Snowfall blocks Srinagar-Jammu highway
2008-02-04 11:30:00 Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended on Sunday following landslides at Panthal and heavy snowfall at Patnitop and Jawahar tunnel, officials said. The highway is the only road link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country. Batote, Banihal and Qazigund on the highway recorded 11.8 mm, 9.6 mm and 6.2 mm of snowfall respectively, a Met official said. Meanwhile, the Valley received fresh snowfall on Saturday night following intense cold wave conditions. Kupwara was the coldest place in the State with minimum temperature plummeting to minus 6.8 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded minimum temperature of minus four degrees Celsius, while in Srinagar the minimum temperature dipped to minus 0.6 degrees Celsius. (ANI)

NREGA implemented in Jammu and Kashmir

State Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Mula Ram told a press conference here that the Act would now be implemented in the entire State for the enhancement of livelihood security of the households of rural areas. He said with the re-organisation of the districts in the State, nine districts have been covered under this scheme whereas 13 remaining districts would be covered from April 1 this year. (ANI)

Four militants killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir
2008-01-21 14:11:00 Four militants were killed in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday in two separate encounters with security forces in Kupwara and Shopian Districts. Police was working on a tip off at Alaypore village in Shopian. Two militants who were hiding in a house opened fire at the security forces and were killed in the exchange of fire, official sources said. According to official sources search was on in the area till last report came in. Two more militants were killed in another encounter with security forces at Mandigam village of Kupwara district. Identity of the encountered militants was being ascertained. (ANI)

2006-09-04 15:03:03 A local court today once again reserved till September 5 the judgement on the bail applications of former Jammu and Kashmir Ministers Ghulam Ahmed Mir and Raman Mattoo and others, accused in the sex racket case that had rocked the Valley.Principal Sessions Judge, Srinagar Mohammad Yaqoob Mir deferred the hearing on the bail applications of Mir, Mattoo and others till September 5.Moulvi Aijaz pleaded the case on behalf of the accused while the CBI was represented by public prosecutor R K Saini. The court also said all identical bail applications would be taken up on the same day. However, the main case would come up for hearing on September 9. Earlier on August 18, 21, 26 and 28 the court had four times deffered the hearing on the bail pleas. The court on August 17 had granted interim bail to senior IAS officer Mohammad Iqbal Khanday, another accused in the sex scandal, on medical grounds after 50 days of detention.
