For Jarrod Saltalamacchia, he'll enter the season as the primary catcher for the Red Sox. For him, he's looking forward to working with the entire pitching staff. He talked about that and more with Tom Caron and Peter Gammons on the NESN Live set at Fenway South in Ft. Myers, FL. Red Sox Avoid Salary Arbitration With Jarrod Saltalamacchia
2012-01-16 03:39:00
Seven more to go for new Boston Red Sox GM Ben Cherington to match his counterpart Theo Epstein in avoiding cases going to arbitration. So far he's avoided arbitration with Matt Albers, Andrew Miller and Ryan Sweeney. And now we can add Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the list. The Red Sox avoided arbitration with Salty on Sunday night by signing him to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. It's a big raise for Salty as he only made $750,000 last year. Salty took over as the every day catcher last year for the Red Sox and did a pretty good job. He got better defensively as the season went on and finished the season hitting .235 with 16 home runs, 56 RBIs and even stole a base. Cherington still has seven more contracts to work out to keep the streak alive. They are Alfredo Aceves, Mike Aviles, Bailey, Daniel Bard, Jacoby Ellsbury, Franklin Morales and David Ortiz. Jarrod Saltalamacchia Heating Up
2008-06-04 16:47:00
It is time to pick up Jarrod Saltalamacchia, as the hard-hitting catcher is finally earning more playing time. Just as the defensive-minded Gerald Laird has gone cold, the 23-year old slugger is heating up. In fact, Saltalamacchia has 4 multi-hit games in the past 6 contests. He has 3 homeruns and 11 RBI in a 10-game stretch. With the Rangers rolling these days offensively, it's a great time to...

Fantasy Odds: Jeff Baker, Carlos Gomez, Jarrod Saltalamacchia
2008-02-27 19:16:00
Rocky Mountain News reports converting-to-2B Jeff Baker has already emerged as the main competition for Jayson Nix at 2B.  I can't help thinking this was the Rockies' hope all along.  How can Baker have already surpassed Marcus Giles and Ian Stewart if the organization wasn't already predisposed to having Baker win the job? Recall Jeff Baker was a SS at Clemson University before moving over to 3B for Khalil Greene.  I wonder if he wouldn't already be the Rox' 2B if there wasn't such an ingrained progression for power bats to move to the outfield or 1B when they find themselves blocked at a position? * Two days after selecting Rays' LHP Scott Kazmir with my 6th round selection, he walks off the mound with some elbow issue.  My very first thought was, "I should have taken a hitter."  I don't know who that hitter should have been, but I know it should have been a hitter. Then I forced myself into some dissonance soothing and reminded myself that missing...

A Look At Jarrod Saltalamacchia
2007-12-26 20:53:00
Several young catchers are in line to score everyday jobs to begin the 2008 season.  The ones that catch my eye are Jarrod Saltalamacchia (Rangers), Geovany Soto (Cubs), Carlos Ruiz (Phillies), and J.R. Towles (Astros).  For the sake of comparison let's assume each gets 425 ABs.  We'll start with an evaluation of Saltalamacchia. Salty has the name value, and he posted a .266-11-33-39-0 line in 308 ABs as a rookie this year.  He's only 22, and he skipped Triple A.  If we just stretch his '07 line to 425 ABs we get .266-15-46-54-0, roughly the performance that A.J. Pierzynski had (11th best among catchers).  Projected to that same 425 ABs, ZiPS says .257-16-51-51-0.  Ron Shandler says .258-17-49-52-0.  There seems to be a consensus.  So you probably shouldn't take Salty over, say, Kenji Johjima or Bengie Molina.   His upside might put him past decliners like Jason Varitek and Ivan Rodriguez, though you could go either way on...
Rangers Rumors: DeJesus, Lamb, Millar
2007-11-04 04:42:00
Evan Grant writes for the Dallas Morning News, but he posted this column at night.  Go figure.  He's got some new info regarding the Rangers. As you know, the Rangers have had difficulty finding a long-term center fielder.  That's the main focus of this offseason.  The team has already shown interest in Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand, the top center fielders available.  Other free agents such as Andruw Jones and Mike Cameron appear to be in play as well.  Grant's trade candidates: Coco Crisp, David DeJesus, Mark Kotsay, and Carlos Beltran.  We've speculated on DeJesus to Atlanta in the past.  With DeJesus signed cheaply through 2011 and the market at the position robust this winter, it might make sense for Dayton Moore to wait a year to shop him aggressively. Grant adds that Jon Daniels is considering some affordable options for first base.  They've already talked to Mike Lamb's agent and like Kevin Millar as well.  Lamb came up...
New acquisition Jarrod Saltalamacchia helps Texas Rangers beat Oakland Athl
2007-08-08 08:07:00
Two of the Texas Rangers’ major acquisitions at the trade deadline gave their fans some hope that their latest rebuilding effort can be successful. Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in the tiebreaking run with a sixth-inning double and Kason Gabbard went six innings to earn his first win with Texas, leading the Rangers to a 8-6 victory ...
Jarrod Saltalamacchia (C-TEX)
2007-07-31 13:24:00
Saltalamacchia, 22, is hitting .284 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 141 at-bats. Scouts project him to hit .300 with 30 homers at the major league level. A catcher by trade, he has split time between catcher and first base. He reportedly has struggled defensively when playing first base.
Latest From Baseball Prospectus: Jacque, Snell
2007-07-23 18:17:00
Will Carroll and John Perrotto have teamed up at BP to join the rumor mill, and yesterday's post is free to nonsubscribers.  Some highlights: Carroll reports that the Cubs could swap Jacque Jones and a prospect for Jeff Conine.  Perhaps such a move would be in tandem with Adam Dunn leaving Cincinnati.  The Cubs might want to hold on to Jones though; he's playing well lately. Carroll heard a far out Alex Rodriguez to the Dodgers rumor, but doesn't buy it.  Neither do I - the Yankees don't seem to be selling.  Carroll says Brian Cashman and Co. will wait until the last second to make a buyer/seller decision.  There's a slight chance Jorge Posada becomes available if they choose the latter. Perrotto confirms a rumor that surfaced a week ago, that Ian Snell could be had for the right bat.  Perrotto would know, as he spent time as a Pirates' beat writer.  Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Matt Kemp are two possible targets for the Bucs. The Tigers may...
Rosenthal On Teixeira, Dunn
2007-07-20 23:38:00
I neglected to mention a Ken Rosenthal article from yesterday, chock full of rumory goodness as always. Rosenthal believes the Yankees need a backup plan in case they are not able to retain Alex Rodriguez.  Wilson Betemit definitely makes sense in that he'd be useful even if they do keep A-Rod.  Rosenthal basically names every third baseman you can think of.  The most likely option, to me, is to simply sign Mike Lowell as a free agent.  Would he switch sides?  Perhaps, if the Red Sox don't make an offer or try to lowball him. The Braves apparently won't give up Yunel Escobar or Jarrod Saltalamacchia to get Mark Teixeira.  Neither of 'em.  No doubt John Schuerholz will spend the next ten days trying to get Jon Daniels to settle for less. The Reds have a "co-Dunn-drum," as Rosenthal puts it.  Now that's good stuff.  The basic codunndrum here is that no team that can afford Adam Dunn wants him.  Rosenthal likes the Tigers...
Braves Want Young Impact Pitcher For Salty
2007-07-15 18:09:00
Back on June 24th, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette mentioned that the Pirates inquired as to the availability of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  At that point the required bounty was thought to be a frontline starting pitcher like Mark Buehrle. Today, Kovacevic clarifies: the Braves want an impact-caliber young pitcher.  That makes sense.  The Pirates have a couple of those: Tom Gorzelanny and Ian Snell.  They'd have to give one up to get Salty.  Such a trade would be excellent for Atlanta but wouldn't really seem to move the Pirates forward. While shaky in terms of confirmation, we do have one report that indicates the Pirates could trade Snell this month.  Snell is 25, healthy, and a long ways from free agency.  He's been the eighth best pitcher in the National League this year according to VORP.  Better than Roy Oswalt, Brandon Webb, Carlos Zambrano, or Cole Hamels.  It's been quite a breakout season for Snell, and h...
Pirates Inquire On Saltalamacchia
2007-06-24 17:19:00
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have inquired regarding the availability of Braves catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  Kovacevic says the Braves want frontline pitching for Salty (ie, Mark Buehrle).  This makes a deal unlikely for the Bucs.  What would John Schuerholz want from the Pirates?  I can't see how it would get done without Ian Snell or Tom Gorzelanny included.  A trade of either would be shocking.  Kovacevic mentions that multiple teams have an eye on Zach Duke, but he's not comparable to the aforementioned pair.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia
2007-05-03 04:24:00
Is it better to be right for the wrong reasons than right for the right ones?  In fantasy baseball, all that matters is being right.  The Braves recalled top prospect Jarrod Salatalamacchia just as I had recently mentioned it as a potential course of action following the Ryan Langerhans Give-Away. Unfortunately, I wasn't prescient enough to see a bat to the head of back-up catcher Branyan Pena which necessitated the move nor did I consider the pre-exisitng hand injury of Brian McCann.  However, I ask, "Why didn't the Braves bring-up a AAA filler like Corky Miller to cover what few games All-World Catcher Brian McCann may miss?" With McCann at catcher, Saltalamacchia has no path to full-time catching duties with the Braves.  He's 22-years-old and effectively out of a postion.  Fortunately, he has enough hitting skills to make a transition to first base. Is it too early?  There will be very few who say it isn't.  Can the Braves do it anyways? &nb...
