A young boy waited patiently near the visiting team’s bus outside the Phillies’ ballpark, hoping to get his baseball autographed by a certain player on the Cincinnati Reds. Surely, the kid was looking for Junior. It’s not often a soon-to-be member of the 600-home run club comes through town. Ken Griffey Jr. Read the full story. ...

Rookie Sensation Jay Bruce Keeps the Hits Coming

Rookie outfielder Jay Bruce continues to impress. On Sunday, he belted his second career homerun and drove in two runs, while lifting his average to .591 after 6 games. Bruce hits second in a solid lineup with half of his games played at the hitter-friendly confines of Great American Park. The sweet-hitting southpaw was expected to sign with Tulane University, before opting to join the Majors after...
Jay Bruce still agog from memorable debut (AP)
2008-05-29 02:07:00
Crusted shaving cream clung to the side of the red baseball cap hanging from the side of Jay Bruce’s locker, a reminder of one of the best debuts in Cincinnati Reds history. The 21-year-old center fielder isn’t going to get rid of the cap — or the grin — anytime soon. “Pretty much the only ...
Baseball Notebook: Jay Bruce Shines in Major League Debut
2008-05-28 20:08:00
Jay Bruce has been red hot in the minor leagues lately and he was still hot as a firecracker in his major league debut. He had a double, two singles and two walks and a stolen base and drove in two runs. His plate discipline was impressive for a 21 year old. It was evident in 2007 that Bruce was

Jay Bruce Shines In Major League Debut
2008-05-28 08:07:00
It was a heck of a debut for Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce. At the moment, Major League pitchers have yet to prove that they can get him out. He reached base in all 5 plate appearances, including 3 hits, including a double. Bruce even stole a base during his debut, while scoring 2 runs and driving in an additional 2. Best of all, the Reds batted Bruce second in their lineup, which bodes...

The top prospect in all of baseball is finally getting the call, and this won’t be a short cup of coffee for Jay Bruce. CIN Reds? Top Prospect Jay Bruce to Debut Today

Sports Illustrated is reporting that Cincinnati Reds top prospect Jay Bruce will be making his debut today against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Jay Bruce Era Begins Tuesday
2008-05-27 08:31:00
Go ahead and pick him up. Cincinnati uber-prospect Jay Bruce will be called up to the Major League on Tuesday. It will likely end the Reds tenure for Corey Patterson, but that is the least of the concerns for fantasy managers. In a hitter's ballpark, Bruce is expected to live up the potential never reached by former Reds prospects including Austin Kearns and Adam Dunn. While it is rare for a rookie...

Trendspotting: Clayton Kershaw, Jay Bruce
2008-05-27 01:14:00
It's Monday night as I write this, and I know that I have no hope at getting Clayton Kershaw with my number four waiver in my Experts League. I was happy enough to get Bartolo Colon, only because no one wanted to use their waiver on him, even if it meant a blind faith in eleven other players passing on the Dodgers phenom. But now that an imminent add hangs in the balance, another contender for that number one waiver priority comes to light--Jay Bruce. Between the two, who should you add? Clayton Kershaw: The easy answer to this question should be "whichever position you need more". However, with the upside of both candidates, its simply not that easy. Kershaw, he of a front page article on Yahoo! (the actual page, completely unrelated to sports), could in theory be Phil Hughes or Tim Lincecum. As I mentioned after his debut, his issue has been yielding walks, but he's gotten away with it by giving up exactly zero homeruns while in the minors (2.28 ERA, 1.08 WHIP). His K/9 was 9.76...

Jay Bruce To Debut Tomorrow
2008-05-26 18:33:00
According to Baseball Digest Daily, the Reds will promote top prospect Jay Bruce tomorrow.  The 21 year-old is mashing to the tune of .364/.393/.630 in Triple A.  Said Rob Neyer today: "Has there ever been a more obvious call-up in the history of the sport?" Bruce's promotion may signal the end of Corey Patterson in Cincinnati.
Jay Bruce To Be Called Up "Soon"
2008-05-13 11:28:00
"Hal McCoy, of the Dayton Daily News, reports Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said OF Jay Bruce will be recalled soon." I skimmed the Dayton Daily News site, but couldn't find the article.  Regardless, it seems like its time to add the #1 prospect in baseball.  Brandon Funston reported that he was only 6% owned, so he's likely to be out there in some leagues, though he was stashed in all of mine. What is there not to like about Bruce?  Baseball America states that he strikes out a lot, but that they're a fair trade off for what he does when he actually hits the ball with the bat.  He can play CF, though he's more fit for RF.  Neither of these "flaws" should affect too many fantasy leagues.  Looking at his past performance, the only "bad" season he had was way back in 2005 in Rookie Ball, when an 18 year old Bruce hit .266/.341/.484 in 192 AB.  Other than that, I really can't find any red flags in his past performance. What should we expect...

Baseball Notebook: Reds Send Jay Bruce to Minors

Corey Patterson, Jay Bruce And The Reds CF
2008-03-04 18:35:00
The Reds came to terms on minor league deals with CF Corey Patterson and utilityman Jerry Hairston, Jr.  While neither player has to be kept when the team goes North at the end of the month, their signings certainly bodes in their favor. This is especially true of Corey Patterson given new manager Dusty Baker's stated desire for a "true" lead-off man and CF.  Unfortunately, for fantasy players and prospecting gurus, this likely ends top prospect, and ROY contender, Jay Bruce's chance to open the season in CF. There will be a lot of teeth-gnashing over this decison because Patterson hasn't seen a pitch he didn't think he could jack out of the park, but Patterson is a good defensive player.  That should make the Reds a better real life team than the one that broke the rookie in at a key defensive position in a season that the Reds believe could result in a play-off run.  The question is whether defense is better than OBP.  I believe that argument has been ...

Could Jay Bruce Be Headed Back To The Minor Leagues?
2008-02-19 15:36:00
New Cincinnati Reds manager, Dusty Baker has his hands full with his team’s center field situation. The Reds have three players competing for the CF job, and top prospect, Jay Bruce may not like the results. The problem is that the Reds also need a leadoff man. Baker would like whoever wins the CF job to ...
Reds Still Searching For A Starter
2007-12-17 05:20:00
John Fay writes of the Reds' continued search for a starting pitcher.  That's Wayne Krivsky's focus; his main limitation is that Jay Bruce is untouchable. The Reds couldn't get Dan Haren because they wouldn't give up young starter Johnny Cueto.  The focus remains on Erik Bedard; the Reds seem willing to offer Homer Bailey as a starting point.  Fay indicates that the Dodgers lead for Bedard, which is odd given their current six-deep rotation. I have a feeling the hot stove is going to turn to Joe Blanton now.  The Reds may be in the thick of it, especially if they'd give up Bailey for him.  What do you think, would that be a wise move? showad();
Odds and Ends: Cliff Lee, Edwin Jackson
2007-12-04 17:52:00
You know the drill... Nick Piecoro checks in on his blog.  Apparently the D'Backs discussed swapping Carlos Quentin for Cliff Lee before sending him to Chicago.  As much as he might've liked to it seems like Josh Byrnes couldn't get a starter for Quentin. Geoff Baker links the Mariners to Lee,  Ben Sheets, Mark Prior, and Edwin Jackson based on yesterday's buzz.  The Sheets one has since been questioned, since the Dodgers were identified as the West Coast team that inquired.  Prior could be part of a Raul Ibanez trade, but the Cubs are first focusing on Fukudome.  As for Jackson, the Rays would want more than just Ben Broussard. John Fay believes the Reds will have to part with Jay Bruce or Homer Bailey to get a frontline starter. showad();

Jay Bruce, Travis Snider, Daric Barton, Brett Gardner, Brian Bixler Update Brian Bixler Pirates SS/2nd baseman Brian Bixler is continuing to put up solid numbers in AAA Indianapolis. Brian has a line of .287/.387/.426. The relatively decent slugging percentage is made up mostly of doubles (19) & triples (9), more so than HR (5). Bixler has also improved upon his stolen base ratio, as he is 23/27 in SBA. Currently there is no place within the Pirates line-up for Bixler to start (Sanchez & Wilson) but I would think he’d be a better utility option than Jose Castillo. The flexibility of Sanchez defensively may give Bixler an opening in 2008. I’d expect a September call-up at the least for this prospect. Daric Barton Daric has yet to hit his 22nd birth date (born Aug 16th, 1985), yet he still may force the A’s hand and work his way onto MLB roster before the season is out. A converted catcher, Barton has a line of .309/.401/.459. Just as Bixler, the majorit...
Jay Bruce : 2007 Major Leaguer?
2007-07-26 21:05:00
Jay Bruce : 2007 Major Leaguer?     The 12th overall pick of the June 2005 draft out of West Brook high school, Jay Bruce has torn through the minors this season and has a legitimate chance at playing in the Reds outfield before the season is out. After just 67 games in High A this season, Bruce was aggressively promoted to AA Charlotte of the Southern League by the Reds organization. It was reasonable to expect Bruce to spend the rest of the season in AA and make a jump to AAA for the start of the 2008 season. Jay however, had other plans. In only 16 games, Bruce smacked out 12 extra base hits, 15 RBI and a .405 average. This prompted the Reds to send Bruce up yet again, allowing him to accomplish the somewhat rare feat of playing in three highest minor league levels in the same season. In 13 games in AAA Louisville, Bruce has a .644 slugging percentage, and 7 extra base hits. For the year he?s hitting a combined .319/.379/.604 between all three levels, with 35 doubles, 8 triples ...
