Regen, Regen, Regen
Techn...

Luck of the Irish: New Ireland (IRL)
2008-07-18 01:00:00 "Ireland is attracting global value hunters," says fund expert Carl Delfeld (http://www.chartwelletfadvisor-.com/), of Chartwell ETF Advisor (http://www.chartwelletfadvisor-.com/), who takes a contrarian look at the closed-end New Ireland Fund (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=irl) (NYSE: IRL (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=irl))."My ETF pick for the week is in honor of John Templeton not just because of his meeting his final summons this week at age 95 but because it highlights one of the key tenets of his legendary investment career."Templeton's first maxim was to buy at the point of 'maximum pessimism'. IRL trades at a 15% discount to net asset value."Ireland has gone from darling to outcast in less than a year in the eyes of the global investment community. "Rather than look for markets that were performing well, Sir John built a career looking for troubled or ignored markets that traded at attractive valuations."Due to vastly overvalued pro...
Referendum in Ireland: "NO" to the Treaty of Lisbon
2008-06-13 23:38:00 That's why democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried. The Irish voted "No" against the end of restrictions on abortion, and to keep the country?s traditional neutrality and the low tax rates responsible for the rise of the Celtic Tiger. Not against the Treaty. Now what?Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish.

Three cheers for Ireland!
2008-06-13 16:39:00 BBC says,"Voters in Ireland have rejected the European Union's Lisbon reform treaty in a referendum by 53.4% to 46.6%.The vote is a major blow to leaders in the 27-nation EU, which requires all its members to ratify the treaty. Only Ireland has held a public vote. The European Commission says nations should continue to ratify the treaty, designed to streamline decision-making.Irish PM Brian Cowen said he respected the vote but it had caused a "difficult situation" that had "no quick fix".Leaders of the No campaign said the vote was a "great result for Ireland".An earlier, more wide-ranging EU draft constitution failed after French and Dutch voters rejected it in 2005.The Irish No campaign won by 862,415 votes to 752,451. Turnout was 53.1%.A referendum was mandatory in Ireland as the country would need to change its constitution to accommodate the treaty.France and Germany quickly issued a joint statement expressing regret over the Irish result.British Foreign Secretary David Miliban...

Lisbon Treaty - Yes vote just leads in Irish poll.
2008-06-08 17:11:00 From William Hill:Punters & Politicians Left Scratching Their Heads Following Latest Lisbon Treaty PollThe Yes Campaign has a slender 3% lead going into the final few days before Ireland?s referendum on the controversial Lisbon treaty. The latest Red C poll in the Sunday Business Post has the Yes campaign sitting on 42%, the No?s at 39%, and the undecided?s at 19%.Earlier in the week a TNS/mrbi poll indicated that the opponents to the Lisbon treaty had a 5 percentage point lead over those in favour of it.The latest Red C poll has also had an effect on bookmakers betting on the Lisbon Treaty. William Hill now make a YES vote their 2-7 favourite, and offer odds of 5-2 for a NO vote. Prior to today?s poll the bookies had made the No?s 8-11 favourite, however, they were forced to reassess their prices after seeing the Red C Poll.William Hill?s Irish spokesman Tony Kenny commented ?It still looks to close to call? he continued ?We?ve seen a lot of money for both sides of the debate, ...

No to Lisbon: Ireland seems set to reject EU treaty
2008-06-07 13:32:00 A few months ago in a post titled "Why Ireland should say no to Lisbon," I argued the con position on the EU treaty now before the Irish people At the time it seemed that the Yes forces were destined to carry the day. However the tide has dramatically shifted, and it now appears that Ireland is likely to give the thumbs down to the treaty. The Lisbon treaty is an amended version of the constitution for Europe that was rejected by the French and the Dutch in 2005. The new treaty retains many of the earlier institutional innovations, but critics have complained it is too complex, contains many loopholes and can't be easily understood by those unfamiliar with the sometimes obscure protocols and legalisms. An Irish Times poll has shown a major shift in public opinion over recent weeks. Treaty opponents have doubled their support, going from 17 to 35%, while supporters of the treaty have slipped from 35 to 30%.Ireland's governing and main opposition parties all support the treaty. They...

Irish odds on to vote NO in Lisbon Treaty referendum.
2008-06-06 15:42:00 William Hill are giving "even" odds for a YES vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum. Those of us opposed to the treaty will be glad to hear that the NO vote is "odds on" - 8/11. This could be down to the latest poll held on the Treaty. If you are Irish, please vote NO for us, because we were not allowed a referendum as we would vote against the Treaty.

Irish look set to reject Lisbon Treaty.
2008-06-05 22:47:00 Hat tip to Iain Dale. From the Irish Times:The Lisbon Treaty is heading towards a shock defeat with the No side now in the lead, according to the findings of the latest Irish Times/TNS mrbi poll.It will take an unprecedented swing in the last week of the campaign for the Treaty to be carried. The poll shows the number of people intending to vote No has almost doubled to 35 per cent (up 17 points) since the last poll three weeks ago, while the number of the Yes side has declined to 30 per cent (down 5 points). The number of undecided voters is still a significant 28 per (down 12 points) cent, while 7 per cent won?t vote. The massive increase by the No vote since the last poll has mainly come through gains among undecided voters but, even more ominously for the Yes side, it has lost some support to the No camp. While the final outcome is still in the hands of undecided voters, the clear momentum is now with the No campaign, and it will take a dramatic shift in public attitudes over the nex...

Lisbon Treaty - Irish Referendum - End of Nations.
2008-05-28 08:15:00 I posted this video last month and seeing as the 12th of June Irish Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty is just around the corner, I thought it would be a good time to post it again:This is a must watch, eye opening video from the Wise Up Journal. From their website:We set out to make a video about the pros and cons of the Lisbon Treaty and found out to our horror the lies, manipulations and deceit behind the EU. From MEPs, legal experts and EU researches the true nature of the EU unfolded, how it really operates from behind closed doors and away from prying eyes. We discovered the massive power grab away from citizens and nations to the elites that is being proposed in this treaty. Most shocking of all was how our elected representatives are willingly handing us over to this emerging Totalitarian Superstate by deception , propaganda and outright lies. This video details how the structures of the EU really operate, what the full significance of the Lisbon Treaty is and how it is the end o...

Irish Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty 12th June 2008
2008-05-13 19:56:00 The date has been set for the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. The 12th of June could be the day the Irish save the UK from the EU superstate. The Irish government under their new Prime Minister, Brian Cowen are supporting the "yes" vote. However a yes result is not set in stone. In a recent poll 38 said yes, 28 no and 34 were undecided. A previous poll was even closer with only a 4 point gap between yes and no.It's clear that the strength of feeling is stronger amongst the "no" voters, and they are more likely to turn out on voting day. Here's hoping anyway.Come on you Irish beauties. Do Europe a massive favour and vote NO. Please!Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

Full Disk Encryption Has One Thing Over File Encryption: Bank of Ireland Up
2008-04-29 07:28:00 Last week, the Bank of Ireland (BoI) had announced that four laptop computers lost over the past year or so could have affected 10,000 customers. The BoI has updated the number of customers affected to over 30,000, per the investigation they were conducting after the announcement. There has been a lot of criticism on the BoI?s actions, or lack thereof: they had waited nearly a year to alert their customers about the increased risk of identity theft they were facing. The BoI for its part countered the criticism by saying that they didn?t want to alert the thieves about the true worth of the stolen laptop computers. Today?s revelation by the BoI is not really surprising. Similar post?announcements have been conducted in the past when other organizations have had to revise the number of affected clients affected by stolen computers, be they laptops or otherwise. Gaffes like these arise for quite simple reasons, really: we never have a complete of ...

Bank Of Ireland Loses Laptops Without Hard Drive Encryption
2008-04-22 06:59:00 Bank of Ireland customers, nearly 10,000 of them, have had their information stolen. Between June and October of last year, four laptops were stolen from the bank?s life assurance division. The information breach included data on personal pension plan details, dates of birth, addresses, and bank account details. Whole disk encryption solutions like AlertBoot were not featured in the stolen laptops. However, the bank must have realized at some point that full disk encryption is a convenient way of securing the data on their computers: the bank is in the process of encrypting all 5000 of them, which will take about two weeks. This certainly pales in comparison to how the other type of bank in Ireland handled a similar situation earlier this year. In February, an Irish blood bank had reported that almost 175,000 people could have been affected by the theft of a laptop (actually, a mugging). But, chances are they weren?t and won?t be because t... |
