5/7/2010 - Jason Bay, Tampa Bay, Rangers and Giants
2010-05-07 23:39:00 A lot of strange things are going on in baseball this season but as strange as it may seem that Jason Bay is struggling, it's stranger still what we're seeing from the Rangers and Giants.

The Splits: Jason Bay, Matt Holliday
2008-05-23 11:31:00 So apparently, if I'm not struck with something brilliant for an article, I retreat to minor analysis of two players. I'm so thrilled to be bringing Bay and Holliday back together, because I still remember two years ago when the two were considered equal in fantasy circles. Times have certainly changed. I bring up the two because both share a similar home/away split. Bay and Holliday both hit much better in their home ballparks (this is a reversal of career trends for Bay in 2008 but right in line with Holliday's overall production). I bring this up also because both could potentially be traded. According to FanGraphs, the Rockies may shop Holliday if they continue to underperform, because his contract is up at the end of 2009 and he's represented by super-agent Scott Boras. Bay has been on the block in Pittsburgh for a while. What does all this mean? Let's talk about each player individually.Bay: As I stated, Bay's splits strongly favor hitting in PNC Park in 2008. He has 8...

Jason Bay is Frustrated; Neal Huntington is Right
2008-01-29 13:07:00 Good job by Neal Huntington last week. We’ve been back and forth on him this offseason, so here’s another check mark on the plus side. Pirates Pulled Out Of Bay To Cleveland Deal
2007-12-16 17:52:00 Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has some new information for us regarding an aborted Jason Bay deal. Kovacevic says the Bucs made a decision through the entire chain of command that Franklin Gutierrez, Kelly Shoppach, Cliff Lee, and a minor league pitcher wasn't enough for Bay and Ronny Paulino. This situation has been confusing to follow from the start, with plenty of conflicting information floating about. For instance, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes said on Wednesday that Lee and Shoppach were never involved in these talks - the Bucs wanted three to five of the Indians' top prospects. Before that there was that whole business about whether talks had occurred at the Winter Meetings and been revived. showad();

MLB Rumors: What Now In Baltimore and Jason Bay
2007-12-13 12:35:00 Today is going to be a day filled with steroids talk as Senator George Mitchell releases his report on steroids use in the sport of baseball. This is already reflected in this morning's newspapers to the near-exclusion of trade rumors. Whether that is more important is to be determined. Here are a couple of trade rumors anyhow. Peter Schmuck warns/offers hope to many by writing:Don't be surprised if pitching ace Erik Bedard is headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers or Seattle Mariners between now and the start of spring training. Don't be surprised if the Orioles give away Melvin Mora and Jay Payton or even pay someone to take them. Don't even be surprised if the Orioles pay a couple of other veteran players big bucks to stay home. Jeff Zrebiec hopes the Cubs' signing of Kusoke Fukudome will make the team more willing to give-up young OF prospects in a Brian Roberts package. If the Orioles could get Felix Pie and 2B Eric Patterson in a Roberts trade, on...

Bay, Pads Talks "Completely Untrue"
2007-12-13 00:49:00 We hear rumors earlier in the day that the Padres and Pirates were in "deep talks" regarding Jason Bay. Now, Dejan Kovacevic says that no such talks have occurred. This comes after the revelation that Chase Headley wouldn't be involved in any deal. The only talks between the two clubs, according to Kovacevic, have regarded catcher Michael Barrett. According to the source "those talks didn't expand beyond Barrett." -Joe

MLB Rumors: Johan Santana Update, Jason Bay Too!
2007-12-05 22:07:00 John Heyman of SI.com reports the Mets are trying to get into the Johan Santana competition. He also writes, "A source close to the Twins said they were awaiting bids from different teams late Tuesday night. Minnesota has continued to talk to Boston into Wednesday morning, but there's a sense they may not be overwhelmed by Boston's multiple offers." Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger writes the Red Sox are acting as if the Yankees are still involved. This appears to be a logical conclusion. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com says the mariners could be back in on Santana because "the Mariners, rival executives say, are intent on making a splash and acquiring a big-name starting pitcher, with Orioles lefty Erik Bedard another potential target." On the state of trade discussions with the Red Sox, Mr. Rosenthal writes, "The Red Sox still appear to be the most likely match for the Twins, but while the teams are maintaining a healthy dialogue, a source said they "are just not ma...

Bay To Indians Talks Revived, Then Dead Again?
2007-12-05 21:24:00 UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 2:24pm: The Indians and Pirates haven't even talked about Bay since the Meetings began. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 10:58am: Buster Olney says these talks are dead. FROM 12-5-07 at 7:35am: According to Dejan Kovacevic, the Indians felt pressured when they saw the division-rival Tigers trade for Miguel Cabrera. Their response was to restart their conversations with the Pirates for outfielder Jason Bay. A five-player trade is being discussed, apparently expanding upon the rumor originally reported by ESPN's Steve Phillips. The Bucs would send Bay and catcher Ronny Paulino for Franklin Gutierrez, Kelly Shoppach, and Cliff Lee. Looks like the Pirates are seeking MLB-ready guys, though they wanted prospects from the Rangers yesterday. Late last night it was also said that the Padres had jumped into the fray for Bay. It's decent value for Bay, who should really only be traded this winter if the Pirates feel his decline is for real. It's n...

White Sox Looking At Fukudome, Bay
2007-11-30 15:34:00 According to Ken Rosenthal, the White Sox have cooled on Aaron Rowand as they do not want to give him a five-year contract. Instead, they've set their sights on Kosuke Fukudome and Jason Bay. This isn't the first time they've been linked to Fukudome; Dan Graziano noted back in August that the Sox had scouted him. The White Sox could entertain using Fukudome in any of the three outfield positions. He could easily handle left field if Joe Crede is traded and Josh Fields plays third. He could probably get by in center. And he's probably better than Jermaine Dye in right, so maybe it would be Dye switching to left. New Pirates GM Neal Huntington perhaps hasn't made an impression on the team's fans yet. A Bay trade this winter will be big for him in terms of PR. It'd be a sell-low move, however. I do think the White Sox could throw something together to make it work. Meanwhile Mark Gonzales says the Sox still like Coco Crisp as a cen...

Indians, Orioles Looking At Bay?
2007-11-10 22:27:00 We first checked in on outfielder Jason Bay back in late September. Neal Huntington's comments seemed to indicate Bay could be dealt. He slumped to a surprising .746 OPS this year. Logically the Indians would be in the mix for Bay. He's affordable - he makes only $13.25MM over the next two seasons. And Huntington used to work for Tribe GM Mark Shapiro. Marty York backs up the speculation, saying the Indians are the most interested club. Another interested club is the Orioles, according to Bucco Blog. Jake mentions that teams are still trying to figure out why Bay declined in 2007. Bay has contended his surgically repaired knee only hindered him on the basepaths and defensively, not at the plate. A lack of passion has been suggested. And I hate to throw it out there based only on a statistical decline, but teams may be waiting to see if Bay's name appears in the Mitchell Report at all. showad();

What the Hell Happened to Jason Bay?
2007-11-05 18:21:00 Jason Bay Sucked in 07. Why? Here’s what I wrote prior to the beginning of the 2007 season; “I’d take Jason Bay ahead of the reigning AL MVP anyday. Jason has had no protection over the past three years, and yet he’s still produced. With Bay likely hitting in front of LaRoche and a healthy Nady, he’s more likely to see some pitches in the strike zone. Look for 40 HR, plus is usual 100 Runs, RBI’s, and walks.” If you’re still with me after that bonehead call, let’s try to find out what exactly happened to Bay in 2007. The first thing that you’ll notice in my comment is the optimism towards Bay finally getting protected in the line-up. Unfortunately, LaRoche was awful for the first three months of the season. I hardly think that this can be the cause of Bay’s woes. With that said, I do think that this could have been a tiny cause of Bay pressing at the plate. Tiny. Let’s move forward. Outside of the huge drop off across the board in power & OPS numbers,...

More on Jason Bay to the Twins
2007-10-27 17:13:00 Yesterday, Joe Nathan said his re-signing was contingent on the Twins remaining competitive. Today, Jake at Bucco Blog discusses a rumor to that fact: The Twins' interest in Jason Bay is real and hinges on whether or not they retain Torii Hunter. Tim breaks it down here. Hunter wants 5/75. The Twins are offering 3/45. If the they are serious about retaining him and Hunter in fact wants to stay then that discrepancy doesn't seem insurmountable. However, if Hunter leaves... Jason Bay had a down year (.248/.328/.420) and yet almost certain to be dealt by new Pirates co-GM's Neil Huntington and Bill Smith this winter. Shipping Bay is a launch pad for restructuring the Pirates' system. Tim notes the viability of a Bay for Matt Garza deal. He's signed for a mere $5.75MM in '08 and an only slightly less mere $7.5MM in '09, so the Twins would have no financial qualms if Hunter walks. Posted by Nat Boyle

Pirates Rebuilding, Shipping Bay?
2007-10-22 00:06:00 Pirates fans, get ready for some big changes. Rob Biertempfel reports:Over the new couple of weeks, the Pirates will hire a new manager, scouting director, director of player development and assistant general manager. The turnover could extend to coaches and scouts throughout the system.New facilities are rising in Bradenton, Fla., and the Dominican Republic. The club also plans to develop a leaner, more efficient data storage system. Red Sox Pitching Coach John Farrell is the reported favorite to be the Buc's skipper and Theo Epstein has been singing his praises, writes John Perrotto of the Beaver County Times:"John has brought so much to our organization," Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said. "He's brought a sense of accountability to the pitching staff and he is just so organized in everything he does. He prepares our pitchers both mentally and physically every day of the season. He is an extremely sharp guy and the only thing he lacks is much major-league experie...

The curious case of Jason Bay
2007-10-14 22:56:00 After having off season knee surgery, Jason Bay reported to spring training in 2007 and continued to rehab his knee for about a month before seeing his first game. During the first month of the season it became painfully obvious to the fans Bay's ability to cover the ball in his zone was limited. It became almost routine watching Bay casually jog instead of run. After joining the Pirates in 2004, Pirate fans watched in horror as Bay lobbed rainbow throw after rainbow throw to cutoff men. So many runners advanced on Bay that year that in 2005, Lloyd McClendon had Jack Wilson run all the way out to mid-leftfield to get Bay's throws. While that significantly reduced the number of advancing baserunners on Bay's plays, the fans started seeing another part of Bay's game come apart late that year - an inability to cover the ball in his zone. Jim Tracy was brought in as manager in 2006 and he played Bay in left despite the fact balls were falling in all over his zone during the year....

British Columbia: Baseball Hotbed
2007-10-13 21:58:00 British Columbia: Baseball Hotbed With Colorado Rockies’ pitcher Jeff Francis currently in the post-season spotlight, it got me to thinking of another stud Canadian Rockies (former)ballplayer - Larry Walker - and why all these new studs (Jason Bay, Adam Loewen, Rich Harden, Justin Morneau) are coming from beautiful British Columbia. First off, let’s talk about the aforementioned Jeff Francis. To give you loyal MUD readers a sense of just how scarce it has been for Canadian pitchers participating in baseball?s post season, here is something for you tothink about. With the Rockies’ win in Game 1 against Arizona, Jeff Francis posted his second consecutive playoff victory of the current season as a starter for the Colorado Rockies. It also made him the all-time leader in post season wins by a Canadian. With his first playoff win last week against the Philadelphia Phillies, the 26-year-old southpaw pulled into a tie for all-time post-season wins by a Canadi...

Twins Interested In Jason Bay?
2007-10-03 18:38:00 Bucco Blog reports that the Twins may have some interest in Pirates outfielder Jason Bay. It's possible the Bucs would want Matt Garza in return. It would be a blockbuster introduction for Neal Huntington and Bill Smith. It's always hard to part with young pitching (especially with the likely departure of Johan Santana), but the Twins have needed an offensive boost for a while now. Bay is signed for 2008-09 at just $13.25MM, so the Twins can definitely squeeze him into the budget. Garza looks like at least a #3, especially in the NL Central. This seems like a trade that could benefit both teams. Thoughts?

Pirates Could Shop Jason Bay
2007-09-27 23:41:00 Read between the lines in new Pirate GM Neal Huntington's recent comments, and it certainly seems like the Bucs might consider trading left fielder Jason Bay this winter. Bay wouldn't be surprised to go. The 29 year-old has experienced by far the worst season of his career this year. After posting OPSs above .900 in his first three seasons, he's down to just .748 this year (.248/.328/.420). He only really looked like himself in May. Back in December, Bay had arthroscopic knee surgery. However, Bay has said that this has only affected his explosiveness on the basepaths and not his hitting or defense this year. He's missed time in September with tendinitis, but it's been his other knee. Bay's not blaming his health at all for his down year, though he admits he's slowed down. It could be a confidence issue, it could be that he's burnt out on all the losing. It could be a good old-fashioned off-year, similar to those experienced by...

What's Wrong With Jason Bay?
2007-07-08 07:10:00 I was recently posed this question via email. Let's dig into the numbers. The most notable problem is his .251 batting average. Bay entered the season with a .292 career mark. Honestly, an average in the .250s should never have been a shock given Bay's 72.6% contact rate last year. His CR is actually better this year, up at 74.7%. Line drives are up too. However his walk rate is down to 10.1% from 15.2% last year. I can see Bay settling in as a .270-.275 type hitter instead of .290; he's never made good contact. His power is way down - his SLG sits at just .428 after slugging at least .530 in every full season of his career. As you might expect, he's got the lowest HR per flyball rate of his career right now. He's still hitting plenty of flies; they're just not leaving the yard. An important question to ask is whether this is a new level or just a rough stretch for Bay. On June 3rd Bay had a .312/.382/.540 line, and n...

Pirates Cast, Not Knee Faulted in Jason Bay Slump
2007-07-06 03:15:00 Pirates slugger Jason Bay -- having just broken an 0-14 slump with an RBI single in a 6-3 win over Milwaukee -- is experiencing no lingering effects from last January's knee surgery, and so has not blamed his health for his batting average plumeting 60 points to the .250s over the past month.More likely at fault are Bay's supporting cast members, who have been struggling much of the year, especially first baseman Adam La Roche. La Roche was brought over from the Braves expressly to protect Bay in the lineup, but until recently had struggled just to keep his batting average over .200.Having hit .455 with two home runs last week, however, and having continued to hit the ball hard since, La Roche at last will help Bay see a lot more decent pitches. In his most recent outing, La Roche hit still another homer and just missed one that went for a double.Thanks to La Roche, look for Bay to break out of the doldrums after the All-Star break.

Jason Bay Withheld From Field as a Precaution
2007-03-09 10:39:03 Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is being withheld from defensive play in early spring games after coming off knee surgery in November, but he remains a top 10 major league offensive force and should be absolutely 100 percent by opening day, if he is not already.The 2004 Rookie of the Year hit .286 with 35 homers in 687 plate appearances last year, an astonishing number considering he was suffering from painful agitation behind the kneecap caused by excessive friction and tenderness between bone and cartilege.Having diagnosed the condition as patella condromalicia, surgeons in a relatively unusual procedure entered the knee from behind to shave away the agitated material to promote regeneration with the objective of smoothing the buffer, according to knowlegeable observers familiar with Bay's condition.Bay's incision has healed, but he is gradually restoring his durability after the post-op layoff. As a precaution he is being limited to playing designated hitter in the early days of c...
