2008-05-13 22:30:00 Eighty-eight days before the opening ceremony of the Olympics XXIV (on 8 August 2008) Nike filled a warehouse space in Beijing's up and coming 798 Arts District with their 100 most innovative accomplishments and I was fortunate enough to be one of the first to see it. A gallery-like exhibit providing insight into the inspiration behind some of the game-changing footwear and apparel, it's a clear reminder why Nike is truly one of the best at harnessing design to improve athlete performance. The space itself is built to look like stacks of iconic orange Nike shoe boxes, some holding original prototypes and signature models. Highlights include Michael Johnson's original gold track shoes, a prototype of Ronaldo's Mercurial Vapor and various Tinker Hatfield prototypes that rarely see the light of day. Upon entering the space, visitors are greeted with an iPod Touch preloaded with 100 tracks highlighting a short explanation for each innovation. Interactive displays, rotating and shif...

Nintendo Wii Remote Innovations: digital whiteboard, touchscreen, head-moun
2008-04-22 10:06:00 For people that follow gadgets, technology or gaming I am sure you have heard the name “Johnny Leeâ€, if you have not then your going to love the video below that shows Johnny Lee demonstrating some innovations that he has created. This man is a genius and people should respect him for what he has done, although that will not be the case for all gamers. Johnny Lee took what we all know as the Nintendo Wii remote with its amazing motion sensor and turned it into a digital whiteboard, touchscreen and head-mounted 3-D viewer. How he did this is shown in the video below, but simply put, he is using the high performing infrared camera that’s on the tip of each controller. Its amazing that for around $5 you can make an infrared pen, combined with a Wii remote makes an interactive whiteboard out of around $50 of hardware. There are limitations making a Multi touch interactive whiteboard like this, but it gets you 80% of the way for 1% of the cost (great for schools on a budget). The s...

Housing Innovations
2008-04-20 03:01:00 More and more I am amazed by the innovations that are being made concerning housing. Just a few years ago, when my mom was still alive and not yet bed ridden, there weren’t nearly as many innovations for disabled people. When my mom passed away in 2005, the only places I knew of that had walk in tubs were nursing homes. The general public didn’t have that option. Now private citizens can have one and keep their independence while still taking baths by themselves. I’ve seen newer and better wheelchair ramps built onto houses, and I’ve even seen homes that have had previous ramps removed and look like the ramps were never there. I honestly wish a lot of those things had been around when my mom was still alive. Her quality of life once she’d become disabled would have been so much better. Great post about Blizzard innovations
2008-04-07 17:17:00 Blizzard Entertainment, the envy of the computer game industry, has learned 11 lessons on innovation that can help almost any business.Irvine-based Blizzard used these innovation methods not only to create the world’s most popular massively multi-player online game, World of Warcraft, but also to keep the game fresh and challenging for more than 10 million players.Because many of those customers pay $15 a month to continue playing, Blizzard’s ongoing creative achievement is worth more than $1 billion a year in revenues, not counting the multi-millions it tallies from its other games, such as StarCraft, Diablo II and Warcraft III, plus trading cards, comic books, etc. This combination of creativity and profitability is much of the reason for the upcoming merger of game company Activision with Blizzard’s parent company, Vivendi Games. The new company, to be called Activision Blizzard, will be valued at about $18.9 billion. (link)

UGC GIVES NO MARKS FOR INNOVATIONS
2008-03-09 11:13:00 When in doubt, set up a committee to prepare an action plan. This is the way our education establishment works and the University Grants Commission (UGC) is no exception. It has been directed by the HRD Ministry to work out; you guessed it, an action plan on the modalities of establishing 16 new varsities and 370 new colleges in backward blocks. The UGC, it would appear, has suddenly woken up to the fact that universities with 500-600 affiliated colleges are facing difficulties in monitoring quality. Like delimitation, the UGC also wants to carve out smaller universities from existing ones. Nothing wrong with all this; we do need more central universities and colleges. But will this really solve the problems in the higher education sector? Going by past experience, the answer would be no. The 11th Five Year Plan is to increase - outlay in higher and technical education ten times, an amount of Rs 84,743 crore. This is a positive step and could, if utilised effectively...
