Last Tycoon

It?s easy to forget sometimes that songs are important. The amount of energy, money and hype that goes into making a band well-known often overshadows the fact that their songs aren?t that great. Last year Peter Bjorn & John struck a winning combination of good songs and good press and made a ubiquitous indie pop ...
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

MGMT are, along with Vampire Weekend, the most droppable name out of New York City right now, and have been heralded with the loudest buzz of advance hyperbole of any NYC band since the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, if not the Strokes. Nokia and Spike Lee Target UGC, What about Indie Producers?
2008-04-24 12:46:00
With the announcement that Nokia has teamed with Spike Lee to create a series of shorts for the UGC community is certainly a positive step for the handset maker seeking to extend into more diverse markets. Certainly, UGC is huge and the goal of converting millions of eyeballs into dollars has been Holy Grail for YouTube and a slew of smaller companies. That Nokia is using their platforms; I gather the N95 along with a name director is certainly a good marketing strategy. Certainly, this is not the first company to seek to work from the top down. © The New York Times According to Mr. Lee who has admitted to being technologically challenged said, "I'm interested because it's a great collaborative effort," Mr. Lee said. "Within five years, new movies will be made with devices like these." I agree, but made by whom? A couple of years back Nokia had what I thought a killer platform for production, namely the N93 that unfortunately did not gain traction as was discontinued. Wh...

Guillemots’ previous singles have been little mini-masterpieces, whether it be the optimistic knees-up of “Trains To Brazil” or the yearning wistfulness of “Made Up Love Song #43″. The first single from their 2008 effort, ‘Red’, proves they haven’t lost their touch. It’s their most commercial moment yet, but it retains their slightly quirky edge. There’s ...
