Santorum Won Iowa?
2012-01-06 21:01:00 Rick Santorum may not only have won Iowa by catapulting from nowhere into national prominence but may have, in fact, actually won the Caucus! Edward True, 28, of Moulton, said he helped count the votes and jotted the results down on a piece of paper to post to his Facebook page. When he checked to ...

The Ramble for 1-4-12: Iowa
2012-01-05 02:24:00 Oneanta, NY- I’m set to deliver at Latham, NY in the morning. Sorry for the long time between posting a Ramble, but the internet connectivity is an issue again. It’s frustrating because I don’t understand WHY. (shrug) Only one topic, today…. because frankly, it’s all I’ve had time to follow: Iowa:Thanks to Art Smith for adding notes directly from Iowa. I have a few thoughts of my own.The first being that anyone being shocked at Rick Santorum doing well, there, seems silly to me at least. Iowa voters are values voters and that’s one plkace where a large part of Santorum’s strengths lie. Whatever else might be said, Santorum’s nearly beating out Romney at least suggests that there’s problem with Romney in those areas where Santorum has strength. Romney is clearly weak, on family values issues. And regardless of him talking a good game, now, his record is weak as dishwater on most conservative issues. I note wit...

Mitt Romney Wins Iowa Caucus But Newt Gingrich Goes Nuclear
2012-01-04 23:23:00 The Iowa Caucus is over and Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is the hair-thin-razor winner. Romney beat the man called Richard John “Rick” Santorum by just 8 total votes: 30,015 to 30,007 – that’s it. But even with this, Mitt Romney thinks he won the Super Bowl and that his Iowa Caucus victory is a (Read More...)
Romney wins Iowa (by 8 votes), Newt far behind
2012-01-04 14:15:00 With 30,015 votes (6 shy of his tally four years ago), Mitt Romney edged out Rick Santorum by 8 votes to win the Iowa caucuses last night. Seems that late deciders broke for the former Pennsylvania Senator. Ron Paul came in third, roughly 4,000 votes behind the frontrunners. Newt Gingrich who once led polls in ...

Cenk Uygur On Current TV?s Iowa Caucus Coverage: Says ?Uh? Too Much

Iowa Sighs With Relief!
2012-01-04 08:48:00 [Art Smith is an occasional contributor to BitsBlog. Art publishes The Conservative Reader, a conservative commentary and news site. Art lives in the Central Iowa area and spent two years as the Communications Director for the Polk County Republican Party of Iowa.] On the whole, politically involved Iowans take their First-In-The-Nation moniker seriously. But even the move engaged activists have to join with the rest of the state in saying “Thank goodness that’s over!”. And truly only because being first comes with a significant price. Christmas/New Year’s with family just gets a little annoying with the phone calls (my dear wife kept score of how many calls we got from each campaign), and the constant, substantively negative, ads on the radio and television. All of that on top of the fact that many Iowans actually don’t need all of the extra whoop-de-doo because they are already meeting candidates, researching them, talking to their neighbors...

A historical thought on significance of Iowa caucuses
2012-01-04 03:50:00 In 1980, George H.W. Bush edged out Ronald Reagan in the Iowa caucuses 32% to 30%. He lost the nomination to Reagan. Eight years later, after serving seven years as Reagan’s Vice President, H.W. finished third with 19% of the vote behind Bob Dole who snagged 37% of the vote and Pat Robertson who snagged ...

However, I have decided not to offer an opinion at his time, rather I will solicit your views on the recent disasters which have left thousands homeless, hundreds dead and an enormous task ahead for those affected. I will say this, though, there are some very valid questions contained in internet email and should illustrate some of the thinking that exists within our society today. Is it right or is it wrong?

Drunken Pawlenty Worker At Iowa Family's Door at 3AM
2011-04-08 17:33:00 -By Warner Todd Huston For some unexplained reason a drunken campaign worker for the Tim Pawlenty Presidential Exploratory Committee was found at a Polk County, Iowa Family's back door at 3AM on Wednesday morning. Ben Foster was arrested and ended up in the Polk County jail after the Steward family called police about a drunken intruder trying to get into their back door. Foster was charged with public intoxication and trespassing. An Iowa consultant for the Pawlenty campaign confirms that Foster was an employee of the Tim Pawlenty Presidential Exploratory Committee. The Pawlenty campaign issued the following statement: "The Pawlenty for President Exploratory Committee today acknowledged that a 24-year-old employee, Ben Foster, was arrested on public intoxication and trespassing charges...
Iowa State University Uses 'Non-Partisan' Programs for Hyper Part
2011-03-04 19:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Now, to you and me the word "non-partisan" would mean that no political position should be advocated. Sadly, to the left-wingers that run Iowa State University, "non-partisan" seems to mean just another opportunity for pushing a hyper partisan, left-wing, union-supporting message on students because the union thugs at ISU are now using the Student Ambassadors program to push the union's political positions quite despite that the charter governing the program specifically says that it is to be a non-partisan affair. Iowa recently elected a Republican governor to office and he is facing the same budget crisis that every other governor is facing due to the profligacy of past Democrat administrations and their cozy, parasitic relationship with...
Northwestern Defeats Iowa 73-70
2011-02-18 05:20:00 Though many fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes were in attendance Thursday night, the most famous of the faithful: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore were not at Welsh-Ryan Arena to see their Hawks drop yet another college basketball game; this time to the Northwestern Wildcats. Although it was much less closer than the first meeting. The Cats shot the lights out to an almost historical level on January 12th in Iowa City, winning 90-71 in a game that was even more lopsided than it sounds. However, the change of venue from road to home ended up in a -16 point swing. Usually, the differential in that situation goes completely the opposite. "It wasn't as fluid as I would have liked, or...

The Morning After: Iowa
2010-11-14 13:45:00 We've all been there. Waking up in the morning after a nighttime rendezvous, in a bed that's not ours, trying to figure out what our next move should be.We find ourselves in a similar quandary the morning after a Northwestern football game. That night of sleep between then and now should help illuminate things a little bit more.So was it as satisfying as we thought yesterday? Or should we have just said no and moved on with our lives?Luckily there's a scale to help us gauge things a bit from best to worst:5. Ready for a second round right now.4. I'll at least stay for breakfast and see what happens from there.3. Saying goodbye in person, but bolting immediately thereafter.2....
#13 Iowa-Northwestern: the Brutally Honest Game Preview
2010-11-12 17:05:00 "Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns. But we've discovered that owning things and consuming things does not satisfy our longing for meaning. We've learned that piling up material goods cannot fill the emptiness of lives which have no confidence or purpose." These words were delivered to the American people on July 15th, 1979 but are more valid today than ever in history. And they apply to the college football rivalry between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Northwestern Wildcats too! The quote is from Jimmy Carter's "Malaise speech" or "Crisis of Confidence speech."? Iowa may be in the Big Ten's upper class, but they have a crisis of confidence when it...

Sandberg, who was bypassed by Hendry for the managerial vacancy in favor of Mike Quade is reportedly "highly disappointed" that he was not given the Cubs job and yesterday indicated that he had been offered nothing by the Cubs going forward."He is certainly welcome to return to Iowa. We think he did a great job there. This was a very tough decision and one that I tossed and turned over. However, I love Ryne Sandberg and have tremendous respect for him," Hendry told me this morning. In...
Iowa's Defensive Line: Nation's Best?
2010-09-30 23:23:00 Currently one the best defenses in all of college football lives in Iowa City right now. The Iowa Hawkeyes lead the nation in total defense (227.5), rank third in rushing defense (65.5) and fifth in scoring defense (12.0). Much of that has to do with their defensive line, which rivals Alabama as quite possibly the nation's best. Led by the All-World Adrian Clayborn, and fellow frequent visitor to opponents' offensive backfields Karl Klug, the unit has wreaked havoc through the first four games. Also seeing time at a starting position in Iowa's 4-3 are Broderick Binns, Mike Daniels and Christian Ballard, a senior from Lawrence, Kansas who starred at Free State high school....
