Challenge of Nintendo's Wii Fit is finding it
2008-06-01 20:06:00 The LA Times is reporting that the weak American dollar is making it hard to track down copies of Nintendo's newest craze. The new game, which retails for $90, offers more than 40 activities that challenge players in areas such as yoga, aerobics, strength training and balance. It comes with a motion sensor platform that resembles a large bathroom scale, which users stand on, and requires a Wii console to play. At GameStop, a chain that specializes in video games, the first shipment sold out days before it arrived as shoppers plunked down cash to pre-order the game. On Friday, Circuit City's website had the game in stock at 8:50 a.m., but was sold out 10 minutes later, according to NowInStock.net, a website that tracks online stores for hard-to-find items. On EBay, Wii Fit has been auctioned for as much as $150, a 66% markup. Some who managed to find Wii Fit had to go to considerable lengths. For the full story, click here!

Apple planning biggest back-to-school promo yet
2008-05-30 13:40:00 The Apple Insider is reporting that Apple, as early as Monday, is expected to announce its 2008 back-to-school promotion, which will encourage students to purchase a new Mac through some of the biggest incentives in the company's history. High Five!Company senior vice president Ron Johnson stoked anticipation of the promo a few weeks ago while addressing some of his retail staff, people familiar with the matter say. Specifically, Johnson is said to have promised that this year's promo would be the biggest "ever" for Apple. While it's unclear exactly what that means, speculation among those familiar with past promotions believe there's a possibility the Cupertino-based company will tie some of its touch-screen handhelds into the mix -- like the 8GB iPod touch. Last year's promo offered teachers and students up to a $199 rebate when they purchased a qualifying Mac and either a video iPod or iPod nano at the same time of purchase. The deal translated into a free 4GB iPod...

Is Blu-ray Worth It?
2008-05-30 13:35:00 There's a great story over at Tech News World that talks about Blu-Ray, and how the standalone players will fare in the coming years. When HD-DVD maker Toshiba conceded the high-definition DVD format war in February, Blu-ray's backers may have hoped that sales of the Sony-championed format would see a big boost. However, while Blu-ray may have triumphed over HD-DVD, sales for the device have not exactly skyrocketed. An April 30 report from The NPD Group, a U.S. sales tracking firm, found that standalone Blu-ray players sales dropped 40 percent from January to February and grew a minuscule 2 percent from February to March. Where Blu-ray sales remain fairly stagnant, the number of videos viewed online, on the other hand, topped more than 10 billion in the U.S. in February alone, according to comScore, an Internet tracking firm. That was roughly 6 billion more videos than Internet users watched during February 2007. As video content owners continue to seek and develop distribution out...

Nintendo Ordered to Pay $21 Million Over Controller Patent
2008-05-15 22:17:00 According to Game Daily, Anascape, a company based in Tyler, Texas was awarded $21 million from a jury over its game controller patents. Nintendo of America was ordered to pay $21 million to Anascape Ltd. for violating its patents. A jury found that Nintendo infringed on the East Texas company's patents while designing the Wii Classic, WaveBird and GameCube controllers. The lawsuit from Anascape was originally filed back in 2006. Nintendo spokesman Charlie Scibetta said the company would appeal the decision to "significantly" reduce the award. He added that Nintendo was pleased that no infringement was found with the motion-sensing technology used in the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers. Anascape also sued Microsoft for similar game controller patent infringements. The two companies reached a settlement prior to the start of legal proceedings. Microsoft added that the terms of the settlement reached were confidential.

Xbox 360 hits 10 million sold in U.S.
2008-05-14 23:25:00 CNET is reporting that Microsoft has sold 10 million XBOX 360 units in the U.S.Microsoft said on Wednesday that its Xbox 360 has become the first next-generation video game console to hit 10 million units sold in the United States. Further, said Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, that milestone has historically been reached by the eventual best-seller of each previous console generation, a fact that Microsoft will certainly be using to bolster suggestions that the Xbox 360 will eventually prevail sales-wise over Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3. Of course, Sony has been the winner of the two previous generations, with the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 far outselling the competition. In the U.S., according to NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier--as of the end of March, Microsoft's rivals, Nintendo, and Sony had sold 8.8 million Wiis and 4.1 million PlayStation 3's in the United States, respectively. For the full story, click here!

Mac Office sales soar on Apple's gains
2008-05-13 13:43:00 According to CNET, Microsoft should be happy that the Mac version of Office is flying off the shelves! While Apple's market share gains are cause for consternation for many in Redmond, one unit is clearly benefiting. The company wouldn't disclose sales numbers, but said the sales are the highest in the 19-year history of the unit. That continues a trend that has been going on for some time. Senior marketing manager Amanda Lefebvre declined to give all of the credit to Apple, but said of the increased number of Macs, "Of course that's one of the components that is helping us." The company also said it was ready with the first "service pack" update for Mac Office 2008, adding things like reliability and performance tweaks, as well as some changes aimed at boosting security. The issue was noted late last week on Microsoft forums and by others, including ZDNet's mary Jo Foley. Those with a problem are encouraged to contact Microsoft's customer support. Online retailer EBay's new PayPal rule in Australia draws fire
2008-05-10 16:15:00 Sympatico Tech News is reporting that eBay is looking into whether or not to require users to use their PayPal service to pay for winning bids. After repeated queries, the online auction company said late Friday it will not institute such a rule in the United States. But it remains unclear whether EBay will still try it in other countries. EBay often tests big changes in smaller markets before expanding them worldwide, and says it is open to that in this case."We are going to take learnings from it and apply them accordingly," said EBay spokesman Usher Lieberman.EBay says it wants to reduce disputes and restore trust in its marketplace with the PayPal-only plan. Because EBay and PayPal can share information on each transaction, EBay says use of PayPal allows it to stop fraud more efficiently than outside payment services. Pressing that safety argument in a heated discussion with Australian users, an EBay executive compared the new rule to banning the sale of heroin on street corners....

2008-05-10 15:59:00 Sympatico Tech News is reporting that Canadian 1st and 2nd generation iPod owners might be eligible for a $45 refund from Apple Canada. The company has offered the credit to people who bought a first-, second- or third-generation iPod before June 24, 2004, as a settlement to the two lawsuits, filed in Montreal and Toronto. The settlement said Apple had misrepresented the battery life of the devices. The plaintiffs, Ines Lenzi of Montreal and Bradley Waddell of Toronto, said the iPod's rechargeable batteries only supplied three hours of power rather than the eight hours advertised. The Quebec Superior Court in 2006 rejected Lenzi's request to certify the lawsuit as a class-action, but the Ontario Superior Court later accepted a similar request from Waddell. The settlement must be finalized in court in Montreal on May 26 and in Toronto on June 20. Apple has also offered to pay almost $100,000 legal fees and denies any wrongdoing.Up to 80,000 Canadians could be eligible for the refund,...

Trojan-Infected MP3s Have PC Users Singing the Blues
2008-05-09 14:02:00 There's a great story to make everyone aware over at Tech News World about fake MP3 files installing trojans on your PC's, so be aware!!!A new type of Trojan horse malware application is hiding inside fake MP3 media files, infecting approximately 500,000 consumer PCs, McAfee Avert Labs reported. The nefarious files have been delivered primarily on peer-to-peer networks during the last several days. The trojan, known as "Downloader-UA.h," was added to McAfee's DAT files about a week ago. Since then, McAfee VirusScan Online users have reported the half-million detections. The trojan hides in fake music and video files and is associated with fastmp3player.com. "When a user attempts to load one of these MP3 and MPG files, they don't get the music/video they were hoping for; instead, they're directed to download a file named 'PLAY_MP3.exe,'" reports Craig Schmugar, a researcher for McAfee Avert Labs, on the Avert Labs blog. Comcast said to be mulling monthly download limits
2008-05-08 13:28:00 Sympatico Tech News is reporting that Comcast, the U.S's largest ISP is thinking about capping usage for their users. The consumer broadband website DSLReports.com, citing an unnamed source at Comcast, said Tuesday the company was considering a cap of 250 gigabytes per month cap.The source said users would get one free "slip-up" in a 12-month period, after which they would pay a $15 charge for every 10 GB over the cap they used. The proposed plan would mark a departure for U.S. internet service providers, which have traditionally offered "unlimited" download plans to subscribers. But the proposed cap is still significantly more than most Canadian internet customers can currently access. Most Canadian ISPs, including the two biggest - Rogers Communications Inc. and Bell Canada Inc. - already have data caps for users much lower than the one Comcast is reportedly mulling. The most popular plans for both Bell and Rogers cap monthly data at 60 GB. Microsoft denies adding copyright scanner to Zune
2008-05-08 13:23:00 The New York Times has an interesting story about how Microsoft might be including a "copyright scanner" in their Zune product to check to make sure all your music is legit! If you like to download the latest episodes of “Heroes” or other NBC shows from BitTorrent, maybe you shouldn’t buy a Microsoft Zune to watch them on. A future update of the software for Microsoft’s portable media player may well include a feature that will block unauthorized copies of copyrighted videos from being played on it. These include programs from NBC Universal, which has pulled its shows off Apple’s iTunes Store. Late Tuesday afternoon I reached J. B. Microsoft resumes XP, Vista updates
2008-05-07 13:43:00 CNET is reporting that Microsoft has resumed updates for Windows XP and Vista.A week ago, Microsoft delayed the release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 because of a problem that could lead to data loss when running the XP update in conjunction with its Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System program. It also halted automatic updates to Windows Vista Service Pack 1 because of a similar issue. The software maker on Tuesday said it is releasing XP Service Pack 3 for Web downloads, and resuming automatic updates to Vista Service Pack 1, after developing a filter that will prevent machines running Dynamics RMS from getting either update. The filter is not a fix for the incompatibility, though Microsoft said it is working on that as well. "A fix for this issue is currently in testing at Microsoft and with customers, and we hope to make it publicly available this month," the company said in a statement. "Until then, Microsoft is advising Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install e...

Praising Those Who Risk Their Lives To Inform Us

Microsoft withdraws offer to buy Yahoo
2008-05-05 14:08:00 According to Sympatico Tech News, Microsoft has withdrawn its bid for Yahoo. In a letter sent to Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said the software maker was willing to pay $47.5 billion US - or $33 US per share - for Yahoo. Yahoo wanted $37 US a share."Despite our best efforts, including raising our bid by roughly $5 billion [US], Yahoo! has not moved toward accepting our offer," Ballmer said in a statement."After careful consideration, we believe the economics demanded by Yahoo! do not make sense for us, and it is in the best interests of Microsoft stockholders, employees and other stakeholders to withdraw our proposal."Microsoft's original offer was $44.6 billion US, or $31 US per share.Yang released a statement late Saturday saying Microsoft's offer was too low and that the company was pleased so many of its shareholders agreed with its determination."With the distraction of Microsoft's unsolicited proposal now behind us, we will be able to ...

Higher Offer by Microsoft Brings Yahoo to Table
2008-05-04 15:15:00 The NY Times is reporting that the never ending takeover battle for Yahoo is heating up again, with Microsoft stepping up their bid for the famous search engine. After a three-month standoff, Microsoft was in active merger talks withYahoo on Friday, several people involved in the discussions said.Microsoft, which had threatened to abandon its bid or initiate an attempt to oust Yahoo’s board, has increased its offer “by several dollars,” one of the people said. But a deal was still far from certain. A person involved in the discussions said the chances of a friendly deal being reached were “still no better than 50-50.” The talks were an effort by Microsoft to reach a negotiated agreement and avert the collapse of a blockbuster deal that could reshape competition on the Internet and give Microsoft more heft in its intensifying rivalry with Google. The discussions represent a breakthrough after weeks of behind-the-scenes maneuvering on both sides. The higher bid came as Yahoo’s board wa...
