Jamaican Sunday Lunch

Growing up, one of the things that I gradually began to realize set me aside from my friends and classmates was the fact that in my house Sunday lunch was never a ‘Trini’ affair. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world!!
2008-06-01 21:11:00
Jamaican runner, Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world! The 6′4″, 21-year old set a new world record of 9.72 seconds, last night in New York at the Reebok Grand Prix at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. The meet was reported to have been abuzz all night and felt like “Jamaica Night” with the overwhelming number of Jamaican fans who turned out to support Bolt. The Jamaican national anthem was even sung during a rain delay and reportedly the Jamaican fans went wild. Bolt who had previously only run the 100 meters four times (he normally runs the 200 meters), says he only began to run the 100 meters for speed practice and to improve his starts. This new “practice” plan landed him the second fastest time in history earlier last month, when he ran 9.76 in the 100 meters, which at the time was only .02 seconds off the former world-record holder Asafa Powell’s, 9.74. The stage is now set for Asafa and Usain to meet during the Jamaican ...

Did You Know They Were Jamaican?-Grace Jones
2008-05-29 00:19:00
Most of us remember Grace Jones from her crazy antics in Boomerang alongside that ageless diva, Eartha Kitt and Eddie Murphy, but did you know that she was born in Spanishtown, Jamaica on May 19, 1948 as Grace Mendoza? Grace along with her brother, ( world renowned minister Bishop Noel Jones) relocated with her parents to the US in the mid 60’s where she began a career first as a model and then a somewhat successful singer, primarily overseas, and even inked a record deal with Island Records. Known for her iconic stature, distinctive voice, and flair for all things extreme, Grace Jones has managed to transcend the limitations of time, gender, and race to become a legend in her own right.
The 2000 Jamaican women’s sprint team could be awarded gold medals by IOC
2008-04-10 07:15:00
The IOC (International Olympic Committee) wants to award the 2000 Olympic, Jamaican women’s sprint team, the gold medals for the 1600-meter and possibly the bronze medals for the 200-meter relays, after disqualifying not only Marion Jones but the entire US relay teams in both events for their performance in Sydney. All of this of course, is a result of Marion Jones pleading guilty to using steroids last year and returning all of her medals (she was officially stripped by the IOC in December and is currently serving a 6-month prison sentence here in Texas for perjury and check fraud). As a result of Jones’ cheating, all results for the races she competed in are now considered “tainted”. While no final decision has been reached, it’s believed that the IOC on Thursday will recommend that both US teams be disqualified. The US sprinters are refusing to give up their medals and have hired a lawyer to defend them. There are two more board meetings between now ...

2008-04-03 13:43:00
We now have a name for the face of Kevin Brown, the man whom officials held in custody on Tuesday at Orlando International Airport for attempting to check-in luggage which held bomb making explosives. His family is reporting that Brown was traumatized by his serving in two army missions in Iraq, and the questionable circumstances surrounding the death of his mother in 2005. While Brown was serving in Iraq, his mother Sandra McLeod was found murdered in the computer room of a hotel in Negril, an autopsy reported that she had been strangled. Three men have been charged with the murder. Brown told the FBI that he wanted to show friends how to build explosives like he saw in Iraq and planned to bomb a tree stump once he arrived in Jamaica, he was en route to visit his cousin in Montego Bay when he was arrested. MARK KENNY: BRINGING AUTHENTIC JAMAICAN TALENT TO THE MASSES
2008-03-29 14:06:00
The phenomena of Rising Stars and Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall have created a level of enthusiasm and an anticipation rarely seen in the history of television talent shows in Jamaica. Many do not know who the brainchild of these two massively popular shows is and even more interestingly, that he is not a native Jamaican. Born in Dublin Ireland, Mark Kenny has been an ardent fan of Jamaican music and culture since the 1970s. The professionally trained pianist became a convert to reggae after listening to the group 'Culture' who are credited with influencing the development of Punk Rock music in the 1970s. Kenny has developed a sophisticated appreciation of Jamaica's music and culture which is manifested in his work with Digicel Rising Stars and Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall. Kenny began his television career in 1990 as a producer with Animedia, one of Ireland's largest animation companies at the time. He excelled and went on to produce one of Irelan...

Louis Eugene Walcott was born on May 11, 1933 in the Bronx, NY to a mother who was a native of St. Kitts and Nevis and a father who was a Jamaican cab driver from New York (but was not active in his life). Norwegian Tourist Robbed by Jamaican Artist Kid Kurup
2008-02-01 19:00:00
Just yesterday a rumor broke about a tourist who had been ripped off by a popular deejay while on the island looking to do some investing. According to the rumor the tourist/ investor had been allegedly swindled out of millions of dollars and personal effects by the deejay after the two became close friends over time. So 876radio.com decided to do some investigating to find out if there was any truth to these claims. In an exclusive interview with 876radio.com, Mr. Erik Vad, a Norwegian native explained how it all happened. He said he came to Jamaica last year October looking for prospective investments. While on the island he rented a house in Discovery Bay, St. Ann where he stayed and one night while on the social scene he met Kid Kurup. Mr. Vad said at the time he seemed like a genuine person and so the friendship quickly developed to the point that he asked the deejay to be his driver (seeing he had rented a car but didn?t know the terrain well). He was paid for his servic...

I generally applaud myself for being enlightened about race. I should know better. The minute I pat myself on the back for being conscious, something happens to remind me that my view of race and nationality can be as narrow as anyone's.Did you know there is a thriving Chinese community in Jamaica? I didn't. In her latest post, Jennifer at Mixed Race America writes passionately about her Uncle Frank who, though he lived for years in the United States, never lost his connection to his homeland. For my Uncle, he would have told you that being Jamaican was in his blood (andhe wouldn't have cared if you quoted anti-essentialist rhetoric at him). Hislicense plate on his car read "rahtid," he cheered for the Jamaican soccer(excuse me, football) team every chance he got, the Jamaican flag and variationsof it (the Jamaican colors of black, green and yellow) adorned his home, Reggaemusic (and I don't mean Bob Marley--no disrespect intended, but my family tendsto scoff at Marley and think ...
