Abridged Future Inquirer Columnists, May 2009
2009-05-19 21:25:00 (I also posted here, and I ended up putting this out there "after hours" in case anyone missed it.)Well, it figures that The Sturdy Beggars would kick off the speculation as to who would end up as the next monthly columnist of the Philadelphia Inquirer here (with Brendan Calling following up here ? hat tips for both to Atrios). So I guess I?d better get my nominations in pronto.I know D-Mac shut down his site a couple of months ago; he used to do this for the Daily News, but I think it fits here also. What follows are my list of candidates and their choice of topics?Thomas Capano (in his words) ? Hey, this says that we may have had a hand in the death of Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, somebody we tortured to manufacture a link to Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda as an excuse for the Iraq war. Why didn?t we just stuff him in a water cooler and shoot a couple of holes in it instead (here)? That would have worked just as well, if only Gerry had shut his mouth and Debbie had decided to have a memory...

Graphzilla prepping early G200 launch - The INQUIRER
2008-04-26 15:52:00 Graphzilla prepping early G200 launch - The INQUIRER: "THE GREEN TEAM is moving up its launch of the GeForce 9900 series to July in a bid to counter DAAMIT's launch of RV770, according to our old friend Internet Reports. The bods at VR-Zone offer no hard info for their claims beyond the usual sources, but it doesn't seem like an improbable move. If AMD actually gets its act together and RV770 - the Radeon 4800 series - actually turns out to be a performance crown-winner, Nvidia won't want to let that stand for very long. The 9900GT was previously speculated to be the first card out of the bag, given the stunning sales and benchmark performance of the 8800GT, but it may now be that all chips are being stuck into GTX and GTS cards to make sure that Nvidia stays top dog in the face of new competition."

ATI cuts prices on the 3850 and 3870 - The INQUIRER
2008-03-22 15:17:00 ATI cuts prices on the 3850 and 3870 - The INQUIRER: "ATI IS GOING TO drop prices on the 3850 and 3870 in the next day or two. This is not a short term thing, it is a permanent cut.The price on the 3850/512 is going to sink to $145 or below, and the 3870/512 should hit $159 or less. At that money, many may ask, why bother with the 3850?In any case, these are screamingly good deals. You can buy three 3870s for the price of a 3870X2, or three and a mobo for less than a GX2. Not bad."

NV 790i pricing leaves plenty of margin - The INQUIRER
2008-03-22 15:16:00 NV 790i pricing leaves plenty of margin - The INQUIRER: "ONE OF THE things that does not get out all that often is OEM pricing. With the recent launch of the NV 790i board, the high-end of the market went from $250 to $350. Where did that money go?Well, OEMs tell us that the money basically went into NV's bottom line. The cost to the OEMs on the 790i chipset is $110, a huge premium over the older chipsets. For comparison Intel, a company that never prices low, charges $70 for its X48.A good rule of thumb is that supplier cost ends up translating into about double the price they pay by the time you hand over your credit card. If mobo maker X adds a $5 heatsink to board Y, the price you pay for Y ends up being $10 more.Given this, the $40+ price gouge for the 790i will end up ramping board prices by $80, or most of the $100 increase. If you look at the functional differences between the X48 and 790i, there is precious little to justify the more than 50 per cent price increase, especi...

Map your keyboard to your brain - The INQUIRER
2008-03-05 13:34:00 Map your keyboard to your brain - The INQUIRER: "N ONE OF THOSE moments where life imitates sci-fi, OCZ Technology has announced their Neural Impulse Actuator has gone into mass production. Now, what the heck is a Neural Impulse Actuator – or NIA - you ask?The device, a strap-on headband plugged to your PC via USB 2.0, reads your mind and turns whatever you’re thinking into reality. Or not. What it actually does is read electrical signals from your brain through 3 carbon sensors, and with a little getting-used-to, turns them into in-game actions - literally mapping your keyboard to your brain’s reactions. This works akin to an EEG readout, with specific signals corresponding to keystrokes on your keyboard. There’s a learning curve, as some have put it, but it’s only a matter of practice."

IE8 will now conform to standards - The INQUIRER
2008-03-05 13:28:00 IE8 will now conform to standards - The INQUIRER: "AFTER MUCH grumbling by developers and users, the vole has abruptly volete faced on its strange IE8 decision to make web pages opt in to conforming behaviour, now deciding that it would in fact be a better idea to have the new browser render in full standards mode by default. This means that the new browser now passes the Acid-2-rendering test. The Vole had originally intended to make the super-standards mode an opt-in choice with IE 7 'standards' mode the default, which, the Vole reckoned, would assure improved backwards-compatibility with current Web sites and applications. Now though, IE8 will have three rendering modes: the new standards-compliant mode, the IE7 rendering engine and an option for displaying older Web sites. Sites that want IE8 to use its IE7 engine will have to add a tag to their code."

Nvidia 9800GX2 clocks revealed - The INQUIRER
2008-03-03 13:32:00 Nvidia 9800GX2 clocks revealed - The INQUIRER: "WE JUST GOT hard measured numbers on the Nvidia 9800GX2. There has been a lot of speculation on clocks and speeds, so here is what the one we have access to did.The stock speeds will be 600/1000/1500MHz for core, memory and pixel shaders, but they OC a bit beyond that. With the broken OS, 64-bit edition, and an Intel quad, they score 14,4xx in 3DMark06 at default settings. You can crank up the core frequency, but at least on the ones we have access too, memory goes all of a pittance higher, and shaders don't budge at all. If you push it as hard as you can go, you can just break 16K on 3DMark06."

It will be pin compatible with Tigerton.Nehalem is projected as arriving late, supporting two, four and eight cores, representing four, eight and 16 threads."

9600GT recalled, 9800X2 delayed - The INQUIRER
2008-02-19 09:43:00 9600GT recalled, 9800X2 delayed - The INQUIRER: "IT LOOKS LIKE Nvidia is firing on no cylinders lately. The firm can't seem to get a product out on time. There is one bright spot: the count on the 9600GT delays has gone up by 50 per cent. That may not be a bright spot, but the so far twice delayed 9600GT, (specs here) appears to have been recalled. Some OEMs are getting the call to yank them, others not yet, or not at the time they talked to us. What this means is more and more delay, this time we are not sure how much though. An educated guess would be CeBIT, because what else are they going to launch there?Oh yes, we probably should mention that the 9800X2, or whatever they call it, has also moved from CeBIT to the end of March, for now. Before you get all hot and bothered, this is basically a couple of downclocked G92s on 2 PCBs.It will be decently fast, but it will also be expensive. The cheapest we can find a G92 based GT with 512MB memory is about $210, and a GTS for about $26...

Philadelphia Inquirer Editor Gushes over Bush, Columnist Panders to Anti-Im
2007-12-12 23:01:00 by Walter C. Uhler Liberal critics of the Philadelphia Inquirer have watched in amazement while the newspaper's management outsourced much its international and national news gathering responsibilities and promoted the famously incompetent conservative ideologue, Kevin Ferris, to the post of Editor of the Commentary Page. And when we thought things couldn't get much worse, the paper added Rick Santorum - yes, THAT Rick Santorum - to a bullpen of columnists already overstaffed with right-wing warmongers, who had gotten it so wrong on Iraq. Representative of this sorry situation is the latest piece of claptrap written by Ferris: "An Iraq campaign for hope." There, he gushes like a child and waxes euphoric about the "passion and enthusiasm" of President Bush - as if Bush has ever been anything but passionate and enthusiastic, even as he has subjected the United States and the world to the most evil and error prone presidency in U.S. history. AMD prepares DX10.1 part for AGP computers - The INQUIRER
2007-11-07 16:49:00 AMD prepares DX10.1 part for AGP computers - The INQUIRER: "THE REMAINING AGP UPGRADE market will be all AMD's, it seems. After HIS launched 2400 and 2600 parts for the AGP 4x/8x interface, we were set for a swan-song for the connector which has hosted our graphics cards in one form or another since 1997. But AMD has decided to address the needs of this dying market with a DirectX 10.1 part as well. Manufacturers only made the switch to PCI Express this year, with PCI E parts taking over from AGP ones. With Nvidia screwing up the GeForce 8 series (G8x chips cannot work with BR02, Nvidia's own PCIe-2-AGP bridge chip), the market was left open for AMD's X1950 AGP and different models from 2000 series. The 2900XT was just delivered in small volumes to encourage AIB vendors to develop a special PCB with an AGP connector. Also, power consumption was such that you would need two 8-pin connectors in oder to compensate for only 35W delivered by an AGP connector (PCIe 1.0a x16 can deli...

AMD HD3800 pricing shock follows down-clock call - The INQUIRER
2007-11-07 16:47:00 AMD HD3800 pricing shock follows down-clock call - The INQUIRER: "The HD 3850 will exist primarily as a 256MB part, while the 3870 will bring 512MB to the table. Some 3850 parts may come with 512MB and some 3870 parts with 1GB of memory -for 20 and 50 USD/EUR above current asking price. Pricing for both launch parts is very aggressive, and AMD claims it is all due to 55nm process working like a clockwork and achieving excellent yields. Radeon HD 3850 should retail for between $149 to 179 (USD), while 3870 should be between 200 to 230. DAAMIT gets a GT of its own - The INQUIRER
2007-11-07 16:43:00 EAGER TO AVOID being the only major graphics player not to have a successful card with 'GT' as its suffix, it seems that the folks at DAAMIT are preparing a two letter wonder-card of their own - the 2900 GT. Yes, so the Radeon 2900 might have something of a bad name in enthusiast circles, but that hasn't stopped Sapphire attempting to revive its fortunes with a new variant. The memory is a 256bit bus, power is a mere single 8-pin connector, and the core and memory clocks come in at 600/800MHz. Basically, then, the GT is just a SKU made up of failed XTs - with 240 stream processors instead of 320. Unfortunately for ATI fans, we're back to the bad old days of dual-slot coolers with the GT, which appears to use the standard ATI bondoogle. The card appears to be heading squarely for the mid-range buyer with an estimated price tag of around $200. There are more pictures here, should you be so interested.Source: The Inquirer

Moles at our German research division have pointed us to IT4Profit.com, specifically this page, which lists Phenom X4s at $247, $278 and $288 respectively. Add in a little etail markup, and you have something that more or less sits on top of their Intel equivalents. Not good for margins, but better than what they are getting on a mid range X2. "

Nvidia pimps new spin on GTS - The INQUIRER
2007-11-02 16:57:00 Nvidia pimps new spin on GTS - The INQUIRER: "THE 8800 GT is barely out of the gate, but already Nvidia is preparing to send out another mid-range revision into the packed market, this time post-RV670, in a bid to own the popular mainstream in the face of increased competition from ATI. The latest ruse is a new spin of the 8800 GTS, which was practically obsoleted by the new GT's performance. The new GTS, however, will sport 112 shader processing units, as opposed to the 96 in current cards. This will give it a tad more power, and it should leapfrog the 8800 GT again, although this will be dependent on clock configuration, which the green team is happy to let its partners play with. The folks at Hardware Canucks have a card in, and its 640MB performance is nothing to be sniffed at. You can check out the Crysis benchmark here, and wait for the release of the card next month."

Crossfire X to work on Nvidia, Intel and AMD chipsets - The INQUIRER
2007-11-01 16:39:00 Crossfire X to work on Nvidia, Intel and AMD chipsets - The INQUIRER: "THE FIRST TIME Crossfire technology was demonstrated on an Nvidia board was when Rahul Sood talked about VoodooDNA in an Nforce configuration with Diamond Radeon HD2900XT boards in none other than HP's Blackbird 002 machine. And now Diamond Multimedia has expanded these horizons with its entry to the retail/e-tail frame with xDNA technology. We hear that Diamond will make a big announcement at the end of next week, as the company gears up its Radeon products and enables them to work on Intel, AMD and Nvidia chipsets in Crossfire mode. We're not certain how many GPUs will work in fture combinations, but Intel's Bad Axe 2 motherboards with 975X chipset were the first on the market with three PEG connectors (data transfer was dependent on the combination, but you could have x8+x8+x4). This was later followed by numerous motherboards and chipsets - the 680i being the prime example."

Intel QX9650 Yorkfield finally comes out - The INQUIRER
2007-11-01 16:39:00 Intel QX9650 Yorkfield finally comes out - The INQUIRER: "INTEL IS FINALLY unveiling the 45 nm Yorkfield QX9650 Core 2 Extreme part, some seven months after the first salvo of seemingly fully-functional benchmark demo systems flooded the expo halls of Beijing IDF. Why not come out earlier? Well, there was obviously no competition to rush against this year, so they could take some sweet time to fine tune the process. The very first chip is a good test run for tuning its more important 'watershed ' successor on the same process, the Nehalem. And thie ship has seen some serious tuning. The QX9650 part is, by default, a 3GHz FSB1333 - multiplier 9 - part. But few of the 'early adopters' shelling out $1K or so for it will run the CPU at anywhere close that speed. [Image]"

Nvidia nails Crysis demo - The INQUIRER
2007-11-01 16:36:00 Nvidia nails Crysis demo - The INQUIRER: "SO THE CRYSIS DEMO is out and folks are, unsurprisingly, loving it. The full game is out in a couple of weeks, but for now, enthusiastic hardware owners are giving their graphics boards the workout of their poor little lives and running through the short, sweet taste of Crytek's upcoming bonanza. For those who want to learn to tell the difference between the DX0 and DX10 versions of the game, there's a good page with some screenshot comparisons on here. DX10 seems to add some subtle effects to the engine rather than anything outright outrageous, but that's not going to stop Nvidia crowing about it. The green team has put out a new Crysis-optimised driver, version 169.01, which you can get from here. The company promises improved performance for those lucky enough to be spending their week fragging."
