John McCain Wins Second Iowa Straw Poll
2007-09-10 15:00:00
Late Sunday night the McCain campaign had a major victory as the Arizona Senator received a much needed win at an unprecedented 'second' Iowa straw poll. During the days leading up to the vote, McCain was campaigning hard as many residents of Des Moines reported seeing the 71 year old posting fliers throughout the city asking his constituents to attend what he called the "Real Iowa Straw Poll." Earlier in August McCain, due to lack of campaign resources, opted to skip the traditional poll, but that didn't stop him from using his opponents tactics the second time around. Whereas it is traditional for candidates to pay the entrance fee and transportation costs for voters coming to the poll in an effort to turn out support, McCain's fliers offered free hot dogs, and moonshine to all participants. Overall 12 homeless men and former president Jimmy Carter came out for the event, and found that McCain was the only Republican candidate participating in the poll. "I inv...

Iowa Straw Poll: Romney and Huckabee Winners
2007-08-12 08:16:00
Yahoo! News reports that Governor Mitt Romney won the Iowa straw poll as expected. As I wrote yesterday, a mere victory would not be enough for Romney: he would have to win bigtime. And he did. All in all, he got (almost) 32% of the votes, which is almost twice as much as the runner-up. The runner-up is Governor Mike Huckabee. He surprised - he won, in total, 18% of the votes, which is not bad for him - to say the least. In fact, it is a great result for the former Governor of Arkansas. He has now truly put himself on the agenda. The logical result: both he and Mitt Romney will get more attention in the media. Congratulations to both. All in all, these two are probably my favorite Republican candidates - although I also greatly respect Ron Paul. Mitt Romney is very experienced, very knowledgeable and a great leader. He is in many ways the opposite of George W. Bush. He does not make decisions based on intuition. He makes decisions based on arguments and a good look at the facts. He ...

US Republican Presidential Candidates Compete in Iowa Straw Poll
2007-08-11 15:35:00
VOA News article link US Republican Presidential Candidates Compete in Iowa Straw Poll By Greg Flakus Des Moines, Iowa10 August 2007U.S. Republican Party candidates will face off in Iowa Saturday in a non-binding straw poll, in which Iowa citizens come together at an auditorium to vote. This is not an official election and has been described as a beauty contest, but it can have a significant impact on which candidates will make a strong showing in the Iowa caucus, which is usually held in January. But, as VOA's Greg Flakus reports from Des Moines, however, nothing is certain this year. The Iowa State Fair opened here this week and amid the carnival rides and livestock shows, presidential candidates are on display. Some of the candidates are national celebrities who draw big crowds and others, like former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, speak to however many people they can gather round."Tomorrow is the straw poll in Iowa. After you have spent most of your time and the biggest ...
Pundits watching Ron Paul in Iowa straw poll
2007-08-11 06:03:00
There have been a couple of interesting pieces this week, one of which ran in the New York Times today, that pointed out how many political observers, including yours truly, will be watching the performance of Rep. Ron Paul in the Iowa straw poll on Saturday to see if he can translate his Internet support into people casting a ballot in person.

US Political news this week is almost exclusively focused on this Saturday’s Iowa Straw Poll. Tancredo to Drop Out if He Does Not Finish in Top Four in Iowa Straw Poll
2007-07-01 05:17:00
In an example of setting pointedly lower standards than the Tommy Thompson campaign, an aide to Tom Tancredo said that the candidate will drop out of the race if he does finish at least fourth in the August 11 poll. Right Wing World wrote on June 28: Republican presidential contender Tom Tancredo will soon quit the 2008 race if his support in a key test doesn’t measure up to other candidates, a campaign aide said. The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Tancredo would concentrate on being re-elected to Congress if he doesn’t finish in the top four at the Iowa Republican Party’s Ames Straw Poll on August 11. The Times-Republican reported today Tancredo’s reiteration about staying in the straw poll, but he did not mention any conditions that would cause him to run for re-election to the House instead of election for the presidency. Tancredo’s success or failure at Ames will likely be defined by his ability to galvanize those who agree with him on i...

Update: McCain is Also Not Participating in the Iowa Straw Poll
2007-06-07 04:43:00
McCain today also announced that he is pulling out of the event; Romney will participate though. The NYT Caucus Blog has a good explanation of why candidates don’t want to participate: The Ames straw poll started in 1979, initially conceived as a way to raise money for the caucuses. It has been criticized as a poor test ...

Giuliani to Skip Iowa Straw Poll
2007-06-06 18:48:00
In what could be the first of an avalanche, Rudy Giuliani announced that he would be skipping the Iowa Straw Poll this August. He simply was too far behind in organization to McCain and Romney to really be able to compete in the poll. Who this really hurts are the second and third tier ...
