Rangers right-hander Jason Jennings thrilled to be back in hometown (AP)
2008-02-23 02:31:00 Jason Jennings’ enthusiasm for coming home cut through a rainy day at Texas Rangers camp Friday. “This is the team I grew up watching in the old days,” Jennings said. “Nolan Ryan, Charlie Hough, Pete O’Brien — the names go on and on. To have a chance to put on that uniform, it’s an honor.” ...

2008-01-18 03:21:00 Jason Jennings agreed to a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers. The contract is worth $4 million “We really wanted somebody that had a history of eating up innings and winning games in what is otherwise considered a hitter’s park,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. “And somebody that is a young veteran with his best ...

Rangers Sign Jason Jennings
2008-01-16 23:41:00 UPDATE, 1-16-08 at 10:39pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Rangers have reached an agreement with Jennings for one year and $4MM. I like the price, and I wonder if this was one of those hometown discount situations. FROM 1-11-08 at 12:09am: According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers "appear to be closing in on" a deal with Jason Jennings. Grant says the last hurdle before a deal is struck with the 29 year-old might be a physical. Terms are not yet known. The Dallas native earned $5.5MM in 2007. Jennings had surgery in late August to repair a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. He expects to be throwing by March 1st.

Rangers Rumors: Guardado, Cameron, Hamilton
2007-12-21 22:16:00 MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has all the latest hot stove buzz around the Rangers. The Rangers are nearing a deal with Eddie Guardado. Everyday Eddie might be a dark horse to close, if he can flash his late season form again. The Reds decided in October that he was not worth $3.5MM, and declined his option. Guardado is 37. The Rangers hope to add some kind of veteran starter. Bartolo Colon and Jason Jennings are still options, but Mark Prior and Freddy Garcia pretty much are not. Sullivan names Mike Maroth, Mark Hendrickson, and Josh Towers as pitchers of interest. Mike Cameron could be an option for center field if he'll take a one-year deal. A multiyear demand would also take the Rangers out of the running for Corey Patterson. Sullivan notes that the Reds want Edinson Volzquez for Josh Hamilton, a possibility he first mentioned three weeks ago. Jamey Newberg doesn't think Volquez would cut it. Other trade options could include Andre Et...

Nats, Mets, Yanks Interested In Prior
2007-12-15 19:47:00 UPDATE, 12-15-07 at 12:47pm: The Phillies are one team that does not have interest in Prior. UPDATE, 12-15-07 at 8:48am: Ed Price adds that the Yankees and Mets have both shown preliminary interest in Prior. Apparently he is throwing on flat ground and could be ready by May. Translation: he may return by the second half. Price believes roughly a dozen clubs are interested in Prior. FROM 12-14-07 at 11:53pm: The Nationals are looking in the bargain bin for a veteran starting pitcher. Two options they're considering are Mark Prior and Jason Jennings, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson. The Nats first touched base with Jennings' agent around November 6th. Prior is a new name for them though. Jennings has the Royals, Rangers, Rockies, and Mets on his trail as well. As for Prior, the Astros, Reds, Rangers, Phillies, and Padres may be the most interested clubs. showad();

Odds and Ends: Colon, Clark, Gagne
2007-12-02 16:44:00 Random rumors, let's round 'em up. How about Bartolo Colon to the Mets? David Lennon notes that Omar Minaya sold the farm to acquire him in 2002 as the Expos' GM. Scott Lauber says Aaron Rowand is insisting on a five-year deal. He adds that the Phils have interest in Geoff Jenkins but he might be too expensive. Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller are considered untouchable, so don't look for the Tigers to make any big trades. Patrick Saunders runs down some free agents the Rockies may consider for the back end of their rotation: Tony Armas, Matt Clement, Steve Trachsel, Josh Fogg, Jason Jennings, Jon Lieber, Mark Redman, Brett Tomko, and Kip Wells. The Rays may go after Tony Clark, in large part because they're seeking leadership. Marc Topkin agrees, and also rattles off Geoff Jenkins, Brad Wilkerson, Cliff Floyd, Mike Lamb, Mark Sweeney, Corey Koskie, and Greg Nortion as other possibilities. It's expected that Eric Gagne will not accept Boston's offer o...

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Barrett, Fukumori
2007-11-08 22:59:00 What are the Rockies up to as they plot to defend their NL pennant? Tracy Ringolsby and Troy E. Renck have the latest. Ringolsby says Garrett Atkins is staying put, which should help the third baseman relax a little bit. This echoes Renck's sentiments yesterday. Renck also noted that the Rox won't be offering Atkins a multiyear deal anytime soon. Yesterday Renck said that after Yorvit Torrealba, the Rockies were considering Jose Molina, Paul Lo Duca, Jason Kendall, and Ramon Castro for catcher. However Ringolsby says today that Michael Barrett and Kendall are the main targets. Renck has come on board with that today, noting that Dan O'Dowd has contacted the agents for Barrett, Kendall, and Lo Duca. Ringolsby adds that the Rockies are exploring the Japanese reliever market, namely Hitoki Iwase and Kazuo Fukumori. Fukumori might appeal as the cheaper of the two. Meanwhile the Indians, Brewers, Phillies, and Mets like Brian Fuentes. We've a...

Nats Like Andruw, Livan, Jennings, Colon, Glavine
2007-11-07 03:24:00 UPDATE, EVENING OF 11-6-07: MLB.com's Bill Ladson has some more good Nationals information. His source says that both Livan Hernandez and Tom Glavine are interested in the club, but they only have the budget for one of them. Glavine makes more sense. Ladson also mentions that Bowden has his eye on Rocco Baldelli, and idea I like. I can't really think of a great match for a trade though. FROM MORNING OF 11-6-07: According to the Washington Post, Nationals president Stan Kasten recently met with Andruw Jones at the center fielder's home in Atlanta. Kasten, of course, was formerly president of the Braves. Kasten's contact with Jones is described as "extremely preliminary." That makes sense, since technically the two parties are not allowed to talk dollars and cents. But come on - it's not like Andruw's house is bugged by MLB. The Nationals' open-minded pledge has already led them to contact Torii Hunte...

Olney: Mets Asked About Jason Jennings
2007-11-04 04:14:00 According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Mets asked about Jason Jennings. The Mets were known to have tried to trade for Jennings last winter. Now they can get him at a reasonable price without surrendering players. So far in the young offseason, we've only seen the Rockies linked to Jennings. If he can prove he's healthy after having a torn flexor tendon repaired, many teams are going to view him as a potential bargain. You have to respect the fact that Jennings battled tendon soreness and inflammation since the middle of the 2006 season before succumbing to surgery (per Baseball Injury Report). showad();

Rockies Have Jennings On The Radar
2007-11-02 15:14:00 Jason Jennings had a nice Rockies career. He won the NL ROY in 2002 and posted a fine 3.78 ERA in 212 innings as their ace in 2006. 2007 was his last year before free agency, but he couldn't come to an agreement on an extension with Dan O'Dowd. Naturally, the Rockies shopped him in the winter of 2006-07. Interest was extensive, with the Mets, D'Backs, Astros, Phillies, Cardinals, Cubs, and Twins getting involved. Ultimately the Rockies scored big by getting Willy Taveras, Jason Hirsh, and Taylor Buchholz for one year of Jennings. The aggressive move didn't work out for the Astros, as Jennings was never healthy in 2007. He did battle, however (Troy E. Renck called Jennings the toughest player he ever covered). Jennings finally got the surgery he needed, having a torn flexor tendon repaired. He expects to be ready for Spring Training, and will explore his options as a free agent. The '07 injury was not entirely out of nowhere ...

Odds and Ends
2007-08-21 22:12:00 Some random rumors and links for Tuesday afternoon... The Rockies signed Mark Redman to a minor league contract. It makes sense to add some depth, but I like the team's plan of using high-octane arms Ubaldo Jimenez and Franklin Morales instead of the safe veteran options. Rick Sutcliffe's thoughts on showboating. At one time, it seemed that Jason Jennings would be primed for a big payday this winter. He still could get a Marquis contract despite his 6.45 ERA in 18 starts. But prospective buyers have to be concerned that he replied "I don't know" when asked if he is healthy. By the way, that link details a failed ballpark marriage proposal that resulted in popcorn being dumped on the guy's head. On the Jumbotron. It wouldn't be the Kansas City Star without an enormous pixellated close-up of the player in question. This time it's Mark Grudzielanek, who's been extended through 2008. Grudz wouldn't have reached the 500 PAs ...

Mariners Considering Kei Igawa, Al Reyes, Jason Jennings?
2007-07-28 17:08:00 Apparently the Mariners have some interest in twice-demoted Yankees starter Kei Igawa, according to an uncited TV report. The report pleased Ichiro Suzuki and Kenji Johjima. Igawa is locked up through 2011, which may or may not be a positive. He earns another $1.5MM this year plus $4MM annually through the end of the contract. The posting fee situation ensures that Igawa's salary is really cheap, the price a team might pay for a semi-utility guy like Mark DeRosa. If Igawa can be league average in the comfy confines of Safeco, he's a bargain. More likely he'd have value to an NL team. The Mariners were in on Igawa this offseason, along with the Padres, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Braves, Mets, Cubs, Tigers, and Indians. Igawa was said to prefer playing on the West Coast. The 28 year-old had a decent strikeout rate but has otherwise been rocked in 62 innings as a Yankee. Meanwhile Dan Graziano says the Mariners are entertaining prac...

Best Option For Astros: Keep Jennings
2007-07-19 23:36:00 I once thought Jason Jennings would be the best available starter at the trading deadline. However, he was terrible last night. He's really racking up the losses, even if some were undeserved. With health and performance a major concern, I was wondering whether it would make more sense for the Astros to hang onto him this year, and take some draft picks if he leaves via free agency after the season. So I asked ESPN's Keith Law whether Jennings would earn the Type A designation. His reply: "Almost certainly yes. It would mean the signing team's first-round pick (subject to the various rules on that) PLUS a sandwich pick." Not too shabby, and I sincerely doubt the Astros would snag something better via trade this month. So who's the best available starter? Assuming the Erik Bedard whispers weren't serious, I'd have to go with Bronson Arroyo. Javier Vazquez doesn't really seem available, and Matt Morris and Jose Contreras just...

Jason Jennings And The Padres?
2007-07-17 06:37:00 Here's a connection to consider: Jason Jennings and the Padres. The article is a few weeks old, but Kirk Bohls wrote that insiders say Jennings is hoping to be in San Diego next season. Jennings seems like a tried and true Texas guy, but maybe he has a thing for the West Coast. One could see the Padres snagging him this winter on one of those make-good, California discount type deals. Kind of like the one Randy Wolf received from the Dodgers. He'd also be a nice fit for the Padres right now, as they are said to be considering adding a starter. It's tough to gauge Tim Purpura's asking price for Jennings, as there haven't really been any trade rumors. It might be advantageous for the Astros to hold onto him and just collect some draft picks after the season.

Jason Jennings Negotiations Tabled
2007-04-27 20:39:00 According to Astros GM Tim Purpura, the team has curbed contract extension talks with impending free agent starter Jason Jennings. A major factor preventing further talks is that Jennings is currently on the DL with elbow tendinitis. The MRI showed a lack of ligament damage, but the Astros are going to want a test drive before throwing down $40MM+. Jennings began 2002 as the Rockies' fifth starter, but ultimately won the ROY with a 16 win season. He managed to keep his arm healthy for the next four seasons while working in a pitchers' hell. The Red Sox wanted to acquire him in May of '04, and the Padres inquired a few months later. The Rockies decided to hang on to him, locking him up for $7MM over 2005-06. A broken finger cut Jennings's '05 season short; that was a rough year as Joe Kennedy beat him out for the Opening Day gig. He hadn't really endured any arm injuries until now, though. The Astros knew what they were getting ...
