Disarmament Insight: Just popped out ...
2009-10-30 09:51:00
In March 2007, along with Patrick Mc Carthy from the Geneva Forum, I started the Disarmament Insight blog to help communicate the findings of UNIDIR's project on Disarmament as Humanitarian Action: Making Multilateral Negotiations work (DHA). At that time, I think none of us involved envisaged that more than two-and-a-half years later the blog would still be running, or that it would have covered the myriad of subjects it has - from the Conference on Disarmament to the cognitive constraints on negotiators, from export controls to explosive violence, nuclear disarmament to negotiation theory - in hundreds of posts from dozens of contributors. During that time we've witnessed an almost-complete turn-over of core contributors, with Patrick having shifted to UNDP and Maya Brehm on board at UNIDIR.Along the way, the blog became one respected source of news and analysis on international efforts to address the humanitarian impacts of cluster munitions, in particular. This emphasis on clu...

It seems serendipitously synchronous that I’ve been reading Jamie Glazov’s United in Hate: The Left’s Romance with Tyranny and Terror during a week in which Sarah Palin has been back in the headlines.  In the first half of his book, Glazov details the political pilgrimages various intellectuals, artists and assorted left-wingers have made over the years to tyrannies ...

‘80s-throwback Takes on Surfwear, It's the New Insight Tees

New graphic tees of collaboration between Australian surf, brand Insight (started by Something’s Natalie Wood and Ksubi’s George Gorrow) and German art-rock favorites Chicks on Speed was born -- inspired by we call an ‘80s-throwback takes on surfwear. Sensing humor in fashion while not getting out-fashioned is definitely one of the tips. These are some tees that go beyond graphic prints put on front show, but combining all of those with chic cut and sew. Pretty sexy, to sum them up -- and hey, I don't mind they're made in China.Images via tobi ( you can buy online here too!). Alternative shops on Karmaloop and Azalea Boutique

Bedpost offers insight into your sex life
2008-07-23 10:00:00
Screenshot by Chris MessinaBedpost, a web 2.0 application that remains in alpha, aims to give you insights about your sex life. By entering in partners, time durations and tags to describe your "doing the horizontal" data, the app appears to build a calendar of stats and averages. Other multimedia functionality includes uploading photos of partners, in case you'd like to brag to yourself about your previous conquests. The creator states:"I built it for myself about 4 years ago, and this is the culmination of years and years of thinking about how to make it available to the world. ... Before long, you'll have a rolling history of your sex life on which to reflect."That is, if you really find it useful to reflect on the spirit of sexual past. We can only hope this service doesn't include a "people you might know" feature.[Thx, Tantek!]

Does Your Information Lead to Insight?
2008-06-04 11:51:00
Everyday we are bombarded with tons and tons of new information and truckloads of old information just repeated. You would think that if sheer exposure to information really mattered we’d be a world of geniuses. The truth is, the exposure to information really doesn’t do anything more than make us feel overwhelmed. The question is, what insight do you take away from your information? This has great consequence for all of us who call ourselves communicators. And who of us isn’t? We all have a teachable point of view, a unique selling proposition, or some idea that we want to communicate. How is it that you do more than transfer information and move to insight? There may be many ways, but one of the ways is make sure you’re communicating what people care about; something that gets their attention, that makes their heart race, that gets them excited and makes them lean forward in anticipation. Ask yourself this question, are you just a conveyor of information, or are you...

Jill Bolte Taylor: My stroke of insight
2008-05-29 06:14:00
This story is truly astonishing. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Neuroanatomist who had an remarkable experience of self-discovery. In this experience, she found Nirvana, that place of total peacefulness we all seek. At the same time, she discovered it's neuroanatomy. She effectively defined mindfulness. TED | Talks Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for. One morning, a blood vessel in Jill Bolte Taylor's brain exploded. As a brain scientist, she realized she had a ringside seat to her own stroke. She watched as her brain functions shut down one by one: motion, speech, memory, self-awareness ... Amazed to find herself alive, Taylor spent eight years recovering her ability to think, walk and talk. She has become a spokesperson for stroke recovery and for the possibility of coming back from brain injury stronger than before. In her case, although the stroke damaged the left side of her brain, her recovery unleashed a torrent of creative energy fr...

Review: Insight on a Gamer

The electronic gaming industry is huge with many games earning as much as blockbuster Hollywood movies. The industry brings in billions of dollars, which at times is more than the movie industry. There are many fans of electronic games, for which I am one, so it is by no coincidence that there are many blogs dedicated to this topic. This week I look at the first gaming focused blog, since I started writing free reviews, called Insight on a Gamer.Web Site: Insight on a GamerDescription: My insight on up and coming games, reviews for released games, and my insight on anything game related.Design There are many web sites that are geared towards the gaming industry, and most of them contain a lot of high-tech graphics. Francis Galton's Insight
2008-05-25 12:59:00
From American Renaissance, a very problematic website due to its racism, but one that I nevertheless check out regularly. Why? It's the only place anywhere you can see frank talk about race. About the Black and Hispanic underclass, about the illegal alien invasion, and about all sorts of un-PC stuff.I can't say one word against these 12 million Mesoamerican illegals who have ruined my state and are going to run my whole country. I can't say one word against these nightmarish Black and Hispanic Underclasses in our cities. One of the worst problems with living in a heavily Hispanic area is that you can't say the slightest thing against them, their gangs, graffiti, crime, illegals, massive school failure and dropout rates, out of control illegitimacy rates, wild teenage pregnancy rates - no one can say one word about any of this stuff. If I do, I am immediately shouted down with accusations of racism. The Hispanics have learned to wield the race card like every other liar and huckste...

2008-05-20 01:25:00
Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D.—the "Singin’ Scientist" for brain research has been named by TIME Magazine as one of "the world’s 100 most influential people" as a scientist and thinker. Her photo is on the cover of the magazine—inside the center of the M. The designation is the result of her talk earlier this year at a TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conference, dedicated to spreading worthwhile ideas. Other people on the list include Hillary Clinton, Steve Jobs, and Bruce Springsteen. Dr. Jill served on the NAMI national board from 1994-1997 and is currently president of NAMI Indiana’s Greater Bloomington affiliate. Television Producer and host Dick Clark wrote the following:A neuroanatomist and professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, Taylor, 48, realized one day in 1996 that she was suffering a brain hemorrhage. She felt her faculties slipping away and, as a brain scientist, understood exactly what was happening to her. Over the next decade, she fought ...

getting insight from web research- the next generation
2008-05-13 15:52:00
People have been using the web to do consumer research for over a decade. Its had its fair share of problems especially in quant, where it's already been proven that only a very distinct group of consumers ever complete surveys online. However, as people become comfortable with sharing more and more of their lives online, it's becoming a very interesting place to get a feel for what people are thinking and doing. People are using blogging tools and media uploading tools to help them get a better understanding of their consumers and these are often richer and more insightful than the typical focus group. With 2.0 technologies, all this only going to improve. One example I really like is Noah Brier's Brand Tagging project. This simple application that allows people to enter words they associate with specific brands and see the results from others. What I like here is that the tool employs some good thinking. It feels more like play, than research. It doesn't take a lot of time and...
