Lack Of Strength = More Injuries
2008-05-08 21:48:00 Anyone who has ever been an athlete (or even just a casual game-player) knows that to avoid injury you need to increase your strength. The stronger you are, the less likely you'll be to get hurt. I learned the hard way that bicycle racing had created a major discrepancy between my quad and hamstring muscles when I dislocated my knee in April 2007. One of the main reasons I got hurt was because the front of my leg was much stronger than the back, creating an imbalance that ended with me in surgery and then on crutches for a month. Live and learn, I suppose. Another real-world example of the importance of strength training: the Colorado Avalanche. I linked to it in the previous entry about Coach Q, but Adrian Dater's recent blog post (in which he joins the chorus of "nays" on Q's future with the team) was full of interesting tidbits. In response to a reader's comment that the team's entire training staff should be fired: About the training staf...

Injuries and lineup changes
2008-05-06 02:27:00 BY ADAM RONIS Good new for B.J. Ryan owners. The Blue Jays said he is now available to pitch on consecutive days, but he won't pitch more than one inning. He has been good so far. The Brewers said Eric Gagne is still the closer despite him being very inconsistent and blowing five saves. There's no obvious alternative on the staff. Guillermo Mota is walking too many batters, Salomon Torres pitches better as a setup man, Derrick Turnbow was released and David Riske hasn't pitched well. Nick Swisher has struggled mightily for the White Sox. He was moved from the leadoff spot to No. 6 in the order tonight. Swisher entered in a 8-for-55 (.145) slump. He is hitting .210 with three homers and eight RBIs. Carlos Quentin was moved to the No. 2 spot and Orlando Cabrera is leading off. The Tigers also shuffled their lineup tonight. Gary Sheffield was moved to sixth, Carlos Guillen is batting third and Ivan Rodriguez is batting ninth. Jimmy Rollins started his rehab today and went 4-for-4 wi...

What a bunch of divers. The audio of the show should be posted before long here. Hat tip to Dario over at ITCS. UPDATE: Dater confirms the damage, including the status of Paul Stastny---he tore his MCL and would have missed four weeks if the season was still going on. Luckily he'll have the off-season to recover fully.

How much are my injuries worth?
2008-04-24 16:53:00 How much are my injuries worth? A question worth asking when you are venturing in settling your personal injury claims. To answer the question in a snap could be illusory, much more impractical. Asking the question in blunt can be likened to asking a real estate agent what a house is worth when you have not seen the subject property yet. It could be an exercise in futility.

When mandates are repealed, deaths and injuries increase.
2008-04-01 16:31:00 If you ride a motorcycle, you're 37 times more likely to die in a crash than someone in a passenger car. Motorcycle deaths have more than doubled in the past 10 years, and motorcycle accidents kill more Americans each year than all the nation's much higher-profile plane crashes, ship disasters, pipeline explosions and railway accidents combined. But motorcycles are economical, popular and — as many people who've been on them will testify — seductively fun to ride. So how do you reduce their toll without severely restricting their use? There's one proven method that the nation, regrettably, has moved away from. For years, the federal government withheld highway money from states that didn't require motorcyclists to wear helmets. Study after study has shown that helmets save lives: A University of Southern California analysis showed that helmets were the single most important factor in surviving motorcycle accidents. The National Highway Traffic ...
