Micah Hoffpauir the Next Jack Cust?
2008-08-26 21:48:00
Micah Hoffpauir the Next Jack Cust? Micah Hoffpauir is a mashing 1B in the Cubs system, currently at AAA and blocked by Derrek Lee.  For a team looking for a lefthanded masher, Hoffpauir just might be 2008’s version of Jack Cust in Oakland.
Jack Cust Back From the Dead
2008-05-08 15:37:00
Jack Cust Back From the Dead Out of the graveyard and into fantasy players hearts, Jack Cust was recently named the AL player of the week. Its time to get back on the Cust bandwagon.
Jack Cust hits grand slam, solo shot in first 2 spring at bats for Athletic
2008-02-29 23:52:00
Tired and still recovering from an illness that kept him out of the lineup the previous day, Jack Cust was smiling and appeared content. This year he knows he has a job in the major leagues. Cust hit home runs in each of his first two at-bats and drove in five runs on Friday, a ...

Why Jack Cust is worth 1.2 runs fewer than Jack Cust.
2007-12-18 01:38:00
Turns out it’s a baserunning calculation issue.  Reversion of replacement level to Jack Cust excluded baserunning prowess.  Since Ur-Cust was a crafty 0/2 in the base theft department, and Replacement Definer Cust didn’t include that, well, -0.6 Runs x 2 equals…-1.2. But I think we’ve all had days where we feel about 1.2 runs less than our regular level of performance.
Most Effective Moves of 2007: American League
2007-09-27 00:15:00
Most Effective Moves of 2007: AL       As the season winds down, I’ve decided to look back on some of the best and worst of 2007. This time around, I’m going to touch on what I felt were the most effective off-season & in-season GM moves. Tomorrow will see the NL edition. The Indians Signing Joe Borowski I’ve written so extensively on this topic that it’s becoming annoying (Best Free Agent Signings 2007 Revisited). To sum it up quickly, the Tribe was in need of someone that could close out games at a low cost. Borowski fits this mold perfectly. Frequent readers of the MUD will know that I’m all about save percentage, not pretty ERA’s & WHIP’s from closers. The Indians will retain control of Borowski through their team option in 2008 (another brilliant move), making this, in my mind, the top move of the 2007 season. Jack Cust finally gets a chance Ok, injuries precipitated this happening, but we have to give credit where it’s ...
Bonds For Cust?
2007-09-09 17:43:00
Scott Ostler has a suggestion in today's San Francisco Chronicle: some kind of Barry Bonds for Jack Cust trade.  How would this work, with Bonds becoming a free agent after the season?  Cust, meanwhile, is under Oakland's control for another five seasons or so. Cust has easily been the Athletics' most valuable hitter this year, despite spending April in the minors.  Bonds' season currently ranks 16th among all hitters for VORP even in only 458 plate appearances. The Giants have a chance to save $700,000 this year by keeping Bonds from reaching 525 plate appearances.  It'll probably go right down to the wire.  Preventing him from reaching the last incentive would seem petty, and could mark the end of Barry's long relationship with the team.  Problem is, no one can figure out another team that would have him.
Jack Cust homers twice to lead Oakland Athletics past Chicago White Sox 4-3
2007-08-15 06:54:00
Jack Cust hit solo home runs in his first two at-bats to help Lenny DiNardo win his fourth straight decision, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Tuesday night. Cust homered in the first and again leading off the fourth for his 19th and 20th home runs of the season and ...
The Next Jack Cust?
2007-06-21 23:22:00
Jacob Jackson has an absorbing article up over at The Hardball Times. Jackson tries to find the next Jack Cust in the minor leagues.  Cust is a fascinating story this year. Also, I don't know how one gazes in awe at a radio show - but I will be appearing on Sportszilla Live this Sunday evening. I agree - come on. Random thought: I love when a baseball TV broadcast accidentally picks up something a player says.  I just heard Jeff Kent curse at an umpire in Toronto.  By the way, why did I wait so long to sign up for MLB.TV?
Jack Cust : Odd man out?
2007-06-21 18:23:00
Jack Cust : Odd man out? With Mike Piazza on the road to recovery, what will the Oakland A’s do with Jack Cust? Jack has been so good in his role that’s he’s forced a change of course with Mike Piazza, leading Piazza to resume catching duties and act as a DH and now a backup catcher.  Currently, the A’s are taking ...
Jack Cust (OF-OAK)
2007-05-15 22:06:00
Cust had a huge week for the A's after being recalled from AAA. Cust is 9-26 with six home runs while filling in for Mike Piazza at DH. Cust is just 28 and was once considered a top prospect. Cust is a must-add in AL-only leagues.
Is Jack Cust the next Ryan Howard?
2007-05-15 17:30:00
Is Jack Cust the next Ryan Howard?   Stick with me, I?m going somewhere with this.   Ok, post teaser. I am in no way implying that Jack Cust will hit 50+ home runs. So, what exactly am I saying? Well, Ryan Howard was stuck behind Jim Thome for years in Philly. During this time all he did was mash. At age 24, Howard was busy creating an OPS of over 1.000 between AA & AAA (including a .604 SLG in AAA) and was rewarded with only a late season call-up. At 25, he found himself back in AAA, with a 1.157 OPS. He was only given a chance with the Phils after an injury sidelined Thome mid-way through the 2005 season. Howard had to wait until 2006, at the age of 26 to get a full-time gig. Jack Cust was drafted in 1997 and despite slugging his way throughout the minors, he was traded and released numerous times. During this time, his longest MLB stint was 73 AB in 2003. All the while, Cust was racking up homers (196 career minor league HR) and building a top notch OPS (.943 career minor le...

Jack Cust

Has there been anoyone happier than A's GM Billy Beane after swinging a trade of a PTBNL for perennial Moneyballer Jack Cust? Yeah. The fantasy owner who picked him up last week! One week later, and Cust has rewarded that lucky owner with a week that'd make Barry Bonds envious - 6 HRs, .469 OBP and 1.077 SLG! I was going to run his career numbers in this post, but there are so many of them that I put them inside this post. Cust can clealry take walks. The question is whether he can sprinkle enough hits, mainly HRs, between the strikeouts to stay in the line-up.
