How Bout That IPCC Consensus?
2007-12-17 01:05:00
Consensus my ass! (Canada Free Press and Icecap) It?s an assertion repeated by politicians and climate campaigners the world over ? ?2,500 scientists of the United Nation?s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) agree that humans are causing a climate crisis?. But it?s not true. And, for the first time ever, the public can now see the ...

CLIMATE CHANGE: IPCC report reinforces need for climate change action
2007-11-18 15:47:00
The latest report from the UN?s climate change panel reiterates the need for concerted and urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Climate Change Minister David Parker says.Fresh from sharing this year?s Nobel Peace Prize with former US vice-president Al Gore, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released its fourth and final 2007 report on global climate change.David Parker welcomed the release of the global Synthesis Report in Valencia, Spain, which underlines findings released earlier this year and supports calls for urgent action. The Minister said the information the IPCC produced made a clear case that governments can act and must act to avert dangerous climate change. ?It confirms the increasing pace of climate change, and the serious impacts we and the rest of the globe may face if we do not get greenhouse gas emissions under control.?The report reiterates that with technologies that are available and affordable today, or that are currently being...

IPCC To Warn of Abrupt Warming
2007-11-17 07:07:00
At a meeting held by top scientists once every four years is conviening in Spain this weekend to determine major concerns regarding climate change and their PROJECTIONS are in:1.Probable temperature rise between 1.8C and 4C2.Possible temperature rise between 1.1C and 6.4C3.Sea level most likely to rise by 28-43cm4.Arctic summer sea ice disappears in second half of century5.Increase in heatwaves very likely 6.Increase in tropical storm intensity likelyIPCC experts agreed that the rise in Earth's temperature observed in the past few decades was principally due to human causes, not natural ones, as "climate sceptics" I agree with the skeptics natural causes is what is causing climate change!

2007-11-13 11:26:00
The Independent Police Complaints Comission (IPCC) has cleared North Wales Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom of any wrongdoing in an investigation into the display of a decapitated motorcyclist at the launch of a road safety campaign - without the consent of the biker's family. "The IPCC independent investigation has found no evidence that the Chief Constable contravened Criminal Law or breached the Police Code of Conduct." Although the investigation has ruled out any legal complaint, it does go on to look at the situation in which the the complaint arose: "The IPCC has recommended that the North Wales Police Force and its management, under the leadership of the Chief Constable, examine the issues arising from this incident and strengthen, where appropriate, the existing internal arrangements for events requiring the co-operation and involvement of the media. It has also recommended that the North Wales Police Authority, in line with its duties of public accountability, examine ...

PESKY POLES: THE IPCC SPEAKS
2007-11-05 03:43:00
If the arctic is warming and the antarctic is not, it’s hardly GLOBAL warming is it? The IPCC report on the subject has now apparently passed political vetting and a summary of it is below. The article notes the difference between the two poles but does not really try to explain it. But the difference is no great mystery. It is arctic sea-ice that has receded a bit recently. The land-based ice on Greenland appears to be stable or growing, just like the antarctic ice, which is also mostly land-based. So how come THAT difference — between different parts of the arctic? Easy. Right underneath the sea-ice is the Gakkel ridge, which is showing a high rate of vulcanism at the moment. If you had a volcano under you, you would melt too. : The Antarctic will be spared the worst of global warming and its ice mass could even grow, but the Arctic will be devastated by rising temperatures, a major new scientific report will claim. In contrast to earlier fears that ice around the Sout...

2007-10-14 11:15:00
www.r10.net kuresel isinmaya hayir seo yarismasiToday the IPCC released its 4th installment of its report on global warming. It has found that only .12 percent of world GDP would be needed to stave off the harmful effects of climate change. Echoing the Stern Report it shows that the only thing we should be afraid of is doing nothing. The report focused on economic changes that need to be made, pointing out that emissions must start declining by the year 2015 to prevent the world?s temperature from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrialized temperatures. (a scenario that would be catastrophic)Read the summary for policy makers here docWhile some governments try to delay action, the switch to a cleaner and more efficient energy system is already underway, according to a new report from WWF.A new briefing from the global conservation organization, Stop Climate Change: It Is Possible highlights 15 ways in which people, business and governments work with WWF to reduce CO2...

Biofuels Will Not Solve Global Warming: IPCC's Report Sparks Protest
2007-05-07 19:00:00
Last week's release of the IPCC's Summary for Policymakers on climate change mitigation sparked backlash from several environmental groups. In a joint press release, Biofuelwatch, Global Forest Coalition, Global Justice Ecology Project, and several others stated they are "deeply concerned" about the inclusion of "large-scale expansion of biofuels from monoculture", including Genetically Modified (GM) crops, as a specific recommendation for mitigating catastrophic climate change. According to the statement, the indisputable need for drastic greenhouse gas emissions reductions should not hinge upon wider implementation of biofuels that contribute to deforestation and compete so readily with the world's food supply: [M]onoculture expansion is a driving force behind the destruction of rainforests and other carbon sinks and reservoirs, thus accelerating climate change. . .[It] is a major threat to the livelihoods and food sovereignty of communities ma...

Environmental Community Responds to IPCC Report on Global Warming
2007-05-05 00:46:00
As Maria reported this morning, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change did release the findings of Working Group III today, which focuses on the steps the global community must take to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. On one hand, the report was hopeful: we can lessen the effects of global warming with quick, substantive, mandatory action by the world's governments. Furthermore, the costs of such actions would be relatively low, and much of the technology needed already exists. On the other hand, the report does recommend the use of advanced nuclear power (let the arguments on this one begin!), and carbon capture and storage, which is not a fully developed technology. We've gathered some of the responses to today's report, and provided excerpts below. Please let us know about others in the comments. Environmental Defense: ?We have a window of opportunity, but it won't stay open forever,? said Steve Cochran, national climate campaign director at...
IPCC issues plan for global climate change
2007-05-05 00:24:00
In Thailand today, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) held a press conference to announce its Fourth Assessment Report which gathers together the research, opinions and prognosis of 2,000 scientists around the world. According to MSNBC, "the report said the world has to make significant cuts in emissions through increasing the energy efficiency of buildings and vehicles, shifting from fossil fuels to renewable fuels, and reforming both the forestry and farming sectors."According to MSNBC, the report warned:The document made clear that nations have the technology and money to decisively act in time to avoid a sharp rise in temperatures that scientists say would wipe out species, raise ocean levels, wreak economic havoc and trigger droughts in some places and flooding in others.Under the most stringent scenario, the report said the world must stabilize the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by 2015 ? eight years from now ? at 445 parts per million to keep g...
IPCC Report: Solving Global Warming is Cheap
2007-05-04 23:23:00
Which scenario would you prefer - a global economy with an annual growth rate of 4.9% per year that is plunging the world into catastrophic global warming? Or, enjoying a healthy world economy with an annual growth rate of 4.78% and averting a climate catastrophe? Those are the two options that were delivered to world leaders today in Bangkok as the UN's International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the results of its third report of 2007. Their first report showed that global warming is occurring and that human's are the primary cause. The second demonstrated the catastrophic impacts of unchecked global warming on the world. Now, in their third report, the IPCC's panel of scientists and economists offers the solutions to this problem.Keeping the global rise in average temperature to about 2C, the most radical and expensive scenario addressed here, would shave about 0.12% off the average annual GDP growth rate. For comparison, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projec...
IPCC to Release Global Warming Mitigation Report Today
2007-05-04 14:41:00
Today the fourth and final assessment from the United Nations? Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), ?Mitigation of Climate Change,? will be released. More than 400 scientists and experts from 120 countries are in Bangkok, Thailand this week to finalize the report. The summary of Mitigation of Climate Change will be posted here; go here for a live webcast around 1PM local time. The full report will be released in September. The report will lay out ways to cut global warming emissions and prevent the worst impacts without seriously hurting the global economy. In fact, it is expected to show that the cost of doing nothing is far higher than the cost of taking action now. On Wednesday, the Taipei Times reported that talks were stalled by China, India, and Brazil, who insisted that industrialized nations take more responsibility for their pollution contribution. The stalemate took up other time meant for discussion on how to best tackle global warming. One European delega...

IPCC Censorship?

One argument I often hear from skeptics is that the IPCC is not to be trusted because it’s too political and it censors critics. Mitigate and Adapt: The IPCC Global Warming Report
2007-04-07 16:08:00
Yesterday the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its second report of the year on global warming. Back in February, the IPCC explained the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change. This time, we learn the impacts. For increases in global mean temperature of less than 1-3 degrees Celsius above 1990 levels, impacts may produce benefits in some places and some sectors, and produce costs in other places and sectors. However, some low latitude and polar regions of the world will see net costs rise even with only small increases in temperature. Once the average temperature increases more than 2-3 degrees Celsius in any region, however, it is ?very likely? that we wil see declining benefits and instead see an increase in net costs. The Summary for Policymakers of the Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability reports the projected effects of climate change: Costs and benefits of climate change for industry, settlement, and society will vary widely by locatio...

An IPCC primer
2007-01-30 10:13:02
Global warming is going to be a big news story this week as we approach the Friday release of a UN report on climate change. This would be a good time to pause for a review of some of the basics around the story. The report is the product of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)?an organization made up of thousands of climate change scientists from around the world. The IPCC was formed by the UN nearly twenty years ago and periodically releases a comprehensive report on what is known and not known about climate change. The last came out in 2001 and the report that will officially be released this week in Paris will be their fourth since the panel?s inception. The report undergoes several drafts and line-by-line vetting by hundreds of scientists in what I can only imagine must be an exhaustive and sometimes frustrating process. The final report must be given unanimous approval from all of the 154 countries that are represented on the panel. It is this process which giv...
