is currently leading all National League shortstops in All-Star voting. With more than a month to go, Hanley has 268,386 votes — a ~12K vote lead over second place, and now 2-years older, Miguel Tejada of the Astros. Considering how few people show up at Joe Robbie Stadium, it looks like ...

Outfielder Jacque Jones, cut by Detroit two weeks ago, reached a minor league deal with the Florida Marlins on Monday and is expected to soon become their starting center fielder. Welcome Jacque Jones

Jacque Jones is now officially a member of the Florida Marlins (yes, please help us build his wiki page). 11 months ago we tried to get him from the Cubs but a last minute veto from Cubs ownership killed the deal. Jones signed a minor league deal and will report to Jupiter ...
Jacque Jones Signs With Marlins
2008-05-19 10:47:00
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and Mike Phillips of the Miami Herald, Jacque Jones has reached a contract agreement with the Marlins.  It's a no-risk move for the first place Fish, who will pay him the pro-rated league minimum.  Jones, 33, hit .165/.244/.253 in 90 plate appearances for the Tigers. Rosenthal and Phillips seem to disagree on Jones' role.  Rosenthal says Jones will be a fourth outfielder and bench bat and notes that he'll begin at extended spring training.  Phillips sees Jones as the team's starting center fielder.
With Ramirez Inked, Marlins Looking At Jacque Jones
2008-05-10 17:19:00
On the verge of signing (some say signed) shortstop Hanley Ramirez to a $70MM, 6-year deal, the Marlins are not standing pat. Citing three team sources, MLB.com beat writer Joe Frisaro says the Marlins remain interested in Jacque Jones, who was released by the Tigers on Monday. And a "high-ranking team source" told Frisaro the Marlins will entertain moves to upgrade if the team continues its strong start. If the Fish do sign Jones, the Marlins could shift Alfredo Amezaga to the infield (at least as a backup). Jones could also serve as a leadoff man now that Ramirez has been dropped to the third slot in the batting order. Say what you will about their "fire sales," the Marlins have been active on the trade front in years past, acquiring via trade key players (Ugueth Urbina, Jeff Conine) that had instrumental roles during their last World Series championship. When not taking final exams, Alejandro Leal writes for UmpBump.com
Marlins Going After Jacque Jones?
2008-05-07 02:35:00
We tried it a couple of years ago so it’s not surprising that the Marlins are interested in Jacque Jones, who was recently designate for assignment by the Detroit Tigers (who probably first acquired Jones because they heard the Marlins wanted him). In the near term it may make sense but one Josh Willingham comes back ...
Padres, Marlins Interested In Jacque Jones
2008-05-06 20:52:00
According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins and Padres have inquired on recently designated outfielder Jacque Jones.  The Tigers, on the hook for $3MM of Jones' salary this year, would obviously prefer a trade. Many Padres are not hitting, including outfielders Jim Edmonds and Scott Hairston.  Jones might not hit for much power anymore, but he can play a quality center field. The Fish nearly acquired Jones last summer.  They haven't gotten much out of Alfredo Amezaga and Cody Ross in center, and left fielder Josh Willingham is on the DL with a sore lower back.  The Marlins are just a game back in the NL East.

Jacque Jones?
2008-05-05 22:44:00
Detroit outfielder Jacque Jones was released today.  He hits left-handed and is a good defensive player, though has misplaced his power since hitting 27 homers in 2006. Should Jones be on Seattle’s radar?  He may be, as they tried to get him last time he was a free agent, and he almost fits the bill of what they should ...

Tigers Release Jacque Jones
2008-05-05 16:59:00
According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers released outfielder Jacque Jones today.  Jones, 33, received only 90 plate appearances before the Tigers gave up on him.  He makes $5MM this year, of which the Cubs are paying $2MM.  Given Jones' ability to play all three outfield positions, he shouldn't have a problem finding a new team.

Cubs trade Jacque Jones for Omar Infante
2007-11-13 00:21:00
According to this, the Chicago Cubs have traded Jacque Jones to the Detroit Tigers for Utility Man Omar Infante.  I'm going to Detroit!   Get ready to cheer this man. Or whatever. Career Lines: Omar Infante:  .253/.298/.386.  That's an OPS of .684, and an adjusted OPS of 81.     Jacque- Jones:  .280/.329/.455.  That's a career OPS of .784.  Keep in mind, JJ is an outfielder.   &n-bsp; For perspective, Ryan Theriot's line last year was .266/.326/.346, for an OPS of .672, and an adjusted OPS of 72.  So, another utility man.  This probably means that DeRosa is expected to stay at 2nd and when needed, Infante can come off the bench.  But don't be surprised if Infante battles Theriot for some time at SS, provided he can improve his defense.

Jacques Jones for Omar Infante?
2007-11-10 19:17:00
An MLBTR reader passed on this tidbit he heard on ESPN 1000's coverage of the GM meetings.  The rumor would be the Cubs sending Jacques Jones to Detroit for Omar Infante.  The report mentioned both sides are staying in touch on the matter.  It's not major news, but if it's whispered... Infante's listed as an infielder, spending most of his time at 2B.  He made $1.3MM in 2007 and he'll be 27 next season.  The Tigers have a bit of a logjam in their infield as is and despite being regarded as a utility-guy, Infante has potential starter value that the Tigers could shop.  Jones, the established outfielder, makes $5MM in his final contract year next season and will be 32.  Trading Jones would open up the Cubs OF for Kosuke Fukudome, should they pursue him. showad();
Long Shot: Willis Back To Cubs?
2007-07-30 07:39:00
Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus has an interesting note in today's Rumor Mill: "The Cubs also still covet Dontrelle Willis as "the one that got away" and--despite his not being on the market--Willis is one player the Cubs could get if Larry Beinfest suddenly changes his mind about that. Adding Felix Pie to Jacque Jones and Donald Veal would get it done, while not adding to the Cubs payroll." Jim Hendry already tried to patch up one of the all-time classic Cub mistakes by signing Greg Maddux before the 2004 season.  At least that departure didn't happen under Hendry's watch.  Back in March of 2002, Hendry traded Ryan Jorgensen, Jose Cueto, Julian Tavarez, and Willis to the Marlins for Matt Clement and Antonio Alfonseca.  Where are they now? Jorgensen, a catcher, had a four-game cup of coffee for the Fish in '05, and now toils for the Reds' Triple A team. Cueto, a pitcher, never made it past Double A and finished off his career back in the ...
Latest From Baseball Prospectus: Jacque, Snell
2007-07-23 18:17:00
Will Carroll and John Perrotto have teamed up at BP to join the rumor mill, and yesterday's post is free to nonsubscribers.  Some highlights: Carroll reports that the Cubs could swap Jacque Jones and a prospect for Jeff Conine.  Perhaps such a move would be in tandem with Adam Dunn leaving Cincinnati.  The Cubs might want to hold on to Jones though; he's playing well lately. Carroll heard a far out Alex Rodriguez to the Dodgers rumor, but doesn't buy it.  Neither do I - the Yankees don't seem to be selling.  Carroll says Brian Cashman and Co. will wait until the last second to make a buyer/seller decision.  There's a slight chance Jorge Posada becomes available if they choose the latter. Perrotto confirms a rumor that surfaced a week ago, that Ian Snell could be had for the right bat.  Perrotto would know, as he spent time as a Pirates' beat writer.  Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Matt Kemp are two possible targets for the Bucs. The Tigers may...
Twins Rumors: Torii Hunter, Jacque Jones
2007-06-28 22:14:00
One club that doesn't get a lot of play on MLBTR is the Twins.  They don't make a lot of big trades or signings.  Although last year they did inquire on Alfonso Soriano.  Today, we don't have any blockbusters, but do have rumors regarding Torii Hunter and Jacque Jones from La Velle Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Regarding Hunter - he is leaving the door open for a contract extension with the Twins.  He told a radio station yesterday he doesn't want Vernon Wells money but the Twins still haven't talked to him about an extension at all.  He sounds bummed about it, but it just doesn't seem likely the Twins can retain Hunter.  He's going to need more than three years and more than $12MM annually.  The Twins aren't in a position to give him even a reasonable discounted contract. Meanwhile, Neal reveals that the Twins were previously in on Jacque Jones.  That would've been an interesting re-acquisition.  However, the Cubs pu...
Marlins Trade For Jacque Jones Nearly Dead
2007-06-26 22:25:00
UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal says this deal has pretty much died.  I knew $1MM sounded too good to be true for the Cubs.  Scott Miller of CBS Sportsline has more details: the Cubs were set to pay roughly 97% of Jones' remaining salary but the deal unraveled at the Commissioner's Office.  It seems that the Cubs couldn't get approval there because of their impending sale. PREVIOUS RUMOR: According to Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins have traded for outfielder Jacque Jones.  Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post says the Cubs are kicking in only $1MM of the $7.1MM remaining on Jones' contract.  The Cubs will get a pitcher from Class A Greensboro, possibly 23 year-old lefty Graham Taylor. The Cubs' motivation is to free up a roster spot while paying less than half the money still owed to Jones.  Jim Hendry got the best of Larry Beinfest in the Derrek Lee/Hee Seop Choi deal, but Beinfest exacted his revenge two years later by steal...
Rumor: Marlins Acquire Jacque Jones From Cubs
2007-06-26 22:15:00
I’m getting word here at SporTech headquarters the Marlins have acquired a centerfielder from the Cubs by the name of Jacque Jones. No details on what we sent back if this deal actually went down. No details regarding this trade have surfaced yet so stay tuned. This is just in rumor mode. Personally this would ...
Jacque Jones Trade Near?
2007-06-24 18:40:00
According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times yesterday, the Cubs are trying to trade another position player by Monday so they can add a 12th pitcher. That position player probably is our good friend Jacque Jones.  Wittenmyer named the Padres, Rangers, and White Sox as interested parties.  Bruce Miles adds the Mets to the mix.  The Cubs would have to eat some of the $7.2MM or so remaining on Jones' contract, which runs through 2008.  Another option would be to move shortstop Cesar Izturis, who has about $2.6MM left on his deal (assuming his '08 option is bought out). Buster Olney yesterday mentioned that the Cubs were one of the teams in one Milton Bradley, in addition to the Yankees and Padres.  Bradley is still fair game, and the Cubs may be looking to replace Jones with him.
Cubs-Reds Griffey Rumor
2007-06-19 02:10:00
There's a Cubs-Reds rumor making the rounds, reportedly one that originated on The Score here in Chicago.  Obviously I can't catch all the radio rumors myself, so I rely on listeners to pass these along.  Since these rumors often spread like a game of telephone, consider this one dubious until confirmed. The rumor hitting my inbox repeatedly: the Cubs could send Sean Marshall and Jacque Jones to the Reds for Ken Griffey Jr.  Keep in mind, this one isn't even confirmed as a legitimate rumor. Whether or not this rumor has any legitimacy, let's discuss.  In Marshall I see a strong left-handed starter under the team's control through 2011.  He's improved his repertoire and should be a cog in the Cubs' rotation for years.  In other words, very valuable. Griffey is in the midst of another resurgence, but is at significant risk of injury at any given moment.  There's a chance playing right field reduces that, but I wouldn't bank on it.  Grif...
Jacque Jones?
2007-06-11 15:33:00
At MLB Trade Rumors, they write about the Jacque Jones to the Mets rumor:Jacque Jones has become something of a punchline for the commenters on this site. Cubs fans, who frequent MLBTR disproportionately, think he is worth something decent. Everyone else does not. Even as a Cubs fan I have to side with everyone else.Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times writes today:"The New York Mets are in the market for outfield help at a time when the Cubs are expected to renew their efforts to trade Jacque Jones."
Rosenthal's Latest
2007-06-05 03:55:00
Time for another Rosenthal column!  Some of this is just a writeup from his recent video; here's the new stuff. A little elaboration on the Adam Dunn to San Diego idea - Rosenthal throws Clay Hensley's name into the mix.  Hensley has had a rough couple of months, with a nasty blister, a groin strain, and some awful starts.  His 54% groundball rate would be a nice fit in Chicago or Cincinnati.  Another player I could see catching Wayne Krivsky's eye is Cla Meredith. The Cubs continue to shop Jacque Jones, hoping to slide Felix Pie in every day.  Pie is ready for the show, but the Cubs would like something to show for Jones.  He is earning $4MM this year and $5MM in '08.  It looked like a bargain after Jones hit .285/.334/.499 last year, but he's tanked in the Cubs' crowded outfield.  He could fit well with the Padres, a team that doesn't hit lefties or righties.  Jones normally just struggles with lefties.  Jacque was born in S...
Jacque Jones happy with another year with Cubs (AP)
2007-02-18 15:01:02
Even after a rough first season in Chicago, Jacque Jones felt right at home Saturday when he showed up at the Cubs’ spring training facility. The debate all winter in Chicago wasn’t whether Jones would play right field or center field for the Cubs, it was whether he’d play for the Cubs at all. Jones was widely considered to be unhappy in Chicago after a season in which the Cubs won only 66 games… Read the full story.
