Packers suddenly thin at defensive end
2007-08-20 15:52:00
Green Bay Packers defensive end Michael Montgomery was one of four players to have MCL injuries Saturday night in the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. His injury leaves the Packers in a little more precarious position at defensive end than the team might prefer."Depending on the severity of the strain or tear, MCL injuries generally take two to six weeks to heal ? six weeks if the ligament is completely torn," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Montgomery's injury appeared among the worst of the four, and he had his arms around the shoulders of two people as he limped to the tunnel that leads to the locker rooms at halftime. He also sustained a torn posterior-cruciate ligament and sprained MCL in his right knee in practice on Dec. 6 last year that ended his 2006 season, though it's unclear whether he injured the same knee Saturday night."On the assumption that Montgomery would be out an extended period of time, that leaves the Packers without any b...
Thumbs up photo of the day (8/14/2007)

Today's thumbs up goes out to Larry Birdine, a backup defensive end looking to nab a backup job with the Green Bay Packers. "Defensive end Larry Birdine, a free-agent rookie from Oklahoma, is getting better," reports Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He applied constant pressure playing the last 2½ quarters in Pittsburgh and gave great effort Monday in the one-on-one drills. Birdine isn't an easy mark for anyone these days." Birdine led the Packers in tackles with six during Saturday's preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Packers are thin at end behind Cullen Jenkins, Aaron Kampman and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. It could be a place where a player could steal a spot. Of course, Birdine would have to show more potential than Michael Montgomery and Jason Hunter.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Presenting: the first roster reduction

There was some biting criticism among the Wisconsin daily newspapers today regarding two Green Bay Packers. Each newspaper gives a thumbs up/thumbs down daily during training camp. And today's players didn't just get a thumbs down, they got a they thumbs way, way down.According to Rob Demovsky of the Press-Gazette, "Every so often, there's a player in training camp who looks like he has no business wearing an NFL uniform. The Packers have one this year: rookie offensive lineman Pat Murray."The 6-foot-3, 310-pounder from Truman State looks out of place. By unofficial Press-Gazette statistics, Murray has participated in 12 snaps during one-on-one pass-blocking/ pass-rushing drills and cleanly has won only two reps ? one against second-year defensive end Jason Hunter and the other against rookie free agent Devon Hicks. Playing guard and tackle, Murray has gotten beat ? sometimes embarrassingly easily ? by mostly second- and third-string defensive linemen."The Milwaukee Journal Senti...
Meet Larry Birdine
2007-07-04 16:13:00
Oklahoma defensive end Larry Birdine was one of the most highly touted undrafted free agents the Green Bay Packers signed in 2007. After earning first team All-Big 12 honors last season, Birdine went undrafted. In a recent article for Packer Report, Todd Korth says Birdine could become an eventual starter in in the Packers defensive system ala Cullen Jenkins.According to Korth, "The Packers often inserted Birdine at the strong-side position during the team?s off-season mini-camps and Organized Team Activities practices. Aaron Kampman is the starter at the strong-side position and is backed up by Michael Montgomery, who finished last season on the team?s injured reserve list with hamstring and knee injuries."Montgomery and 2006 undrafted rookie Jason Hunter will be Birdine's main competition for a roster spot in the 2007 edition of the Packers. It is assumed that Jenkins, Kampman, and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila are locks to make the Packers' roster. Although, Gbaja-Biamila seems to be the...
