2008-09-05 16:32:00

2008-05-26 19:30:00
Shares of the largest U.S. brewer, Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc. (BUD), maker of such iconic brands as Budweiser and Bud Light, shot up more than 7% on Friday on news that the Belgium-based InBev NV was considering a $46 billion takeover bid. European beermaker InBev is the world?s largest brewer. Its stable of beers includes such well-known names as Stella Artois, Beck?s and Brahma. “The two companies would represent an excellent geographic fit,” Wim Hoste, an analyst at KBC Securities, part of KBC Groep NV in Brussels, said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg News. “The black hole for InBev is the [United…SHARETHIS.addEntr-y({ title: "Global Beer Titan InBev to Make $46 Billion Offer for No. 1 U.S. Brewer, Anheuser-Busch", url: "http://jutiagroup.com/2008/05/-26/global-beer-titan-inbev-to-m-ake-46-billion-offer-for-no-1-u-s-brewer-anheuser-busch/" });
Cashing in on Commodities: Lumber & Paper Mills Struggle as Timber Stands T
2008-05-26 15:48:00
There?s a classic squeeze going on in the timber markets right now. As you might expect, the U.S housing slump is reducing demand for finished lumber. Meanwhile, timber, pulpwood, and paper prices are rising worldwide - but curiously, profit margins are eroding. What?s up with that? The global commodity boom has created a supply/demand price imbalance between the four distinct industry sectors that rely on timber as a raw material. In fact, that imbalance is a huge mismatch. And savvy investors may be able to wring substantial returns from the winner. You see, timber companies have shrewdly maintained monopoly-like control of…SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Cashing in on Commodities: Lumber & Paper Mills Struggle as Timber Stands Tall", url: "http://jutiagroup.com/2008/05/-26/cashing-in-on-commodities-lu-mber-paper-mills-struggle-as-ti-mber-stands-tall/" });
Investors Leaving India?s Market Aren?t Thinking Long-Term
2008-05-13 19:38:00
Of the emerging BRIC (Brazil, Russia, China and India) nations, India?s stocks are priced the cheapest as government measures to curb inflation have turned away investors, Bloomberg News reported using its own compiled data. Making matters worse, India has the fewest natural commodities of the four-nation bloc - meaning it?s paying a premium to provide for its soaring population. Year-to-date, the price-to-earnings ratio for India?s market has dropped 33%. And for the first time since 2000, foreign investors turned net sellers, Bloomberg reported. Last Friday, India?s government released data that showed that the country?s annual inflation rate rose to a near four-year…SHARETHIS.addEn-try({ title: "Investors Leaving India?s Market Aren?t Thinking Long-Term", url: "http://jutiagroup.com/2008/05/-13/investors-leaving-india%e2%8-0%99s-market-aren%e2%80%99t-thi-nking-long-term/" });
With the New Russian President Vowing to Steer a Steady Ship, U.S. Investor
2008-05-09 18:00:00
New Russian President Dmitry Medvedev wants better links with Europe. Judging by the performance of outgoing President Vladimir Putin, Europe should beware: The so-called “links” he?s seeking may resemble those used to chain together prisoners in the Gulag. On the other hand - though it?s admittedly unpleasant to say so - there?s a point at which the effects of high oil prices are so great that in the short run they far outweigh one?s distaste for the thuggish Russian regime. And at $123 a barrel, we may be at that point. Politically, Russia has pretty much reverted to the pre-1991 Soviet system. Today,…SHARETHIS.addEntry-({ title: "With the New Russian President Vowing to Steer a Steady Ship, U.S. Investors Can Look to Profit", url: "http://jutiagroup.com/2008/05/-09/with-the-new-russian-preside-nt-vowing-to-steer-a-steady-shi-p-us-investors-can-look-to-prof-it/" });

Four Trends for 2008
2007-12-27 17:09:00
Mark Hines, a manager at Northern Trust Investments, is looking forward into 2008 and see's four trends as both risk factors and opportunities for 2008: 1) The Return of the Day Trader: The volatility we've been seeing in the second half of 2007 is unlike any since the technology bubble. For example, the VIX has actually peeked its head above 30 several times in 2007. The short term traders love the volatility as it returns to levels where they can make a living trading in and out of positions on a daily basis. 2) Market Segment Mean

Three Beaten-Down Stocks at Year-End Bargains
2007-12-26 16:12:00
Jerry Helzner points to investors that have done very well for themselves by buying beaten-down stocks just as the year comes to an end and tax selling ceases to be a factor. This year should be no exception. I agree with Jerry that buying "beaten downs" at year-end comes down to a single major decision, Is the stock way down because of a temporary problem or perception, or is the long-term future of the company in question. If it is the former, you can be a big winner. Here are three stocks that Jerry thinks will do well in the comin

Stock Investing vs. Gambling
2007-12-24 08:37:00
"The man who begins to speculate in stocks with the intention of making a fortune usually goes broke, whereas the man who trades with a view of getting good interest on his money sometimes gets rich." ~ Charles Dow, 1901 Phil of PhilStockWorld.com brings up a very important topic. Many people liken investing in the stock market to that of gambling. While you can gamble in the stock market, it does not mean that investing is always a Gamble. "When you allow the whims of the market moment to dictate your 'investing' decisions, then y

I have provided the 6 attributes by Graham, but check out Freund Investing to see their changes to his methodology based on the current market. 1. Price-to-book (P/B) ratio (also known as Net Asset Value and Net Tangible Assets) of less than 1.5. 2. Earnings per share (EPS) should have grown by 33% in the past 10 years. 3. I recently stumbled upon Prieur du Plessis's Investment Postcards from Cape Town and I am glad I did. In his most recent post, he wrote on what appears to be the end of the bull market and a very visible sight to the coming recession. "Not since buying my first stocks in 1968 have I experienced the stock market outlook to be as murky as we are experiencing today, Prieur said." He points to a number of observations from a long-term graph of the S&P 500 Index: ? The MACD indicator (bottom section of graph) has just given a sell si

December Monthly Review
2007-12-19 18:24:00
Another victorious month snatched from the jaws of defeat! The bizarre rally leading up to the Fed meeting was quickly negated, and we had another month with no losing trades - and more importantly, another month in which we handily beat our 10% target return. We're really pleased with our performance this quarter, especially given the market turmoil. Hopefully these results will help disprove the naysayers out there who (erroneously) claim that market-neutral trading is only suitable for quiet markets.
Making A List, Checking It Twice
2007-12-19 17:05:00
With the Fed's decision to only cut interest rates by 0.25%, we should all be reminded that it is certainly not wise to buy all at once. No matter how great your stock is, there are other factors out there in the market that could affect your stocks performance, even if the company is raking in the money. What you need to realize is the difference between a stock that has been taken down along with the market, and one that truly does deserve to go down based on it's future earnings and fundamentals.
