Yesterday I informed our readers that, as part of the Google Factory Tour, Google had announced the launch of Google Health. (...)
Bioenergy Europe 2008 Highlighted the Infancy of the Debate Surrounding Bio
2008-02-29 14:06:00
The biofuels sector has seen increased activity over the past few years. Recently, it has been in the eye of a veritable media storm. While Governments across the world have put in place mandates and subsidy schemes to encourage production of biofuels, there have also been a number of cautioning voices, warning of the ...
Interesting Questions! Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adu
2008-02-02 10:46:00
Interesting Questions!  I hope the punch line brings a smile to your face. If a man is standing in the middle of the forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him...is he still wrong? Atheism is a non-prophet organization? If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation? Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery? Where do forest rangers go to "get away from it all?" Why is it called tourist season if we can't shoot at them? What was the best thing before sliced bread? Would a fly without wings be called a walk? Why is the alphabet in that order? Is it because of that song? I know why the numbers are in this order but not the alphabet:-) If the "blackbox" flight recorder is never damaged during a plane crash, why isn't the whole damn airplane made out of that stuff? Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny? How is it possible to have a civil war?...

Tomgram: Collins and Frantz, Pakistan's Nuclear Wal-Mart in Its Infancy
2007-11-28 08:44:00
by Tom Engelhardt There they go again. While Somalia burns at one end of "the arc of instability" (as Bush administration officials liked to call a swath of territory from North Africa to the Chinese border in the good old days before they thoroughly destabilized it), at the other end, the Taliban is now considered a "permanent presence" in more than 50% of Afghanistan and nuclear-armed Pakistan is in increasing chaos. As if that weren't enough, Bush administration supporters and officials are already starting to plan for, or call for, more of the same when it comes to solving Washington's problems — that is, militarizing them further. Various possible military interventions in Pakistan are now clearly going on the table. They range from sending American military trainers into Pakistan's tribal areas to train a supposedly pro-government militia force to the mad suggestion that U.S. Special Forces extract Pakistani "nuclear materials and w...
Preventive Measures for SIDS during Infancy
2007-09-07 00:59:00
SIDS or Sleep Infant Death Syndrome cannot be totally avoided within babies but parents can resort to the various measures to avoid it from getting out of hand. The usual suspect lies in the type of bedding or sleeping position that infants have and while everything may seem safe, a close look at everything may ...

Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy
2007-08-02 03:16:00
Breastfeeding should ideally continue beyond infancy, but this is currently not the cultural norm and requires ongoing support and encouragement. (from The American Academy of Family Physicians Position Paper on Breastfeeding) The AAP…recommend[s] that babies be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months and that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for ...
Travelin?, Man!
2007-07-04 16:56:00
On July 2nd, Cooper’s very first trip came to an end at 10:30 PM, when we landed at Austin-Bergstrom Airport. He did very well, and slept through most of the flights. There was very little fussing while he was awake, as he often seemed transfixed by all the sights and sounds of the airports. It was ...
Freaky Cooper
2007-06-25 04:06:00
Sometimes while Cooper is feeding and starts to fall asleep, I can see his eyeballs start to roll back in his head. I know this is a natural occurrence with the onset of sleep, but to watch it is quite jarring. I have issues with anything eye-related as it is, and to watch my infant ...
The Many Sounds of Cooper
2007-06-01 13:37:00
Cooper has an impressive range of noises. He has an ability to make sounds with his mouth closed that I can only duplicate with my mouth open, and he can even coo while simultaneously feeding, which I’m certain is beyond the capability of the rest of us mortals. Is it any wonder that a baby ...
Payback?s a Bitch
2007-05-27 16:44:00
Last night was payback for the string of relatively easy nights we’ve had with Cooper over the past week. It’s as if he’d regressed about three weeks. He was awake multiple times, and would hardly drink any of the formula we prepared for him. It looks like constipation again. Let’s hope tonight goes a little ...
The Soothing Sounds of Johnny Cash
2007-05-26 21:03:00
Cooper was fussy this morning, and I wasn’t quite sure what to do, so I flipped the iPod on and started playing some Johnny Cash songs. He was either bored or soothed, because he was asleep within five minutes. I don’t think of relaxation when I think of Johnny Cash, but the 4/4 time and ...
3 O?Clock Feed
2007-05-26 17:12:00
I had a nice feeding with Cooper from 3-4 AM today. Absent was my usual impatience and frustration. Maybe it was the Vicodin and Soma that I had taken at night for back pain, or maybe I’m growing up a bit. I was able to enjoy the time, watching his eyes look around in the ...
Nice Camera, Dad!
2007-05-19 05:19:00
Originally uploaded by rbseaver. I know I’m biased, but how could you not love this face? I snapped this picture of Cooper tonight after some fussiness. As you can see, he had calmed down quite a bit here, and appeared very intrigued by my presence.
Spit Up
2007-05-06 18:20:00
Last night Cooper spit up, and it wasn’t just a little dribble. It reminded me of one of those statue-type fountains where water shoots out of the figure’s mouth. Unfortunately for Cooper, formula also came out of his nose, which looked pretty bad to us. On the other hand, Cooper sat there and let it ...
A Routine
2007-05-05 16:39:00
I may be getting optimistic a bit too early, or seeing things that aren’t there, but I do believe Cooper might be showing signs of getting into a routine. Can I get a “hallelujah”? I said, can I get a “hallelujah”!? Amen, brother! The past few nights, he has allowed us at least a couple ...
The Radish
2007-05-01 04:09:00
Is it wrong that I find a great deal of humor in watching Cooper’s face turn a radish-red color when he gets angry? Probably so, and it’s likely he’ll get me back for it someday, when he hits adolescence… or age two.
Gettin? By With a Little Help
2007-04-26 20:31:00
Last night, my mother offered to stay overnight and watch Cooper, and we accepted that offer. I’m conflicted about this. On the one hand, both of us got a good night’s rest — better than we’ve had in over a week. I feel recharged and awake, unlike the past week where I’ve felt like a ...
Bologna
2007-04-24 23:33:00
Conventional wisdom says that newborns will need to eat every two to three hours. Bologna, I say! Cooper can down two ounces of formula in a sitting, but chooses to down about an ounce or less at a time, and then pass out after twenty minutes. He then wakes up in forty-five minutes or an ...
Enjoying Every Minute
2007-04-24 01:55:00
I thought I was doing well at first with the midnight feedings and diaper changes. It was tough, but just looking at Cooper was enough to make me forget that I was up at a ridiculous hour taking care of him. Things have changed drastically over the past few nights. I have barely been able ...
A Diaper Story
2007-04-21 23:51:00
Last night while changing Cooper’s diaper, I experienced a sequence of events that I’ve heard told many times over by new parents. Things were going well; I had removed the soiled diaper and was moving to the next step when I was hit with a stream of liquid that seemed disproportionately excessive in both amount ...

2007-03-10 00:50:02
Related Articles Social mixing with other children during infancy enhances the antibody response to a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine at 1 year of age. Clin Vaccine Immunol. 2007 Mar 7; Authors: Salt P, Banner C, Oh S, Yu LM, Lewis S, Pan D, Griffiths D, Ferry B, Pollard A Children with siblings and/or who attend day-care have higher rates of nasopharyngeal colonisation with pneumococci than lone children. Pneumococcal colonisation is usually asymptomatic, but is a prerequisite for invasive disease. We studied the effect of mixing with other children on immunity to a pneumococcal vaccine. One hundred and sixty children aged 1 year were immunised with a 7-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine. A blood sample was obtained before and 9 - 11 days after the vaccine. Concentration and avidity of antibody against vaccine-serotypes (4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, 23F) were studied in relation to pneumococcal carriage rate, and measures of social mixing. Children with increased social mixing had...
