Has The Injury Bug Knocked The Tigers And Indians Out Of Contention?
2008-06-07 18:05:00 Frustration continues to mount as both the Indians and Tigers have lost a key starter to injury this week. Jeremy Bonderman is out with a blood clot, and Jake Westbrook will undergo Tommy John surgery; both pitchers are likely out for the season. Since these two teams where once considered favorites to contend for the AL Central crown, it seems highly in plausible that they would forfeit the season in early June. So, dear readers, what options do these two teams have? Do they trade for pitching and hope their offenses carry them through? Do they try to spark their offense via free agency? Do they give up and hope for a better 2009? For one, as an AL exec told Jason Stark, the Tigers seem to be out of prospects good enough to trade for big league talent. And the Indians pitching has been good enough, but it's been their inconsistent offense (with a punch-less Travis Hafner in particular) that has them six games out of first. Arguably, the Indians seem to be the team with the b...

A BRAWL, AN INJURY, A MANNY/YOUK FIGHT, A SWEEP...Red Sox 7 Rays 1
2008-06-06 11:47:00 Oh, what an eventful night at Fenway Park in Boston Thursday night. The bad blood between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox spilled over into a violent confrontation between the two rivals near the beginning of what would be a Red Sox victory and sweep. Coco Crisp was hit by Rays pitcher James Shields, who is a complete a**hole, and he promptly charged the mound, setting off an ugly brawl in which somebody could have gotten really hurt. Shields said he was just protecting his team by hitting Coco in the leg, an obvious retaliation from the night before. Crisp had this to say..."People were scratching like we're little girls, trying to scratch out my eyes," said Crisp, sporting several scratches around his eyes. "People were trying to pull my hair like little girls instead of punches. The fight is pretty much over, baseballwise. You want to come in late and get your little blows in, that's cool. It's all good, try to pull some hair."I'm not angry at anybody. There were so...

Will Ortiz Injury Lead To Acquisition?
2008-06-03 01:21:00 11:21pm: Terry Francona says surgery for Ortiz is "very unlikely." 9:28pm: Bad news for the Red Sox - DH David Ortiz will miss a significant chunk of the season with his wrist injury. There's even a chance Ortiz could need season-ending surgery. An open DH spot in Boston is sure to light up the rumor mill. Keep in mind, though, that the Sox could fill the vacancy internally. For example, Manny Ramirez could DH and Brandon Moss could play left. Plenty of bats are out there if Theo Epstein does look for outside help. The following players may be available: Barry Bonds, Adam Dunn, Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, Brian Giles, Raul Ibanez, and Milton Bradley.

Injury rules Babel out of Euros
2008-05-31 18:03:00 The loss of Babel is a big blow for The Netherlands Netherlands winger Ryan Babel will play no part in the Euro 2008 championship after he tore ankle ligaments in training on Saturday. The 21-year-old Liverpool star had been expected to play some part of the team's final warm-up match against Wales in Rotterdam on Sunday. And he was set to be a key part of Marco van Basten's squad for the tournament in Austria and Switzerland. Van Basten is believed to be already discussing a replacement for Babel. The Netherlands are in Group C along with France, Italy and Romania for Euro 2008, which kicks off on 7 June. Van Basten also has a concern over the fitness of Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, who has been on the sidelines since joining the squad last week. However, Van Persie is optimistic about making his side's opener against world champions Italy on 9 June. "I am in the final phase of my recovery. I feel fit," Van Per...
Jason Campbell injury update
2008-05-30 22:59:00 Matt Mosley at his Hashmarks blog had an NFC sized injury update today with the good (or bad) word on Jason Campbell. As reader(s) are well aware, Campbell injured his hammy earlier this offseason. It went something like this: Next step: Zorn has Campbell working hard to bend his knees and stay low while dropping back. It's still a bit awkward for Campbell and might have led to the hamstring pull. Campbell will be the unquestioned starter, but he might not have much margin for error following Todd Collins' impressive performance last season. Interesting note on that last bit. I was impressed with the manner Collins came in and owned the offense last season though attributed much of that success to his familiarity with a system. I am not trying to take anything away from Todd, but I wonder if lightning will strike twice under a new coaching staff and playbook that he hasn't worn as a second skin for years. I also look at our earlier schedule -- especially the fact that three of ...

Quick Ronnie Brown injury update
2008-05-29 21:40:00 Over at the Hashmarks blog, they talk a little bit about the injuries of each team as we inch closer to training camp. Here's what they say about our very own Ronnie Brown: Rehab status: Brown underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior-cruciate ligament on Nov. 1. He is carrying the ball and changing direction effectively during the Dolphins' ongoing practices. The team is taking precautions to protect Brown from unnecessary contact. Next step: The Dolphins expect Brown to be ready for training camp. They are encouraged by his progress so far, but it's still early. Only seven months have passed since Brown underwent surgery. This basically gels with everything else we've been hearing. I guess it's good news that Ronnie hasn't suffered any setbacks yet now that he is cutting and changing direction in non-contact drills. But like Mike Sando writes in the blog, it's still early. The real test will be how he holds up in contact drills and, more importan...

Sharon Stone: karma comment adds insult to injury
2008-05-29 05:01:00 From the safety of the red carpet in Cannes, Sharon Stone made an unfortunate comment about the earthquake in China:"I am not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans ... then this earthquake and all this stuff happened and I thought, 'Is that karma, when you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?'"The earthquake centered near China's Sichuan Province has taken the lives of 70,000 people. Karma is about cause and effect. Neither the actions nor the personal opinions of the majority of those who died so cruelly at the hands of nature contributed directly to official Chinese policy toward Tibet.Thousands were killed when the earthquake struck, others were entombed in the debris. Small children were trapped in the rubble, condemned to a slow, lingering death. In the face of such a monumental human tragedy even if the word "karma" flickers across the screen of your consciousness, out of respect for the death of thousands of innocents, you keep it to yourself...

Injury news
2008-05-29 04:25:00 BY ADAM RONIS Rays closer Troy Percival pulled himself from the field in the ninth inning today after injuring his hamstring. He felt pain in his left hamstring and fell while throwing a warmup pitch. He will have an MRI and a DL-stint looks like a strong possibility. Percival, 38, felt tightness in his hamstring on May 20 and rested for a few days. He pitched Sunday and had no issues. Dan Wheeler picked up the save today and is the favorite to get the job should Percival be out. Al Reyes might get a look, too. Dice-K will return to Boston to have an MRI on his right shoulder. He left Tuesday's game with a fatigued shoulder. The Yankees placed Ian Kennedy on the 15-day DL with a strained right lat. That could push Joba Chamberlain to the starting rotation quicker than anticipated. The Blue Jays placed catcher Gregg Zaun on the 15-day DL with an elbow strain. Rob Barajas will take his place. The Braves activated Rafael Soriano from the 15-day DL. He should be the closer until John S...
