Twitter Launches Upgraded Homepage; Shifts Focus To “Interests”
2011-04-06 08:38:00
“Interests” is the new philosophy at Twitter. After upgrading its search which enables users to find users based on interests, the company is now rolling out a new homepage that reads, “Follow your interests: Instant updates from your friends, industry experts, favorite celebrities, and what’s happening around the world,” instead of the old, “Discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world.” Along with changing the pitch to potential new users, Twitter has also simplified the interface of the homepage and is using a new colour scheme. Previously, the company’s homepage was dominated by white and light blue colours. The new homepage features a darker blue colour. The company has also done away with its traditional “top tweets” or “trending topics” and “see who’s here” sections, which used to grab a major are on the home page. Now, the homepage features a bar halfway down the screen with avatars of...

71. Go after what interests you

While reading the morning newspapers a few weeks ago I came across the headline "McCain Is Now Running Just to Stay in Place". If anyone besides me was closely following the American election in 2008 saw the incredibly rough landing of the McCain Campaign as he fumbled, stumbled and bumbled making one fundamental mistake after another, and another. He has long built a public image as a man of solid moral character. He doesn't play dirty, he is a veteran, former P.O.W. that would rather let his fellow P.O.W. colleagues be freed before him, etc. Then when Obama's numbers began to rise he outrightly stated "I am going to play dirty" and followed up with a slew of dirty political ads and misleading accusations. It went against everything he had branded himself as up until that point. But he figured it was a gamble he had to take. It barely got him a bump in the polls, followed by a dip which further torpedoed his campaign down like a sinking anchor. Now that the campaign is over and he ...
Dominance by the Greedy Power Interests?
2009-09-05 22:53:00
When I began my graduate studies first in theology and then legal philosophy in the late 1950s and early 1960s, a reasonable balance existed between management, labor, and governmental powers. Our established churches were focused on social justice — civil rights and poverty reform. And good things emerged ranging from civil rights legislation to Medicare. ...
On health care, White House wooed special interests, bypassed people

In brief, the Administration went after the groups Obama decried in the campaign–and whom he (and his allies) continue to ...

Ranzenhofer & Downstate Interests
2008-10-27 04:07:00
I'm not one to engage in the upstate vs. downstate nonsense because it's idiotic, but when someone does decide to play the "downstate loves you and you love downstate" card against an upstate candidate, it's always refreshing to see whether there's any hypocrisy going on. As one might expect ...
Palin Took on More Entrenched Interests Before Election as Alaska Governor
2008-09-18 21:28:00
. . . than Obama has done in his entire political career. Over half-way through Barack Obama’s, The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream and I can’t find any reference to real reforms he championed or entrenched political interests he challenged. Yet, a quick google search reveals how Sarah Palin forced the resignation of two corrupt Alaska officials from her own party before she even announced her 2006 gubernatorial bid. As chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Commission (AOGCC) in 2003, Palin pushed then-Republican Party of Alaska Chairman Randy Ruedrich to resign from the AOGCC, “a quasi-judicial state agency that regulates oil and gas development. But he was also active in the party.”  His obligations as party chair “included fund raising from the industries he regulated.”  Palin found that to be a conflict of interest. Yup, she stood up to her own state party chair, siding with Alaska Democratic legislators who had object...
Illegal interests on the internet
2008-08-16 10:11:00
It’s a medium that attracts criminal activities like bees to honey; it offers a cloak of anonymity to conmen who take advantage of the gullibility and lack of awareness of lay users; it’s a network that extends its reaches into almost every home in the world and thus offers a wider scope for illegal activities. The Internet has spawned a whole new genre of criminals, from those who violate copyright issues by indulging in the not-so-harmful pastime of downloading and sharing music, videos and other intellectual property to the really nasty ones who traffic in child porn and steal identities. If we were to divide online criminals into categories, we get all sorts: Employees who use the Internet for their own purposes on company time are seen as engaging in illegal activities by their employers, even though they are only surfing the net, chatting or sending email. Those who share and use intellectual property without prior permission. Those who send fraudulent emails purporting ...
Fraud, Greed and Special Interests in the Mortgage Crisis Cost Everybody

Talleyrand & The Interests of the State by Evan Palmer
2008-06-29 01:12:00
It is without dispute that Talleyrand was a clever man, adroit with words and ideas. Even his enemies trusted his diplomatic prowess. He, and by extension France, had much success. As a result, his thoughts and advice still hold sway, particularly, among the ruling classes and their various servants. The quote that is the focus of this article deals with diplomacy and morality: "States do not have friends, they only have interests."While Talleyrand, in the venal ethos of the period, made a fortune in bribes and assorted undisclosed payments, he always seemed to aim for the long-term benefit of France. His vision and love of France allowed him to consider the sensibilities and needs of his neighbours and of France's own citizens. It also gave him an historical perspective that helped him navigate through regimes and revolutions. Through it all he maintained a steadfast notion of what France was and what France needed. When someone of Talleyrand's talent and insight says "States onl...

?I?ll stand up to those special interests.? Really? How?
2008-05-21 23:05:00
We are all going to die. When we do, an industry with 100,000 employees will annually collect about $11 billion in revenue from our survivors, who presumably love us and wish to put us to rest with appropriate pomp and circumstance. Requiescat in pace, although survivors’ wallets might not. Since 2002, after authorities found the remains of 339 people scattered about the grounds of a Georgia crematorium, the funeral industry has been visited by a wave of regulatory activity in many states. Not surprisingly, the funeral industry, a monopoly in many ways, wishes to influence that regulatory activity. It has also sought to influence drafting and revision of federal regulations, most notably the Federal Trade Commission’s “Funeral Rule.” According to a richly detailed and footnoted report by Scott Jordan of the National Institute on Money in State Politics, from 1999 to 2006 the industry has coughed up $6 million in political contributions spread over politica...

Active Interests
2008-04-30 02:42:00
It seems, from the time I came to New England (I am not native to these grey climes), folks have ever taken an overly active interest in my life. This has not has the best of impacts on me, and, in fact, has caused the loss of many things most dear to me.So it is that with great trepidation that I responded to the following inquiry:“Didn’t I see you at the Skating Club of Boston?”Now seeing me there is no great achievement. I am a member of that old club. I am a regular visitor there, and can be seen there every Monday night throughout the year (yes, summer too) refereeing the Monday Night Learn to Skate Programs for the little ones. I also may be seen there on summer Saturdays coaching the hockey. On other occasions, I am there watching my investment scar the hard ice with cold steel. So I was watching when the inquiry targeting that investment brought out and scotched up my defensive “cockles”.“ I saw you talking to Hanako. What do you know about her?”Other than th...
"Special Interests"
2008-04-25 11:17:00
by Jayne Lyn Stahl Barack Obama was right when he said in Pennsylvania, last night, that the next president must take on the corporate special interests that have had their way for generations in this country. But, make no mistake, whether we elect John McCain, Barack Obama, or Hillary Clinton in November, and even if all three miraculously agree to withdraw troops from Iraq, we will be involved in combat somewhere for years to come. Too many people are getting too damn rich from war in this country. So, we can continue to expect to hear more noise coming from Hillary in Tehran's direction, while Barack inches towards Afghanistan, or Pakistan, and McCain, well, he may not be clear about where his target is, but guaranteed he'll come out swinging anyway. Yes, even if he has to outsource his foreign policy, we can rest assured there will be lots of heavy lifting, with a McCain presidency. What's more, regardless of who sits in the White House, we can expect no let up...
Cricketer Sreesanth has interests other than cricket
2008-04-20 21:42:00
Cricketer Sreesanth has interests other than cricket, which is fairly evident from the star’s participation in several TV shows. In fact, Sreesanth had openly stated that he was willing to don the greasepaint but had to forego some good offers from Bollywood, as that required a long-term commitment. When a celebrity makes such an open statement it is sure to evoke some response. And indeed, it did! .The star has now been offered the lead role in a Telugu film that will have four heroines. The storyline, according to our sources, would be something bordering the cricketer’s life story. Sreesanth also made it very clear that he would consider acting assignments that would not hamper his cricketing schedules.

Don?t Interrupt what Interests People ? BE what Interests People!
2008-04-07 04:23:00
I can?t get an idea out of my mind that I think is profound for this social media age. Recently I blogged about giving your customers and prospects the opportunity and the permission to start a dialog with your brand. Here?s the important follow-up to that idea ? don?t do it with banner ads or other roadblocks!Create content that doesn?t interrupt users as they explore what they?re interested in. Instead, create the very content that is what they?re interested in so, by definition, they are interacting with your brand. You will see this more and more as marketers create better and better content rivaling that of traditional media houses. A great example of this is Greg the Architect, which is both a blog series and a video series. It is so in tune with TIBCO?s SOA product that it has become a rallying cry within the organization. It also has the side benefit of positioning the company?s brand perfectly against the competition. This is a great example of pull content rather than push c...

Respecting other's value and interests
2008-03-19 10:50:00
There are some people who think that their interests, values and beliefs are always superior than other's and they do not care about andrespect other people's interests. In fact, these people are not liked by many and I personally also do not like such persons.image by kris I think whaever may be my interest, that is very important for me. So is important your any type of interest for you. You may want to be a fashion-designer. But, that may not play any importance for me. Similarly, I may like that girl of the next class whom you even don't want to see face and appear in front of her. Here, one important thing I try to follow in my life is to respect other's interest whether that is important for me or not. This is very helpful in making your relationship with the person you are with more strong and develop trust. By respecting their values and interests, they feel that you are important for them and you take their care and you do not understimate thier power. Of course, we can...

Bill Clinton Sells Out American Human Rights Interests For A Buck - Big Sca
2008-01-31 09:39:00
Bill Clinton Sells Out American Human Rights Interest For A Buck - Big Scandal In NYT It seems that in 2007 former President Bill Clinton was so interested in scoring a big donation for The Clinton Foundation that he overlooked human right violations in the home country of the donor, Kazakhstan, just to score $31 million. What's the take away? Simple. It seems former President Clinton use the White House and the taxpayer to forge deals that run counter to American human rights interests; this is the most recent example and he may do it again. And does a person who falls asleep during a Martin Luther King day speech by none other than MLK III really care about human rights, anyway? What can co-owners do to protect interests in home? -Singapore

What can co-owners do to protect interests in home? -Singapore Lie Chin Chin Managing Director Characterist LLC (incorporating Lie Kee Pong Partnership) Q I AM 49 and single. I live with my parents, who are in their 70s, and my youngest sister in a three-storey terrace house bought in 1997. The four of us bought the house for $904,000 under a tenants-in-common agreement. We each chipped in about $250,000. The initial 20 per cent down payment of about $180,000 was paid by my parents. At the time of purchase, my sister was unable to finance her full share of $250,000, so my parents paid $100,000 for her. Her total contribution was only about $150,000. My sister and I each took up a 25-year loan of $60,000, using Central Provident Fund (CPF) monies. Combined, our outstanding loan commitments come to $95,000. Now, my sister, who is 40, is getting married. After her marriage, can she and her spouse move in with us against our wishes? If so, can the law protect the interests of both my pa...
