Granite Staters head to the polls for the second major event of the 2008 U.S. Presidential election - the first using the good old secret ballot approach to democracy. However if, like me, your still a little confused about just what goes on in the high school gymnasiums of a ...

Tin blobs, Iowa caucuses, Presidential election

My faith in the universe has been restored. I found the Finnish tin blob! I see this as a good sign - a sign of a happy, productive, and seek-and-ye-shall-find year.Bring it.I'm hungry as the dickin's (?) (dicken's). (Where the hell did that saying come from?)Here is a photo I took of Daisy in Oregon. Why? Because I like it:In other random news:My parents were ROCKSTARS! on CSPAN on Tuesday night. Perhaps you saw my dad in all of his Iowa caucus splendor? This is a photo of him in his office to jog your memory. Yes, there is train paraphernalia (this is what the spell checker told me, but I don't believe it) everywhere. I watched the Presidential debates last night. I love this shit. At one time I was a political science major because I love this shit. The debates did nothing to sway me. If anything, I'm less enthused by some of the candidates I thought I might support. It has been confirmed, however, that Mitt Romney is Satan.I will definitely not vote for a Republican. Take th...

I haven’t been following politics lately because I already feel informed of what is going on. As usual Mike Gravel is always excluded from talking and lately from participating in the Iowa Caucuses. Surprisingly, Hillary Clinton didn’t win at Iowa but it is no surprise that she is in the lead and to me it ...
Huckabee and Obama Dominate In Iowa
2008-01-04 07:06:00
Sen. Barack Obama swept to victory in the Iowa caucuses Thursday night, pushing Hillary Rodham Clinton to third place. Mike Huckabee rode a wave of support from evangelical Christians to win the opening round among Republicans in the 2008 campaign for the White House. Complete returns showed the first-term lawmaker gaining 38 percent support from Iowa ...
Politics: Iowa Caucuses Claims Winners and Victims
2008-01-04 06:38:00
Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee cleaned up today at the Iowa caucuses, the first real bid for power on the campaign trail. The results came as a surprise for Clinton supporters as Edwards took the runner-up position and the Clinton campaign trailed in third. Iowa is the first of the string of ...

I participated in the Iowa caucuses tonight in support of Barack Obama, who blew away Edwards, Clinton, and the rest of the field. I caucused for the first time in 2004 for Howard Dean, and both experiences were intriguing and fun. This time around I was "elected" (I use quotes because it's no big deal, ...

at this very moment, I am listening to the victory speeches of obama and huckabee. it truly amazes me to see how far a person can reach in a lifetime. listening to these 2 gives me hope that america will do well in the future. although my personal vote will go to ron paul, I think that whomever get elected, america will be ok.back at the ranch..it was another night in the lobby. I met 3 new people last night. let us all welcome - doctor john, nickolas cage, and mercury man.it was pretty much a mellow night. no feverish debates. some of the lounge lizards are talking about their upcoming trip to china. others could be found discussing plans to go to the philippines.roll call - timberwolf, the barber, the analog man, long time jessie, howling howie, the sarge, mike jagger, the watcher, craig constantine, captain kirk, the guru, the teaser, the stunner, sweetheart, the tattoo man, honda, toyota, hawaiian bill, kilroy the stud, clint eastwood, jacques cousteau.on the agenda toda...
The Iowa Caucuses Turn The Volume Up On Momentum
2008-01-04 04:37:00
The Iowa Caucus saw record numbers with nearly 200,000 reportedly turning out eager to offer support for their candidate.  Each candidate possesses different consequences of Iowa, however we have seen so clearly in this campaign the value of momentum.  Iowa has spurred that to even greater lengths; you can feel it tonight.  It will be mandatory ...
Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee win Iowa caucuses
2008-01-04 04:11:00
Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee won a competitive race in the Iowa caucuses today. This does not mean that they get their parties official nomination, but it is a huge edge for them in this race to the White House. John Edwards won second place for the Democrats, and Mitt Romney won second for the Republicans.

Iowa Caucuses have spoken!
2008-01-04 04:03:00
Gentlemen, start your engines!!!!! The Iowa Caucuses, as unconventional as they may be, play an important role in identifying the front runners of each political party and this year election year, the people in the red state have chosen Mike “no-one-knew-who-i-was-2--months-ago” Huckabee as their Republican candidate of choice, and Barack “I might just become the first black president of the United States” Obama. Personally,  I don’t think that Huckabee is much of a surprise - Iowa is chalk full of good Christian folks, and who better to represent them than an Evangelical minister? Obama, on the other hand, is a huge surprise and one that I think is indicative of the fact that America wants someone they find trustworthy and genuine over someone with exceptional experience. It is also nice to see that Hillary was unable to continue steamrolling - bye bye Hillary!!!! Exciting stuff indeed! Onward to New Hampshire! -Hoser

The Iowa Caucuses ? What are the Results and what do they mean?
2008-01-04 03:34:00
Update 4.30 GMT How can these results be interpreted? Apart from the big disappointments for Romney and Clinton, the way Obama has won was the revelation of the Iowa caucus. Iowa Caucuses Tonight Important for Candidates on Both Sides
2008-01-03 19:22:00
After months of campaigning and $40 million of dollars of spending (figure based on Iowa ads alone), a major first step in the nomination process will take place tonight in Iowa.Iowa is especially critical for the Democratic nominee where a majority of candidates who have won their have gone on to win the nomination of the party. Edwards would have a significant struggle ahead if he were to loose in Iowa.Edwards is polling in a rather distant third in New Hampshire and a loss in Iowa would make it much more difficult for him to rebound there.According to a Real Clear Politics poll, Clinton currently leads in New Hampshire with 33.5 percent of likely voters, Obama has 26.3 percent, and Edwards 18.3 percent. The New Hampshire primary is only 5 days after the Iowa caucuses and the winner in Iowa will certainly get a bump in New Hampshire as well as nationally. After Kerry?s come from behind win in 2004 he got a 20 point bump in national polls after winning the Iowa caucus. While this y...

Iowa Caucuses Ignore The Needs of Our Pets!

OK, lady. Time to step away from the keyboard and take a wee break. Chelle Delaney of New Mexico has penned an opinion piece for the Clovis News Journal (woah, big name in news) lamenting the fact that no major presidential candidates are stumping with their pets, and that none of them are addressing the concerns of those of the four-legged (Or winged! Or scaled!) variety. She calls for the formation of a new, independent political party: The Pro Pet Party.Get real!Don't get me wrong. I'm all for pets. Love 'em. But is this something that the Fed'ral Gummit needs to be concerned with? Do we need federal mandates and controls over local animal shelters? Just think about how many things the feds do well, and I think you'll agree that it's in the interest of all pets that Washington stays out of the micromanagement of local pet issues (as in actual dog-and-cat pet issues, not merely "pet projects").Am I wrong, here?

How the Iowa Caucuses Work
2008-01-03 16:16:00
Today marks the beginning of the presidential election primaries with the Iowa Caucuses. It's democrary in action where common, ordinairy folks get to cast ballots for representatives who will later go to the district, state, and national conventions where candidates will be elected--or annointed--by their individual national parties this summer. If that sounds convoluted, well, it is. Here's a further breakdown of how the Caucuses in Iowa work:How the Iowa caucuses work Neighbors sip coffee, tout their candidatesThe Associated Pressupdated 3:07 p.m. PT, Sat., Jan. 10, 2004IOWA CITY, Iowa - Pat Kennedy expects the coffee to be hot and the passions to be strong when she opens her home to Democrats eager to caucus and begin choosing a nominee for president.“I don’t think we’ll be getting into big, heated arguments, but I expect people to stand their ground,” said Kennedy, a rookie precinct chairwoman in Corning, Iowa. “When people first get here, we’ll read some letter...

Senator Clinton seems to have a habit of attracting political supporters who can't seem to say the right thing, or more to the point, they say the wrong thing at the wrong time. It's three days until the Iowa Caucuses, yet Ohio Governor Ted Strickland can't help but slam the Iowa Caucus process as undemocratic. Like his comments are going to make them so? Read the rest below! Strickland, stumping for Clinton, gets a chilly reception in Iowa Sunday, December 30, 2007 11:12 PMBy Joe HallettThe Columbus Dispatch DES MOINES ?Gov. Ted Strickland's viewpoint that Iowa is the wrong place to begin the presidential nominating process caused some angst today in the campaign of Hillary Clinton and drew the ire of some voters here.Despite saying that Iowa does not deserve its first-in-the-nation status, Strickland has made three trips to the state on behalf of the Democratic New York senator, showing up again Saturday, with no advance notice, to join Clinton for several campaign ral...

Clinton, Huckabee bring out the big guns as Iowa caucuses near
2007-12-27 03:54:00
With eight days to go until the Iowa caucuses, Hillary Clinton and Mike Huckabee brought out the big guns. But only Huckabee shot anything. Clinton's weapon of choice was her husband, the former president, who in a packed high school auditorium here echoed the refrain all the candidates have been furiously embracing, saying his wife was a proven agent of change. "Hillary has an unbroken record of making decisions that have had a positive change in other people's lives," Bill Clinton told the crowd of 500 people. Meanwhile, Republican front-runner Huckabee took veiled jabs at his chief rival, Mitt Romney, while bringing reporters along on a pheasant hunt on a snowy, windswept Iowa plain. A regular hunter, Huckabee then shot a pheasant. "Don't get in my way," the former Arkansas governor joked. "This is what happens." Clinton's deployment of her husband, along with their daughter Chelsea and former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, revealed how high the stakes have become as the candidate...

Iowa Caucuses As Smoke-Filled Room
2007-10-08 14:58:00
A minister, priest and rabbi walk into a 4-H club . . . I’ll eat my straw boater if it turns out that the Iowa caucuses next January play a decisive role in determining who the Republican presidential sacrificial lamb will be, let alone who the Democrats nominate to be the next president. This is because some candidates — averse to shoveling snow off of potential voters’ driveways in Sioux City or Des Moines — may avoid the caucuses altogether. . . . No, that’s not the real reason at all. It’s because not even 10 percent of eligible Iowa voters will show up at their local caucus, fewer than the number of media pundits who already are filling their drool cups in anticipation of this overhyped but underwhelming quadrennial event. Well, I guess I’d better start munching on that hat, because the Iowa caucuses — with their quaint winning over one voter at a time charm — will again play an outsided role in the 2008 campaign. How did th...
