Cluster ban treaty: 'interoperability' in context
2008-06-03 16:11:00 There has been a lot of media coverage of last week's agreement in Dublin on a Cluster Munition Convention - a groundbreaking agreement that prohibits cluster munitions that "cause unacceptable harm to civilians".Some of this media coverage has been thoughtful, measured and insightful. Indeed, some journalists, especially a number from Japan (for instance, see here), have followed the Oslo and UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) processes closely for many months now and are well aware of their many nuances. Certain other media coverage has been less thoughtful, and sometimes even misguided.I guess this is to be expected when overworked journos are under pressure to produce copy quickly for the general public, which captures the Dublin negotiation's essential elements. But it's hard to communicate something accurately when you don't properly understand it, especially on the vexed issue of so-called interoperability (Article 21 on "relations with states not parties...

Instant Messaging Interoperability Nears
2008-04-21 05:05:00 Sadly, the title to this post is identical to the title of a PCWorld article published in 2001. Although many people thought that we were close to IM interoperability back then, we still aren’t there even in 2008. Why not? Before I answer that, and before I explain why I believe that we’re finally close, let’s cover a little bit of background. What is IM interoperability? IM interoperability is the ability to send or receive an IM, or use other IM features such as online status, across different IM networks. IM is the only important communication service that isn’t yet interoperable. For example, an AIM (AOL) user can’t IM a Yahoo! user, and an MSN Messenger user can’t IM or call a Skype user (or even add that user to their buddy list). Other communication networks that are interoperable include telephone and email. For example, you can call anybody on any cellular or landline network simply by dialing a number. Similarly, you can now (but not always in the past) us...

News : Microsoft's latest interoperability pledge: How free is 'open' now?
2008-02-23 03:16:00 No move by Microsoft to share information with its competitors will ever be taken at face value, and certainly yesterday's new Interoperability Principle will come under very close scrutiny. Is this the opening of the floodgates the EC has been demanding? In incremental, measured, if slow steps, Microsoft has made some efforts to comply with directives from the European Commission to make its software and protocols more interoperable with products from other manufacturers. Yesterday, the company surrendered one more boundary between its interoperability policy and the EC's dream situation, making a huge chunk of the information it published in response to the EC's order available to developers free of charge."We're announcing that developers will not need to take a license, or pay a royalty, or other fee to access any of that information," revealed CEO Steve Ballmer yesterday (according to Microsoft's transcript). "As an immediate first step to apply the principles today we're ...

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access"Wimax"
2008-01-11 07:51:00 WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. It is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, which is also called WirelessMAN. The name WiMAX was created by the WiMAX Forum, which was formed in June 2001 to promote conformance and interoperability of the standard. The forum describes WiMAX as "a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL."The terms "fixed WiMAX", "mobile WiMAX", "802.16d" and "802.16e" are frequently used incorrectly. Correct definitions are:802.16dStrictly speaking, 802.16d has never existed as a standard. The standard is correctly called 802.16-2004 and was developed by the IEEE 802.16 Task Group d. Therefore the project was called 802.16d, but the standard never was. However, since this standard is frequent...

Tech titans seek virtual world interoperability
2007-10-12 16:53:00 From CNET: By Daniel Terdiman Staff Writer, CNET News.com Published: October 12, 2007, 4:00 AM PDT Welcome to virtual world interoperability: a new era where the many previously walled-garden virtual worlds can share content, currency and even identity, all in the guise of making life easier for end users and, ideally, for enterprises trying to leverage the Second Lifes of the world for businesses purposes. Unfortunately for those who like that notion of interoperability, it’s not going to be happening just yet. But a group of representatives from some of the biggest and most powerful technology companies on earth–including IBM, Cisco Systems, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Google and Sony, as well as from leading virtual-world developers like Second Life publisher Linden Lab, the Multiverse Network, Mindark and others–is hoping to change that in the not too distant future. The first really public shot in this battle was fired Wednesday when Linden Lab and IBM anno...

2007-09-04 23:37:00 Paradial connectivity solution enables PortaOne services to work automatically and securely across firewalls, NATs, and web proxies.Coquitlam, British Colombia and Oslo, Norway, September 4, 2007 - PortaOne and Paradial announced that Paradial's award winningRealTunnel(c) firewall and NAT traversal product is interoperable with PortaOne software billing and softswitch solutions (PortaSwitch) for ITSPs. The solution allows PortaOne customers to deploy IP-media services with no worries about firewalls, NAT devices and web proxies that otherwise prevent end-users from accessing communication services. The end-user experience of IP-media services, such as VoIP, is often disappointing due to the lack of connectivity resulting from firewalls and NAT devices interfering with SIP and H.323 traffic. The interoperable PortaOne and RealTunnel solution allow SIP and H.323 solutions to work across any firewall, NAT and web proxy without the need to reconfigure those devices. QoS is maintained...

Aren't web services meant to solve interoperability problems?
2007-07-03 21:17:00 Somebody has written a web service using JBoss. I'm trying to call it from .NET 1.1 or, heaven forbid, the MS SOAP toolkit. And neither of them can call any operations that have parameters, which kind of restricts what we can do with it. I guess one solution might be to have methods called method1(), method2(), method3() etc all the way up to MAXINT. Doesn't seem a great idea. Or perhaps an ASP.NET 2 web service could call the JBoss web service and expose the functionality as another web service? Yeh it's daft, but it might just work. So could it be the folks telling us web services were the panacea for all our interoperability problems were actually just snake oil salesmen? Surely not...

Cisco wants the IPhone to iPhone interoperability
2007-01-12 16:51:03 On Flickr, people are exchanging the iPhone. Not the really, a representative picture to print, cut and mount oneself to get a paper iPhone. Just to patient six more months. In the business life, it’s not that fun. Apple sued by Cisco. The WSJ in a today’s write-up explains how and why Cisco went to court against Apple, not for money, but for the interoperability of the same-named handhelds. For its part, Apple has at least two counter tactics. One: Try to show Cisco didn’t adequately use or protect the iPhone trademark. Two: Convince the judge that Apple iPhone means cellphone, whereas Cisco iPhone means VoIP Skype phone, and that no confusion could be introduced in the consumers’ mind. To follow this scenario, Cisco iPhone might also bump into another iPhone, used by US VoIP provider Nuvio for its Internet telephony service.
