Who will be the NEXT Jacoby Ellsbury?
2008-06-07 05:17:00
Millions of people across Red Sox Nation cheered as the rookie from Madras, Oregon stole second in the 2007 World Series to win everyone a Taco! The cheered as he slugged homers and denied same, as the Sox marched to their second title in 3 years. The 2008 MLB draft wrapped up today. When the ...
Of panic buttons, home runs, getting caught, and thongs
2008-05-20 02:12:00
Little more than 30 minutes before tipoff and a few topics to consider. It?s only May, and are the Blue Jays pushing the panic button? Looking to keep pace in the AL East the Jays used ace Roy Halladay in relief last night. Toronto topped the Phillies 6-5. Halladay pitched two and a ...

Why Jacoby Ellsbury Can Compete...a Dude with Duende
2008-04-22 10:30:00
It matters little whether we talk basketball, baseball, football, checkers, or chess...strength up the middle remains a precursor for success. I have no interest in reputation over production. And I do not believe in enshrining unproven players in the pantheon of greatness. But I do believe not only in Platonic but Aristotlean truth. The simple truth reveals itself day by day, that Jacoby Ellsbury can compete with the best in the American League for an All-Star outfield berth. At 24 Ellsbury has the raw athletic tools with an incomplete skill set for greatness. Yet even an embryonic Ellsbury produces. Despite an early season platoon in Boston's outfield, Ellsbury is second in the AL in runs scored (16), second in stolen bases (8), and his .444 on base percentage would be among the league leaders if he had sufficient plate appearances. Even with training wheels technique on the bases, Ellsbury is on pace to steal nearly 70 bases, something unheard of in station-to-station baseball Bo...

Question 1: Should Jacoby Ellsbury replace Coco Crisp?
2008-03-27 14:03:00
I thought this was a no-brainer. In fact, I thought this back in September of 2007. But after the mail I got, mostly negative, when I inferred the Coco Crisp doesn’t have the makeup for playing in Boston, I wonder if I am going overboard on Jacoby Ellsbury. Honestly, I was shocked so many people ...
Jacoby Ellsbury Continues to Impress
2008-03-09 06:28:00
Jacoby Ellsbury will be an intriguing option for many fantasy managers this season. Often compared to Johnny Damon, Ellsbury batted .353 with 9 steals in just 33 games last season. The 24-year old was rumored to be a part of several offers for Johan Santana, but it appears that the rookie will lead off for one of the best lineups in Major League Baseball. On Saturday Ellsbury added to his case...

Jacoby Ellsbury IS NOT On The Trading Block...READ ON!!
2007-12-20 12:08:00
The Red Sox front office, consisting of Theo Epstein and company, are making sense. They know right now, in their back and forth, off and on and off again recent dealings with the Minnesota Twins about their ace lefty Johan Santana, that they are dealing from a position of strength, NOT NEED. So it seems that Jacoby Ellsbury, our centerfielder for many years to come, is NOT ON THE TABLE ANY MORE! And I applaud that decision. Minnesota, YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE. Now deal with the latest offerings, or go hungry after the 2008 season. Because you'll have a hole in your roster, a gap that could have been so preventable. I sound like your dentist....no, NO....read this...."From the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Charley Walters (Dec. 19): "The Boston Red Sox remain the favorite to acquire Johan Santana from the Twins, insiders say. Boston remains firm, though, as initially reported by the Pioneer Press, in offering just Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson. The Red Sox are adama...

Johan Santana Looking For $140MM?
2007-12-14 16:31:00
Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports today that Johan Santana's agent has told teams interested in trading for his client that the cost of an extension will be around seven years, $140MM.  We'd previously seen estimates in the six-year, $120MM range. Hartman reports that the Twins are still hoping for the Red Sox to surrender both Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz for Santana.  Not likely. showad();
Coco Crisp's Agent Speaks
2007-12-08 06:25:00
Coco Crisp's agent, Steve Comte, supplied all sorts of quotes to the Boston Herald's Rob Bradford.  Covelli's not a fourth outfielder, he's better than Jacoby Ellsbury, he's a proven commodity, stuff like that.  It was interesting to read, and you can see where Crisp and Comte are coming from.  But it doesn't really change anything, because if the Red Sox don't trade Crisp and he wants his $4.75MM next year, he's going to have to live with a reduced role. Bradford mentions that the White Sox, A's, Rangers, and Braves have inquired on Crisp.  The Padres, Twins, and Orioles have also been connected to him. showad();

Red Sox rookie star Jacoby Ellsbury gets hometown hero?s welcome
2007-11-17 22:19:00
Boston Red Sox rookie Jacoby Ellsbury came home to a hero’s welcome Saturday after a meteoric six-month rise from Double-A prospect to World Series standout. “I need a basketball,” the 24-year-old Ellsbury said before wading into the roaring crowd that filled the gym of Madras High School, where the newly minted big-league star lettered in basketball, ...

Big Papi, Ellsbury Garner Some Awards
2007-10-02 02:35:00
Two members of the Red Sox picked up some hardware from MLB on Monday. During the month of September, Big Papi was 36 for 91 (.396) ...
Sunday Morning Santana
2007-09-30 17:40:00
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe discusses the names being thrown around for Johan Santana.  As well as the Kemp/Kershaw for Santana, Cafardo quotes an AL Executive: One AL executive theorized, "There are a few teams who could match up with the Twins. Would the Yankees deal Melky Cabrera and an Ian Kennedy for Santana? How about Boston? Would they send a Clay Buchholz and a Jacoby Ellsbury for him? The Mets? There are few teams who could handle the paycheck you'd have to give Santana and also be able to part with key prospects."If that logic is correct, it narrows the list of suitors considerably. MLBTR readers made the astute point in the Kemp/Kershaw comments that if a team is going to give up two Major League-ready prospects, the deal would be contingent on a re-signing of Santana.  A one year rental is most likely not going to appeal to any GM handing over otherwise untouchable commodities such as a Buchholz/Ellsbury or a Kennedy/Cabrera or a Kemp/Kershaw. W...

Red Sox Continue Discussions For Dye
2007-07-28 18:24:00
UPDATE: The Chicago Tribune cites two factors for the non-trade - a disagreement over the players involved and Dye's lack of desire to go to Boston.  The Hartford Courant adds that Kenny Williams demanded either Clay Buchholz or Jacoby Ellsbury. UPDATE 2: Could the Phillies be the third team, working Michael Bourn into the mix somehow? Ken Rosenthal has updated this post with some information regarding Boston's ongoing pursuit of Jermaine Dye. Apparently Dye was willing to waive his no-trade clause for some performance bonuses and a guarantee of playing five days a week.  A third club would've been needed to somehow facilitate the deal Kenny Williams wanted.  Rosenthal says talks are ongoing. Tough to figure out how the Red Sox would pull off the five days a week thing.  Dye has rarely played any positions other than the outfield corners.  (Though he did play a game each at first base and shortstop in '05 when the Sox were in a pinch). If you consider D...
Buehrle's Counteroffer Rejected
2007-07-08 04:12:00
More Buehrle!  You know you love it.  According to Buster Olney, Mark Buehrle's camp proposed an alternative to the full no-trade clause contract.  Buehrle's side asked for the same four-year, $56MM deal, but with a $17MM player option for 2012 that would kick in in the event of a trade.  That'd put Buehrle's deal on par with Roy Oswalt's.  The White Sox rejected the counteroffer. Ken Rosenthal confirms the info.  There must be something the Sox don't like about Buehrle, or some secret rebuilding plan in the near future.  The fact remains that the team rejected a heavily discounted contract to retain their 28 year-old ace.  It's damn near inexcusable to me, and I'm not even a Sox fan. We've been down this road before - but it really looks like a trade is coming in the near future.  Phil Rogers mentioned Kenny Williams's affinity for Jacoby Ellsbury of the Red Sox and Carlos Gomez of the Mets.  Gomez will be out for four to...
Jacoby Ellsbury
2007-07-02 17:28:00
The Red Sox recalled their top hitting prospect, CF Jacoby Ellsbury, on Saturday to replace Coco Crisp. With the trade deadline fact approaching, baseball fans will get a look at the player who was rumored to be included in a Mark Beurhle trade just a week or so ago. Ellsbury's offensive game revolves around getting on-base and using his speed. Those are two qualities that are always welcome despite the Moneyball notion that stealing bases is a vestigal skill from a long gone era. One need only glance to the Left Coast and Reggie Willits to see the potency of that unique skill set. There is one major difference between the two players. Ellsbury's Contact Rate (CR) is higher than Willits' minor league one, 87% versus 81%. Is that enough for Red Sox fans to conclude Ellsbury is going to be as good as Reggie Willits? Probably. Is it enough for non-Red Sox fans to conclude similarly? Probably not. Some smaller differences in Ellsbury's favor are his age and the ballparks he has play...

Hellenic Flu hits: Finally, Jacoby Ellsbury arrives
2007-06-30 23:35:00
It was bound to happen in August or at the very least September, but let’s be honest, the leadoff position has been a gorilla on the Red Sox backs and apparently it’s time to see if Jacoby Ellsbury is ready. The Sox announced earlier today that Ellsbury was being called up from Pawtucket to fill the ...
