Jack Wilson Lands On DL; Bixler Called Up
2008-04-06 14:41:00 While Jack Wilson being placed on the DL affects only those in 18-team mixed leagues, his replacement, Brian Bixler might be someone to watch.Bixler is one of the Pirates prospects who stole 28 bags last year in AAA Indianapolis. It's unknown how long Wilson will be out for with his strained calf, but keep an eye on Bixler if he starts stealing some bases.

Jack Wilson Staying Or Going?
2007-09-09 19:21:00 Dejan Kovacevic and Rob Biertempfel both spoke to Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson recently. While the quotes gathered from each aren't mutually exclusive, they don't seem to gel when compared. The main point of Kovacevic's section on Wilson is that he would like to stay in Pittsburgh, mainly because of the change in management. Biertempfel had an extended Q&A with Wilson. With him, Wilson speaks of a "very good possibility" this is his last season as a Pirate. The shortstop has been mulling over some kind of goodbye to Pirates fans at the last home game this year. Wilson's OPS was down to .641 on July 28th. But in 99 ABs since, Wilson hit .414/.474/.677 to raise his overall OPS to a more respectable .757. The hot streak might make the shortstop's contract go down a little more easily for another GM. Wilson makes $6.5MM in '08 and $7.25MM in '09. He has an $8.4MM option for 2010 with a $600K buyout attached. Wilson ca...

Jack Wilson Will Waive No-Trade Clause
2007-08-04 18:01:00 Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson has a six-team limited no-trade clause, but he recently let the team know that he'll waive it for any deal. Apparently he just wants out of Pittsburgh. Dejan Kovacevic isn't sure if the team has placed him on waivers yet. But I'm sure they will and he should get through unclaimed. As far as I've read, almost every player in baseball is put on waivers in August just to mask those that the team is actually trying to trade. There's no risk to this because you can pull a player back if he's claimed. Kovacevic says talks with the Tigers about Wilson are still ongoing. Bucco Blog had heard that Jair Jurrjens and Brent Clevlen were involved also.

Culture Club
2007-08-04 08:06:00 In preparation for his latest column, Bob Smizik of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette dug deep within himself, utilizing every iota of his baseball acumen, to determine the root of the long-suffering Pirates' problems. Here's what he came up with:Forget about the CEO, what Pirates need most is an exorcistYou're probably thinking that Mr. Smizik is just being playful, tongue-in-cheekily acknowledging, but simultaneously ignoring, the real reasons behind the Pirates' failures, while throwing a crazy alternative theory out there to show us his wry sense of humor about the whole affair. Don't blame you; I know I did, until I read the rest of the article. The most difficult challenge facing the Pirates' next CEO will not be upgrading the team's current talent level or expanding the Latin American base of operation or persuading owner Bob Nutting to increase the payroll significantly. Those are only secondary issues to what makes the Pirates perennial losers.I'd say those issues are act...
Jack Wilson May Still Be Dealt
2007-08-03 23:02:00 Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported yesterday that the Tigers and Pirates continue to discuss shortstop Jack Wilson. Passing Wilson through waivers shouldn't be a problem; no team would want his entire contract dumped on them. Kovacevic describes the current state of the deal: "One source intimately familiar with the matter said that a deal was virtually done Tuesday and that the Pirates would receive two of Detroit's top six prospects, including an unnamed pitcher ready to join the major-league staff. But the sides haggled on how much of Wilson's contract the Pirates would pick up, the source added, and the delay was on." Kovacevic's report doesn't mention it, but there has to be more going to Detroit than just Wilson. Probably one of the Pirates' relievers, a group that was oddly retained at the deadline. Such an addition might compel the Tigers to take on most or all of Wilson's contract. But who are the two...

Tigers Could Acquire Jack Wilson
2007-07-31 19:36:00 UPDATE: My source may have jumped the gun here, because talks are still ongoing. UPDATE: An insider tells me Wilson has indeed just been traded, though he could not confirm the recipient or any details yet. According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson may be traded to the Tigers today. Wilson and his agent were getting phone calls about possible deals all day yesterday, making a trade seem likely. The Tigers wouldn't assume all of the $16.3MM Wilson still has coming to him through the 2009 season. But they might eat a larger portion of it if the Pirates throw in one of their relievers - Shawn Chacon, Damaso Marte, or Salomon Torres. The plan: use Wilson as a middle infield defensive replacement this year and make him the starting shortstop next year, moving Carlos Guillen to first base. Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press adds that Wilson has a limited no-trade clause, but would probably wave it to finall...

Trade Rumor - Jack Wilson to the Detroit Tigers?
2007-07-31 01:46:00 Last year, the Tigers inexplicably acquired utility fielder Neif Perez from the Cubs. This season, the Tigers are on the prowl for another player like Perez. Whether it's a superstituous thing or not following last year's World Series appearance, today's Detroit Free Press made a compelling case for the Pirates' Jack Wilson. One name to keep in mind is Jack Wilson. His future with Pittsburgh is in doubt after the Pirates acquired Cesar Izturis from the Chicago Cubs, even though Wilson is in the first season of a three-year, $20.2-million contract. Plenty of signs point to a potential fit between Detroit and Pittsburgh: Tigers president/general manager Dave Dombrowski is a longtime friend of Pirates GM Dave Littlefield, and the two worked on a deal for Sean Casey at this time last year. Leyland scouted games in Pittsburgh while working for the Cardinals, so he has watched Wilson play. And, most important, Wilson passes the defense-first test. Wilson is a better hitt...

Pirates Ask For Glaus In Jack Wilson Deal
2007-07-23 16:57:00 The Pirates are shopping shortstop Jack Wilson, and the Blue Jays are known to be interested. One would expect the Bucs to be happy with the salary relief and maybe ask for a token prospect. Instead, Dave Littlefield asked about Troy Glaus. Now, it was just an inquiry, and the Jays quickly shot it down. Obviously we don't know how the phone call went, so Littlefield might've devised a reasonable trade scenario involving additional players. The Pirates could definitely use a big bat like Glaus, but he does not seem likely to approve a trade to Pittsburgh even if the two sides did agree on the players. It's hard to tell just how available Glaus is, but a recent report indicates that he can be had. A return to the Angels still seems most likely.

A Team in Denial
2007-07-20 17:53:00 The Pittsburgh Pirates are currently occupying their customary place in the standings, 14 games under .500, a mere half game out of the NL Central cellar. Yet as far as I can tell, they remain blissfully unaware of their predicament. Someone should tell them.Several players involved in that Tuesday meeting between manager Jim Tracy and his team leaders confirmed yesterday at PNC Park, where the Pirates' losing streak reached a season-high six with a 5-3 clubbing by the Colorado Rockies, that their declared objective is to finish above .500 for the first time since 1992.Eighty-two wins. The Pirates have 40 wins on July 20th. They haven't been unlucky; according to BP's adjusted standings, they should really be 39-55. They're definitely not making a major deadline acquisition (Cesar Izturis doesn't count). They're a bad team, plain and simple. A bad team that actually convened a meeting to declare their commitment to an impossible goal."That's it ... 82. That's our main goal fo...
Slick-Fielding Shortstops Available
2007-07-16 21:35:00 If you're looking for an all-glove type shortstop this summer, you have plenty of options. The Giants could move Omar Vizquel, but only if they feel that he can't help them in '08. According to Tim Brown, he loves the city and would stay if they made an offer. The Giants talked extension with him in March but his offensive performance this year may have changed their mind. He has $1.8MM in salary left. With Ryan Theriot performing OK this year and Ronny Cedeno tearing up Triple A, the Cubs may deem Cesar Izturis expendable. Giving Cedeno the starting shortstop job to begin last year was questionable, but it might make some sense now. Izturis makes another $1.8MM this year, plus probably another $300K to buy out his '08 option. Juan Uribe may no longer deserve the slick-fielding tag, but he's been an awful hitter so I have to call him something. Even his customary low OBP/decent SLG is slipping. His salary situation is pretty much the s...

Could Bucs Trade Jack Wilson?
2007-06-14 23:15:00 The Pirates have benched shortstop Jack Wilson in favor of Jose Castillo for the time being, and Pirate fans are quite pleased with the decision. Wilson, 29, is signed through 2009. Here's his contract situation: 2007: $5.25MM2008: $6.5MM2009: $7.25MM2010: $8.4MM club option with $0.6MM buyoutLimited no-trade clause: Wilson can block trades to six teams each season Is Wilson a $7MM player? He is if you really like his defense. Yahoo's Tim Brown spoke to a baseball man who seemed to think there would be interest in Wilson. I don't know. His defense had better be really, really good to put up with a sub-.700 OPS. Cesar Izturis could do that, and the Cubs probably won't exercise his $5.45MM option for '08. I was going to list some possible suitors here but I can't really think of any teams in need of an overpriced, all-glove/no-hit starting shortstop.
