Cortaca 2008
2008-11-14 16:45:00 Take a look at the Division I college football schedule this week. There are no games featuring two ranked teams, and the big Saturday night games on ABC are either #13 Oklahoma State (8-2) against 5-5 Colorado or 6-3 Boston College at #19 Florida State (7-2). Don?t expect huge TV ratings. So what?s the game of the weekend? The 50th annual Cortaca Jug game! Not convinced yet?* Fine. You want to see a match-up of two ranked teams, right? Cortland State (9-0) is ranked #7 in the current D3Football.com poll while Ithaca College (8-1) is #17. Looking for drama? Although Cortland has already clinched an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs, a win could give the team a regional top seed. IC appears to be in decent shape to make the playoffs, but nothing is guaranteed. A win over Cortland would almost certainly be enough for a postseason berth. How about history? The schools started playing in 1930 and have met every year since 1948. Ithaca leads the all-time seri...

Sunday Links
2008-10-26 14:56:00 At what age does it stop being fun to play in the rain? I worked two games as a soccer referee yesterday in miserable cold and rainy conditions. In the second game, where the weather turned worse than the first one, some of the 15 and 16 year-old kids seemed to be having a great time. I did not, but of course, I was not actually playing. On to the links:According to WJLA, Presidential candidate John McCain?s brother, Joe, called 911 to complain about traffic on the Wilson Bridge. Not very smart.I don?t want to write about the Pitt and Ohio State football teams (it?s so frustrating being a Pitt fan; I may write about this in length some day), but at least Ithaca College won defeating Utica 42-7. The win guarantees Ithaca?s 38th consecutive winning season, the second longest such streak in any level of college football. If only the Pittsburgh Pirates would have one winning season!Jason has a video of the Wazzup guys eight years later.Puck Daddy interviews Kevin Smith, the direc...

Vote for the Intern Superstar
2008-08-20 02:23:00 Ithaca College senior Revital Roza's summer internship with "Good Morning America" may have an unexpected payoff. The ABC show is holding an "American Idol"-style contest pitting Roza and her funk-rock band The Rozatones - comprised of IC classmates - against a fellow intern. Go to ABC News website to vote for Roza simply because she is an Ithaca College student (and because she?s a talented musician, of course; seriously, she and the Rozatones sound really good). You can also check out the Ithaca Journal for more information about Roza and the contest.

Ithaca vs. Cortland
2008-05-18 16:09:00 Several times over the past few years I have written about the annual Cortaca Jug football game between Ithaca College and SUNY-Cortland once dubbed "The Biggest Little Game in the Nation" by Sports Illustrated. Although football season is still several months away, Ithaca and Cortland will face each other twice on Sunday in some of the biggest athletic match-ups between the two schools in their histories. The sports: men?s lacrosse and women?s softball. In lacrosse, #7 IC (17-2) and #2 Cortland (17-1) meet in the Division III semi-final today at 1:00. Cortland?s only loss this season: a 9-8 loss to Ithaca on March 22. The Ithaca Journal has a full preview and WSYR in Syracuse and WBNG in Binghamton show how each team made it this far. One hour earlier, the #4 seed Cortland faces the #6 seed Ithaca in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship. There are only six teams remaining in the double-elimination tournament, and the loser of this match will return to upstate New York....

Procrastination Week
2007-11-19 13:12:00 It is a short week for everyone unless they work in retail, and I don?t want to write about the Steelers embarrassing loss to the Jets (special teams and offensive line problems AGAIN) or Ithaca College falling to Mount Union (this was not unexpected but I was hopeful for a huge upset). Actually, how can a team allow the Jets, who only had 9 sacks in 9 games, record 7 sacks? OK, I don?t want to talk about football anymore. Instead, I?ll share the following links and quizzes that will hopefully occupy some time if you don?t feel like working very hard or if you?re waiting for the turkey to be ready. In case you were wondering, national procrastination week is in March, so I wish you a late Happy Procrastination Week!* Rolling Stone presents ?The Almost-Impossible Rock & Roll Quiz.? I scored a 32 but with lots of guesses.* The Chicago Tribune lists the top 25 worst TV shows ever. There is no reason why Mr. Belvedere should be on this list especially when shows like MTV?s Date My...

Bombers Win!
2007-11-10 22:41:00 Ithaca College defeated Cortland 40-17 to take back the Cortaca Jug. Woo hoo! Go Bombers! (Here's the box score.) Now we wait until Sunday to see if Ithaca makes the Division III playoffs.

Rivalry Weekend
2007-11-09 13:36:00 This is a big rivalry weekend with Cortland State at Ithaca College on Saturday and the Cleveland Browns visiting the Steelers on Sunday. I?ll start with the 49th Cortaca Jug game, although there have actually been 65 games in the series (Ithaca leads 36-26-3). Both teams enter with 7-2 records and the winner has an outside chance at making the Division III playoffs, even though no 8-2 teams earned an at-large bid in 2006 and the D3football.com playoff projections fail to include either team. I?ve got several links for this game so here we go:* The Ithacan explains how the Bombers can make the postseason.*Cortland Game Notes*The Ithaca Journal?s preview #1 and #2*To the fans, stay safe out there. (Seriously, don?t drink and drive; plus, there are usually checkpoints set up between Ithaca and Cortland.)After the Steelers crushed Cleveland in week one, I wrote that the rivalry between the two teams was over. I?m not ready to retract what I wrote, but Sunday?s game may decide the A...

2007-05-25 13:08:00 Fergie is coming to Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax. No, I?m not kidding. (Click on the meet Fergie tab.) Here?s your chance to challenge Fergie to a spelling contest! She will be at Verizon Experience store at 3:00pm on Tuesday, May 29.Good luck to the Ithaca College Women?s Crew team at the NCAA Rowing Championships!I admit that I?m not as devoted of a Lost fan as most other followers, but the season finale on Wednesday was really, really good. Here?s a good recap of all things Lost. Please note that most of the theories are way above me. Fourteen Ithaca College students of the a cappella group Ithacappella, some of them seniors skipping their own graduation ceremony, opened the set of an Incubus concert in LA. Ithaca College Alumni
2007-01-28 10:30:02 It has been a good month for Ithaca College alumni. I broke my personal record of two years for being at one job; Gino Bona won the NFL?s "Pitch Us Your Idea For The Best Super Bowl Commercial Ever. Seriously." contest, which is being produced and will air during next week?s Super Bowl; and now, Kevin Greene (this guy not the former Steeler, Ram and Panther below)is one of the semi-finalists on NBC?s "Grease: You're the One That I Want." reality show. Kevin is one of six male contestants competing for the lead role of Danny. I have not watched the show, and I really do not want to promote it, but you can go online every Sunday evening from 8:55pm Eastern to 3:00am Eastern to vote for Greene.
