Everybody wants it, everybody says they do it, but what is Information architecture?
The Information Architecture Pyramid
2007-11-07 13:00:00
My friend Susan Reetz asked about her site keywording. She had her site analyzed at the “Extreme Makeover: Website Edition” session at the MCA-I ProTrack conference in September and the presenter (Susan Price from MediaRich) noticed that her site pages had no keyword or other meta tagging. My friend’s web guy said “Oh, don’t bother ...
Some Information Architecture links
2007-09-11 19:44:00
I pulled this collection of links together a while back as the research basis for a post that would have been titled “Information Architecture in the Rich Web Era”. I still haven’t written that post, but rather than let these great IA links rot in my drafts, I figured I would release them into the ...
How I use Information Architecture
2007-09-05 16:15:00
Information Architecture is the most important practice in web development to the management of a project. IA is the art of creating and managing the documentation that describes the project. Creating that documentation also means creating the site itself, which ties into the strategy used to accomplish the goals for which the project is slated ...

The phrase information architecture (although it is, I suppose, what I do) always conjures up an image of information architecture as building materials that need to be assembled properly in order to function. Perhaps this is a good analogy — and perhaps it’s not. In some sense, information is a bunch of building blocks we can assemble and tear down as we need to. But we can also recombine it many ways that we wouldn’t normally think of when it comes to bricks, wood and steel. When we talk about information architecture, there’s often an argument either for user-level tagging (which is so often, and so unfortunately, called folksonomy) and a rigid, centrally-controlled hierarchy of terms (taxonomy). The arguments on both sides hinge around how much control you should give end users over how their information is organized (since they’re usually the ones creating most of this stuff). Some would say that increased control by the end user is an inevitable r...
