Republicans Should Fear Eli Manning and Jason Campbell
2008-08-29 14:03:00
After switching around from the Washington Redskins preseason game to the South Carolina-North Carolina State college football game, I turned to the Democratic National Convention to watch Barack Obama?s acceptance speech. Besides wanting to see his speech, the preseason game ended and I didn?t have that much interest in this particular college football game (particularly since South Carolina was winning big). However, this got me thinking about next week. The Republican National Convention will end next Thursday night with John McCain?s acceptance speech. Next Thursday night also marks the beginning of the NFL season as the Washington Redskins face the New York Giants, a game that a millions of people care about as opposed to last night's games. Although the NFL and NBC moved the game to a 7:00pm Eastern Time start so it won't conflict with the speech, I think the Republican Party should be worried about the game exceeding three hours. If it is a close game after 10:00, the...
Jason Campbell injury update
2008-05-30 22:59:00
Matt Mosley at his Hashmarks blog had an NFC sized injury update today with the good (or bad) word on Jason Campbell. As reader(s) are well aware, Campbell injured his hammy earlier this offseason. It went something like this: Next step: Zorn has Campbell working hard to bend his knees and stay low while dropping back. It's still a bit awkward for Campbell and might have led to the hamstring pull. Campbell will be the unquestioned starter, but he might not have much margin for error following Todd Collins' impressive performance last season. Interesting note on that last bit. I was impressed with the manner Collins came in and owned the offense last season though attributed much of that success to his familiarity with a system. I am not trying to take anything away from Todd, but I wonder if lightning will strike twice under a new coaching staff and playbook that he hasn't worn as a second skin for years. I also look at our earlier schedule -- especially the fact that three of ...
Jason Campbell Classic
2008-05-01 18:13:00
Jason Campbell officially a starting quarterback in the NFL now that he has his own golf classic. Redskins 360 is due credit for the story, and other excellent minutiae: Jason Campbell joined a huge list of NFL starting quarterbacks who have their own charity golf tournaments when he hosted the Jason Campbell Classic at Lowes Island Club in Fairfax County... Campbell said Cooley is the best golfer on the Redskins and Frost is a close second. Told of this Frost said that wasn't saying much. And out on the course, I got what Frost was saying. It wasn't pretty. Said Campbell beforehand: "I'm scared for a lot of people standing around these players. A club may fly out of a guy's hands, there might be 10 balls in the water. Some of these guys, it's their first time playing." More is promised in today's Times. Jason also talked briefly about the new wide receivers though his comments are largely predictable; he's happy. Groin injuries were contagious last year preventing us from...
Jason Campbell will be treated like a starter
2008-02-28 19:56:00
Per this very fascinating ESPN article (hat tip: dr WNC) that is mostly praising new head coach Jim Zorn: "I don't want Jason Campbell to feel like, 'Oh my gosh, if I make one mistake, I'm going to be pulled,''' Zorn said during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. "That's not the way to go into this. That's not the way to go into any camp and it's not the way to go into any football season.'' Which is precisely how starters should be treated. Campbell cannot go out this year operating like Patrick Ramsey, thinking that the starting position he earned will be ripped from underneath him at any moment. In any event, the threat of job loss isn't credible if we lose Todd Collins. Elsewhere: Hiring Zorn, who last worked as quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks, might give the impression that Snyder was looking for a puppet. Snyder's been accused of being a fantasy football player in the past, known for doing what he wants at the expense of his coaches and the team...
Jim Zorn on everything, including Jason Campbell
2008-02-25 00:34:00
Doug Farrar of Seahawks.NET has a fantastic article up right now on Jim Zorn on everything, including starting quarterback Jason Campbell. The piece is mostly concerned with the offensive plan and how that will fit given the personnel we have in place, with Zorn commenting on, among other things, how great it is to have a running back who also happens to be a reliable pass blocker (Clinton Portis). Warning on the following video: I didn't pick the music, which is NSFW. I found the clip a while ago and decided not to post it on account of the lyrical content, but after rewatching it I just can't refrain because the hits Clinton Portis lays on would be tacklers (of quarterbacks, receivers, whomever) are simply too good to ignore. Enjoy, but you might turn the volume down, just FYI: That's not really the part of the article I want to focus on, however. Jim Zorn has previously criticized some aspects of Jason's game and that's fine; it is precisely what a head coach/quarterbacks c...
Does Jason Campbell throw deep passes?
2008-02-13 19:28:00
Some fellow in the comments section of an FO piece by Doug Farrar (on why we should be excited about Jim Zorn) argued that Jason Campbell doesn't throw the ball deep, rather he just had good receivers who got him YACs. My response used statistics taken from CNNSI's stats page looking at QB splits and team stats. Here's what I found, though encourage all to check my numbers: The Redskins had 1570 YACs on 525 attempts or just ~ 3 YAC per Attempt. By comparison -- and I choose the Cowboys because [follows a discussion of why I chose the Cowboys, in any event, good team in the same division with a competent offense and quarterback] -- had 1761 YACs on 531 or ~3.2 YAC per Attempt. It would stand to reason that perhaps Tony Romo benefited more from YACs than did Jason Campbell. Re: Distance of JC's passes... JC completed 250 passes last year. Their distribution ON DISTANCE TRAVELED IN THE AIR (not distance gained by receivers after the catch) was: 53 completed traveling behind LOS (21...
Jason Campbell is the quarterback of the future (presently)
2008-02-11 19:10:00
A favorite Hogs Haven reader and frequent email exchanger with yours truly pointed out that although we've heard a lot on Jim Zorn from a few players and the owner and coaches and the media etc. we haven't heard much about him from Jason Campbell and, since he's our starting quarterback, it might be important to solicit quotations from Jason on his newest offensive coordinator now gone head coach. Likewise it's worth noting how the newest offensive coordinator now gone head coach feels about his starting quarterback. (He is the starting quarterback, yes?) Per Covering The Redskins, emphasis mine: Zorn said he will hire a new offensive coordinator to replace himself and he is unsure who will call plays until that person is chosen.. It is unclear if there will be a quarterback coach hired as well (his specialty). The offense will be a west coast style, but Zorn wouldn't go so far as to say that he is going to implement what has become a standard west coast formation.. His eyes l...
Jason Campbell is still the future
2008-01-04 17:40:00
There's a discussion over at Football Outsiders over Mike Tanier's Wild Card preview that aberrated in part to a brief conversation on whether or not Jason Campbell is the future of the team. My position appears here explicitly: Jason Campbell is the future of the team. That is not said to take anything away from Todd Collins or even to suggest that a healthy JC should supplant Collins in the playoffs. I think Todd has played well enough the past few weeks and believe that Campbell requires enough recovery where we'd all be better off with The Todd closing out the season. But no matter what happens, a healthy Jason in 2008 is the one we start on week 1. That's my position and I justify it thus: As impressive as Todd has been, the sample size is small enough at the moment where I'm unwilling to claim with authority that he's better than Jason. Remember that JC is still learning this offense and there's no reason to yet believe that he won't become the familiar-with-the-system...
Jason Campbell probably out for the season
2007-12-08 17:13:00
Unless JC is some kind of injury recovering wunderkind, or unless we make it to the Super Bowl with gritty veteran seasoned warrior Todd Collins, right? our backup quarterback, Campbell has likely saw field for the last time this year Thursday against Da Bears. Good cop: An MRI on Campbell's dislocated kneecap revealed that the injury probably would not require surgery, coach Joe Gibbs said yesterday... "We're taking things day-by-day and week-by-week," said Campbell, standing on crutches with a brace around his left leg. "We'll see how things improve over the next couple of weeks. The thing I have to do right now is stay off it as much as possible and let the swelling get out of it and see what happens." Bad cop: Campbell was told that he likely would be out four weeks, according to sources close to the player, and the Redskins (6-7) have just three regular season contests remaining. No surgery is great news because, and I'm no big city doctor, it increases the likelihood of a ...
Jason Campbell refuses to be baited
2007-10-25 00:22:00
Once upon a time Donovan McNabb of Eagles fame told Bryant Gumble that: African-American quarterbacks such as himself face added pressure because there are fewer black QBs -- and because some still don't want black athletes playing the position. "There's not that many African-American quarterbacks, so we have to do a little bit extra," McNabb tells HBO. "Because the percentage of us playing this position, which people didn't want us to play ... is low, so we do a little extra." Which may or may not be true. I don't think it's true. I follow football pretty closely and, if I recall correctly, Donovan McNabb was held in pretty high esteem among quarterbacks in the offseason -- actually every offseason. When he struggles, as he has on occasion, he is predictably criticized. When he succeeds, he gets credited. I think he was wrong on the substance of his claim, but I also think it's a pretty foolish thing to say, period. You aren't doing yourself any favors by playing the race ca...
Jason Campbell and the Redskins distinguished
2007-10-10 22:11:00
Per the Official Site: Redskins' quarterback Jason Campbell has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Redskins 34-3 victory over the Detroit Lions at FedExField last Sunday. It is Campbell's first honor as NFC Offensive Player of the Week. The Lions game marked only the 11th start of Campbell's career. Of course Campbell went on to say all the right things how he's just looking towards next week, though he's appreciative of being honored. Also: Redskins' defensive end Andre Carter was also nominated as NFC Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded eight tackles, two sacks, one safety and four quarterback hurries against the Lions. I'm assuming the lack of preemptive victory means he didn't win, though he had a helluva game as well. It is apparent now that Andre Carter's tear at the end of last season was just the beginning of his inevitable tear over the course of multiple seasons as a Redskin, which will cause tears in opposing qu...
Len Pasqurelli Says Redskins Jason Campbell Has Arrived - Beat Phili
2007-09-18 18:41:00
And I agree. I didn't see the game, but I've long believed that Campbell would grow into the position and be not just the Redskins leader, but one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Remember, he came out in the same draft at Alex Smith and Aaron Rogers, yet wasn't even considered as good as those two. He was drafted in the first round, but his selection was virtually ignored by many. Watch out for Campbell.
The preseason is over and Jason Campbell survived
2007-08-31 21:22:00
The biggest news of the game was arguably JC's impressive though brief performance in the 1st half, going 5 of 5 for 54 yards and his first touchdown in 2007. There was ample opportunity to test his injured knee, and it held up: There was one minor scare -- Campbell was crunched by reserve defensive lineman Walter Curry but was uninjured -- on an otherwise perfect opening drive. Campbell, who had suffered a bruised knee when he was bashed from his blind side in the second preseason game against Pittsburgh, moved well to either side. He did not twitch in the face of the pass rush despite lingering memories of Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel nearly ending his season and overcame any rust from his layoff with an accurate touch. He completed 5 of 5 pass attempts for 54 yards and a touchdown. We learned a lot about the rest of the quarterbacks as well, despite Todd Collins sitting this one out. We learned, for instance, that the Jaguars boo Mark Brunell less than we do. This space i...
Jason Campbell could not play today, Clinton Portis moves closer to the fie
2007-08-22 22:06:00
Same article, two big pieces of relevant Redskins injury news. First: Jason Campbell's availability for this Saturday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens remains uncertain. Campbell participated in the Redskins' walk-through portion of practice on Tuesday, but he returned to the team's facility for continued treatment a short time later. From the mustache himself: "If I had to play today, I probably couldn't," Campbell said. "It's hurting my movement right now, but it's only been two-and-a-half days since the injury occurred. I feel like I'm doing well to be moving at the level I am right now." I think he needs some more reps, but I'd just as soon let him play more of the fourth preseason game than rush this thing for this weekend. Essentially I'm saying his being ready for the regular season is a function of reps rather than games played. Or at least that's the position I'm taking given last Saturday's terrifying scare. With Chris Samuels still out I just don...
Ask Jason Campbell anything
2007-08-16 18:31:00
Three big nuggets of news this morning as I haven't found a Redskins related (even tangentially) bit of minutiae that I didn't feel needed to get posted in this space immediately. We'll start at Extreme Skins which, in their infinite wisdom and access, are going to hold an Ask Jason Campbell session: Extremeskins is pleased to bring you an interactive chat opportunity our future, Jason Campbell. The chat session will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 22 and presented Friday, Aug. 24. Our special forum features upcoming chats and can be found at the following location: http://www.extremeskins.com/for-ums/...isplay.php?f=33 Linked above. I think this is brilliant and really speaks towards the greatness of ES as it allows fans a lot more personal access to the players they love than would otherwise be available. More=better when it comes to contacting Jason Campbell directly. Although I doubt it will get posted, I personally asked what he felt about the insane AMI insinuation that his mus...

All eyes on Jason Campbell
2007-07-25 21:07:00
Redskins training camp begins this Friday and I'll make sure to have an Open Thread for discussion up, as I may or may not be around a computer that day. Someone at Hogs Haven is allegedly going to try and be there for us, though I have no confirmation on that as of yet. The focus will be on Jason Campbell. To give you an idea of that, I direct reader(s) to the Extreme Skins Breaking News Forum which is an incredibly valuable resource for tracking news in real time. I only have two eyes, and am indebted to the ES users there who update Breaking News 24/7, notably bubba, HapHaszard, and JimmiJo (who also writes for Skins Cast). A sampling of the hyper attention JC will get throughout training camp: Washington Examiner, Is Campbell ready to take his cue? It's all about quarterback Jason Campbell when the Washington Redskins open training camp on Friday. TSN (emphasis mine):Part of the grand hope for marked improvement in the passing game this season has been based on the increased c...
Jason Campbell inspires confidence
2007-07-16 17:47:00
Update [2007-7-16 12:56:42 by Skin Patrol]: Topical article at The Official Site, from Gary Fitzgerald, that discusses Jason Campbell as a leader, both from his teammates and from the Mustache himself. It was the last installment of an entire offseason series devoted specifically to Jason; Part One and Part Two also available. Perhaps not in the minds of impartial sports observers but certainly in my mind, and the minds of many Redskins fans. More importantly in the minds of his teammates and coaches, who have practically gushed about his work ethic and progress this offseason. But he's young, and was an inaccurate quarterback last year, so I understand why AOL Fanhouse's Michael David Smith would ask whether he inspires confidence, especially given the low ranking Fox Sports' Mike Tanier gave the Redskins quarterback situation: 28. Redskins (2006 Rank: 13) Jason Campbell fared well in seven late-season starts last year. He didn't make the highlight reel very often, but he a...
Mark Brunell vs. Jason Campbell on 3rd down
2007-07-02 22:06:00
First let me thank Greg Trippiedi at Hog Heaven for inspiring this post, as his analysis of the offensive line spawned a discussion of The Mustache vs. Mark Brunell on third down. The entire read is worthwhile for what it adds to the discussion on our O-Line last year, but I focused on this portion: Moreso, while the idea is to grade how good of a job the line does, Mark Brunell did an excellent job getting the ball out of his hands quickly last season in nine starts to keep the Redskins plodding foward. This is of course true, though worded strangely, in my opinion. From where I was sitting, Mark Brunell had a furiating tendency to check down to Ladell Betts too quickly, especially on third downs, which led to a lot of 3rd and (say) 8(ish) going for 3 yards. I found that strategy silly. He did an excellent job of getting rid of the ball, but that decision making was suspect. It's one thing to claim that, it's another thing to prove it statistically. I believe what I found support...
Jason Campbell is a role model for people and facial hair everywhere
2007-06-26 17:33:00
The long offseason, with its lack of newsworthy events, is rife with character pieces or player storylines, though they've typically covered lesser known players. Dave Fairbank surprised me with an entertaining read on starting quarterback Jason Campbell in today's Daily Press. It's a worthwhile read in full, though impressed me because it has so many character-quality related quotes from Jason Campbell. For instance, there is little question that Pacman Jones does not have his image in mind when he launches dollar bills at a stripper. What is going on in that man's mind prior to making it rain is not the effects of his actions. Jason Campbell, on the other hand: "You have to understand when you leave that practice facility and leave that field, you're a target. People are watching to see if you're going to make mistakes. "You also have little kids watching. That's the main thing. Your little cousin could be watching and seeing exactly what you're doing. So when you're arou...
Jason Campbell
2007-06-22 23:33:00
I posted about TE Chris Cooley yesterday but you can't really figure out what Cooley is going to do until you figure out how QB Jason Campbell is going to perform this season. Well, he didn't exactly breakout during his seven starts last season but it wasn't too bad.  He finished with a 53.1% completion rate, 1297 yards, 10 TDs and 6 INTs. But to be fair, this was the guy's rookie season.  He had some poor games and he had some pretty good games.  Taken all together, he performed ok.  Eh. So, how is he going to do this season?  Well if you read this gushing USA Today article, Jason Campbell is the finest human being ever to wear a football helmet.    Yeesh!   That's just an example of the hype around Jason Campbell this season.  While he may lead the Redskins into playoff contention, I don't think he's going to be much of a factor for fantasy players.  The Redskins offense is going to be centered around the new running back ...

Hey, his words, not mine. Before we begin, some credits are due: I don't know how many websites are running this, I suspect many, but it comes to me complements The Dude Abides. Littles, host of that excellently named blog (I'm a big Big Lebowski fan), is also producer of my favorite blog-related television program -- Blog Show. Which is hosted, of course, by Mr. Irrelevant himself Jamie Mottram and Dan Steinberg, who also did the entire Eastern Motors series, including this brilliant writeup of the video below. He covers everything that would be of interest to Hogs Haven reader(s), so rather then cheapen any of his writing or the video itself with my lame humor and poor writing, I'll let YouTube speak for itself: I'm sure the video will soon make the rounds through the Internets, though you can also find it and a brief post on it at AOL Fanhouse complements Michael David Smith. Jason Campbell bowls. I bowl. We're practically friends!
2007-06-15 18:36:00
Honesty and full disclosure demands I admit to not bowling that frequently, and when I do put on my bowling shoes I usually suck it up. My average is below 100. Which is strange, given my pedigree; my mother has bragged repeatedly that my grandfather once bowled a perfect 300, no easy task. Anyways, character piece on Jason Campbell in this morning's Post is gushing with praise and anectodes and is well worth the few minutes it takes to tackle the entire article. For instance, did you know that Jason Campbell was a bowler? ...Campbell and [Jason's girlfriend, Miss District of Columbia Mercedes] Lindsay accepted an invitation to a neighborhood cookout (Campbell, a bachelor who disdains leftovers, is a frequent dinner guest around his housing development). There, the 25th overall pick of the 2005 draft boasted good-naturedly about his bowling prowess with some high school students. As you might imagine, this descended quickly into an actual contest, to be settled at what should bec...
Jason Campbell is a great quarterback, but he cannot dance
2007-06-14 20:20:00
Not much more to add on this DC Sports Bog post on the Eastern Motors commercial, some highlights of which have been revealed. It has Randle-El complaining about that damned boogie-woogie, Chief Zee dancing like the business, and Jason Campbell performing youth basketball camp ball handling skill routines... or "dancing" as it appears in the video. I might be a better dancer than Jason Campbell. Don't ask my girlfriend about that. On a personal note I'd just like to thank Dan for his tireless efforts on this entire series, which has entertained me to no end, and echo the thoughts of Unsilent Majority: "God's work there Steinz." Indeed it is. The Dude Abides, BogTV #20 Deadspin, Behind The Scenes Of The Eastern Motors Magic
Jason Campbell is the starting quarterback
2007-06-08 00:51:00
David Gaines at Skinsaphrenia tracked down this ludicrous USA Today blog entry that speculates on a positional battle emerging between Jason Campbell and Mark Brunell. You read that correctly: Fine-tune your clipboard-holding skills -- Jason Campbell, Redskins -- The third-year player closed last season as the starter and should open this year the same way. He'll get every chance from coach Joe Gibbs to succeed. But Mark Brunell (granted, he coughed up his chance last year) sits behind him. And if Campbell gets off to a rough start, the Washington fans will not suffer inexperienced, ineffective QBs gladly. Focused just on what's here, Jason Campbell finished as the starter last year and will be the starter next year. Whomever the writer is speculates that a rocky start could doom him, thanks in large part to the fans. Multiple bogus premises here make it difficult to begin. I'll try: the fans do not choose the quarterback, the Coach does. We know that all too well as last year it...
Please be the real thing, Jason Campbell
2007-06-03 21:52:00
I'm going to get killed for this, but I'll post it anyways, because it's been on my mind for some time now and I can't quite shake it.  Let me preface this by saying I've been a Redskins fan all my life and, like the rest of you, I've seen Washington as nothing short of pre-season Super Bowl champions on paper since 1992 (and before that, actual champions).  This pre-season is no different, but I have some serious doubts about the person most responsible for the team's success: starting quarterback Jason "the 'stache" Campbell.  I'm hoping that you guys can tell me in the comments why I'm dead wrong about this.  At the very least, this post will serve to partially balance predictions entertained on the site that Campbell is bound for the Pro Bowl (which is ironic, since Super Bowl champions always/often skip the Pro Bowl). Jason Campbell did not play well at all last season. His 76.5 Quarterback Rating was below the league average, and a full 10 points ...
Jason Campbell needs your help
2007-05-29 18:37:00
Update [2007-5-29 12:17:5 by Skin Patrol]: You can find massive man-love for Jason Campbell everywhere on the tubenets. At USA Today and The Fanhouse, for instance. Hat tip: Behind the Steel Curtain. In another instance of us trying to win something without actually winning anything, I encourage reader(s) to zip on over to NFL.com pronto and vote on this strangely specific (and obviously intern-concocted) poll: Which of these third-year players is most ready to break out in 2007? As of this moment, the results (~180K votes in) are as follows:   37% Alex Smith 22% Cedric Benson 15% Ronnie Brown 11% Jason Campbell 6% Matt Jones 5% Mark Clayton 4% Troy Williamson And that is total bullshit. Jason Campbell returns to the same offense for the first time since High School, and that offense happens to belong to Al Saunders, who has a resume that speaks for itself. That he's below Ronnie Brown and Cedric Benson baffles me to the point where discussion on his placem...
Jason Campbell wins his first Pro Bowl... in May
2007-05-17 17:19:00
Blog Shogan Steinberg misses nothing, especially insaneish premature Pro Bowl nods to Redskins players in practice. Per The Bog: Adam Schefter doesn't waste any time in suggesting that Jason Cambpell has looked Pro Bowl good in OTA's. Seriously, there's nothing better than being a Skins fan in May. I'll get on board this Pro Bowl train, why not? Fine, we're on board as well -- despite viewing such early acclaim portentiously -- but what exactly did Shefter report? After two years in the league as an understudy, and four hours each day this winter and spring in Washington's training facility simply studying, Campbell is said to look like a different quarterback, Redskins officials said this week. One observer even predicted, boldly, that Campbell would go to the Pro Bowl this season. Of course it's a long way from Washington in May to Hawaii in February, but Campbell has demonstrated improved technique, understanding and confidence. And after a week of OTA's, he has been t...
Jason Campbell's mustache doesn't have to prove anything to YOU
2007-05-11 17:56:00
Winning is important but not necessarily moreso than great facial hair. Despite not having done much of the former, Jason Campbell is accumulating the kind of effusive, gushing praise that gets me all riled up despite not being all riled up because Football Season is many moons away. Per the Times per The Steinberg (a media institution unto himself): Al Saunders joked that Washington's first-year starting quarterback has become almost like his son. "Every time I look over my shoulder, Jason's here," said Saunders, who worked with Campbell three hours a day, three days a week leading up to the players' first days back on the field this week. "He's making progress. He's a wonderful kid to work with. He's extremely bright and has worked extremely hard on his techniques and fundamentals [with] a lot of film work, a lot of board work and a lot of understanding of what we are doing from a schematic standpoint." ...Campbell's teammates noted, the quarterback looked sharper and more ...
Jason Campbell fears no one
2007-04-11 22:08:00
Not even JeMarcus Russell, who has already earned panegyric as the greatest QB in the history of history despite never having played a single down of NFL football. Per Maske: Campbell stopped by Redskins Park late this morning and said he wasn't offended by the team scheduling Russell's visit. "It's a process everyone has to go through," Campbell said. "I had to go through it when I was coming out.... It doesn't mean anything by it." Wiser words were never spoken. It means (we believe in) nothing (Lebowski!). Such rumoring of Russell to Redskins should be summarily dismissed as poppycock, horsefeathers, piffle, flim flam, balderdash, claptrap, baloney, balogna, twaddle, bananas, hooey, bull, redonkeylegs, etc. Becaaaaause... Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs has said the club is committed to Campbell as its starter. Campbell said he was told about Russell's visit in advance by assistant coach Al Saunders. And even if Joe Gibbs isn't telling the tooth, JC fears not some young buck chal...
