The World of Jay Payton; The Rundown...
2008-02-17 02:33:00 Jay Payton isn't sure how long he'll be in Baltimore.Honestly, I don't know if he came into the situation fully aware of Baltimore's struggles or if he signed hoping he'd have somewhere to play everyday, but I figured that he was not happy in an O's uniform. Whether or not, he stays, I think he's better off going into a scenario more suited for him -- on a winning team where he plays semi-regularly."I could be here all year, I could be here half the year, I could be here another five days," he said Saturday upon his early arrival at spring training camp.Payton has one season left on the two-year, $9 million contract he signed before the 2007 season. But is there a spot on the roster for a 35-year-old who batted .256 last year?He also adds:"I know I'm probably not the quote-unquote favorite, but this is the fourth year I've gone into spring training as the fourth outfielder and I've gotten 400 at-bats every year," Payton said. "So I'm not going to worry about my status too...

Murton Late Scratch; Payton Talks Itensify
2007-07-29 03:26:00 UPDATE: While perhaps shopping Murton, the Cubs have had significant talks regarding Baltimore's Jay Payton. The Cubs would send over two mid-level prospects; does Murton fit that criteria? Payton will make $5MM next year to finish his contract. UPDATE 2: RotoWorld says Murton was scratched tonight to allow Cliff Floyd to play and then get Sunday off. Matt Murton was a late scratch for tonight's Cubs-Reds game. Does it mean anything? We should know soon enough. This time of year, every scratch or unexpected mid-game substitution is magnified. The Cubs have been talking to the Rangers about lefty reliever Ron Mahay and catcher Gerald Laird, so maybe there's a connection. The Rangers could definitely find room for Murton in their outfield. Take it with a grain of salt, but a Cubs source of mine confirms Felix Pie's availability (huh?) and says the Cubs made an inquiry on Torii Hunter. While intriguing, I wouldn't expect either player to be traded.

Jay Payton - #16 - Left Field - 5?10? - 185lbs
2007-05-06 06:20:00 News: Jay Payton went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base as the Orioles’ No. 2 hitter on Saturday.Impact: Payton makes enough sense as a No. 2 hitter against left-handers, as long as it’s something that doesn’t happen versus righties at all. Payton hasn’t finished with a .330 OBP since 2003, his final ...
