Junk Science in Spite of the Public Interest
2012-01-05 18:17:00
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has long used hyperbole to discourage the public from consuming sugar and sugar alternatives—or really, any foods that taste good. (This is the group that deemed fettuccine alfredo a “heart attack on a plate,” after all.) Now CSPI is using the same tricks to frighten consumers away from a new no-calorie, stevia-based sweetener. The Wall Street Journal reports that CSPI is concerned that this sweetener may cause cancer, but the research CSPI cites apparently took place before the specific sweetener was even developed. But why let small details get in the way of yet another “maybe it’s carcinogenic” claim? If this refrain sounds like a familiar tune, you might recall that last year CSPI also linked 4-methylimidazole (caramel coloring used in some soft drinks) with cancer. The news media was quick to pick up the story, but often failed to notice what CSPI conveniently omitted– that researchers gave the rodents an ultr...

We Shine the Spotlight on PERSON OF INTEREST Star Kevin Chapman
2011-12-16 16:38:00
When talking to star Kevin Chapman about his role as Detective Lionel Fusco on PERSON OF INTEREST, one thing becomes quickly clear:  he loves every second working on one of primetimes’ hottest new TV shows.  Sharing what drew him to the show initially, Kevin did not hesitate to mention it was the high caliber of creators, writers and co-actors that made it so appealing for him.  Truth be told, it has become a dream job for him and he feels excited each time he gets a new script.  In fact, each episode reads like a page-turning mystery story and he is utterly thrilled to find himself right smack in the middle of it.  To work on a show where there is this nearly omnipresent machine that generates numbers corresponding to a person whose life is on the line, is like working in the Land of Oz — and our heroes take turns being the man behind the curtain to save those people’s lives that have entered the cross-hairs of fate.  PERSON OF INTEREST is a wonderful twist ...

Ask the Addict: Spoilers for DEXTER, BONES, PERSON OF INTEREST, HART OF DIX
2011-12-08 19:34:00
Is there any chance at all that Sunday’s DEXTER makes up for last week’s snore of an episode? — Dillon The TV Addict:If by “make up for,” you mean offer one of the most unexpected and uncomfortable plot twists in the series’ sordid history, than well yes, Sunday’s penultimate episode of the season is not to be missed. That said, having still not shaken of the after-affects of one of the most spine-tingling and stupefying scenes DEXTER has ever dared to deliver, we do feel it necessary to warn viewers that on a scale of “icky” to “grossest thing you can ever imagine,” Sunday’s episode is off the charts! Any clues as to when Brennan will be delivering her baby on BONES? — Amy The TV Addict:While we’re not 100% sure of this, all signs are pointing to Brennan delivering her baby when BONES returns from its post-January hiatus. What’s more, in typical BONES fashion, Brennan’s delivery won’t be n...

I have some links of interest today! I maybe MIA (missing in action) for a bit longer.  I was cleaning up, and I was moving things around that I suppose were to heavy for me.  Sigh.  Now I have hurt my back. Certain kiddos reminded me that I can't do things that I used to do, and maybe I should take it easy.  (giggles) I reminded THEM - I'm NOT that OLD! Sidenote:  They may have a slight point but still... I haven't started to use my Dragon Naturally speaking either.  Ahem - so expect the normal typos and grammar mistakes! Gaslight is a movie from 1944.  Gaslighting is a term that was taken from the movie. The husband in the movie wanted his wife to think she was insane for his own personal motive.  He would get the gaslights to flicker at certain times, and then refuse to acknowledge they flickered at all.  He would basically tell her  that she was imagining it, and it must be due to stress, etc.   Another exampl...

Are you one of the millions of LOST fan who may-or-may-not have been secretly rooting against the success of PERSON OF INTEREST in the hopes that following its cancelation J.J. Abrams would revive the long dormant ODD JOBS spin-off starring Michael Emerson and Terry O’Quinn? Well, firstly stop that, because we’re really digging PERSON OF INTEREST and second, don’t hold your breath. Or at least that’s our takeaway following today’s announcement that has CBS awarding the underrated Jim Caviezel/Michael Emerson series a full season pick-up. Also getting the go ahead for a full season (or to be more specific, twenty episodes and an order for two scripts) is UNFORGETTABLE, the season’s number one new drama, averaging 14 million viewing, improving on its Tuesday time period by 3% in both viewers and adults 18-49 versus last season. Not so lucky, A GIFTED MAN, whose fate remains, at least as of this posting, unknown. Stay tuned.

Paul Sullivan and Gordon Wittenmyer both downplayed Bruce Levine's report, saying it's normal happenstance for this time of the year. I continue to believe that this meeting will be a page turner for the Cubs. They have to know it's time to move some people and get a look at the likes of a Brett Jackson. The study has been conducted based on data from different e-commerce websites between January and April, 2011. The search queries by users on these e-commerce sites were taken into account. A close analysis into this study focuses on the difference between smartphone and other mobile devices. Firstly, the e-commerce sites are hugely responsible for making for creating a market with growing demand for mobile devices. Secondly, in India, the total share of smartphone market is relatively less than that of feature phones. But even then, whopping 44 % online users showed interest in purchasing smartphones via the e-commerce portals. This finding bridges the gul...

The immediate target is to preserve the mortgage interest deduction but they are also quaking in their boots about the inevitable termination of life support for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Mortgage Interest Deduction In The Sights Of Deficit Reduction
2010-11-11 05:23:00
President Obama creating the National Commission On Fiscal Responsibility and Reform The National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform released a draft proposal today of their deficit reducition ideas and as I've previously mentioned the mortgage interest deduction is being targeted. If you look at page 26 you will see that one proposal is to eliminate the deduction for second homes, home equity loans, and mortgages over $500,000. What's not clear is do they literally mean if your mortage is over $500,000 you can't deduct any of the interest or just the portion that is attributable to the mortgage over $500,000? And if it's the latter how would you calculate that? Could get complicated. Of course, the mortgage interest...
This Month in Real Estate – Interest Rates Hit Historic Low
2010-10-27 22:31:00
The housing market continues its slow recovery without the aid of the now expired tax credit. Sales are slower but growing, and prices remain on par with last year’s levels. Interest rates also hit a new historic low, a major factor in helping keep mortgage payments low, which is expected to spur sales. The economy shone a bit brighter in September. It grew faster during the second quarter than expected, and companies continued to hire. Experts believe there is now less risk of a double-dip recession. Now, the Federal Reserve Board’s challenge is not if the economy will grow but how fast. Driven by concerns that inflation is low, the Fed began purchasing treasury securities on a small scale. It used this tactic at the height of the recession to help draw down the interest rate and boost spending. Experts anticipate both the economy and the housing market will continue their path on the way to a complete recovery. This march back up provides excellent opportunities: an ample sele...
Is The Mortgage Interest Deduction Doomed?
2010-10-26 14:07:00
I've never quite understood why home mortgage interest is tax deductible. It seems to me like the government shouldn't be in the business of subsidizing people's lifestyles - the bigger the home that you buy the bigger the subsidy you get. And this is unlike any other purchase you make. If you buy your groceries on a credit card and end up paying interest on that debt you can't deduct it. Similarly, you can't deduct the interest on a car loan. The only explanation I've ever heard is that the more people that own homes the less likely they are to riot in the streets. Oh...and I guess the banks and the National Association of Realtors are pretty powerful...

Commandments of Men had a discussion on "Love is an Choice".  I think we can agree with how some people use that phrase, and others frankly use it as a tool of manipulation and guilt. I don't deny that a part of loving is a choice, but it must be emphasized that it is indeed only a part of the larger equation. Love, itself, isn't really a choice at all. To ACT upon it, or to ACT in a loving manner even when devoid of emotion and feelings of love, is a choice - not love in and of itself. Love, in and of itself, is only a verb in a portion of it's meaning. TO love is a verb. I'm afraid the phrase "love is a choice" ultimately devalues the emotional aspect and power of love, and I don't believe for a second that this is something God wants. It also makes for the fodder of warfare for authoritarian types. My ex, for instance, was coerced into believing that she'd made a "choice" to love me, a choice which she could "correct".A Wife's Submission, Charis wrote a pi...

Jesus said we would know the truth and the truth would set us FREE. Andersen challenges Christian men and women to embrace and appreciate God-given gender differences without giving place to haughty spirits of superiority, degrading feelings of inferiority, hatred, prejudice, fear of one another?s differences, or the sinful need to either be in charge or to submit in an idolatrous manner. 2010-02-22 03:37:00
Sounds like rates will eventually rise.  I've been telling buyers this for several months now.  It is a great time to buy.  Plus BRAC is coming in late 2010.  So get in before the competition comes.*************************-*******************************-*******************************-************The Fed's surprise move of raising the rate it charges banks for emergency loans by a quarter-percentage point to 0.75% has bond investors rattled. While this move does not directly impact 30 year fixed rates, many economists believe that this is another signal that the central bank's extremely low rates are on the way out. Couple this with the Fed's plan of scaling back the expanded mortgage-backed securities purchase program that they have pursued for the last 15 months, and it becomes quite clear that 30 year fixed rates will be rising from the 5.000%ish range that home buyers have become used to.   Now is the time to act! Red Sox Will Have Interest In Aroldis Chapman
2009-09-23 13:41:00
Expect the Red Sox to have interest in 21-year-old lefty Aroldis Chapman when he becomes a free agent, according to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald and ESPN's Amy K. Nelson. The Yankees are also expected to be in the mix. Will the Sox attempt to buy up all the hotel rooms in Andorra? Chapman may be granted free agency before the playoffs. The bidding could exceed $40MM, and Chapman could potentially sign before the regular free agent signing period begins. Nelson talked to Chapman's agent Edwin Leonel Mejia, who plans to hold private workouts in Europe. Aside from the Red Sox and Yankees, Silverman names the Angels and Rangers as likely suitors. The Orioleswere connected to Chapmanin July, but the BaltimoreSun's Jeff Zrebiec didn't expect them to join a bidding war. Mejia explained Chapman's preference to Silverman: "He simply wants to go with whatever team wants him the most."
