Now Google Expresses Interest In UID – How Will The Project Benefit F
2009-11-13 09:56:00
Just yesterday, we saw Yahoo being interested in the Unique Identification Project. As quoted by Yahoo’s CEO Carol Bartz, “We met the Prime Minister today and discussed among other things, how Yahoo can help the Government in the project.” Looks like several more giants will be coming in soon. As said in our last post, under such circumstances when everyone has expressed their interests, then how could Google just sit and stare. It started with Microsoft wishing to help the Government in the UID project followed by Intel, Yahoo and now its none other than Google. Google has also made it clear that they are interested to play a major role in the forthcoming project. There are several reasons as to why such tech giants are interested in this project. Huge databases to organize the Unique ID’s, integration with different Governmental agencies and the online authentication makes it much more than just a project because of which such tech-giants are keen enough t...

Yahoo – Cisco Express Interest In India’s UID Project – W
2009-11-12 06:25:00
We have been tracking the UID project headed by Nandan Nilekani since its announcement in India and have been analysing its impact as well on various industries and players. We have questioned as to how this massive project would be completed and which route would it take? Whether it will be  mobile? or something else? Now it seems players from the technology world have started expressing their interest in aiding this massive project. So Yahoo’s CEO Carol Bartz who was down in India expressed her interest in helping the Indian government with the project. The Yahoo CEO said, “The UID project involves a huge database. We, at Yahoo, have expertise in handling such huge amount of data. We met the Prime Minister today and discussed, among other things, how Yahoo can help the Government in the project,” There are ofcourse other technology players too like Cisco and Intel who have expressed their interest and are in talks with Mr.Nilekani as well as to what role they can play ...

Red Sox Will Have Interest In Aroldis Chapman
2009-09-23 13:41:00
Expect the Red Sox to have interest in 21-year-old lefty Aroldis Chapman when he becomes a free agent, according to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald and ESPN's Amy K. Nelson. The Yankees are also expected to be in the mix. Will the Sox attempt to buy up all the hotel rooms in Andorra? Chapman may be granted free agency before the playoffs. The bidding could exceed $40MM, and Chapman could potentially sign before the regular free agent signing period begins. Nelson talked to Chapman's agent Edwin Leonel Mejia, who plans to hold private workouts in Europe. Aside from the Red Sox and Yankees, Silverman names the Angels and Rangers as likely suitors. The Orioleswere connected to Chapmanin July, but the BaltimoreSun's Jeff Zrebiec didn't expect them to join a bidding war. Mejia explained Chapman's preference to Silverman: "He simply wants to go with whatever team wants him the most."

Marquis has support & interest in NY
2009-09-22 19:02:00
One day this spring my son wanted to watch the Little League World Series when it was on TV, the team that was on that day was from Staten Island, each kid said their name and there favorite player. At least 20 of the 25 players named Jason Marquis as their favorite player, the veteran pitcher was a NYC LL hero who threw a no hitter in the LL World Series .The kids from his home town aren't the only ones who support the local star, Jeff Francoeur is quoted today as saying Marquis approached him about becoming a Met this off-season and Frenchy thinks it's a good idea. Francoeur a former teammate of Marquis feels he provides just what the Mets need 200 innings and 12-15 wins. Marquis has been on the Mets radar for a long time, going all the way back to his days with the Cards. In 2006 the Cards looked dead in the water at the deadline and there was a rumor that the Mets looked into the cost of Marquis. In 2007 the Cubs tried to move him straight up for Endy Chavez and then again in ...
Interest Rate Forecasts 2010 and Beyond
2009-09-22 08:54:00
Readers Question: Where can I find a reliable forecast of interest rates over the next 5 years. I have seen wild claims of everything from a minus figure in 2010 to 15%. I am interested in likely mortgage rates. Is it likely that interest rates could rise by 1% a year over the next 5 years?Predicting interest rates is difficult. At the start of 2008, when interest rates were 5%, and inflation was above the governments inflation target, how many people would have predicted within 12 months, interest rates would have fallen to 0.5%?Like many economic factors, interest rate forecasts are more likely to be accurate in the short term than the long term. I think most economists would be reluctant to forecast interest rates more than 1 or 2 years in advance. To predict interest rates in 5 years time, you might as well throw a couple of dice - hence the variety of interest rate forecasts you may have come across. In fact many economists are reluctant to get into forecasting because you are ...

Bank of England's Interest Rate Decisions
2009-09-15 08:12:00
The Bank of England have responsibility for setting interest rates. There is a brief overview of how they set interest rates here.Since the Bank of England was made independent, in theory, there is greater transparency with the Bank of England publishing the minutes of minutes into deciding interest rates. But, behind the closed doors, recent revelations suggest it is not just a polite gentleman's club. According to David Blanchflower, a former member of the MPC, a divisive battle was played out before the Bank's dramatic decision to cut interest rates by 1.5% in November. (see: New Statesman)David Blanchflower was critical of the Banks model of deciding interest rates and predicting the state of the economy. He argues the Bank relied too much on theoretical models which came to place an unwarranted emphasis on the risks of inflation and underestimated the growing evidence of recession and financial crisis."I focused on the empirical data suggesting Britain was heading for recessio...

Two years of a deep and prolonged recession and we still can?t seem to get a hold of the toxic assets plaguing the books of banks. High Debt and Low Interest Rates
2009-08-17 10:14:00
In an era of rising budgets deficits, an important question to pose is how much can governments borrow?Typically, higher government borrowing raises these issues:Higher borrowing leads to higher interest rates as governments need to attract more people to buy bonds. This rise in interest rates is known as financial crowding out and can lead to lower growth.Higher borrowing leads to higher taxesHigher borrowing can create inflationary pressure, if the borrowing is financed by increasing supply of money.Higher borrowing can risk destabilising the exchange rate if markets fear there is a real inflationary pressure.Higher Borrowing can cause resource crowding out because the private sector has less funds for investment because it is holding more government bonds. However, some of these textbook problems often do not occur in reality. - especially, when the economy is in recession and private saving rates are rising. As Brad de Long notes (link), in the past 12 months, the US treasury has ...

2009-07-26 11:01:00
I am a salaried employee. I have made a 5 year tax-saving FD for Rs.30000 and a 3 year FD for Rs.10000 in the financial year 2008-09. I am not any income other than salary and interest. I have following two questions: 1) In respect of FD of 3 years, can I pay tax on interest income in the 3rd year (i.e. cash basis) instead of paying it every year on interest accrued ? 2) In respect of tax-saving FD of 5 yrs, can it be taxed like NSC i.e. interest earned be treated as being reinvested and eligible as deduction u/s 80C ? If not, can this also be taxed on cash basis in the year of receipt of interest income? Please help...Sumit Kumar The income of interest can be shown on the basis of cash ( receipt  ) or mercantile i.e due basis. But once you selected a particular system of accounting , you can not change . Therefore, it is perfectly alright if for you to pay the tax on the interest on FD for 3 years on maturity only. But if you follow that rule, you can not choose ...
The Tigers Have No Interest in Bradley
2009-07-26 02:06:00
So this afternoon Steve Stone sends out a Tweet on his baseballstone@twitter account saying that the Tigers are interested in Cubs RF Milton Bradley. I hear from a baseball agent who says the same thing and then after Stone's post hits the internet and I put the rumor on my blog all hell breaks loose. So let's review what I posted this afternoon. The headline of the post says "Can it be? Are the Tigers after Milton Bradley? The post talks about the rumor and ends this way:  I will be working my baseball sources for more on this rumor but if it is indeed true the Cubs need to make that deal ASAP!So from that post and Stone's Twitter everyone...

I feel I can help the team. It's a good young team and I feel we're going to be better next year. Hopefully, I'll make a decision soon. My agent told me, 'I'm going to put you in a good situation. Renewing Research Interest In Bicycles
2009-06-11 17:20:00
"The early bicycle manufacturing industry laid the groundwork for interchangeable parts and the assembly line was used to bring down the costs of automobiles. Even Henry Ford's first automobile was driven on four bicycle wheels. The Wright Brothers utilized much from their knowledge of bicycle stability and component design to loft the worlds first airplane into the air. The automobile and airplane have received unbridled attention since their discoveries. We are now flying into space and developing cars with engines that run on water, but the bicycle has sadly lost the interest, both scientifically and financially, of the past century's scientists and engineers. If a renewed emphasis were given to the bicycle we may find we have already developed the truest "green" solution to many of the world's environmental, global warming, obesity, sprawl and gridlock problems. Using other industries as examples, these kinds of solutions most likely did not come from tinkering and backyard e...

The sign i was waiting for has appeared. That is the breaking of previous high in the property sector. It doesn't matter whether isit the banks or the props or the offshore. One of them ought to lead. Now that the props have moved, I set my sights on the below:a. They must continue to go up, or at least no candlestick weakness. I view it extremely bearish if this breakout come back down on heavy volume.b. Banks, offshore to be the next. Tech sector? I wouldn't bet on them as yet.c. Offshore services like swiber, federal, swissco...etc.. should also be on the watchlist.d. Commodities, i think put one side first..e. My friend reminded me that the settlement for index May futures is coming up...hence index may be volatile.. acid test is what happens after that.Super test my patience... it is trading nicely along the 20-dma.. Everyone has one year in their life that has a greater impact on them than any other year. Mine was 1994. Once a week, I'll recap that year. Click here for the table of contents. My morning routine, when I was in Washington, was the same on most weekdays once I went to work for the Pinkerton Risk Assessment Services people. I found that the routine, like my quitting smoking and my ongoing efforts to lose an additional ten pounds, helped keep things feeling as though they were under control. It's strange to think that the world seemed out of control, given how little actually happened. Many memoirs are written about important events or fascinating happenings or meeting people who are beyond interesting -- or, barring that, being beyond interesting oneself.Nothing important happened to me in 1994, not in the sense that most people think of it. In retrospect, fifteen years later, I think lots of important things happened to me, but they are the kind of important things that are hi...

0% Interest Credit Cards - An Introduction
2009-01-14 20:18:00
Who doesn’t want to have a credit card with no interest? That’s exactly what 0% credit cards are meant for. With no interest to pay, these cards also appeal to those who do not prefer the idea of keeping credit cards. It means that these cards make it possible for you to buy or borrow money without the need of paying any extra amount. This is what makes these cards popular among the masses. It is also not that these cards are hard to find. In the market, if you take a proper research, you will find these cards more prevalent that the other cards which are generally available. Moreover, you can easily obtain the cards without facing too many difficulties. Besides, these cards are affordable and can be practically obtained by anyone. However, before laying your hands on these cards, you must have a proper understanding of how these cards function. It has been slow on the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes since Thursday night's meeting with the Red Sox down in Texas. There's not much else that has come out from the media besides more speculation; however, an ex-Oriole has found a new home -- not too far from the one he just left.According to Bill Ladson of the nationals.com website, Baltimore's former, but inconsistent fireballer -- Daniel Cabrera -- has found a home in the Nation's Capital as a member of the Washington Nationals. He and Washington have agreed to a one-year contract, pending a physical.I only wish the best of luck to him. The Nationals may be a place where he gets his career on track, and may figure it out thanks to a change of scenery. There might be a good chance that the Washington Nationals highly regarded pitching coach Randy St. Claire can work some wonders on the tall righty. There's also talk that Baltimore might be looking at right-hander Tim Redding -- who was incidentally not tendered a contract by the W...

Interest rates and reserve requirements

I was asked the following question yesterday in the Indian Current Affairs shout-box."When Federal bank of USA reduces interest rates, what rate exactly is that with context to RBI's? Is it in relation to CRR?"The simple answer to the question is NO. The complicated answer is:US Fed announces two different rates: the discount rate and the federal funds rate. The discount rate is the interest rate charged by the US Fed on the loans it gives to commercial banks. The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which banks lend to each other overnight. The US Fed only prescribes a target federal funds rate.In contrast, the RBI announces only the bank rate. This is the same as the US Fed discount rate. There is no equivalent for the federal funds rate from the RBI. Instead, it announces its repo and reverse repo rates. Market rates (i.e., lendings and borrowings among the market participants) are determined based on these repo and reverse repo rates. Repo rate is the rate the RB...
