Injuries are Just Part of the "Fun" of Dance
2009-11-18 01:53:00 "Dancing is fun...it's so great that you get to dance for a living...what a fun and great way to live!" Yes, you are certainly right, but that's not the whole story. Let's just put it this way, it's what most consider a "fun" job with (as of last Friday) a side of a torn tendon right off my 4th finger! "Oops" I just ripped the tendon off my finger and now "ouch" it really hurts....
Traumatic Brain Injuries : The Smoldering Issue Inside Hockey, Part 2
2009-11-01 16:15:00 This morning I woke up thinking about a conversation I had with Don Granato last summer on the subject of chin straps and head injuries. He spoke to me about sitting at his brothers Tony's bed side nursing him through a serious head injury and his long recovery. Fortunately Tony Granato made a full recovery and is now the assistant head coach for the National Hockey Leagues Pittsburgh Penguins. Again, it illustrated to me that head injuries serious and cumulative, are an issue in this sport and need to be addressed. Everywhere people have heard of "Shaken Baby Syndrome" it is a deadly form of child abuse where an infant or small child's brain is bruised beyond repair by simply...
Traumatic Brain Injuries, the Smoldering Issue Within Hockey
2009-11-01 00:31:00 Yes. it has happened again, another family is sitting vigil in a hospital room with an injured athlete fighting for his life and future. Kirchner Ranger Ben Fenelli was injured in an on ice boarding incident which caused his helmet to fly off upon contact with the glass. Again it calls attention to a smoldering fire within hockey that of helmets, concussions, head injuries and safety equipment. The young men and women that play this sport of fire and ice pay a high price for its power and speed that we all know and love. Although for much of my day I look at the world through a Canon lens, I also have another another working life that of a...
Another day more injuries...
2009-09-14 18:40:00 In the first inning of yesterdays day game, it was observed the Ken Takahashi was warming up in the bullpen. Whether is was a side session or he was attempting to gauge an injury is unknown but Taki never came into the game and it was later revealed that he was unavailable ( source Daily News). Although, he's been surprisingly effective the 40 y/o can't be our second lefty, the Mets need to be younger and less injury prone...In the second game, Fernando Tatis left the game with a sprained finger attempting to catch a ball while crashing into the left field wall (source Metsblog). I have to agree with Matt on this one, Tatis should have no future with team and the ABs he's taking should be given to players who will be here next year; Nick Evans, Dan Murphy, Cory Sullivan, Jeremy Reed and Angel Pagan. Luis Castillo was beamed in the arm with an errant pitch by Pedro Martinez and went down in obvious pain. Castillo would stay in the game but wore protection on the arm.

Man Sues RiNo nightclub for Injuries by Bouncer
2009-08-28 00:16:00 A man is suing RiNo nightclub for injuries he says he sustained at the hands of one of RiNo's bouncers. According to the complaint, on December 20, 2008, plaintiff Sean Regan was in the VIP area of RiNo nightclub when he "inadvertently dropped a drink on the floor" and was asked to leave by an unknown bouncer. When Regan asked to speak to the manager, the complaint states, the unknown bouncer angrily denied his request, led him down a dark hallway with another unknown bouncer, shoved him, twisted his arms behind his back and "spun him around violently at which time [plaintiff's] left thumb hooked into the unknown bouncer's jacket pocket, resulting in a fracture to [plaintiff's] left hand." Top Ten Most Damaging Cubs Injuries in 2009
2009-08-24 13:00:00 While we watch as the Cubs season sinks further and further into oblivion, it's time to start examining where and when the wheels started falling off this crazy train. But you don't have look very far when you consider the litany of injuries this team has suffered since Opening Day. There were actually more than ten to choose from today, further evidence of how bad it's been for the Cubs. 10. Lou PiniellaSenility may not necessarily be an injury, but the North Side skipper is throwing up his hands in frustration more often than finding a cure for what ails his fragile team....
MMA Injury: IT Band Injuries are Sneaky
2009-08-23 15:45:00 Most mixed martial arts fighters that I have met regularly train explosive kicking and sprawling drills. The nature of this type of training combined with boxing, grappling, running and some form of plyometrics, places tremendous strain on the hamstrings, adductors (inner thighs), gluts (outer hip) and the IT band. To avoid tightness and stiffness in these areas most fighters part-take in the conventional stretches: straight leg hamstring stretch on the back, figure four stretch on the back, American splits and center splits. However, these stretches do not address the tightening that occurs in the IT Band. In fact, most fighters are not even aware of the IT band and the value of lengthening it on a regular basis. The best...
Man Sues Salvation Army for injuries sustained at West 63rd Street location
2009-08-21 00:26:00 A Chicago man is suing the Salvation Army for injuries he alleges he sustained at the West 63rd Street location in Chicago. In a complaint filed today in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Anthony Herron describes himself as "a beneficiary in a charitable program conducted by the Defendant," and while performing activities consistent with that program, "wood boards fell on top of him." Herron asserts that the Salvation Army, among other things, "failed to properly place and organize the wood boards," which caused him to fall to the ground and land on a hand jack, sustaining injury. Pet-induced falling injuries
2009-03-30 16:44:00 A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that an average of more than 86,000 people are seen by hospital emergency departments every year because they trip and fall over their pets or their pets' paraphernalia. This accounts for approximately 240 visits per day, but only 1 percent of the total trip-and-fall injuries. Most of the injuries occur at home, and children and seniors were more commonly injured. The vast majority of these injuries are preventable through common sense pet ownership. The following are some recommendations for pet owners from the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. Vigilance is the best way to avoid trips and falls. Be aware of your pet's location relative to your own when you are moving around. Make sure walking areas are sufficiently lit so you can see your pet (or other obstacles in your path.). Night lights are helpful. If pets tend to congregate around you...

Can You Ever Prevent Mountain Biking Injuries?
2008-05-25 14:08:00 As mountain biking becomes ever more popular, the number of mountain biking injuries has steadily increased. It all depends upon which type of mountain biking you take part in as to how dangerous it could be. If you take part in downhill mountain biking then obviously it will be potentially more dangerous than ordinary trail mountain biking. However, no matter which type of biking you do there are certain measures which you can take to prevent injuries from occurring. You just have to make yourself more knowledgeable about the sport. How to Prevent InjuriesThe main way to prevent mountain biking injuries is to ensure that you use the right equipment. If you are just entering into the sport then you should ideally look into the different equipment that you need. One of the most obvious pieces of safety equipment used in mountain biking is the helmet. This is needed no matter which type of biking you take part in. Anything could happen and on mountain biking trails the terrain is usuall...

Lack Of Strength = More Injuries
2008-05-08 21:48:00 Anyone who has ever been an athlete (or even just a casual game-player) knows that to avoid injury you need to increase your strength. The stronger you are, the less likely you'll be to get hurt. I learned the hard way that bicycle racing had created a major discrepancy between my quad and hamstring muscles when I dislocated my knee in April 2007. One of the main reasons I got hurt was because the front of my leg was much stronger than the back, creating an imbalance that ended with me in surgery and then on crutches for a month. Live and learn, I suppose. Another real-world example of the importance of strength training: the Colorado Avalanche. I linked to it in the previous entry about Coach Q, but Adrian Dater's recent blog post (in which he joins the chorus of "nays" on Q's future with the team) was full of interesting tidbits. In response to a reader's comment that the team's entire training staff should be fired: About the training staf...
