Iowa Sees Steady Climb in Foreclosures, Concentrated in Rural Areas
2008-05-15 15:45:00
The Iowa foreclosure rate is now up over 120% from where it was during the first quarter of 2007, sparking increasing concern among cash-strapped citizens that 2008 will only make it harder for Iowa residents to keep up with mortgage payments and avoid foreclosure. Foreclosures in Iowa have experienced a steady climb over the past year, and the first quarter statistics were up 25% from the final quarter of last year.
The Real Estate market here in Sioux City Iowa.
2008-05-13 23:19:00
A couple of days ago I got an e-mail from an agent friend from Reno Nevada. It was her "Market News" for the Reno area. Here in Sioux City we are surviving the housing crisis. We've had some foreclosure's, a down swing in sales and home prices. This does not come close to what other areas have been going through. I have family in Reno and I know it has been a tough time for Sellers. Most of the Reno area was suffering, only North Reno seemed to be holding it's own during this tough market. Here in Sioux City our inventory of homes is stale. Buyers just do not have much to choose from. New homes on the market are slim. Some sellers are opting to go the route of FSBO thinking this will save them money since they believe they will suffer in their home price due to the market. I know the market will pick up but for me it's not happening soon enough. Being a single parent I now have to look for full time work to pay the bills. I have been wo...

Iowa wildlife report: bunnies!
2008-05-07 20:38:00
Excuse for not mowing the lawn lately #137: I have a nest of bunnies. The kids discovered a bunny nest on our front lawn. Evidently, rabbits dig holes in the ground, birth their brood, and then cover the hole with some dried grass and bits of their own fur. We have been careful not to touch them so as not to leave human smell on them, and so far they seem to be OK with our occasional intrusion. As I understand it, rabbits lactate like any mammal, and the mother nurses them only a few minutes out of the day, but rabbit milk is powerful nutritious, so it balances out. Bunnies take about a month to mature enough to go it alone. Also, rabbits aren't particularly attentive mothers. We've seen her come back to the nest at night. Usually she leaves it with more grass and fur piled on it, in an attempt to hide it better. With wilderness all around us, I don't know why she chose the lawn of a suburban home for her nursery. So the pics aren't too sharp, because I'm trying to be...

Wolverines in the Upper Midwest
2008-04-12 14:32:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here. This post was split off from an earlier post that got too large, California Wolverine Re-discovered After 85 Years. This particular post will deal with the question of wolverines in the Upper Midwest. Until recently, wolverines had been extinct in the Upper Midwest for 85-200 years. However, one was photographed in 2004 in Ubly, Michigan. Furthermore, there have been some tantalizing sightings in Minnesota and possibly in Iowa in recent years. It is distinctly possible the wolverines may be reclaiming some of their historical territory in the Upper Midwest. If so, this is fascinating indeed.A wolverine was recently photographed in Michigan, where they were reportedly extirpated almost 200 years ago. Nobody has the faintest idea how that wolverine got to Ubly, Michigan, 90 miles north of Detroit. It could have come down from the Upper Peninsula...
Indiana Feels Like New Hampshire & Iowa
2008-04-10 20:14:00
Obama ate breakfast at the Sunrise Cafe in South Bend this morning. People were lined up in bad weather this morning awaiting Barack Obama’s arrival at Gary, Indiana’s Roosevelt High School. Hillary Clinton plans a trip to Valparaiso. Will she grab a bite to eat with Valpo well-wishers at a local restaurant when she stops in Northwest Indiana? Bill Clinton is wandering around southern Indiana. Indiana is starting to feel like New Hampshire and Iowa with all of the retail politics going on in the Hoosier state as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama battle for every Democratic vote they each can get in Indiana’s primary. The battle and all of the campaign activity is enough to make Republicans want to switch over and vote for one of the two candidates this spring — despite threats by Democratic officials to try to block these voters from casting a ballot. Look for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to start knocking on doors if the Democratic primary polls continue...

Should the NASCAR All-Star Race be moved to a non-Cup racetrack like Iowa S
2008-04-09 04:02:00
So here we are again, 38 days away from the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and if SPEED counting down every weekend starting in Daytona saying x number of days before the all-star race wasn’t enough, now Lowe’s Motor Speedway has announced that they will be painting the walls (formerly Nextel yellow), now Sprint yellow, oh brother. While I don’t really care about the walls, the do think about the All-Star location and date, where should this race really be? In my opinion, the all-star really does count as a Cup Series race, it packs in fans from all over, so guess what, it’s a Sprint Cup Series race. With that said, I do believe that in an age where Cup dates are already at a premium, the idea of rotating this race around should be an option, however that’s not what I had in mind. I would like to see NASCAR move the All-Star race from Lowe’s Motor Speedway to either another racetrack that only has one date or possibly one that has no cup date. The n...

Obama Gains 10 Delegates Out of Iowa
2008-03-16 07:38:00
The County Convention for Iowa ended with some good news for Barack Obama, netting him an additional ten delegates to the Democratic National Convention.About half of the county delegates that supported John Edwards and other minor candidates, switched sides during the vote, giving Obama a second victory over his rival.
Obama Wins Again in Iowa
2008-03-16 02:43:00
Barack Obama improved his expected number of delegates in Iowa in the second round of voting in that state as county conventions selected delegates for the next round of voting. If all of today's selected delegates maintain today's allegiances at later stages, Obama would win 23 of Iowa's 45 pledged national convention delegates, improving on the 16 delegates he was projected to receive when Iowa held its caucuses back in January - where today's voters were selected and given their voting instructions. Hillary Clinton would capture 16 delegates, improving from the 15 she was projected to win back in January, while John Edwards would capture the remaining 6 delegates (down from 14 in January). One of the things many people don't realize about Iowa's caucus system - for both parties - is that the candidate who ultimately gets the majority of the state's national delegates often isn't the one who won the state during its initial caucus round. Twenty-nine actual delegates wi...

Big 10 Tournament Preview: Iowa-Michigan
2008-03-13 04:30:00
When it comes to 8 and 9 seed matchups, especially in conference tournaments, teams are normally pretty well matched up in terms of records and even statistics. In the case of the Iowa Hawkeyes-Michigan Wolverines matchup, you can’t get much closer with two teams. First of all, in the conference standings, these two teams are only 1 game apart. In terms of the 2 game matchup between the two in the regular season, they split the series and each won by 8 points. Something’s gotta give. Iowa really is sliding overall coming into the tournament, only winning 3 of their last10, with 2 of those games coming against last place Northwestern. Sure, there were some tough games, but there were some games that were very winnable. The offense as of late has been pretty awful–they’ve hovered around the 50 mark several times and had one game in January where they scored a horrid 36 points against Michigan State. Tony Freeman has been the leader of the team, averaging 14 poi...
