An Istanbul Walk in the Sun
2008-07-06 15:42:00 This morning I had a brainwave and set-off from my hotel to walk to Istanbul City Center! It didn?t look far on the map ? believe me, although now I am beginning to think that I read the scale wrong and also the sky was cloudy which made perfect conditions for a long trek!My hotel is located in a suburb of Istanbul called Pendik, closer to Tuzla than Istanbul! The map showed me that a simple walk along an excellent promenade (that runs all the way along the coast) would have had me in the big city without further ado! And so with all the good will in the world, a little bottle of water and a steady gait I set-off on my Sunday adventure! The point at which I decided to turn away from IstanbulI never reached my destination! After setting off at 9am the sun decided to appear and blast 33 degrees plus degrees down onto lil?ol unsuspecting me! Not to be outdone I pushed on but after three hours and 17 kilometers of grueling sun I eventually had to give up! Another 17 kilometres later and ...
The bridges of Istanbul Bogazi
2008-07-06 02:42:00 Location : Off Sardegna Island, Mediterian / 38 45 N / 005 23 EYesterday I had shown you a picture of one of the bridges connecting thecontinents of Europe and Asia. To the bridge enthusiasts, who might find thepictures of the bridges often enough, I wanted to show this informationabout the bridges, given on the navigational charts. These are great bridgesand as we can see that the first bridge has a span of about 600 meters, thesecond bridge, goes on for about a kilometer. With a height of about 68 meters from the high water mark, these are some ofthe greatest bridges that I have passed under.
The Bridge at Istanbul
2008-07-05 08:12:00 Location : 150 miles off Sardegna Islands, 38 50 N , 005 43 E Readers of my blog will remember the Bridge of the Americas at Panama City , that connected the continents of North & South America. Pictured here is one of the two bridges at Istanbul, Turkey. These bridges are the only road (and probably rail) connection between the continents of Europe and Asia. I did mention on my previous post that they are building an underground/water tunnel, but I think that is still some years away from opening.

Istanbul
2008-06-29 23:39:00 These mosques are the first thing that come to mind when I think of Istanbul. Took this picture a few days back as we passed the Bosphorous. It was evening and the setting sun painted the mosques in a magical golden color. If you are wondering about the three minars on the right, they seem to have some scaffolding on at present for maintainence. In the foreground are the many many small ferry's that keep going up and down the channel the whole day. Good thing they keep out of the way of people like us. Almost at this exact location the Turks are building an underwater tunnel that is built more than half way. We'll probably have less of these guys once that gets built. But then they are also planning a Oil Pipeline to the Med from the Black sea. So it might very well be that they will see a lot less of us. :)
Why Fewer Homeless in Istanbul Than in Seattle?
2008-06-13 02:24:00 The Rev. Patrick Howell, S.J., in a special report to The Seattle Times, gives us his insight regarding a part of the reason why, as he observed on a recent trip, there are so few homeless people living on the streets of Istanbul: "We saw a few beggars in Istanbul, but the homeless, if they exist, were not visible to us. Our Turkish hosts, most of whom had completed college degrees in the U.S

Turkish Grand Prix: Massa, imperator of Istanbul.
2008-05-11 15:41:00 The fifth leg of the Formula One championship was run today in Istanbul and Felipe Massa registered his third consecutive pole-victory combination on this circuit.A very exciting race was offered to racing fans today mainly because the configuration of the circuit allows many overtaking chances to the pilots. We saw many position changes and battle throughout the field today.Starting from the third position on the grid, Lewis Hamilton was on a three pit stops strategy while the Ferrari cars were on a two stop strategy. Being lighter than his opponents, Hamilton managed to overtake Felipe Massa before his first stop.In the end, McLaren's strategy allowed the british driver to gain one position overall. The other McLaren driver, Heikki Kovalainen, experienced a front tire puncture after a contact with Kimi Raikkonen's car during the start. The puncture costed Kovalainen dearly as he did not score any points today as he finished in 12th position. But nobody managed to keep Felipe Mass...

AMD 6-core Istanbul to arrive in 2H 2009
2008-05-10 08:12:00 Fudzilla - AMD 6-core Istanbul to arrive in 2H 2009: "We've seen an updated server roadmap where AMD places its six-core Istanbul processor for the second half of 2009. At first, AMD internally said that there will be some samples in late 2008, but 2H 2009 is the time of volume production. The new six-core CPU will have 6MB L3 cache and DDR2 support, powered by HT-3 and AMD Virtualization support. Of course, this CPU will be developed in 45nm and it looks just like Shanghai 45nm CPU but with two additional cores.Istanbul fits in the current socket F1 (1207) and it will be available for 2P and above configurations: OEMs shouldn’t have much trouble to make it work in existing servers. In 2009 AMD’s chipset of choice for the server market is Nvidia Nforce 3600/3050 with Broadcom HT-2100/1000; while that will change in 2010 for AMD’s own chipset. We would be scared if we were Nvidia’s chipset manager, as it lost a lot of AMD market and you can bet that it will be even worse for I...

AMD plans native Six-core, Istanbul
2008-04-25 13:47:00 Fudzilla - AMD plans native Six-core, Istanbul: "We've had a chance to see what is planned for late 2008 or early 2009 and we were not that surprised to see a six-core on the latest roadmap.Intel just announced its six-core Dunnington and in order to stay in the server / workstation game AMD has to have a competitor. The main difference between Dunnington and AMD's six-core codenamed Istanbul is that K10.5, 45nm-based Istanbul is native six-core, while Dunnington is three dual-core Penryns stitched together. If AMD makes this six-core product in time, Intel might get some competition in this particular area."
