Cisco, Microsoft Resume Unified Communications Battle

Ali vs. Frazier. Yankees vs. Red Sox (well, not this year...). Cisco vs. Microsoft. There's nothing like a showdown between two titans who love to brawl. By now, you know Cisco and Microsoft have high hopes for the unified communications market. In fact, Microsoft will finally launch its unified products next week. But Cisco won't be standing still.
Web Services no magic bullet for .NET / Java Interop
2007-06-25 23:47:00
On the Microsoft side of the equation, most developers and architects are aware that you can “Web Service-ize” almost everything possibly with the exclusion of passing DataSets. I always assumed that simple types are best, and collections of those simple types should be fine. Composing those simple types and collections into structures, and structures of ...

.NET/Java Interop is/not a reason for Web-Services
2007-06-02 23:30:00
If you follow Arnon's and Udi Dahan's blogs carefully you may find interesting debates and disagrees between the two. Usually Udi is more academic while Arnon is more pragmatic. So this time they agree that using webservices for .NET-Java interop is not SOA, however they disagree whether doing so is all evil or not. Udi points that if you need Java/.NET interop, don't use webservices instead he is directing us to use some interop/bridging products instead of using webservices ("The only problem is that in order for things to work right, they really must have a chatty interface, and flow transaction context between these ?services?, and all the other things I describe as anti-patterns.") While Arnon agrees that using webservices for this purpose does not meet SOA and may actually meet some ugly anti-patterns, however, it is not so bad idea to wrap a Java software by webservice in order to be used by .NET application. ("However, using Web-services does not automatically mean that ...
.NET/Java Interop is not a reason for SOA
2007-05-28 22:14:00
I see this all too often. A company has some legacy (read “good”) code in one platform (let’s just use Java for this example). This company has now decided to standardize on the other platform (Microsoft’s happy). The company doesn’t want to throw away and/or rewrite the assets they already have from the previous platform. What do ...
Top 7 Highlights from Juniper?s J-Partner Summit
2007-05-23 16:48:00
The VAR Guy must be getting a little bit older. He's in Las Vegas this week for Interop as well as Juniper's J-Partner Summit. It's the perfect opportunity to blog (or gamble ... or worse) all night -- and sleep all day. But instead, he's been tied up in meetings with technology companies. Yes, he still has to post details of his exclusive interview with Juniper CEO Scott Kriens from May 21. And he also has several Interop meetings to recap for you. To get started, here are seven highlights from Juniper's partner summit.

Apple and Cisco iPhones interoperability not just a myth

Cisco gets its interoperability, Apple gets its iPhone trademark
2007-02-22 17:52:03
It’s done for the Apple and Cisco lawsuit. The result is both companies would use the same trademark — as expected. Now the settlement done, the battle for interoperability starts and would why not put the not yet available Apple iPhone under risk. Cisco yesterday acknowledges a security flaw in several versions of its IP phones of the Unified IP Conference Station. The list of unprotected phones includes the 7906G, 7911G, 7941G, 7961G, 7970G and 7971G. While those models are speaker phones specially designed for conference rooms, hacker might be interested to break into the Apple iPhone through backdoors implement to set interoperability with Cisco iPhones.

Cisco wants the IPhone to iPhone interoperability
2007-01-12 16:51:03
On Flickr, people are exchanging the iPhone. Not the really, a representative picture to print, cut and mount oneself to get a paper iPhone. Just to patient six more months. In the business life, it’s not that fun. Apple sued by Cisco. The WSJ in a today’s write-up explains how and why Cisco went to court against Apple, not for money, but for the interoperability of the same-named handhelds. For its part, Apple has at least two counter tactics. One: Try to show Cisco didn’t adequately use or protect the iPhone trademark. Two: Convince the judge that Apple iPhone means cellphone, whereas Cisco iPhone means VoIP Skype phone, and that no confusion could be introduced in the consumers’ mind. To follow this scenario, Cisco iPhone might also bump into another iPhone, used by US VoIP provider Nuvio for its Internet telephony service.
