Debating The Big Ten Title: Ohio State and Iowa Collide... Blogger Style
2009-11-13 18:27:00
With the Big Ten game of the year right around the corner, two die hard fans got together to debate the merits of their two teams. Bret Feddern, a self-admitted Hawkeye Nerd on IowaHawkeyes.net and Bleacher Report Iowa Featured Columnist, will argue for the Hawkeyes. Following Bret's tweets during an Iowa game is fun... give it a shot. I will be arguing for the Buckeyes (as if they need the help.)The Hawkeyes and Buckeyes take the field on Saturday and the winner will be off to the Rose Bowl. We can't match that drama here, but we'll give it a shot....
Des Moines Iowa Searches For Brad Paullin
2009-11-04 19:58:00
http://www.kcci.com/news/215008-67/detail.html This post is about local Iowa news. A man named Brad Paullin disappeared Halloween night and hasn't been seen since. He was last seen heading into the woods along the Des Moines river in Des Moines, Iowa, after an argument with his housemate. (Note The Google-Maps satellite data is old, taken last winter.) The woods that people are searching are right by where I am, and since I like exploring in there, I took a hike through there myself - found no clue. I did find plenty of other people searching for him though, along with the occasional helicopter. These woods are not all that hazardous. At one of the Greenbelt's widest points, I can steam right through from street to the Des Moines River in about 40 minutes. It's a vigorous 40 minutes for a 40-year-old armchair computer jockey, mind you, but nothing too daunting to someone of average physical fitness. I'm just saying, even if you were lost, a maximum of 40 minutes in a straig...
Big Ten Power Rankings: Iowa Has Eye on the Prize
2009-10-23 01:40:00
In the first edition of the Big Ten Power Rankings, FBT forecasted a situation where five teams would battle to the end for the Big Ten crown. Those five teams--Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan State--now all find themselves in position to do just that. The Hawkeyes and Buckeyes control their own destiny and are marching toward a showdown on November 14 in the 'Shoe, but both teams must also face another member of this quintet first.Ohio State must travel to Happy Valley to face the Nittany Lions and their brutal home crowd and Iowa faces Michigan State this week in a game that could put the Spartans in the driver's seat if it can pull of the upset.Penn State...

Big Scare In Iowa: What's Really Going On With Bryan Bulaga?
2009-09-11 06:07:00
According to the Des Moines Register, an Iowa radio station has described Hawkeye offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga as questionable for Saturday's rivalry game against Iowa State. Not much more is known about the reason for Bulaga's possible absence, but the mystery has led to a great deal of Internet speculation about a serious injury or even illness.  Bulaga is arguably the most talented player on the Iowa roster, and FBT named him one of the "Big Ten's Best 11" only a few weeks ago.If Bulaga will in fact miss Saturday's game, hopefully it's nothing major and he can return to the field soon.  Always hard to make sense of what's just Internet rumors and what might be real, but the story...
Iowa Blocks Upset Minded Northern Iowa 17-16 in Season Opener
2009-09-07 05:45:00
The celebration had begun. The Hawkeyes, who had been trailing for most of the game against FCS Northern Iowa, had blocked UNI's game winning field goal attempt preserving a comeback that never should have been needed in the first place. But, Iowa's Jeremiha Hunter, on the advice of teammates, let the ball roll to a stop and be scooped up by UNI.The only problem was that the ball did not cross the line of scrimmage and therefore was a live ball. The Panthers would get a redo.Instead of burying his head in his hands after what appeared to be a gut-wrenching mistake, Hunter helped his teammates focus on the next field goal try....
A Walk in the Woods
2009-09-02 15:42:00
Nothing enhances your morning coffee like a hike through the dewy wild woods of Iowa! A few shots: I have no idea what these are. I'm guessing some variety of buttercup or wild rose? There aren't many of them around. These, on the other hand, are growing everywhere. Some species of Asteraceae, I gather. I mean they grow everywhere! They weren't around a month ago, now they've exploded. Early morning fog on a clearing. I can't see, but I think we've shaken the Nazgul off our tail for now. I've found the area around the new igloo to be an endless source of entertainment - so I've started a new category, "Iowa", for the occasional photobloging adventure. Squirrels and chipmunks were all we had to work with at our last digs, but wildlife is crazy abundant around here. We've had run-ins with deer, raccoon, hawks, possums, one snake, and frogs. Lots and lots of frogs. For a while there, lots of baby ones were getting in under the garage door and we've all become ex...

The Big Ten's Best 11: No. 8 Bryan Bulaga, Iowa Offensive Tackle
2009-08-20 02:00:00
If the Hawkeyes are going to contend for the Big Ten title this season, the offense has got to be clicking like the well-oiled machine that took the field in January and delivered the Big Ten's only bowl victory. An integral piece of that machine is offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga. The 6-6, 315-pound junior has started 18 games for the Hawkeyes and now is being mentioned in the same breath as the country's top NFL offensive lineman prospects. ...
Handpicked Highlights: Iowa Loses Bernstine For 2009 Season
2009-08-14 00:22:00
Iowa DB Jordan Bernstine out for year with broken ankle.  The Des Moines Register has the details on a big setback for the nationally-ranked Hawkeyes' defense.  Remember the Alamo?  ESPN's Adam Rittenberg speculates that the Houston-based Texas Bowl could replace the Alamo as a Big Ten partner when the San Antonio game's contract expires this winter.  Seems like a step down to me--of course, that may be because last year's Texas Bowl was a barn-burner between national powers like Western Michigan and Rice.  Ouch.  At least the Texas Bowl is moving to ESPN this season, since it was carried the last three years by NFL Network (begging the question: If a college football game airs on NFL Network and nobody...

Atkins heating up in Iowa
2009-06-26 23:05:00
Iowa Cubs pitcher Mitch Atkins has won three of his last four starts, going 3-0 with 12 strike outs and four walks. In his last outing, Atkins went 7.1 innings, not giving up a hit until the eighth inning. He did strike out four but was handed a no decision. This is Atkins' best month so far, going 3-1 with a 4.15 ERA in five starts with 22 strike outs and 4 walks. Atkins' contract was bought by the Cubs at the end of last season in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Since the move, he hasn't give the Cubs any reason to promote him. Atkins still has a lot of maturing to do before he can...

Pataki Heads to Iowa
2009-04-22 19:25:00
Hmmmm. ABC is reporting: Former Republican New York Gov. George Pataki heads to Iowa Wednesday to deliver a scathing critique of President Obama’s first 100 days in office. “I think it’s time that those of us who have been silent for a while stand up and point out what I think have been just some horrendous mistakes on the part of the new administration in Washington,” Pataki told ABC News as part of the “Candidate Corner” series. “We’re seeing a president who seems to be more concerned with how popular he is in Europe than with what is happening here at home. This is a president who spends more time traveling the country than running the country in Washington. “To be perfectly honest, I am very disappointed in these first 100 days,” he added. “I think we need to see a government in Washington that is more understanding of the nature of this country and our problems and less committed to borrowing, spending, taxing an...

One Small Step for Iowa: One Giant Step for Amerikind
2009-04-04 22:25:00
Corn and great basketball teams. Caucuses and severe winters. And now, the right for all legal-aged couples who are not related to each other to get married, if they so desire. My sister, who lives in Iowa, reports there are more than 1,000 privileges that married people get that she and her partner could not get?until now. Until April 24, to be exact, when she and her partner, who have been together for at least a decade, will have their union sanctioned by the state. Luckily, my sister's employer is savvy enough to have provided domestic partner health care, which has to be one of the biggies on the list of 1,000 married couple privileges.Iowa is now only the third state to make this move. The Iowa Supreme Court hammered the nail in the coffin of the haters this past Friday with a ruling that overturned the gay-marriage ban. Now listen up, California Supreme Court. If ever there were a state that needs gay marriage it is California. I feel certain the people would prefer gay marri...

Great Expectations Tables For October 9
2008-10-10 02:30:00
McCain seems to have reduced Obama's a bit, and Obama's big lead in some key states seems to be declining. Last week Obama was up by about 6.5% nationally, and this week he's up by about 5.5%. McCain's attack mode paying off a bit? Overall though, there has not been much change in this chart in the past few days. Seems to be solidifying wherever they are.Colorado is back in the McCain column as Obama is now up by 3 there. Pollster.com's average has Obama up by 2.7%. But McCain can definitely still take Colorado, so Obama should not abandon the state. McCain is losing 13% of Bush voters there.New Hampshire, very close for a long time, has pulled away for McCain in a major way. He's now up by 11 points there and it looks hopeless for McCain. New Hampshire is not nearly as conservative a state as people think it is, and a lot of people from Massachusetts have been moving to the southeast part of the state recently. McCain is losing a 11% of the Bush voters in New Hampshire. That...

Iowa Floods - Police "Strike Teams" Invade Homes, Harass Flood Victims
2008-06-18 15:23:00
I just saw this on YouTube and had to post it. Here's the description from the video itself:Cops break down doors, threaten residents who question them as part of martial law conditioning, authorities prevent people from re-entering their homesShocking footage out of Cedar Rapids Iowa shows cops and government employee "strike teams" breaking into houses of flood victims and threatening anyone who questions their actions in complete violation of the 4th amendment right that protects against unlawful search and seizure. No warrant, no knock home invasions are being carried out on the flimsy pretext of "checking for structural damage" as cops harass and threaten with arrest people who refuse to have their homes ransacked by thugs in uniforms.Cedar Rapids police chief Greg Graham promised residents over the weekend that "Law enforcement officers are not entering homes," and that firefighters would only enter homes through unlocked doors and windows yet the video clearly shows locked h...

Saturday Night Live Skit Puts Obama and Clinton Side by Side
2008-05-23 08:22:00
There can only be one. They both have their eye on the prize, the Democratic nomination, and eventually, the White House. In a hilarious skit placing Obama?s character and Clinton?s character side by side, they say what you know they are thinking. Clinton ?points out? that Iowa shouldn?t count as much because it was a caucus state. Obama ?says? any Democrat would carry California, a state he lost to Clinton. Obama calls the backbone of the party the youth and Clinton says it is hard working white people. The clip ends with both candidates saying what we can all stand behind, Obama says that it is democracy, and Clinton says it is that she deserves this. Watch the skit below:

Iowa Sees Steady Climb in Foreclosures, Concentrated in Rural Areas
2008-05-15 15:45:00
The Iowa foreclosure rate is now up over 120% from where it was during the first quarter of 2007, sparking increasing concern among cash-strapped citizens that 2008 will only make it harder for Iowa residents to keep up with mortgage payments and avoid foreclosure. Foreclosures in Iowa have experienced a steady climb over the past year, and the first quarter statistics were up 25% from the final quarter of last year.
The Real Estate market here in Sioux City Iowa.
2008-05-13 23:19:00
A couple of days ago I got an e-mail from an agent friend from Reno Nevada. It was her "Market News" for the Reno area. Here in Sioux City we are surviving the housing crisis. We've had some foreclosure's, a down swing in sales and home prices. This does not come close to what other areas have been going through. I have family in Reno and I know it has been a tough time for Sellers. Most of the Reno area was suffering, only North Reno seemed to be holding it's own during this tough market. Here in Sioux City our inventory of homes is stale. Buyers just do not have much to choose from. New homes on the market are slim. Some sellers are opting to go the route of FSBO thinking this will save them money since they believe they will suffer in their home price due to the market. I know the market will pick up but for me it's not happening soon enough. Being a single parent I now have to look for full time work to pay the bills. I have been wo...
