Work in the Kitchen with Only One Hand
2009-09-09 19:23:00
As the quality of life improves for all of us, one thing we will need to spend some time on is looking after our aging population. Again I expect Design to play a major role in making this happen, and it has! The One Hand Kitchen by Gabriele Meldaikyte is a great example of universal design. The product allows people with disabilities, arthritis or even low muscle strength, to do things like an able bodied individual would. In this case I would say: nothing makes Granny more happy than empowerment! The ability to go about her life as per normal and on her own steam.
Repair is the new Recycle
2009-09-08 18:32:00
I repaired a gramophone from 1910: The mechanism was broken. Therefore I attached my Iphone to the horn with a soft foam connective piece over the Iphone?s loudspeaker. This results in a wonderful sounds, especially horns sound amazing. Vince Vijsma, Amsterdam, the Netherlands I remember when I was much younger, I would love to take stuff apart, modify it and put them back together. I actually learnt how to solder wires at 10 or 11 and that help me repair my damaged Radio Control Cars. Luckily I'm a better electrician than a driver! So I was quite tickled when I read about Platform 21's Most Remarkable Repair Contest. The work submitted really resonated with me!
For Those that want More out of their Clocks
2009-09-01 11:03:00
Check out this clever reinterpretation of a wall clock called QLOCKTWO by multidisciplinary design agency Biegert & Funk. The QLOCKTWO clock visually spells out the time in 5 minutes intervals that is somehow more engaging than the traditional digital or analogue clocks.
Is this another Apple Inspired Fad in the Works?
2009-07-06 08:50:00
Jabra Go 6400 headsets. Via: Fastcompany When Apple launched their G3 "Bubble Gum" colored transparent iMacs in 1998, the world loved it. And as a result Apple was reborn. Unfortunately, the world loved it so much that almost every other product released was either transparent or in "Bubble Gum" blue/pink/red. The same thing happened with their white/black iPods and Macbooks. Suddenly the world suffered from a color deficiency and far to many fingerprints. The problem was that in 90% of of the time, the application of these elements were wrongly seen as "only just a surface treatment", or even just a fad.

Dieter Rams and his 10 Design Commandments
2009-02-28 16:35:00
My first exposure to Dieter Rams was through a German lecturer I had at school that really idolized him. Perhaps it was that constant, "Dieter did this" or "Dieter would have done that" that really put me off! Now that I think about it, he even looked and dress like him! However through out the years, I have come to recognize Dieter's extensive and important influence over modern industrial design. I know we have discussed Dieter before, but I have decided to create a post specially dedicated to this design legend who also happens to be going through a second renaissance. Do enjoy! Beautifully Simple Staple-less Paper Holding Solution
2009-01-28 14:25:00
Once in a while I would come across a design idea that is just pure brilliance, I just have to share it here with you. The sheer simplicity of the solution is just mind boggling. So much so that it sends tingles down my spine. Furthermore, when you start to bring the potential environmental impact into the picture, you can really see that this is just "great design" in action.
Acquisition of Industrial Design Companies, a Good Thing!

Industrial Design and The Branding Mad Men
2008-10-05 12:26:00
It’s about time, the (M)Ad Men figured that out. Well they sort of did before and there always been Industrial Designers in advertising and branding. But much of the focus then was on packaging design, and Industrial Design was often seen as nothing more than skinning. Core77 has a pretty good article called “Stepmothers ...

A Blueprint for Design Education 2.0
2008-06-18 06:06:00
I often like to get myself into a spot of teaching, collaborating with and critiquing students. I find it enhances and consolidates what I have learned in my career in Design. I do recommend that designers, especially the senior ones, take some time off work to rub shoulders with people in a learning environment. But I digress. During some of my short exchanges at academic institutions, I noticed that most design educators have to struggle with juggling and managing studio projects and yet still maintain the academic requirements of tertiary institutions. Many times these requirements do no align. So I had and interesting thought. Is it possible that the foundation of structured rigorous learning that academic institutions are built upon, is not really conducive for the more fluid project based and lateral thinking style of a design studio? If so, what if we had the opportunity to create a design program from scratch without any influence of, for example, a Unive...

Is Industrial Design Dead?
2008-05-01 04:37:00
So csven and I were doing our usual "ping-pong" discussion on Twitter. This time we were talking about The Death of Industrial Design. Csven laments that there is a confusion on what an Industrial Designer does, as the world sees it as styling and making beautiful things. Basically it looks like we just do shallow stuff. (Check out the post for more background information.) Perhaps in my view, has the definition of Industrial Design changed? Perhaps we should not be called Industrial Designers? If so what should we be called?

With the introduction of the computer age came the emergence of a whole new array of industrial design possibilities. The technological age, it seems, knows no bounds. A Cross-Pollination of Creative Ideas at Blueprint 2008

Yesterday, at the height of the Singapore Fashion Festival, I was invited to view a wonderful fashion show that was unlike any other. Called Blueprint 2008 the show was a result of a cross-pollination of ideas between fashion and industrial designers. What I liked about it was that the work was part sharing and part collaboration of ideas between fashion and product designers, with both inspiring each other to greater heights.
