Jason Spezza signing boosts Cup hopes
2007-11-03 01:03:00 Eugene Melnyk just took a big step toward a Stanley Cup.Earlier today, the Ottawa Senators' owner signed Jason Spezza to a seven-year, $49 million deal that keeps him in the Canadian capital through the 2014-15 season. While some decry the notion that big contracts are undermining the salary cap, Spezza's extension makes sense. In my opinion, Spezza is worthy of such a contract even in the post-cap NHL, where budgets are supposed to be significantly smaller. His positives are too numerous to ignore.Spezza is just 24 years old and coming off back-to-back stellar seasons. He has helped lead his team to a 10-1-0 start by scoring a goal and adding 12 assists. This deal takes him through what should be the prime of his career, not from his prime to declining years.Ottawa has now locked up its three most productive forwards for at least the next four seasons. Daniel Alfredsson is in the fold through 2011-12 and Dany Heatley is signed through 2013-14. Not too many teams can boast of having th...

Ottawa Senators sign Jason Spezza
2007-11-02 21:38:00 THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators have locked up the final member of their explosive first line, agreeing to a US$49-million, seven-year contract extension with star centre Jason Spezza. The 24-year-old would have been a restricted free agent after this season but instead is committed to the team through 2014-15 season. He joins Daniel Alfredsson, who's signed through 2011-12, and Dany Heatley, who agreed to a $45-million, six-year extension through 2013-14 last month, as franchise cornerstones."This is a good situation for Jason," his agent Rick Curran said Friday. "This is where he wants to be and that's always the best deal for a player."Spezza has a goal and 12 assists in 10 games so far this season, helping Ottawa to a 10-1-0 start. He sat out Thursday night's 6-4 win over the Atlanta Thrashers with a groin injury and is listed as day-to-day.Spezza is earning $5 million this season, the last on his contract.
