2008-05-26 16:46:00
A wanted insurgent suspect was arrested in Yala's Than To district yesterday. Acting on a tip from an informant, authorities scoured Jaropae village and found Masoguelee Asu, 30, a suspected leader of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil militant unit which is active in the area. The group is believed to be responsible for an ambush in the district on Feb 11 which injured four border patrol officers Mr Masoguelee was wanted on an arrest warrant for charges of attempted murder, criminal association and teaming up to oppose the authorities. In Narathiwat, Deputy Education Minister Boonlue Prasertsopha, who travelled to Muang district to hear first-hand about problems education institutions were facing, promised to propose that cabinet allocate 400 million baht for the construction of new buildings for community colleges in the three southernmost provinces. He said education was the best cure in the long run for security problems. As well, to solve a shortage of doctors ...
In India, Death to Global Business
2008-05-11 03:00:00
How a violent?and spreading?Maoist insurgency threatens the country’s runaway growth On the night of Apr. 24, a group of 300 men and women, armed with bows and arrows and sickles and led by gun-wielding commanders, emerged swiftly and silently from the dense forest in India’s Chhattisgarh state. The guerrillas descended on an iron ore processing plant ...
Meeting the Chinese Cyber Insurgency Threat
2008-05-06 18:37:00
The recent news reports about the Chinese hackers invading the Indian cyber space has opened up the debate on “Cyber Wars” yet again.  While USA is already the global leader in military warfare and has also formally structured a presence in Cyber Warfare through the formation of  a Cyber Command, China appears to be challenging ...
The connection between the left, and the insurgency
2008-03-26 13:58:00
The Washington Times, this morning: Researchers at Harvard say that publicly voiced doubts about the U.S. occupation of Iraq have a measurable “emboldenment effect” on insurgents there. Periods of intense news media coverage in the United States of criticism about the war, or of polling about public opinion on the conflict, are followed by a small but quantifiable increases in the number of attacks on civilians and U.S. forces in Iraq, according to a study by Radha Iyengar, a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar in health policy research at Harvard and Jonathan Monten of the Belfer Center at the university’s Kennedy School of Government. The increase in attacks is more pronounced in areas of Iraq that have better access to international news media, the authors conclude in a report titled “Is There an ‘Emboldenment’ Effect? Evidence from the Insurgency in Iraq.” This isn’t rocket science, here, gang. Which party controls the press, again? And wh...

NEFA Chart: State of the Sunni Insurgency in Iraq 2008
2008-03-08 23:35:00
The NEFA Foundation has released a new chart that I have created mapping the complex network of Sunni insurgent groups fighting in Iraq. The chart includes representations for the four dominant insurgent umbrella groups--Al-Qaida's Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), the Reform and Jihad Front (RJF), the Political Council for the Iraqi Resistance (PCIR), and the Front for Jihad and Change (FJC)--as well as over twenty individual organizations, including Al-Qaida, the Ansar al-Sunnah Army, the Army of al-Mustafa,...(read more)
Will Divisions Undermine the Somali Insurgency?
2008-02-28 16:00:00
I have an article in the Middle East Times today examining rifts between the ARS (Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia) and the Shabab wing of the Somali insurgency. An excerpt: A communiqu recently issued by Abu Mansoor al-Amriki, an U.S. jihadist aligned with Shabab, explains the split between the two groups. Entitled, "A Message to the Mujahideen in Particular and the Muslims in General," Amriki's communiqu describes the ARS (which he continues to refer to as "the Islamic Courts") as nationalist...(read more)
Clinton inevitability: The insurgency is in its last throes
2008-02-13 23:08:00
Just as a quick hit, I’ve noticed a number of interesting pieces floating about the blogosphere that delve into the hidden dynamics and power struggles of the Clinton campaign and why it, originally as inevitable as the sunrise and paying taxes, is now foundering so badly. The inestimable Pam Spaulding has a roundup of Michele Cottle (from The New Republican) and Josh Greene (from The Atlantic) looking into the resignation of Patti Solis Doyle, the role she played as power broker and manager, and how Clinton, like Bush, seems to prize loyalty and discipline over competence and effectiveness. Last week, Obsidian Wings’ Hilzoy looked at coverage of the campaign and Clinton’s failures (including the Doyle resignation), and asked why the heck could Clinton have not foreseen this. Finally, Matthew Yglesias looks at the Clinton campaign continuing to employ the utterly odious Mark Penn (who spent the night of Clinton’s sound defeat on Tuesday in the Potomac Primar...
UK troops are 'poorly trained for insurgency'
2008-01-29 07:02:00
British soldiers serving in Iraq were ill prepared and poorly trained for the violent insurgency that erupted in that country in the summer of 2003.   According to a senior army officer's report, a number of soldiers had behaved disgracefully and treated Iraqi detainees "in a deliberate and callous manner, but the abuse was not symptomatic of a general breakdown in discipline in the Army.   Brigadier Robert Aitken, director of Army Personnel Strategy, claims in his report that a majority of soldiers and officers have conducted themselves honourably and professionally.   Acting on the report, Britain's Army Chief, General Sir Richard Dannatt, has promised administrative action against those found guilty of prisoner abuse in Iraq, and added that some of the accused could even be dismissed from the armed services.   General Dannatt's warning follows the revelation of an Iraqi hotel receptionist, Baha Musa, 26, dying after suffering 93 injuries while being ...

Tomgram: Rebecca Solnit, Journey into the Heart of an Insurgency
2008-01-17 20:36:00
by Tom Engelhardt The Zapatistas, the Mexican rebels who emerged from the jungles of the impoverished state of Chiapas, Mexico, on New Year's Day in 1994, have been on the mind of and in the writings of Rebecca Solnit since almost the moment she arrived at Tomdispatch. In 2004, she spoke of their uprising as "a revolt against the official version of history"; in 2006, she suggested that they had "staged a revolution, not only in what the status of Indians would be in that country but in the nature of revolution too"; and, at the end of 2007, she called them collectively "the most powerful voice coming from the Spanish-speaking majority of the Americas." Now, 14 years after they burst dramatically into world consciousness, she's traveled to Chiapas to visit Zapatista-held territory and spend a New Year's Day with them. The author of the inspired Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities returns with this report. Tom R...
Counter-Snowball-Insurgency in Afghanistan
2008-01-03 00:53:00
January 2, 2008. Arrogant Americans! You doubt the throwing arms of the Mujahideen-i Barf? Once again, an ill-prepared foreign power underestimates its adversary in Afghanistan. These soldiers are lucky the Afghan kids spared them a face-washing in the snow. PS: “Barf” is the Farsi/Dari/Tajiki word for snow. PS#2: I’ve just “coined” a new term; counter-snowball-insurgency (COSNIN). Use this term without paying me a royalty and you shall hear from my lawyers.
Southern Discomfort: Thailand's Insurgency Enters Year Five

Narathiwat, Thailand. Friday, 4 January, marks the 4th anniversary of the start of the insurgency in Southern Thailand. To date, more than 2,700 people have been killed, 8,000 wounded. There have been more than 850 bombings, and many more failed or aborted bombings, including six bombs on New Year’s Eve in the border town of Sungai Golok, that wounded 32. Unconventional Counter-Insurgency in Afghanistan
2007-12-09 05:59:00
December 9, 2007. It’s nice to see that the American military publishes master’s degree thesis papers online. Share, share, share. I’ve read a few thesis papers by officers in military post-graduate schools and they are quite decent. This one is next on my reading list: Major John R. Dyke and Major John R. Crisafulli. “Unconventional Counter-Insurgency in Afghanistan,” Master’s of Science in Defense Analysis Thesis Paper. Naval Postgraduate School - Monterey, California. June 2006. So what have the Army Majors John R. come up with? Here’s the abstract: Immediately following the attacks of September 11, 2001, a small number of U.S. Army Special Forces (USSF) invaded the Al Qaeda safe haven of Afghanistan. USSF A-teams, operating with almost total independence, conducted highly successful Unconventional Warfare “through, with, and by” the indigenous Afghan militias of the Northern Alliance. The USSF and their indigenous Afghan ar...

Living with an Insurgency

Yup. the Iraqi insurgency hit the pet market in Baghdad yesterday. I mean, what a way to win “hearts and minds”: kill that unIslamic “foufou” poochie and parakeets, not to mention kids. Suspected al-Qaida fighters killed three Iraqi soldiers early Thursday, then stole their Humvees to ambush rival Sunnis south of Baghdad, police said, a brazen example of the challenges still facing Iraqis despite a lull in violence. The attack by the al-Qaida fighters south of Baghdad began when they targeted an Iraqi army patrol near the rural ...

Al Qaeda and the Taliban's Pakistani insurgency

The Taliban are attacking President Pervez Musharraf's hold on political and military power in Pakistan. The Taliban is also working to weaken the resolve of the police, military, and civilians in the Northwest Frontier Province and beyond. The Taliban and al Qaeda have struck Pakistani military bases in Dargai, Kharian, Dera Ismail Khan, Hangu, and North and South Waziristan. Military convoys have been repeatedly hit by suicide attacks, improvised explosive devices, and ambushes throughout the Northwest Frontier Province. The Bannu suicide attack is the latest in series of Taliban suicide strikes at civilian, police, military, and governmental targets inside Pakistan. The tribal agencies have long been recognized as the nexus for al Qaeda and the Taliban's suicide campaigns in Pakistan, Afghanistan and beyond. The Pakistani Ministry of the Interior has repeatedly accused the powerful South Waziristan Taliban leaders Baituallah and Abdullah Mehsud of carrying out the suicide campai...

Insurgency Genre:Half Life 2 Mod Platform: PC ESRB: ? (Mod) Rating: 4 out of 5 Remember Counter-Strike? Of course you do! Counter-Strike started off as an original Half Life mod by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe, and grew into one of the most played online first person shooter of all time (right next to Unreal Tournament). It became so popular that Valve released the game for the original X-Box and released Counter-Strike; Source using Half Life 2’s engine. Now that Counter-Strike left its original Half Life mod roots, countless imitators tried to take its place. But many people are excited about Insurgency, a Half Life 2 mod that takes place in the Iraq War. So here’s the question that I asked myself once I finished downloading the mod off Filefront.com; “Does the mod has what it takes to commit a savage take over on Counter-Strike?”. Despite the serious lag, this is another download that Half Life 2 modding fanatics must get. ...

BAGHDAD, Aug. 22 ? Armed groups increasingly control the antiquated switching stations that channel electricity around Iraq, the electricity minister said Wednesday. A Quick And Brutal Retaliation For My Soviet Counter-Insurgency Post
2007-07-25 23:33:00
July 25, 2007. The Afghan-American blogger Ronin over at Looking at the World Through Slanted Eyes, who is apparently an admiral in the Afghan Navy’s Pacific Fleet, took exception to my post on the insurgency tactics of a certain Soviet Captain Zakharov. In response he swiped the picture from my profile and added a few elements: Ochen khorosho! Ronin didn’t even have time to let me put up my planned post on the worst Soviet officer in Afghanistan. But to show that I am no lover of Bolsheviks, I submit to you a picture of myself in my full Hizb-i Islami glory:                 -    And yes, we Hizbis do like hanging out with Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders when we are not rocketing Kabul or slitting the throats of Soviet conscripts. Insurgency Mod
2007-07-22 04:24:00
I recently downloaded this great Half-Life 2 mod, and I gotta say, it's one of the best mods I've ever played. It is a multiplayer FPS based around the present day in Iraq, and was made by soldiers that have first hand experience. It is very realistic, there is virtually no HUD, or interface, which ups the realism. You die fairly quickly, and the physics are very realistic. It is really fun, especially when you have the RPG launcher, unlike most games, this rocket flys fast, so you get super easy kills. It is really a great deal of fun. I believe all you need is one of Valves Source based games (Counter-Strike Source, Day of Defeat Source, Half-Life 2, etc.) which will allow you to download the Source SDK Base which is needed to play the game. I would reccommend this to any FPS fan looking for a realistic game, or if you want to know what it's like in the ARMY, as it requires a great deal of teamwork. Great game, 9/10.==>LINKThank you for subscribing to my blog!
Gen. Petraeus: Insurgency Has Been Quashed In Anbar

Insurgency in deep South 'could evolve into civil war'
2007-07-15 16:32:00
Security expert: Need information strategyBy Post reportersA security expert warned yesterday insurgent violence in the deep South could degenerate into civil war. Political scientist Panithan Watanayakorn said the strife-torn region could be beset by guerrilla warfare, like Aceh in Indonesia.Mr Panithan, also security adviser to the prime minister, said it could then plunge into a catastrophic civil war.''It is important the government learns about this insurgent organisation to undermine its structure,'' he said.Mr Panithan said the insurgents had been successful in convincing the public they were capable of realising their goals.''And this reflects the futility of government efforts over the past 20 years [to tackle the unrest],'' he said.He said the state needed to develop a strategy of information management to counter the insurgency. He was speaking to a forum on violence in the deep South at a seminar on southern development organised by the Democrat party in Songkhla....

Update on Afghanistan Insurgency
2007-06-18 06:05:00
This is just an update on the last article in today's Motiveless Crime News Headlines segment. The BBC is reporting that the Taliban basically lifted the idea of planting the bomb on a bus straight from the tactics of insurgents in Baghdad...great, this is what they mean by "Al Qaeda" (its a learning block on how to get your point across violently).According to witnesses the bomb exploded in front of a police headquarters and the area was littered with blood and body parts. It brings to mind more than a few of the horrific terrorist scenes that Bret Easton Ellis has been known for. It appears that the last three days are marking a sharp rise in Afghanistan insurgent attacks. The comparison to Iraq added into the mix means that the US could have an even messier mess in the Middle East...
